Transferring AS400 DB To SQL Server 7.0

Aug 27, 1999

I have been asked to make it possible for our SQL 7 server to pull infromation from AS/400 and utilize it in web applications, and such. Is there any way of doing this? I have heard that you can export the data on the as400 to a DB2 file, and import it with SQL. Is this the only way of access info off of the 400?

How Can I Update Linked Server (AS400 DB)?

May 16, 2000

Hi!

Please

I got the following Error Message when trying to update a AS400 Database
"(Table Name) on (Data Source) not valid for operation"

My question is? Does Sql Server require journaling the files? How Should I change this option?. Please Help!

I did try to fix the above error, but then I got a new message:

OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' supplied inconsistent metadata. The object '(user generated expression)' was missing expected column 'Bmk1000'.
Could you help me?

I will appreciate your help.

Transferring Data From AS400 To SQL Server

Jul 31, 2007

Hi all,
I am working at insurance company that using AS400 as it main server. All transaction data is already kept for about 10 years (or even more..). This data is growing larger from time to time, and after several upgrades (that cost a lot!), my supervisor has an idea to partly move the data from AS400 to SQL Server. (since the cost for upgrading sql server is cheaper than AS400).

So.. let say, we only want to kept data in AS400 from 4 years before until now (2004 – 2007), and the rest of data is kept in SQL Server.

So first, all transaction data from 1997 – 2003 is transferred to SQL and deleted in AS400.
If user queried data and didn’t found the data in AS400, it will search the SQL, if data is found in SQL, then data is transferred back to AS400 and deleted in SQL.

I’m using SQL Server 2000 DTS (use HiT OLEDB) to transfer the data from AS400 to SQL and vice versa.

I wanna ask if anyone has done this before? What’s the difficulties by using this approach? (btw, I will implement the DTS using user control in vb.net)

Or anyone has a better solution to overcome this problem?

Thanks,
[RU]

Setting Up Linked Server To IBM AS400

Mar 18, 2004

I am trying to set up a linked server in MSSQL to an IBM AS400 using the IBM AS400 OLE DB Provider. The New Linked Server dialog box asks for properties Product Name and Data Source. I would like to know from someone who has successfully set up a linked server to an AS400 what the specific syntax in the properties needs to be. I have reviewed the OLB section on sp_addlinkedserver, and while this is helpful and gives many specific examples, I need an example for an AS400. Thank you to anyone who can help!

About Convert Issue From AS400 To SQL Server 2005

Mar 10, 2008

Hi all,
I have a issue need your great help. Would you please help to check it and tell mw how to fix this issue? Thanks.

*****All of softwares are English version****
Server:
WIndows Server 2003 SP2 + SQL Server 2005 SP2
AS400:
V5R4

Client :
Winsows XP SP2 + SQL Server 2005 SP2
Client Access V5R4 Full Version.
*****All of softwares are English version****

Issue:
I have a file in the AS400 with Chinese characters and need to dowload to SQL Sever 2005 daily.
In the SQL Server, I created a database and table which collection is "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS", and I modified one of field which collection is from "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" to "Chinese_Taiwan_Stroke_CS_AS" (( the filed data type is "nvarchar" and the length is 42).
That mean that field can display the Chinese characters correctly.

In the SSIS,
1.Craeted a OLE DB Source to get the data ( The field name is "CUST_CHINESE_NAME" and the length is 42) from AS400
2.Craete a Data Conversion to convert that field from "String" to "Unicode String[DT_WSTR]" (The new field name is "Copy of CUST_CHINESE_NAME")
3.Create a Data Conversion 1 to convert that field from "Unicode String[DT_WSTR]" to "String[DT_STR]" and code page is change to "950"(The new field name is "Copy of Copy of CUST_CHINESE_NAME")
4. Creatd a OLE DB Destination to get that convert data and input the SQL Server ( the filed data type is "nvarchar" and the length is 42).

When I execute that SSIS, I got the error message in the third step.
****************************************************************************************************************************
[Data Conversion 1 [521]] Error: Data conversion failed while converting column "Copy of CUST_CHINESE_NAME" (487) to column "Copy of Copy of CUST_CHINESE_NAME" (544). Moving A SQL Server 2005 Database From The Local Network To An Online Server.

Mar 7, 2006

Hi All, first post.

I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.

Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)

It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.

The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.

This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.

Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.

So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?

Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.

One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Mark

FTP From AS400

Jul 7, 2006

I have been handed the directive that I am to ftp flat files from our AS400 to the SQL server where the web interfaces will read the data.

I need to know if anyone out here knows how to automate the FTP download from the AS400 system.

I don't know any UNIX and even if I did the SQL box is also running a 3rd party shipping label system that disallows the use/installation of MSK Toolkit.

I thought I could use the FTP Task in the DTS package but I don't know what to put for the internet location and this is certainly not a Mapped path.

Moving A DTS To Another Server

Dec 28, 2003

Hi I'm very new to this but what I'm looking to do should'nt be too difficult although I've tried to no avail.

I'm looking to deploy a web site that uses SQL2000 to another server. Im trying to find out how to move the database to that server. Ideally I would like to be able to save it to CD for safety but its not like old access where you save the mdb file. I need to save the whole 'DTS' package, is that what its called? stored procedures, triggers the lot.

I tried the wizards but just got in a mess.

Moving DB To A New Server

Jul 23, 2004

Hi -

At my work, we have a SQL Server 2K DB on a server. This server is being replaced and the DB needs to be copied from the old server to the new server and I've been asked to perform this task. What I was planning on doing was:

1. Making a copy of the database on the current server

2. Taking the .BAK file created and coping it to the new server via a mapped drive

3. Restoring the database from the .BAK file on the new server

The only concern is moving the .BAK file across the network due to size.

Is this the best method to do this or is there a more preferred way? By doing this, what potential issues could be encountered?

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
