Execution Time For Stored Procedure Vs. Query Analyzer

Feb 21, 2002

HI,
I have an interesting situation. I have created a stored procedure which has a select union query and it accepts some parameters. When I execute this procedure it takes 8 minutes. When I copy the script in stored procedure and run it directly in Query Analyzer it takes 2 1/2 minutes?? Same numbers of rows are returned either way in the result set with about 13,000.

I cannot figure this out and it is almost the same thing except that in Query Analyzer I declare the parameters variables and its values?

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

Stored Procedure Vs SQL Huge Difference In Execution Time

Jul 23, 2005

I have a Stored Procedure (SP) that creates the data required for areport that I show on a web page. The SP does all the work and justreturns back a results set that I dump in an ASP.NET DataGrid. The SPtakes a product area and a start and end date as parameters.Here are the basics of the SP.1.Create temp table to store report results, all columns are createdthat will be needed at this point.2.Select products and general product data into the temp table.3.Create a cursor that loops through all the products in the temptable, running a more complex query with each individual product.4.The results of that query are updated on the temp table based on thecurrent product of the cursor.5.A complex "totals" query is run and the results from that areinserted into the temp table as the last 3 rows.In all we are talking about 120 rows in the temp table with 8 columnsthat are mostly numbers.I originally wrote this report SP about a month ago and it worked fine,ran in about 10 - 20 seconds based on server traffic and amount ofdata in the temp table. For the example I'm running there are the120 products.Just yesterday the (SP started timing out and when I ran the SPmanually from Query Analyzer (QA) (exec SP_NAME ... ) with the sameparameters as it was getting in the code it took 6 minutes to complete.I was floored. I immediately copied the SQL out of the SP and pastedinto another QA window, changed the variables to be hard coded valuesand ran it. It completed in 10 seconds.I'm really confused now. I ran a Profiler on the 2 when I ran themagain. The SQL code in QA executed again in ~10 seconds with 65,000reads. When the SP finished some 6 minutes later it had completed witthe right results but it needed 150,000,000 reads to do its job.How can the exact same SQL code produce such different results (time,disk reads) based on whether its in a SP or just run from QA but stillgive me the exact same output. The reports both look correct and havethe same numbers of rows.I asked my Sys Admin if he had done anything to anything and he saidno.I've been reading about recompiles and temp table indexes and allkinds of other stuff that could possibly be affecting it but havegotten nowhere.Any ideas are appreciated.

How To Replace The Existing Records In The Table From Updates In The Transactional File

Sep 13, 2007

Hi i am getting a weekly transaction file which has two columns trans code and trans date to indicate whether the record is changed, added or modified . and the monthly master file contains blank in these two fields.

How do i update the row coming from the transaction file in the tables which contain the rows from the master file .

to better explain the example is
Master File

ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 2777

Transaction File indicating change

ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007

the ouput should be

2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007

replacing the existing row in the table(updating the whole row)

i have 50 columns in my table and based on the two fields i should replace the rows exisiting in table and if ID doesnot match exist just add them as a new row.

what transformation should i use .... to replace all the columns which have matching ID in table to the current record from trans file and if there doesnt exist matching id just add them as new row.

Thanks...

Firing A Trigger When A User Updates Data But Not When A Stored Procedure Updates Data

Dec 19, 2007

I have a project that consists of a SQL db with an Access front end as the user interface. Here is the structure of the table on which this question is based:

Code Block

create table #IncomeAndExpenseData (
recordID nvarchar(5)NOT NULL,
itemID int NOT NULL,
itemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL,
monthitemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL
)
The itemvalue field is where the user enters his/her numbers via Access. There is an IncomeAndExpenseCodes table as well which holds item information, including the itemID and entry unit of measure. Some itemIDs have an entry unit of measure of $/mo, while others are entered in terms of $/yr, others in %/yr.

For itemvalues of itemIDs with entry units of measure that are not $/mo a stored procedure performs calculations which converts them into numbers that has a unit of measure of $/mo and updates IncomeAndExpenseData putting these numbers in the monthitemvalue field. This stored procedure is written to only calculate values for monthitemvalue fields which are null in order to avoid recalculating every single row in the table.

If the user edits the itemvalue field there is a trigger on IncomeAndExpenseData which sets the monthitemvalue to null so the stored procedure recalculates the monthitemvalue for the changed rows. However, it appears this trigger is also setting monthitemvalue to null after the stored procedure updates the IncomeAndExpenseData table with the recalculated monthitemvalues, thus wiping out the answers.

