How Can We Avoid Somebody To Access The MDF Data By Doing User Instance Connection?

Dec 11, 2006

I created a database that will be distributed to my customers. This database is running on an Instance of SQL Server 2005 Express edition. I removed the admin logins from my SQL Server Instance so in theory, only my application connecting itself using the Sql Server autenthication will be able to be access the data (using "sa" having a password that I set at the installation).

For now, all this is working fine and after some tests, I haven't been able to access the data in any ways except by using the "sa" and the password my app is the only one to know.

But the problem is coming from a security leak when using User Instance. Indeed, I've been able to create a program getting the content from my MDF file. If somebody try to get connected using User Instance on his own SQL Server instance, he will be able to reach the data.

How could I prevent this to happend? Is there a property or something that could be set into the database that would prevent the database (mdf file) to be used with User Instance?

Thanks!

Error Message: Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server. Only An Integrated Connection Can Generate A User Instance

Mar 3, 2008

 Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring  the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the  SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf).          Plz enlighten me on this.Thanks and Regards,Sankar.

User Instance Connection From Excel 2003

Apr 13, 2008

Hi

I am trying to connect to SQL Express from Excel VBA using an user instance.
I have tried the following connection string:

Driver={SQL Native Client};Server=.SQLExpress;AttachDbFilename=full_path_to_mdf; Database=dbname;Trusted_Connection=Yes;

And I get the following error : Could not open new database 'dbname' CREATE DATABASE is aborted.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

All I want is an Excel document to connect to a .mdf that is stored on a CD (The database will be readonly). I do not want the database to be stored on the users hard drive.

Many Thanks

Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To A Failure In Starting The Process For The User Instance - Vista Business

Feb 20, 2007

Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order.  I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem.
I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista.  If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine.  If I specify the test database in app_data folder, I get the following exception:-

I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine.
Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt.
Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.

Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To Failure In Retrieving The User's Local Application Data Path

Jun 21, 2005

I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application  and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server.When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.

User Instance Db File Not Get Detached After Connection Has Been Closed

Aug 21, 2007

Hi experts,
I have sql express installed on my machine and i'm using visual studio to create database files. After i've build a connection to my database file thru Server Explorer (choose Add attach files) i opened Management Studio Express and  found that the new database has been attached to sqlexpress database engine----technically speaking it's under the user instance which i use to run my visual studio. right?? that's totally fine.My question is, after i'v closed the connection in visual studio, that attached database file still exist.I want it to be detached immediately after i've closed the connection in visual studio.How can i do that?
 I've searched through internet and was told that sp_config can solve this problem by setting the user instance time out. I ran sp_config against my database but did not find that item. Could anybody give me some directions? thanks in advance.

User Instance=True Causes Invalid Connection String

Feb 14, 2006

Whenever I use "User Instance=True" as in the connection string below, I get an invalid connection string error. If I take it out, the connection string generates other errors.

"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;User Instance=True;AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|DbName.mdf;Data Source=.\sqlexpress;"

Removing User Instance=True always eliminates the invalid connection string message.

BTW, I tried both Data Source=.\sqlexpress and Data Source=.sqlexpress.

Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To A Failure In Starting The Process For The User Instance

May 25, 2006

Hello everyone,

I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.

Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:

in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:

"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."

If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:

"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.

I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?

All this happens on local machine.

Thanks to everybody who can help!

Jeff

How To Fix Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To A Failure In Starting The Process For The User Instance

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
---------------------------
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

OK

I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?

I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.

My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.

Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To A Failure In Starting The Process For The User Instance

Mar 12, 2006

No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum.
€śFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€?
I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again.
I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it.
SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients.
What is causing this?
This is some information on the system I am using:

MS XP (SP2)

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727
Installed Edition: Standard

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.1.2600

I am now to programming but nor computer illiterate. I have been working with MS SQL servers since version 6.5 and have MCSE, Network+, A+ and Security plus certifications. Installing and using VS should not be this problematic. What is wrong with Microsoft?

