Performance Problems With SQL2K SP4 On Win2K3 SP2

Jan 7, 2008

Hello All and Happy New Year (I believe that is still allowed by the PC police?!)

Has anyone experienced performance problems (i.e. processes taking a lot longer to connect to the database server) after appyling Windows Server 2003 SP2 to a server that was previously running Windows Server 2003 RTM? The version of SQL Server (2000 SP4) has not changed between OS Service Packs.

To set the scene, we upgraded one node of a cluster to Win2K3 SP2 intending to upgrade the other node the following night if no problems were encountered. However, after failing over to the patched node we experienced something akin to a Denial Of Service attack whereby connections were gradually refused until even existing connections were kicked out.

We resolved that issue by disabling the SynAttackProtect Registry key (details http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899599), but although connections are no longer being refused they are taking a lot longer, e.g. opening a Query Analyzer window now takes several seconds to connect to the database. The actual time taken by the database engine to execute sql queries has not increased, but is perceived by the users as having done so because of the time taken to return results.

I asked our server team to run diagnostics against both nodes and they found no problems and no differences apart from the OS service pack level.

I am about to reopen the case I logged with Microsoft, but thought I'd see if you guys had experienced anything similar.

Thanks and regards
Lempster

SQL2K WIN2K3 CONNECTION SECURITY

Jul 23, 2005

Microsoft Security Paradigmes are Irritating. I sure they're fine onceyou know what they are, but for the uninitiated it's quitecounterintuitive to work with.I moving an old SQL Server-backend-IIS5/ASP-frontend application toservers with windows 2003 standard edition. One server will run thedatabase the other will run IIS 6.0. Note that i haven't set-up adomain, which i think requires one machine to be domain controllerwhich would decrease performance and stuff. I've simply put them on thesame group.I wan't to restrict access the sql server so only the incommingconnection from the webserver is allowed. I can use either namedpipes(which should be the fastest protocol) or tcpwhich should beslight slower than named pipes) but i seem to have a problem. If I usenamed pipes to connect the IUSR(the user under which IIS is running)must have access-rights to IPC$ share on the sql server. I can't seemto set any access-right directly for IPC$ share, but i can reactivatemy guest user and then it works, everyone can now access the ipc$ shareso it's not really what i'm looking for.I can also connect through TCP( and set up some kind of filter onlyallowing incomming connections on port 1433 from the ip of the webserver. But i don't know how to do this. I've taken a look at the IPSec stuffbut it's all about kerberos authentication and other bull which i don'tthink i need. What i need is simply a ip traffick filter, which doesnothing else but reject incomming connection from all other ip's thanmy webserver. My question is how do I do this? Do i need to have a addtitíon"firewall" service running and if so why, how much extra overhead willthis create for the server. Alternately, is it possible to change theaccess right for the IPC$ share manually? Thanks in advance for any input you might have on this?Regs Jens

SQL 2000 SP4 On Win2K3 Cluster

Feb 20, 2008

Hey there I am an SQL noob, our bank has no real SQL Admin, we had onw that left but never had a good knowledge transfer. We have 2 SQL servers clustered. IBSQL1 and IBSQL2 they make up cluster IBSQL. We have 2 other servers IBIIS1 ans IBIIS2 and we noticed when installing apps on them that they could not see the database. Yet it can ping IBSQL. The problem is on IBSQL1 and 2 port 1433 is not listening or open. Thus on IBSQL it isn't either of course. I have read of all kinds of people having this issue and most have said you need to manually add a connection string "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=machineName,1433;Initial Catalog=xx;User ID=xx;Password=xx" Problem is I do not know how to add a connection string.

I need step by step instructions since im new to this. Start/programs/etc..... Apparently it is not enough to open the properties of tcp/ip in the config util and say 1433. You need to reenforce it by adding that string.

As it stands I cannot "telnet ibsql 1433" it tells me to take a hike basically.

So is the connection string the likely cause? or could it be something simpler? Thanks in advance.

