Obscure Error While Attempting To Install SQL Server 2005 SP1
May 15, 2006
I successfully installed SQL Server 2005 SP1 on one PC. When I attempt to install it on a second PC, however, I get the following obscure error:
Unexpected Error Occurred
The following unexpected error occurred:
That's right, there's nothing else listed, other an OK button. D'oh! When I press the OK button, the following error report dialog box appears:
Hotfix.exe
A recently applied update, NULL, failed to install.
There are no pending updates that I'm aware of, as I just booted the PC. I sent the error report.
I notice on this particular PC that the SP1 install EXE is expanding/writing to an external SCSI drive; would that make a difference? I don't see a way to specify a different (i.e., internal ATA drive).
I'm trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (x86) on my laptop when a setup failure message would show up at the end. When I clicked for more details it has the followings:
Product Version 9.00.3042.00 Message Source setup.rll Message ID 50000 EvtType sharedsetupsharedsetupactions.cpp
And later when I tried to uninstall it from Add/Remove Program the screen would simply flash when I click but nothing happens.
Please let me know what do I need to install the piece correctly, thanks!
I've got 2 SQL servers in a test environment - one is 2000 and the other is MSDE and they are seperate machines. I have added the MSDE server as a linked server to my 2000 box by issuing the following command:
I can query the database using an openquery in a select statement like so:
select * from openquery([192.168.1.108], 'select * from remote_test.dbo.products')
but when I try a direct query like the following:
select * from [192.168.1.108].remote_test.dbo.products
I get the following error:
An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Processing of results from SQL Server failed because of an invalid multipart name "192.168.1.108.remote_test.dbo.products", the current limit of "4" is insufficient.
I can't seem to figure out anything about this error. Anyone have any ideas?
Does anyone have any insight to this error: "Duplicate column name resolution could not be done because the ordinal specified a column of a different name"
I googled it and got one result with no resolution. I get this error from SQL Server when a task in my dts package fails. My dts package is attempting to update records whose fields have changed based on a specified criteria.
I'm currently receiving the following error message whilst attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit): Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Installing performance counters. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified.
This server already has an install of SQL Server 2000 as the default instance. I'm attempting to install a new named instance of SQL Server 2005.

You can ignore this and it will complete the installation, but subsequently trying to patch with SP2 will fail on the same sections - Hotfix.exe crashes whilst attempting to patch Database Services, Integration Services and Client Components (3 separate crashes).
I've removed SQL Server 2005 elements and tried to re-install, but it's not improved the situation.
I have managed to get the Forms Authentication sample to work bu there is a hitch. I am running Report Server and Report Manager on the same(test) PC. I can logon to the Report Server without a problem but when I try logon from the UILogon.aspx page for Report Manager I receive the following error:
An error occurred while attempting to get the ReportServer Url. The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA) An error occurred while attempting to get the ReportServer Url. The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)An error occured while attempting to get the ReportServer Url. The RPC server is unavailable.(Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA).
I can register users which suggests that the page can connect to the database.
I downloaded VisualBasic 2005 Express Edition recently, and the installation went flawlessly, but when I tried to download the optional component SQL server express, the installation failed. When two subsequent installations failed, I decided I'd get along without it, until such time as I discovered I *needed* it. Well, I'm here, and the installation is still failing. I've tried both installing it though the VBstudio setup, and downloading it separately, but both fail at roughly the same point. The error from the standalone installation is more descriptive:

The link leads to an apology - they have no information on this subject. Of the help files, the troubleshooting page contains nothing (noticeably) relevant, and the log files have nothing obvious either, at least as far as I could tell... but then, I have no idea, which is why I'm here
I am using the xp_cmdshell to run a batch file that is trying to open the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
When I run the batch file in the command prompt, it opens perfectly.
When I run it in SQL with xp_cmdshell, it returns the contents fine, and I notice it tries to open Acrobat, but it is under the username "system". And I cannot get it to load in a visible area, and for some reason it doesnt seem to load properly under system.
I've opened port 1433 in the Config Manager (error: The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion.)
My Shared Memory Protocol is enabled, I've confirmed that the Server is allowed in Windows Firewall, I've configured the SQL Server to allow remote connections, I've started the SQL Browser with success....
I also receive the error message that (The MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS service on .... started and then stopped (Object Explorer)).
I uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server Express 2012 and get the following failures:
Database Engine Services SQL Server Replication
I think this the the core of my issue. how to remedy this?
I'm unable to use SSIS packages after installing SQL Server 2005. Specifically when I first loaded a new Integration Services project in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio the default SSIS package could not load, I get Package.dtsx in my tabbed document view but in the body of this window is a error message: "Microsoft Visual Studio is unable to load this document. QI for IEnumVARIANT failed on the unmanaged server."
If I try to use the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard shortly after the window to select your data source I get a pop-up error message:
This wizard will close because it encountered the following error:

