I have to do a lot of SQL Server Express 2005 installations and I've noticed that when I'm doing an install on a machine that's on a large network that the installer will "hang" towards the end of the installation process. The installer will say something about Local Groups and sit there for a really long time. As soon as I take the machine off of the network though (via unplugging the network cable) the installer jumps back into action. Of course, I've not seen this on a stand alone machine either...
It would seem to me that the installer is trying to communicate via the network or something and then when it loses its LAN access it just moves on. But I'm not entirely sure why it would need to do that. More importantly, is there a way that I can keep it from doing this? I'm doing a silent install so maybe I can use a command line swith or property?
In reviewing the command line options I didn't see much that seemed to fit; but perhaps one of you folks know of a way to achieve this.
Hi,Currently it is running on SQL 7.00.623 on Winnt 4.0+SP5.Now i want to upgrade this with SP 4.As i follow the installation procedure according to MicrosoftSQL7SP4 readme help, It hangs during the installation of Mdac_typ.exe.Don't know where and whats went wrong with the procedure.I've tried 3-4 times to install it but the same problem raises. I am trying to install SQL 2005 SP1 on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 platform. I have repeatedly tried this, and have trashed and re-built the platform all to no avail. I keep getting the same problem. The installation hangs, using 0 CPU apparently after successfully extracting the files to disk. It leaves the HOTFIX.EXE running, and cancelling it ends the process. The HOTFIX.LOG looks like this:
After reading this I cancelled the CMD.EXE instead of the HOTFIX.EXE and duly got a "Product Enumeration" popup window. The HOTFIX.LOG now looks like this:
I just bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed and was able to install Visual Studio 2005 Pro, but when attempting to install SQL Server 2005 it just hangs at the IIS detection step. I was using the administrative account. I was able to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2000, but I need 2005.
Some posts mention IIS version issues and 32 vs 64 bit version issues. Can anyone ellaborate on what is happening and why? What is the work around?
After the installer has asked for authentication mode and has started verifying the authentication it simply hangs. I've let it sit there for an hour before taking the installer forcibly down but nothing seems to be happening except for two osql.exe processes showing up in the task manager.
I've tried both windows authentication and SQL server authentication but the outcome is always the same. At the same time I'm, however, able to login to the database engine and all services with management studio using both authentication modes.
The last few lines in HotFix.log are as follows:
05/09/2006 09:49:09.999 Authenticating user using Windows Authentication 05/09/2006 09:49:10.015 SQL Service MSSQLServer was previously running, ready for authentication 05/09/2006 09:49:10.218 SQL Agent Service SQLSERVERAGENT was previously running 05/09/2006 09:49:12.093 User authentication was successful
This would indicate that there's nothing wrong with the authentication but with whatever is supposed to take place after that.
There are quite a few lines in the log similar to the one below:
05/09/2006 09:47:08.438 Failed to read associated hotfix build information for the following file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBinnSQLServr.exe
Redist9_Hotfix_KB913090.log seems to be the only individual log file that ends with line saying "Hotfix package launched" whereas all other logs have several lines of checks being completed successfully.
Any ideas what might be causing the installer to hang and how to fix it?
During installation of MSDE the installation hangs at "please wait while Windows configures microsoft sql server desktop engine" I always end up killing the installation process. I am trying to install Windows XPe dev kit and this is the step I am getting stuck on. If I try to skip this step and setup the database the setup obviously tells me that i dont have sql 200 or MSDE installed.
The KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811479 describes the syptoms perfectly, but fast user switching isnt even enabled for this machine and is not the source of the problem.
I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:
OWC11
SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files
SQL Server Database Services
Reporting Services
Visual Studio Integrated Development
SQL Server Books Online
SQLXML4
Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.
The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.
I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.
Does anyone know of the procedure, steps that need to be followed to allow installing SQL 2005 Express from a network? Since SQL 2005 express requires .NET 2 and the MSI engine 3.1 and MDAC 2.8 it is a real problem pushing it from a network such as active directory using an AIP (Administrator Installation Point).
This is a very bizzare one. I have installed SQL many times and never had this problem. I had a user self install SQL 2005, as it turns out, he installed the wrong components, so a co-worker uninstalled it for him. We followed the support doc for the uninstall, because we had errors when tried to remove it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967
After, we were able to re-install (we installed this time via the command line), but for some odd reason we have completely lost the ability to print to ANY network printer. I didn't think this was possible, but I tried it on my machine and now I too am unable to print!