Win2k3 R2 EE + SQL2k5 EE And 16GB RAM

Mar 27, 2008

For a SQL/2005 DB Server do I need the /3GB switch or not? I will have IIS running on the server; however, it won't be doing very much as the SQL Database is the main thing:

Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise w/16 GIG RAM 4 CPU (Virtual Machine)
SQL/2005 Enterprise Edition

Hardware: Dell Server 8 CPU w/32 GIG RAM running VM ESX V3

I know I need the /PAE switch to utilize Memory over 4 GB - the question is do I need the /3GB switch along with the /PAE switch?

MSDE And SQL2000 On Win2k3

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,I have MSDE installed on an HP server as some of the utilities requireda database. I have also subsequently installed SQL 2000 onto thisserver which is a windows 2003 box. I know it complains at the startof the installation but I was under the impression that it would stillwork ok, especially with SP3 applied.I have tried to apply SP3 but it tells me that it is not a SQL2000instance ad setup will exit? Also I have noticed that in the directory structure it has used thedollar sign i.e. mssql$machinename its the same in Enterprise Manager\machinename$InstanceName. Whats that all about? Its not like that onany other server! My plan is to uninstall sql 2k, uninstall HP apps and MSDE andreinstall SQL 2k. Can anyone explain the above though?ThanksGary

SQL 2000 On Win2k3 Enterprise?

Aug 30, 2006

I am attempting to install MS SQL 2000 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 box. The only installer I can find on the disc is in the MSDE directory and when I run it it immediately gives me this error:

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I have tried copying the install files to my local hard drive for install, I have checked the version of my Windows Installer (3.1.4000.1840). I have the SP4 updates ready to go once it's installed, but I just cannot get past that point. I know that the same software version has been installed on other Windows 2003 systems, so why would it have a problem on this one machine?

Thanks

Impact Of Capicom.dll In WIN2K3 OS Upgrade

May 13, 2008

Hi,

I am currently working on with the ASP encryption of my application. I've tried to test the encryption of the connection string using the capicom.dll in my local, and it works successfully. However, I am not quite sure if this will still work after my OS is upgraded to WIN2K3 (my current OS is WINXP). Will this dll component be impacted after the OS Upgrade? or will there be no impact at all?

Any inputs from you guys would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Timeout In SQL2k

Jun 23, 2001

I moved my DB from SQL7.0/NT to SQL2k/WIN2k.
Everything was fine from the last few months but suddenly I start getting timeout errors.
I checked and rebuild all the indexes - there are no deadlocking at all - everything looks quite normal to me - I am all lost now as what to monitor and where to see for this timeout error messages.
Anyone has any idea as what is going on what should I check to see if that's the cause.
I also ran Profiler but there too nothing too long as to timeout.
My sql box is attached to IIS box and pager is set on IIS box.
The problem is not with IIS box cuz when I shift the applications to another SQL box everything runs fine and there is no timeout messages.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Restoring SQL2K% To SQL 2K - Possible?

Jan 23, 2007

I have been sent a backup file from a supplier that I have been trying to restore. I have succesfully installed it on my SQL2K5 instance, however, we need to put it on our SQL Server in our DMZ . . . Which is running SQL2K . . . Supplier was informed of this and says that you can restore to a SQL2K DB as long as you use SQL Management Studio . . . Tried that and got an error message Saying That Restore Headeronly is terminating - Too many backup devices specified. . . only 64 are allowed. . . .Supplier suggests that its a SP4 issue . . . Installed SP4 and tried again . . . Got the Same Error again (SQL Server Error :3205)

Am I out of my gourd I am sure that restoring a SQL2K5 Backup to a SQL2K instance is not possible?

I should say that I am Running SQLExpress as my 2K5 Instance and MSDE as my 2K instance . . . Before I invest more time on this and trying it on a development server running Standard edition.