I'm getting the below error after installing SQL server with new instant name in exsiting SQL server 2000. Could you provide me workaround if you have faced same kind of issue?. Erorr: Application popup: DTSRun.exe - Unable To Locate Component : This application has failed to start because SqlResourceLoader.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Hi, I am trying to install the sql 2005, the install goes through like it supposed to, when i click "Finish" it goes off with a message box : " there was an unexpected failiure during the setup wizard. I am running on Win XP pro sp2. COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME??? must install sql server!! THANX!! Uri.
I'm working through the SQL2005 Reporting Services Tutorial. When I try to deploy, I get the error "Connection could not be made to the report server." It appears that I do not have permissions to get to localhost/reportserver (I get a permissions error when just trying to get there directly from "run"). In another forum I saw several people having the same issue. One contributor said that the problem was solved for him by uninstalling SQL2005 and reinstalling using the local system account rather than a windows domain account. I tried that, but am getting the same error. Anyone know how to fix this?
I'm trying to install SQL 2005 Server onto a Windows XP Professional SP2 workstation. Whenever the splash.hta program is run an error with a header of "Internet Explorer Script Error" comes up where the error is "Dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed". It asks if I want to continue running scrips on this page and no matter what I click, it will open up the menu screen. I then click on server components to install and get the same error just on a different file and it will not continue past that. These script errors do not occur on another workstation.
I downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Evaluation setup .exe. When I wen to install it by clicking "SQLEVAL.EXE", I received an eror stating "There is not enough space on Drive C: to extract this package.
I have over 50 gig of available spac eon my C drive. What gives?
When I downloaded the .exe, I had the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect enabled. Could that have caused it? Also, 2 days ago, I installed MS-Accounting 2007. Could that have caused a problem?
I have seen this error posted on the SS2005 forums and the standard response is to look at the installation logs. I have no logs. The extraction never completed.
I have installed Feb 2006 CTP Vista Build 5308,but when i install SQL Server 2005,it crashed.
Error Message:
sql server setup could not connect to the database service for server confiurgration. The error was[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider:No process is on the other end of pipe.
And the start menu/All Programe didn't not appear "Microsoft SQL Server".
We currently have a production server (prodserver) and backup server (backupserver) in the same domain, and I am attempting to backup dbs from the production box on to the backup box using the following:
backup database db to disk = '\backupservere$ackupdb.bak' with init
when executing from SSMS, I receive the following error:
Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device '\backupservere$ackupdb.bak' Operating system error 1326 (Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password)
Here's where the issue lies for me:
Both the production and backup box are running services under the same domain accounts, let's call it "domainsqlagent"
domainsqlagent has domain admin rights on backupserver and prodserver
I can login to both the production and backup servers using the domain account, map drives, hit administrative shares, drag and drop files, etc between the servers
If I use xp_cmdshell to try and simply move a file between prodserver and backupserver, I receive the above error as well. However, if I open an cmd window and execute the move command from DOS, it will successfully move.
There is a development server on the domain as well (devserver) using domainsqlagent to run the service accounts, and I can successfully backup databases from dev to prod, dev to backup, backup to dev, backup to prod, prod to dev, but NOT prod to backup Finally, if I create a maintenance plan in SSMS, I cannot create a connection to the backup server (error reads the connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection)
The backup server was changed to a different domain (domain2) before I arrived here, but has been switched back now, rebooted, service accounts changed via Configuration Manager, services restarted (and rebooted again for good measure). Does SSMS use a different security context to create the connections to remote servers? From all my tests, the domainsqlagent account has all the correct rights and is working OK. Could this be a network issue? The network admin and I have been banging our heads against a wall for the past couple of days, so if anyone has seen something like this, I'd appreciate any help.
I am trying to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 but it was throwing an unexpected error when trying to install "setup support files".

Hi, I've just tried to install SQL Server 2005 Standard and I'm getting an error that I can't find any information on. In the log, I find Error 29503. A message after it indicates that it couldn't start the server.
When I tried to SQL Server 2005 (Standard) to two-node Windows 2003 servers, the Remote Setup task on the 2nd node hang. Here is the SQL Setup log. Please help figure out the cause of the problem. Thanks in advance.