How do I write a trigger that sets the monthitemvalue to null only when the user edits the itemvalue field, not when the stored procedure puts the recalculated monthitemvalue into the IncomeAndExpenseData table?

(Could Not Find Stored Procedure ''.) When Calling A User Defined Procedure

Feb 4, 2008

Hi,I'm tring to call a stored procedure i'v made from a DNN module, via .net control.When I try to execute this sql statement: EXEC my_proc_name 'prm_1', 'prm_2', ... the system displays this error: Could not find stored procedure ''. (including the trailings [".] chars :)I've tried to run the EXEC statement from SqlServerManagement Studio, and seems to works fine, but sometimes it displays the same error. So i've added the dbname and dbowner as prefix to my procedure name in the exec statement and then in SqlSrv ManStudio ALWAYS works, but in dnn it NEVER worked... Why? I think it could be a db permission problem but i'm not able to fix this trouble, since i'm not a db specialist and i don't know which contraint could give this problem. Also i've set to the ASPNET user the execute permissions for my procedure... nothing changes :( Shoud someone could help me? Note that I'm using a SqlDataSource object running the statement with the select() method (and by setting the appropriate SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.StoredProcedure ) and I'm using the 2005 sql server express Thank in advance,(/d

Updating 2 Table At The Same Time Using Stored Procedure

I have two tables: Category and Product.
CategoryID is the Foreign Key of Product table.
I want to update those tables at the same time using stored procedure.

It will work like this.
If I update the Display column of Category table to have the value of 0, it will also update any records in the Product table -that has the same CategoryID- to have the value of 0 in its Display column.

I just read something about trigger and bit gives me idea that I might use it for this case, but don't know how to write the SQL.

Can anyone please help me...

Ad Hoc Query Vs Stored Procedure Performance Vs DTS Execution Of Stored Procedure

Jan 23, 2008

Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio

What could explain this?

Obviously,

All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.

Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).

The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes

Problem With Stored Procedure Which Updates Rows

Jan 5, 2008

Hi dear users,
I have created procedure which main function is to update row of the table. Below, there is SQL code of this procedure.

Code Block

CREATE PROCEDURE Zakl_UpdateRow
@zakl_id INT,
@zakl_nazwa VARCHAR(25),
@zakl_miasto VARCHAR(20),
@zakl_ulica VARCHAR(30)
AS
UPDATE Zaklady SET
Zakl_Nazwa=@zakl_nazwa,
Zakl_Miasto=@zakl_miasto,
Zakl_Ulica=@zakl_ulica
WHERE Zakl_ID=@zakl_id

When I execute this procedure I have to give all declared variables: "@zakl_id", "@zakl_nazwa" and so on. Sometimes I don't want to update all columns in the row but only one f.ex name of the street ("Zakl_Ulica"). And I want other colums of the row to stay the same ("Zakl_Nazwa","Zakl_Miasto"). There is no point in rewriting values of "Zakl_Nazwa","Zakl_Miasto" as I want only to change value of "Zakl_Ulica".

this is execution clause

Code Block

EXECUTE Zakl_UpdateRow @zakl_id=70, @zakl_ulica='kosciuszki 7'
If I don't ascribe value to the variables (@zakl_nazwa, @zakl_miasto ), the columns in the row ("Zakl_Nazwa","Zakl_Miasto") should stay unchanged.

So what should I modify in my procedure, to have it working?

Best Regards

Maciej

Stored Procedure Doesn't Recompile After Replication Updates Underlying Tables

We have on demand snapshot replication set up between 2 servers. When the subscriber applies the snapshot, our stored procedures start executing very slowly. Updating statistics and rebuilding indexes does not resolve the problem, however; executing sp_recompile on the affected stored procedures does fix the problem. Is this a known issue with replication? Is there a better workaround than manually recompiling stored procedures after every snapshot?

Dataset With Existing Stored Procedure

I am trying to use a dataset for the first time and I've run into a roadblock early.  I added the dataset to the AppCode folder, set the connection string, and selected 'use existing stored procedures' in the configuration wizard.  The problem is that there are three input parameters on this procedure and they're not showing up in the 'Set select procedure parameters' box.  I went through several of the stored procedures and this is the case for all of them.  The weird thing is that if I select the same procedure as an insert procedure then the parameters do show up.  Very frustrating, any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