Thanks All

SQL2K Login Issue

Aug 31, 2004

hi,

i'm hoping somone can shed some light on why this isn't working. basically i have a webform which that passes data back to a database (SQL Server 2000) and uses Windows authentication to perform the UPDATE, INSERT, whatever.

i've defined a role within the database, specifically for the application. for my tests, i've added a global security group from my Windows domain to the logins on the SQL instance. this group has been added to the custom role in the application database.

since i'm a member of this global security group, i was under the impression that my credentials would pass through and everything would be ok, however, it's not recognizing my login - or others in the group as well.

the application web (in IIS5.0) has been set to Windows Authentication, and i've flagged the impersonate=true attribute in the app's web.config file.

lastly, my connection string for the sqlconnection object grabs my user name (or the current user for that matter) in the format of DOMAINaccount. for the sake of argument, i was able to successfully connect using a custom SQL login that was assigned to the custom role.

the error that's returned specifically states that the "Login failed for DOMAINaccount"

any thoughts on what's up here? i guess i'm not understanding SQL Server security to well. thanks in advance.

Restrict Access To DB On SQL2K

Nov 12, 2001

Hi,

Is there a way to prevent new users from accessing a SQL2000 db (like to put it into DBO mode) while leaving current users finish their running jobs.

I tried Alter Database and sp_dboptions and both in SQL2000 requires to close all current users. It was working in SQL7 but not in 2000.

Thanks

SQL2K Bind Failed

Jun 11, 2004

I tried to install SQL Server 2K on a W2K server running IIS and SSL. The SQL installation failed until I deleted the certs from my system. Now, the SQL logs say "SuperSocket Info: Bind failed on TCP port 1433". I have tried everything on the MS KB, TechNet, and MSDN sites that I could find. I have also uninstalled IIS and Certificate Services from the server. Since there are no certs left, I suspect that SQL Server is getting in it's own way on startup. Does anyone know of a way to trap/log this kind of conflict?

SQL2K: Deadlock On Lock

Sep 10, 2007

Hello,

I have scheduled a job using Job Agent in SQL2K (Management). Every once in a while i get an error when i view job history:

Executed as user: xxx. Transaction (Process ID 53) was deadlocked on lock | communication buffer resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. [SQLSTATE 40001] (Error 1205). The step failed.

The process ID changes for every error. Sometimes its 51, 56, or 54 as well.

I have checked several times, but there is no other process that runs at that time. I even rescheduled it for a different time, but even then it fails about once every week or two.

How can i check what is the other procedure it is deadlocking with, if it is? OR what exactly is the problem, if it is not with any other process?

Any help and/or guidance is much appreciated.

Thanks,

J

EM Won't Connect Locally On SQL2k Box

Jan 24, 2002

Here is a strange one. Have a sql2k box that I upgraded from 6.5 back. Conversion went fine, everything was ok with the sql install. Created and scheduled maintenance jobs while logged on to the box. A few days after the conversion, Enterprise Manager cannot register the server(error message is 'Data source name not found and connection libraries do not exist'). This inablilty to register the server only occurs when working on the server itself. You can register the server while connecting from another box with EM.

So, do some checking and find that the box itself does not recognize SQLSRV32.dll (etc) as even existing on the box BUT IT DOES EXIST in the normal places, it was a working install just a few days prior. As far as the box is concerned, the network libraries do not exist. Therefore, cannot register the server locally, cannot create a Data Source using the SQLSRV32 driver, cannot start the Sql Server Agent(so no scheduled back ups, etc).

Went so far as to re install the connectivity and client tools, which did not fix the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

High Usage Of RAM On SQL2k

Hi

I have an sql server with very high usage. The web which is connected to the sql server has approx. 1000 unique visitors every time.
The database is optimized and the site goes really fast now.

But a problem we've had since the beginning is that SQL Server constantly uses 1.8 GB of RAM. Never less, never more.

Do you have any idea on how to decrease the usage of RAM. I am sure that this high usage is necessary.
