Give IIS Permision To Run SQL Server 2005 Express Database Under Local Host.

Mar 22, 2007

I have an ASP.NET application that runs under the development server. Before deploying to my host I wanted to test it under IIS. I set up a virtual directory under IIS, but when I try to open the home page I get an error
Unable to open the physical file
"E:CDiskLocalWebSitesDIWSchedulingApp_DataDIWDB.MDF". Operating
system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".
and a code dump showing that the code is breaking at the open connection. A little research on the error indicates that IIS does not have permission to execute the database operation. I can not find any information on how to give IIS this permission in SQL Server 2005 Express. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Local SQL Server 2005 Express And Host With SQL Server 2000

Nov 8, 2005

I'm creating an app and have SQL Server 2005 Express installed. Most of the hosts now offering SQL Server 2005 are a bit pricey compared to those only offering 2000. Will I have any difficulty uploading my site and running the db on SQL 2000? Thanks in advance.

Problem Connecting To Sql Server 2005 Express Database On Local Computer

Mar 18, 2008

I have a very basic console application whose sole purpose is to query a database on the same local computer. When i run the application, i get the error message below:
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'someDomainSomeUserName'.
Below is my connection string also
myconnection_string = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Reporting SystemApp_Datasafetydata.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True").
After some googling, some post pointed to deleting a user folder at :
C:Documents and SettingsmyusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS
but still deleting that folder and restarting the machine doesn't help and i also have remote connections enabled. Help is really needed.
NOTE: The same application runs on a different computer with XP but fails on the Pc with windows server 2003.

Do Any ISP's Really Host SQL 2005 Express

Jul 30, 2006

Hi, I've been a SQL Server dba for about 10 years, so i know SQL quite well. I've recently started using VWD express, and as it says, its quick and easy to create a website, which I've done. It all works great on my local machine. I've just signed up with an isp and duly ftp'd the project files plus the mdf and ldf that lives in App_Data into their content area, and rather naively I expected it all to work. The pages come up fine until some database access is called for, then i get the seemingly infamous error:

... (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) ...

I've researched this for 2 solid days now, examined forums and posts, followed advice and enabled protocols and so on. Support at the isp in question does not really have a clue about databases and connections strings. Then I started looking closely at the words used by the isp's, none of the isp's explicitly say they support sql 2005 express. They do say SQL 2005, but not express. They do say VWD Express, but not SQL 2005 Express. So does anyone know what is/is not possible with regard to deployment of SQL 2005 express. Does anyone have experience of running SQL express on a production server, or a shared hosters machine? Its been out now for nearly a year I think, so hopefully someone has the answer.

Thanks if you can help! Charlie

I have created a database in their server, now how do I move my created SQL Express Database to their regular SQL Server? Is there a way to run a tool against my local DB and create a script to run in my hoster? What is the best practise here?

Only Local Access To SQL Server 2005 Express Ed. ?

Aug 2, 2007

Hello!
I run an application with a SQL Server 2005 Express edition.

I read under

Start menu
--> all programs
--> Microsoft SQL Server Express
--> Configuration Tools
--> SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration
--> Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections
--> Database Engine
--> Remote Connections

That:
"By default, SQL SERver 2005 Express, Evaluation and Developer editions allow local client connetctions only. Enterprise, Standard and Workgroup editions also listens for remote client connections over TCP/IP. Use the options below to change the protocols on which SQL Server listens for incoming client connections. TCP/UP is preferred over named pipes because it requeres fewer ports to be opened across the firewall."

Here I chose the option "Local and remote connections only, using TCP/IP only".

But still, does this mean that other users can't connect to my database since I'm running the Express edition?

If that's the case, could this be changed by using mySQL instead?

Is it hard to transfer a MS SQL Server .mdf database file into a new mySQL database?

Detach Database File From Local SQL Server Express Instance By C#?

Jan 30, 2008

I am using the following C# code to establish a SQL connect to a SQL database file:

// connection string
// attach a SQL database file to a local SQL server express instance
string _connectionString = @"Server=.SQLExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf; Trusted_Connection=Yes; User Instance=True";

// using System.Data.SqlClient;
SqlConnection _sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(_connectionString);
// open the connection
_sqlConnection.Open();

// do something

// close the connection
_sqlConnection.Close();

So far, the connection works fine.

However, next, I want to copy the database file to another folder. So the following codes:
// source database file name
string sourceDatabaseFileName = @"C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf";
// target database file name
string targetDatabaseFileName = @"D:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf";
// copy database file
System.IO.File.Copy(sourceDatabaseFileName, targetDatabaseFileName, true);

Then the program came with runtime exception: "IOException was unhandled: The process cannot access the file 'C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf' because it is being used by another process."

Is it because the database file was sill attached to the local SQL Server express instance? What can I do to bypass this problem? Detach the database file? or dispose the local SQL Server express instance?

Many thanks indeed!

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Columns Not Showing On Local Host Reporting Services?