The subject pretty much sums the problem up. I am trying to get a database installed on Server 2008 RC0. The public information says SQL 2005 SP2 should work, but I cannot get the base SQL 2005 installed in order to apply the service pack. When I run the installation, I immediately get an error when trying to install the pre-requisites. Specifically, the .NET 2.0 Framework errors with code 87, "invalid parameter".
I have found a couple references to this error code, but nothing to do with Server 2008 and RC0. I have tried using a directory with no spaces, and tried the EXE vs ISO installation, but they everything fails. I don't know if there is a way to bypass the .NET 2.0 Framework install - since it's already on the machine anyway.
I have encountered an error (as shown below) when attempting to install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition 9.00.1399.06 on on my XP SP2 pc.
the file: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSummary.txt"
show the following messages:
Machine : DUMBO Product : SQL Server Database Services Error : The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
and ...
Machine : DUMBO Product : Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Product Version : 9.00.1399.06 Install : Failed Log File : C:ProgrammiMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0015_DELL8400_SQL.log Last Action : InstallFinalize Error String : The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually." The error is (17058) . Error Number : 29503
Also, the file: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0001_CBXP_Core.log"
show this message:

Maybe that's not a fatal error, but the SQLExpress service does not get installed.
I need help! When installing SQL Server 2005 Express on one machine, I get an error with the following summary.txt Machine : xxx Product: MSXML 6.0 Parser Product version: 6,10,1129,0 Installed: Failed. Log file: c:Program Files... (see below) Error Number: 1625
in log file from above. MainEngineThread is returning 1625 This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.
The person trying to install has administration privileges. BTW: The computer shares a wireless internet connection with other computers in the office but the clients or not setup to share data. My user is installing SQL, the data, and app on a single client. The MS Sql Server 2005 express seems to install on all other boxes. Thanks for your time.
I've noticed at least five other posts on the web with this problem with no solutions given. Seems there are MANY people with this particular problem--hint:Microsoft Pay Attention. Help!
When installing SP2 for SQL Server 2005 I get this error message:
MSI (s) (E0!68) [09:02:25:673]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29512. SQL Server Setup was unable add user OUR-LAN-DOMAINOUR-SERVICE-ACCOUNT to local group OUR-LAN-DOMAINSQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$OUR-DATABASE-SERVER-NAME$MSSQLSERVER.
The error message seems to contradict itself: it says "local group" which seems to me to mean the group on the database server itself YET the group name is prefixed with our LAN domain name. So which one is it?
Also, I'm not sure if this message means there is a problem in Active Directory or in the security model of SQL Server itself. I don't think it means SQL Server itself because I don't think SQL Server has groups... it only has Roles, right?
We looked in Active Directory and the user above does indeed exist in the domain-level group mentioned.
I am installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and received error 29521. I am installing with an account that has administrator rights. The summary.txt file contains: Error String : SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was {Microsoft}{SQL Native Client}{SQL Server}CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information. Error Number : 29521
I am out of brain cells. I can not figure out how to upgrade instances of sql express to sql 2005 or even add an instance of sql 2005. I have installed/upgraded everything else (SSMS, etc.) to SQL 2005. I am dazed and confused. I don't even know where to start in explaining what I have tried and done. I have 303 log files going back to 3/27/2007 from various attempts. Where do I start in figuring this debacle out???
I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.
Here is the Summary log, for what it's worth:

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(
Log Location: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGHotfixSQL9_Hotfix_KB921896_sqlrun_sql.msp.log MSP Error: 29537 SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot find the object 'dm_exec_query_resource_semaphores', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
I tried to search internet, however, I couldn't get solution.
My SQL server 2005 is standard version, OS Windows server 2003 sp2, I am using Administrator account to install it.
I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005. After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports. Regards,
I have never installed sql server before and I didnt know if I just take the sql server 2005 standard edition media and boot off it and do a fresh install that way or do I have to install Windows server
I am getting the error 'Incorrect syntax near the keyword set' with the following code snippet -
declare @dteTo Date set @dteTo = CONVERT(date, GETDATE())
My intention is to set the variable @dteTo to the current date (no time component). If I run a SELECT CONVERT(date, GETDATE()) command I do get what I want, it is just assigning the value to the variable that isn't working as intended.
