How Many People Can Login To SQL Server With The Same User Account?

I'm developing a client-server application using Visual Basic and SQL Server
6.5 for 700 users. The application currently requires users to login to the
database using their network account (via trusted connections). Each of the
users takes up a maximum of 6 connections. Unfortunately, other
considerations will force us to discard use of trusted connections. So it
only leaves us either to create 700 user accounts on SQL Server separately
from their network logins or to create one SQL Server account and everybody
uses that same account to login to the database. For political reasons, the
customer would prefer not to ask their support group to maintain 700 user
accounts on SQL Server if it can be avoided.
My question: is there any technical limitation or other negative consequence
of having 700 users login to the same account to SQL Server if SQL Server
can handle that many connections (it would be 6*700 = 4200 connections)
simultaneously? Are we supposed to do things like this? It seems that we
don’t have better choice than this.
I would like to write code to delete and add a SQL Login to every User database on my development server. Whenever I restore databases to dev using production backups the SQl Server logins are invalid and I need to delete them from the user database and add them again.
I've already hard-coded a sql server job with n steps... a step for each user database to drop and add this sql user to each database. This isn't optimal since I have to add or delete a step everytime a user database is added or deleted.
Does anyone know how to write a loop or cursor that does this dynamically? I am doing something syntactically wrong related to the GO statement.

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database. When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and push 'Test connection' button. everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things, from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore.... it only work when i restart the computer.
I am getting the error: Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed. When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003. I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at. My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions? I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role. Is that correct?
Dear All, I currently installed visual studio 2005. So together it als install sql server express. So then I install the sql server management studio express too. So the problem now I want to do is run asp.net pages. I want to know how to create a local account with my own password. Because now I can only login using default windows authentication so how can I create an account with for sql server authentication ? Another question is that for the server address in my asp.net page what must I write localhost or the name shown in the server name text box while logging in. Thanks.
I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.

hi , i am getting the above error message once in a while maybe two or 3 times a week , and then it goes away in 10 to 15 minutes or 5 minutes ,
our mode is set to mixed and we are able to connect and use both sql and windows , but once in a while , it will give us the above message when we try connecting throught sql server management studio client (using sql 05) using windows login , although it lets us connect using sql login while the windows login is denied, and after a while it lets us connect with both.
occurs randomly on some days , we run our servers on VM ware virtual machines using windows 2003 r2 enterprise 64 bit with sp2 with esx 301 virtual machine.
If we have a "pool" SQL login, a one that uses SQL Server authentication, and this login is used by different domain account to access SQL Server, is there a way to audit which domain account used that "pool" login to do something on a object in SQL Server? Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.
However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...
Last week I was receiving an error when trying to connect to two of our seven sql servers from my laptop via my domain admin account. The only fix was to have my laptop rebuilt and everything re-installed.
Today however another administrator is starting to have the same problem but to only one of the seven servers! When that administrator uses my laptop with her domain admin account it works!?
What could possibly be going wrong with our laptops? We have not installed or changed anything.

Hi, I have a copy of VS2005 and i have installed the Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition I am trying to do my first connection using ASP.net (yay for me...) and it has failed...with this error..Login failed for user 'testuser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
can someone please point out why? yes i know that the error seems pretty straight forward but how do i fix it? like how do i make the user a trusted server connection? where do i do it? and what are the steps? the user is an administrator and by rights should have all access to everything....

btw while your reading do you have any examples of opening a db with the connection string in the web.config file? because i get some error "connection string has not been initialised" using the system.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.Get i though i would stick to the top code first before i tackled the web config error first....
All the research I found dealing with this problem is that the solution is to set SQLserver to mix mode. I have SQL server already set to mix mode. I am not sure what else to do. We have setup a SCOM 2007 Server and in this we have SQL 2005 SP2, We are using two accounts one for OPRATIONAL DATABASE and another one for REPORTING DATABASE after this setup everything was working fine but suddenly my SDK account which is for REPROTING DATABASE was locked by entering wrong password and afterwards I unlocked the password but SINCE this i'm not able to connect to my REPORTING DATABASE and i'm getting following ERROR:- Login Failed for user 'username'. Taken following action to rectify this problem: 1) Resetting the SDK password with the same password. 2) Restarted all the SQL and SCOM services. 3) Restarted the Server as well. 4) Converted from WINDOWS AUTHENTICATION mode to MIXED mode.
But the problem is still persisting, Please help ASAP.
I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command.Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. I've seen many, many, many, many posts regarding this topic - but none have been able to fully explain nor fix my problem.I've developed a security solution according to Scott Gu's guide and it works great - but only on my local machine running VWD and SQLExp2005. Once I move this application it completely breaks in the productions environment. Today I managed to get it halfway there. I created a SQL login and changed my web.config to use these credentials - now the web application will come up, but none of my links (that are role based) are displayed - most likely because i'm authenticating as the SQL credentials instead of me. So I switch it back to windows authenticated, as it is on my laptop, and it breaks again. Please tell me theres a way to get this working in production and Scott's fantastic tutorial hasn't wasted me 2 weeks of work. Hi I'm making a website and will upload it next via ftp but i need to access the local server for database retrieval from this website. i'm doing so first time so not sure about its working and isues. Arrgh! I've check and to make sure SQL Server and Windows Authentication option is selected. We are wanting to use SQLEXPRESS in a workgroup called REALITY, no servers just PCs. I have four PCs in this workgroup and need them all to share the same database from one of the PCs. I can share folders and map a network drive but can not connect to the SQLEXPRESS database remotely.
I have set server authentication mode to Windows and SQL and have enable local and remote connections (TCP/IP only) in the surface area. After making these modifications I was able to connect to the database through the SQL Server Management Studio Express after I enable the guest account. When I first started I had numerous connection errors and have worked through them all by performing the above and was only finally able to connect after enabling the guest account and adding said account to the SecurityLogins. However, today I am unable to connect I have double and triple checked the settings and still continue to receive the same error.