Jun 4, 2007

i created a layout in visual studio 2005 with the proper dimensions to print on an Avery 5160 label sheet (3 labels across and 10 down)

in the Body properties, i set Columns to 3, ColumnSpacing to 0.125", and Size 2.625" (W) & 1" (H).

i created a list table with a text box of the same dimension as the Size in the Body.

the thing is when i go to preview the report in visual studio, it just shows all the data but only in one column, but if i click the Print Layout button, it shows all 3 columns, then when i print it, it works! so i assumed that this was just the way visual studio handled the data. no big deal...

the problem is when i upload this to the reporting services on our local intranet and run it from the reporting services, it shows only one column (the left most only) and prints that way too; it's almost like i need a Print Layout button on the reporting services (which there isn't one).

is there something that i need to set so that it will print in 3-column form from the reporting services so people can print on label sheets?

i hope this makes sense. also, i tested this on the same printer just to make sure it wasn't hardware.

Moving A SQL Server 2005 Database From The Local Network To An Online Server.

Mar 7, 2006

Hi All, first post.

I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.

Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)

It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.

The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.

This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.

Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.

So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?

Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.

One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Mark

How To Register Local Server Under Database Engine In SQL Server 2005?

Dec 3, 2007

I want to create a database on my local machine and work with it. But I am not able to see the name of my local server under "Database Engine" in the list of "Registered Servers".

Options I tried:

(1) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "Update Local Server Registration"

(2) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "New" -> Server Registration.
In "New Server Registration" Window, in "Server Name" drop down I clicked "Browse for more" but still in "Browse for Servers" window, I am not able to see the name of my local server in "Local Servers" tag under Database Engine.

(3) If I do File -> Connect Object Explorer -> Connect to Server window in "Server name" drop down box, if I click "Browse for more", I am able to see local server name eg. "XYZ" under Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services but not under "Database Engine"

Please help me create a new database engine in SQL Server 2005 or list my local server under "Database engine" ?

Thanks

SQL 2000 Replication Agents Connecting To Local Host Multiple Times?

Aug 21, 2007

Hi all

I have SQL 2000 SP4 running on a W2K server SP4.

The server acts as a subcriber and publisher and acts as its own distributor.
Each publication uses its own distribution agent and is set to loop.

There are 4 queued updating subscriptions on this box.

When running 3rd party tools to determine open active ports, the replication executables (distrib and logreader) are connecting to local server multiple times. Easily 15+ established connections plus many more waits.

Everything connects to 1433 then opens a new port.

Is this because of the queued updating?

Replication is functioning as it should without any problems.

I even checked our 2 main distribution servers which only act as distributors and there is not one connection from replication to itself.

Any insight would be appreciated

Thx
John

SQL Express 2005 SP2 And Local Service Account

Mar 13, 2007

I'm trying to do an unattended install of SQL Express 2005 SP2, and specify that the service runs under the Local Service account. Prior versions of SQL Express worked fine.

With SQL Express 2005 SP2, however, the install fails on XP Pro SP2. It *does* work on Winows 2003 Server.

Here's the command line I'm using:

SQLEXPR.EXE /QB ADDLOCAL=ALL INSTANCENAME=FOO SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=BAR SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE"

It fails at the end of the install, saying it can't start the service. If I use "NETWORK SERVICE", it works fine, but that's more privileges than I want the service to have. Is there something else on the command line that I can try to get it to work?

Is this even supported?

SQL 2005 Express Local Admin Access Denied

Jan 3, 2007

I am using a standard installation of SQL 2005 Express installed with Visual C# Express. I have tried several connection strings, have tried connecting different databases, all of which end up giving me access denied for user <machineName>Greg (Greg is the local admin account for this PC. I found this guideline for connectivity questions (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=362498&SiteID=1), and have gone through it all, posting the answers to questions here. One thing that may be different about this machine is that it is a tablet PC (WinXP Tablet edition) and I am running VMWare Server. I also tried loading it on a WinXP Pro workstation with no VMWare, and have gotten the same results. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My connection string:
@"Server=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;Database=Database1");

Client error message:
Cannot open database "Database1" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'GREGBORGGreg'.

Client is local to the SQL 2005 Express - this is an application running on a local PC.

I am able to ping -a GREGBORG (as well as localhost)

I am able to telnet to port 1433 of my local machine, although Ctrl+[ does not give me an SQL prompt

I am using ADO.NET 2.0 and Visual C# 2005 Express

I have enabled Shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.

I have no alias' configured, and am not requiring encryption.

=========================
I am using SQL 2005 Express loaded on Windows XP tablet edition.

The SQL browser is not enabled, and it says that it has no enabled devices associated with it.

SQL Server is running under the Network System account

I have tried running it firewalled and not firewalled

I am running Clamwin anti-virus

How Can I Shrink SQL Express Database On Local Machines?

Oct 27, 2006

Hello,

I have deployed a vb.net application to a few laptops that holds the SQL Express database as a local datastore. What is the best way to compress or shrink the database and log files? I would like a way that this can be done automatically or unattended if possible...

Thanks in advance.
