I have a varchar field that contains answers to questions separated by commas. Say there are 4 questions for each user. Here is an example of what the table would look like: User Answer 1 Good,Fair,Good,Bad 2 Bad,Good,Good,Good 3 Fair,Good,Bad,Fair

I have to parse a sentence into separate words. This has to be done in a Stored Proc.
If the sentence is: "The sun is rising". Then I want to store the words "The" "sun" "is" "rising" into 4 separate variables. (The separator is a space).
Has someone already written something like this before? I do not want to re-invent the wheel.
I wanted to make a .NET wrapper class that parses a database for a given stored procedure, and finds the name and type of each of it's parameters.
to do so, i need to do the following:
normally, you have a stored procedure and you know its parameters and their types (i.e. int, varchar, etc), based on that, you hard code a call for this storedprocedure on your backend code.
I want to make a wrapper class that goes and finds out what the parameters for an existing stored procedure are, and based on them, create a GUI that allows people to fill them. after people fill this Form out, and click submit, i generate the proper procedure call.
this would basically allow me to create a single class that i can just call to create a form for any given storedprocedure...

Hi, I am trying to cast the parameter returned from the stored procedure to an int32 type. But it is giving me an error message as " Input string is not in the correct format " my code is int valid = Int32.Parse(command.Parameters["@Valid"].Value.ToString()); the @Valid parameter is an output parameter and is declared as int in the stored procedure.... the command is a DbCommand object does anyone have an idea why this error is happening. Basically I have two strings. Both strings will contain similar data because the 2nd string is the first string after an update of the first string takes place. I want to know that how can i write a stored procedure that takes an input param, i.e., a string and returns the count of the matching words between the input parameter and the value of a column in a table. e.g. I have a table Person with a column address. now my stored procedure matches and counts the number of words that are common between the address of the person and the input param string. When calling this sp from my app (VS2005) it works fine for most passwords. However it fails if the password contains a plus sign e.g. tXke4572Wd+IbRmjmcGexw==
If I use a View to test this password then the password is split up as 'tXke4572Wd' + 'IbRmjmcGexw==' I assume that SQL server does the splitting but correct me if I'm wrong.
How can I get this sp to work with passwords containing plus signs (or any other characters).

I have a problem that I'm not sure how to handle. In the application I am working on I will be importing fixed length strings from a CD into the database. Each specific character in the string represents some value.
I can't decide if I should just create a single field of 895 characters or create 895 single character fields. When I need data from the database I won't need all 895 characters of information, I'll only need one or a small subset of values.
Does it really matter which approach I take?

SQL 2000 gives the max as per alphabetical order and in the above example the MAX is john/b
IS there any direct SQL statement to get the MAX name where MAX refers to the LONGEST in terms of length .
I have been able to do it with 2 sql statements where i first find the longest length and then give a query where i match the length..But is there any simpler way??
How bad is normalizing the database to the 3rd form, which requires that all fields depend on nothing but primary key. Consider the first table you create -- users. They have int primary keys, which duplicate the real primary keys -- user names. When user logs in, the user's entry is uniquely identified by its name, which is not primary key. The fundamental design rule -- avoid redundancy -- is violated. A VERY serious reason should be there for that.
Usually, design is compromised by redundancy for performance. Here, both copies are stored in one remote database, but integer keys may be located/used faster. Additionally, using long string references everywhere instead of short integer keys may save a lot of storage space (additionally increasing speed). How serious these impacts are? Am I missing something?
Usually, login names are not allowed to change. You have problems changing primary keys because all the foreign keys must be updated accordingly. Does it reveal that most user databases use character strings as primary keys?
I have a stored procedure with a input parameter ( xml block).
sp: spGetAddr @xmlText
the style of parameter @xmlText looks like
<Param RestricBy="UserName IN ('Mayá', 'Bob')"/>
If I use non-basic ASCII character, just like 'á' in the parameter, the execution fails and I get 'The error description is 'An invalid character was found in text content.''
But this kind of special characters should be allowed in the name column of the database table.
If I use the htlm code 'á" to replace 'á' in the parameter, then the execution of the stored procedure is fine. but how can I change all of the possible sepcial characters?

it's like this, i have a temporary table such as create table temp_table (str varchar(50)) and i have a data table create table data_table (str varchar(20))
now i import my data(in which there is some corrupted lines) into the temporary table, they should be all ansi-character strings and no more than 20 characters, but now some wrong datas in which there are wide-characters are mixed in. as the result of these wide-characters, the corrupted strings each takes over 20 bytes, but i can't filter them out, as when i enter in "len(str)", the sql server returns character counts, instead of byte counts, i thought this should only happen when i was using a unicode date type!(e.g. nvarchar). but now the server also behaves like this on those ansi date types. it seems all string manipulating functions refering string length behaves like this.
so when i am trying to run: insert into data_table select str from temp_table where len(str) <= 20 or insert into data_table select left(str,20) from temp_table
it will always end up with a string truncating error String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated
So now my problem is how to get the count of byte, but character, of a string containing wide-characters?

All are of a similar starting format
For easier maintenance and to take away the need to change all of them if the methodology changes I want to split out shared code.
What I want to do is to take out the part that populates the @ID1 table into a separate stored proc which will be called from the report procs. The values from the shared proc will then be parsed back to the reporting proc.
I thought about using a function but I don't think it will be flexible enough as in certain cases I want to parse 2 or more IDs back into the final output.
I also don't want to make the code too complex so that it is relatively easy to read

The first question I have is: can i do it with a table variable when going between procs or do i need to build a real table if i want it to maintain the logic in 1 place.
May be worth bearing in mind that the end user who will be executing the proc will only have read + execute stored proc access permissions so dropping, updating or creating real tables is not an option. #Temp tables are possible but since am using table variables throughout would prefer to stick with them.
I'm new to SSRS (We are using SQL 2014) and have been asked to create a report from SharePoint list data. One of the columns in my list contains XML data. I need to pull three different fields from this XML. I see lots on using xml as a datasource but I'm using a SharePoint list as my datasource. Before I get too far down the wrong road I thought I'd ask here if there was a built in means of parsing XML or if I should look at using the Text Function under Common Functions in the Epression builder?

I'm keeping in the database a log of all the sessions for myapplication. Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created' returns an int value as 1 (performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created') but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie: exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1' which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc): SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID) This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example). My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert). Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?
i don't know how i will explain you guys, but is there any way to compair the text of two procedures/functions. the thing comes in my mind is to compair the text no any spaces or [enter]. So can any one help or idea.