A couple of details:
Both machines:
XP-SP2 HP dx7400 Printers: a variety of HP Networked Printers (can't print to any) I have added and removed the printers multiple times and tried adding via a local port... no luck There is no error in the event log If I try to print a test page, I get an error box that says "Test Page Failed to Print"
Since there are no real errors for the print issue, I am struggling to find a solution. Has anyone ever seen this??
We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.
This site receives the following error as seen in the topic: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.
We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:
Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.
The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.
Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.
Hi While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears. Does somebody knows why?
I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.
My application is running fine, as i can login to it and also able to view pages. But when i open Order management(having 3K records) its give me error,
General Network Error. Check your network documentation
I have also searched many articles and tried following solutions but nothing working
- connectiontimeout = 0, max pool size = 7500/100, pooling = false
- SSL disabling enforce security false as mentioned in microsoft kb article.
And there's nothing any issue with hardware/firewall as my application's login and other forms are working fine(which use same database with same connection string)

Please help,I am trying to install MSDE 2000 so that Backup exec will run on thisserver. I have gotten so far as to find an entry in my SQLSTP.TXT filethat says that c:mssql7 was detected so the install fails. Now, to start with there is no directory called C:mssql7 on thisserver. I have gone through all MS articles on manual removal of SQLserver and instances. I have searched the registry for mssql7 andremoved any keys that matched, as per MS article I have searched onSQLBOOT.dll and it is not present anywhere on my system and I still getthe same results.2:07:44 Begin Action: Detection12:07:44 SQL Server version already installed: 7.00.62312:07:44 Previous Install SQL Path: C:MSSQL712:07:44 Previous Install SQL Data Path: C:MSSQL712:07:44 End Action Detection12:07:44 Begin Action: ODBCLocked12:07:44 End Action ODBCLocked12:07:44 GetDefinition returned: 112:07:44 Previous SQL Server ProductType: MSDE [0x4]12:07:44 This combination of Package and Operating System allows a fullproduct install.can anyone think of anything here..what else could be causing the server to think there is a previousversion of SQL 7 on this box!!!?
I get an error when trying to install the SQL Native Client. It says it cannot find the installation package and to use a valid copy of 'sqlncli.msi'. I've downloaded the Express setup twice and get the same error from both of them.
I'm attempting this in a VMWare session setup for Windows 2K, Advanced Server. I am trying to test my installation and setup procedures. This is not a production setup, just install testing and documentation. I have allocated only 272MB to the VMWare session, which is why the system doesn't meet the recommended settings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Below is the Summary.txt output file.

I posted a message about this yesterday but I have more info..
I have a server (SQL 7.0, sp2) that anywhere I connect to it through EM the EM hangs. I can drill down into the server and even get into the Security drop down but if I hit Databases to drill down or Management etc. It hangs.
I did profiler on this and another server. When I click the + by the Database folder I hang and get "TSQL:Batch Starting: exec sp_MSdbuseraccess N'db', N'%'" but never get a "TSQL:BatchCompleted" for that statement. (Where other working servers I do get the set of both start and completed)
Drilling into the Security tab runs the query: exec sp_MSDBUserpriv... etc.) and this one works..
Anyone have any info on: exec sp_MSdbuseraccess N'db', N'%'
I can't find anything in BOL, Microsoft KB, Technet etc.. Please Help as there are certain things I can't do without EM... THANKS!!!
I have been trying all day to install SQL 7.0 on an NT 4.0 SP6a server. It gets to the point where it wants to load MDAC and just goes out to lunch. No errors are generated and the rest of the system does not appear to be affected. However, the only way to end the install is to end task it. Has anyone run into this?
Some of my jobs hang at FTP step for several hours until some one kills the FTP (it's a perl process) on the box. Is there a way to find how much time a particular step of the job is executing? and know it by somehow if it's hanging at that step?? If we know this,I want to kill the perl process(FTP) on the box in an automated way whenever the job hangs! Any ideas welcome!! Thanks. :-)
Hi all - I'm having a problem with a dts job that I haven't run across before. The function of the job itself is pretty basic just moving data into a sql table using a few lookups and mappings. The job starts fine and gets to a status of 5000 records processed and just sits there. It's doesn't go into a 'not responding state' nor does it produce any error information in the error file I set up. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening? How to identify the specific record it may be hanging on? Help!! - this one is driving me nuts.
I'm running a pretty simply DTS just to pump some data into a table. Nothing fancy just a couple lookups and a couple columns being copied over. I get to 5000 records processed and the DTS just spins its wheels. It does not go into a 'not responding' state. There are no indexes on the table and the db size is plenty big so it is not reindexing or resizing the db at this point. Any ideas on how I can debug this one would be greatly appreciated.