Multi-user Access Through A Data-access Layer/remoting Server

Oct 30, 2007

Hi guys,

I've been developing desktop client-server and web apps and have used Access and SQL Server Standard most of the time.
I'm looking into using SQL CE, and had a few questions that I can't seem to get a clear picture on:

- The documentation for CE says that it supports 256 simultaneous connections and offers the Isolation levels, Transactions, Locking, etc with a 4GB DB. But most people say that CE is strictly a single-user DB and should not be used as a DB Server.
Could CE be extended for use as a multi-user DB Server by creating a custom server such as a .NET Remoting Server hosted through a Windows Service (or any other custom host) on a machine whereby the CE DB would run in-process with this server on the machine which would then be accessed by multiple users from multiple machines??
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE

- and further more can we use Enterprise Services (Serviced Components) to connect to SQL CE and further extend this model to offer a pure high-quality DB Server?
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> Enterprise Services -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE

Seems quite doable to me, but I may be wrong..please let me know either ways

Thanks,
CP

Connection Pool To Access Sql Server For Multiple User?

Dec 12, 2007

HI,

I am using SqlServer2005 as data base for my web application. I am able to connect to the database through DBCP connection pool . Its working fine for 2 user. When ever 2 users do transaction, it works fine. But 3 users do the transaction, its trowning error.Even i increase the pool size the behavior is same.
error:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Server failed to resume the transaction, desc: 3f00000002.

For a change I wrote a connection pool to access the DB. I am getting the same error. i.e. Its working fine for 2 user and throws error for more than 2 users.

Is there any setting to be made?

Same application is working fine for Oracle10g.

Data Access :: Server Rejected The Connection - Access To Selected Database Has Been Denied

I have recently upgraded to SQL2014 on Win2012. The Access front end program works fine.

But, previously created Excel reports with built in MS Queries now fail with the above error for users with MS 2013.  The queries still work for users still using MS 2007.

I also cannot create any new queries and get the same error message. If I log on as myself on the domain to another PC with 2007 installed it works fine, so I don't think it is anything to do with AD groups or permissions.

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.FNSafeString
(
@strValuevarchar(8000),-- STRING Value to convert to SAFE string
@intModeint = 0-- 0=NULL as '[NULL]', 1=NULL as ''
)
RETURNS varchar(8000)
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
BEGIN
RETURN COALESCE(@strValue,
CASE WHEN @intMode = 0
THEN '[NULL]'
ELSE ''
END
)
END

Its a little bit too big to really want to have to write it in each place where I need to use it, and its just big enough that it is worth centralising, and it might just be that I could code it more efficiently / different / handle more "edge cases" in the future.I do have even more straightforward UDFs - just to avoid typing something "Lengthy"

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.FNDateMidnight
(
@dtDateTimedatetime-- Date/Time Value to adjust
)
RETURNS datetime
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
BEGIN
RETURNDATEADD(Day, DATEDIFF(Day, 0, @dtDateTime)+1, 0)
END

Perhaps I should consider changing them to inline table valued functions, or CROSS APPLY them? but I can't think of a way to centralised them and re-use the code WITHOUT a function, can I?

How To Avoid The Need Of Adding User In Administrator Group.

Oct 5, 2006

Hi,

I've created an rdl report in reporting services 2005. Report is working fine. I've deployed this report on SQL Server 2005. The problem is this that to access the reports from client, I need to add client's login ID in Administrator user's group os server. If I dont add them in that group, it shows following error:

"The permissions granted to user 'loginname' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)".

This solution works fine in development but in actual environment, I can't add users in that group. Can anyone tell me how to view reports without adding user in administrator group. Its urgent.

Looking forward for help.

Help:SQLExpress User Instance Fails For Normal User; Works For Administrator

Jan 22, 2008

I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.

Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.

As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.

For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.

I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.

Can anyone help me with this?

User Control Data Access Error

Mar 3, 2008

When creating a user control (ascx) and registering it in the webpage, an error occurred:
"Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
This error does not appear when creating data access normally, and I don't use username/password for the northwind database; any suggestions.

Change Connected User To Avoid Owner Prefix In Queries

Mar 16, 2007

Hi everybody,I've five instances of SQL Server 2000 with the SAME database with aDIFFERENT owner in each server. I, as the administrator, have a lot ofqueries that I have to execute in some or all servers. The problem isthat I have to connect to all servers with MY user, not each of the dbowners...So I have queries this way:select * from mike.table1 t1 join mike.table2 t2 on...And when I connect to another server I have to change mike for jeremyin all the SQLs...And when I connect to another server I have to change jeremy for ninain all the SQLs...I know that there was an old, v7, deprecated way to change the"schema", something likechange current user to kimberlygoselect * from table1 t1 join table2 t2 on...This way, I'll change ONLY once the connected user. I could even do atthe beginning of the script an IF, to change the connected userdepending on @@SERVERNAME !!!Can someone remember this instruction???Thanks in advance for your help !!!

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

Nov 15, 2007

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
 but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...
