...do I use the rtrim function ?...what would the syntax look like ?

Does anyone know if it is possible to add a column to a table at a particular position. The ALTER TABLE statement specifies that an ADD COLUMN puts this on the end of the table. Is there a way to insert into the middle of the table?
Alternatively, can it be done through SQL-DMO?
Obviously the fallback would be to drop and re-create the table with the correct column ordering, however this is not ideal for tables with large amounts of data.
It's possible to do this through Enterprise Manager (using Insert Column), so how does it do it - DMO, or by dropping and re-creating?
We're building a database schema upgrage tool and are trying to cover all possibilities.

I am so frustrated, I don't know what to do. I have spoken to everyone that I know on how to explain this error message, but my supervisor wants to dispute every thing I tell him.

I have two environments (2 seperate companies on seperate servers). In Environment #1 (referred to as Env1 from this point on) that runs the report and generates a few of these errors (10 for an example). In Environment #2, the same report only modified SLIGHTLY for the other company, runs the report and generates 50 errors. I'd be more than happy to post the log here if someone needs it.
Someone, please, save me from logfile hell. I have told this supervisor that "No data for the field" pretty much means that there was NO DATA RETURNED. We know for a FACT that these two environments are completely different. One runs on real servers and the other is running on partial real servers and virtual servers. We have identified several differences in the configurations, but he wants me to nail down EXACTLY what is causing this error. Please remember, "No Data" is not a good enough response for this person.

I have a very strange situation. I've increased the size of an NVARCHAR field from 8 to 9 in a database table. The format of the data that I enter will either be an 8 character field (123456-8) or a 9 character field (1234567-9). The '-' is critical.
It used to only accept the 8 character version, but after increasing the field size, if I try to insert the 9 character field version, it gets truncated after the '-', as though it's still only allowing 8 characters. But that only occurs when I include the '-' or other such characters like '#'. If I try to insert 1234567a9, it works. The following explains the outcomes:
Inserted Value -> Result in table
123456-8 -> 123456-8Â Â Â Â Â Â *Correct
1234567-9 -> 1234567-Â Â Â Â Â *Wrong
123456789 -> 123456789Â Â Â *Correct

I would like to order this field but only use the 0004-3-2007 part of the field to order it. Hi everyone.
So as the subject says, I have a few fields that are nvarchar but hold date information. Most of these fields I have been able to move to datetime easiliy enough, simply by going into edit mode for the table and converting the fields to datetime. But 1 field is giving me problems I keep getting this error.

There appears to be date data within Informix that will not convert properly when moving into SQL. Since the error is appearing at the 1.5million (approx.) record. I figured on changing from datetime to nvarchar. Works like a charm! :-)
My new problem is converting it back to datetime so I can query against the date without having to create scripts to parse the field.
The data in SQL currently looks like this -> 2000-11-29 (nvarchar(50))
I would like to have it -> 11/29/00 (datetime)

Here's the issue. I have a table Expression (ExpID, ExpText) with values like 'x < 100' and 'y ≤ 200'. where the second example contains Unicode character 8804 [that is, nchar(8804)]. Because it's unicode, I don't seem to be able to search for it with LIKE or PATINDEX. These fail:

Trying to get the lowest unused value of CrewID from the below table in a efficient manner. I cant change the table structure as its from a 3rd party and it would break our support agreement.

Ok I have upgraded my works database from a poorly designed Access database to a SQL database. The previous system allowed NULL values and duplicates to be inserted into a field that should NOT ALLOW NULL Values or duplicates. Therefore, this issue has now been moved across to my new system as I cannot set these constraints on the field that has multiple NULL values.
My solution would be to use a sequential operator, so whatever = NULL would be changed to a sequential number that us as administrators would know was a bogus number starting at something like = 999999900 counting up from that. There are only 250 records that would require updating.
To make things more interesting this field is not a integer type, its a Nvarchar type as its a Hardware ID. Both numerical and characters are require.

As you can see, I'm totally new at Sql Server.
I have a problem, I store text into a nvarchar field (could be a 200 or 20,000 characters long string), inside the text there are several carriage returns which I would like to preserve to later presentation, but when retreiving the data from sql server I got the "cr" as "?", also I opened the database from Sql Managment and all cr's were saved as "?".
What can I do to preserve the cr inside each field ?

Hi All,I am trying to insert symbols in a field of a table. I am using the datatype nvarchar for the field.However when i tried to insert a statement with the symbol pi, it comes out as following:(A) 100? cm2 (B) 140? cm2 (C) 200? cm2All the pi symbol are converted to ?.Can ne 1 tell me how i can store such strings in the field.Thanks

I'm trying to insert a string expression into a varbinary field. I've tried it several ways, but the data does not seem to get inserted.
I map DT_STR field ("T") with varbinary field in destination table and the package executes properly, but when I see the data that it has been loaded I only see empty values (0x).
I have also tried other approaches, like converting to DT_BYTES during SSIS flow, but I always get the same result.
Any idea of how to achieve this?

I am trying to insert the following data (as you can see fields are seperated with the | ):

Since I have defined column 2 as an identity column, I don't understand why SQL Query analyzer is upset when I do not have a value in that field. To me, I would think it would auto-insert an integer (starting at seed 1 and incrementing by 1), but it doesn't. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I am trying to insert 1000000.00 into my sql table from a webpage. I as long as the amount is 999.99 or less it works fine, once higher then that amount it gives me an error.
Below is the code I am using to do the insert, it gets the error on the insert and the update both:

I have a datetime field in a database which I am programmatically inserting values into. The field can be null or not null. However, I am having problems inserting NULL as part of my SQLCommand.
The value is pulled from a text box (linked to a calendar extender) and when I select a value it is being inserted fine. If I just leave the box blank though, I want the field to be set to NULL. I have tried adding in ,DBNULL.Value, as part of my VALUES(…) string, but this throws an exception. I Have tried just inserting ‘’ but that also throws an exception (“The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value�), so I don’t know how I can insert this value when the field is blank?

I was wondering if someone could give me some insight to why i may be having this SQL 05 problem. I have setup a series of cells using say vchar(max). However when i go into add data in the table if I enter anything on of the word i.e. insert(Hello my name is) This red circle with an exclamation mark ( ! ) pops up and then if i continue to do another row it wont let me continue.
The message i get is
Error Source: .netSql Client Data provider
Error message: String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated,
Then it says to fix this or press escape, i have never seen this before can help me out as I have no idea why this is happening.
Any help much appreciated.
