Login Permission + Login Screen
May 1, 2008
HI all
Currently we have a report manager up and running (SQL Standard 2000), and every one can access to this report, since this report has been abused by some users. So I need to restrict only manager(s) user can have access to it and it should prompt a login screen for username and password as it happens only when I try to open http:\server
eports locally then I got a login screen for username and password, however when I try to open the report on different workstation remotely I don't have login screen and I am able to connect/ open the report.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi guys,
I recently installed SQL 2005 SP2 on my Vista x64 system. However, when I launch the SQL Server Management Studio, I don't see any server names available, even though I have one called SQL2005 listed as running in the Configuration Manager.
Any idea what I did wrong?
When I type in the correct SQL Server name "SQL2005" and click connect I get this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to SQL2005.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)
Thanks in advance guys!!!

Just reporting a quirky thing here... not sure if it is a config issue for our site, or a bug or what. Just want to put it on the radar screen.
We're running AD here. Have Report Services up and have been running about 6 months now.
People on the domain log into the report site just fine.
Recently I rec'd what I thought would be a security problem, but now I'm not so sure. Our COO tried to export an inventory turns report to excel. About half way through the process after he selects 'Open' a login pops.
The problem is that even if the user puts in valid login credentials, the login just pops again, as if there is something incorrect in the values being typed in.
I was able to replicate this on my machine, even logging in as Administrator.
But, I was also, as a regular user on the domain, able to export several other reports. Only the Inventory turns report pops the login on export.
Then it dawned on me, the inventory report uses a group by table that is expandable by product line.
The reality that is shielded from us when all the groups are collapsed is that as of this morning, the total rows in the table exceed 183,000 lines, way more than what one worksheet can hold.
I'm assuming this has something to do with it, but why I wouldn't just see the standard excel error about this and get a login pop instead perplexes me.
Can anyone confirm that this is indeed what happens if you try to export to excel more rows than a worksheet can hold?
I'm trying to figure out if we have a problem or if it is a 'bug' type of thing.

I created a new login name. I checked 3 databases in User Mapping. I tried to mimic an existing login name. When I right clicked at the database and selected Properties. I selected the Permission tab at the left. It showed both login names under users or roles. I selected the existing login name and clicked the Effective Permissions button. The login has all permissions: Alter, Create, Select, Insert, Update, Delete, Execute, Connect, etc. When I selected the new login name and clicked the Effective Permission button, the login has only Connect. Why the new login name does not have all other permissions? And how can I assign to it?
Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
I need your input. When, if ever, should programmers be given the 'sa' login. The reason that I ask is because a group of three developers have approached me asking for the 'sa' login so they could write stored procedures and do some database level tasks. I am relatively new to data admin and I am under the opinion that I should probably just alias their login to 'dbo' on the one database that they are developing their app for.
What do you guys think about this.
Thanks in Advance,
Terry

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?

I tried asking the same question in other forum but couldn't get an answer.
I used exactly the following SQL to create a login with sa account in SQL2k5 Management Studio:
Create Login yy With Password='yy123Z'
Without granting any permission, straight away, i log out sa and login as yy in management studio, yy somehow can access one of my ApplicationDatabase! So i check with the following SQL in my ApplicationDatabase:
IS_MEMBER('db_owner')
and it returns me 1, meaning yy is db_owner. I then quickly login as sa and double check on the security|login|yy|properties|User Mapping, NONE of the database is mapped! and i also ensure "Guest account enabled for: ApplicationDatabase" is unchecked.
What could be the problem i am facing? the purpose i create yy is to ONLY allow it to have connect permission on my SQL Endpoint. Please HELP!!

All the logins with sysadmin role are locked out in one of the SQL server. Also in that instance Logon trigger is implemented which allows only certain users with Windows Authentication to logon.
This server is converted into single user mode by using command prompt. Now we are attempting to connect to SQLServer using command sqlcmd -S FTCPU3239 (since we do not have any other login) and create a new login with sysadmin role but are refused due to logon trigger. it says Login failed for login 'DomainNameUserName' due to trigger execution.

I have a server that has 20 databases . I have tested with few users with different level of access and all of them were able to connect to the server and also see, select, update , delete from a particular database which is kind of weird because they do not have a user login associated or mapped to that database. I checked and no user is part of any group in AD that would give them permission to connect . I need a query that would find the permission path of a user. I already queried with xp_logininfo but I am not getting any thing.

I receive this error message occasionally in my ETL - usually when trying to pull data from our source system:
An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Login timeout expired". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unable to complete login process due to delay in login response". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "TCP Provider: Timeout error [258]. ".
There is a setting in the connections manager, under the ALL tab, Initialization, Connect Timeout. It is set to zero, which would be the default. It appears (by looking at the timestamps in my error log) that the default is 15 seconds. If I change this to a higher value (60 seconds or so) should this fix the error?
Thanks,

Steps I have taken so far:
droped the user from server2 and recreated it
gave the user sysadmin rights on server 2 and server1

Hello.
I'm using Visual Web Developer, .NET Framework 2.0, ASP.NET 20., IIS 5.1. on Windows XP Pro SP2.
I have assigned every possible user i can think of full permissions to the web folder, all of the subfolders, and the database files. This includes Administrator, Administrator Groups, ASPNET user, IUSR_Machine, Interner guest account, Network Group, Network Service Group, Power Users Group, Users.
I'm logged on as administrator.
When i run the web service from within VWD, i get this error.
Cannot open database "eBayTrader" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'DHJC2R91ASPNET'.
Does anybody know how to resolve this problem ?
I have been working on it for days. I will gladly pay someone to work this out with me over the phone/email. I'll send you a check before we start.
Thanks,

I have created a new database within SQLServer Express 2005 and have an ASP page in IIS. Any time i attempt to access the database I get the following error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "testDB" requested by the login. The login failed.
The ODBC connection that I have created works fine if connecting to the same table (literally three sample fields with two records) in an Access database.
The database connection that I am using is:
Set DatabaseConnection = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
DatabaseConnection.Open "DSN=testDB;UID=EINSTEINAdministrator&pwd=password;DATABASE=testDB;APP=ASP Script"
Set rs = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.recordset")
SQLString = "SELECT * FROM testTable"
rs.Open SQLString, DatabaseConnection
if NOT rs.EOF then
Response.Write(rs("testField1") & " - " & rs("testField2"))
end if
rs.Close
DatabaseConnection.Close
Set DatabaseConnection = Nothing
EINSTEIN is the name of the server, rs = Recordset. I have tried changing to just Administrator instead of machinenameAdministrator with no success. I have got SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP, and can log in fine to SQL Server using EINSTEINAdministrator.
Please can anyone help!
