Suppose there is a SQL Server table with a trigger behind it.
Suppose a client VB (or VBA) program is trying to update a certain record in that table, say record #1, by issuing the update statement:
RS.update
My Question:
When is SQL Server starting to lock that record (record #1) ?
Right after the RS.update is issued OR after the trigger has been executed ?

I am getting the following error while trying to update a SQL Server 7.0 table thru' MS Access('97 version). It was working fine until now. This problem started happening after re-linking the table to MS Access as new columns have been added on the SQL Server table. We tried re-starting the MS Access,re-linking the table again,giving all the permissions to the user on the table etc. Also, no other user is accessing the table at the same time..Any help?
Error message in MS Access:
This record has been changed by another user since you started editing it. If you save the record, you will overwrite the changes the other user made.
Copying the changes to the clipboard will let you look at the values the other user entered, and then paste your changes back in if you decide to make changes.

hi all iam working on a ticketing application i want to avoid two users to book the same ticket the requirement is as follows
1. the system should show all the available tickets which is not yet booked
2.when two users book the ticket at the same time time it should not allow the two persons to update at the same tme
the main aim is to avoid data concurency

Please help! I have a VB application used by multiple users. MS SQL 2000 backend.
When a user opens a record for editing, it want to mark the record as locked so that if other users try to open this record, it will not be available.
Currently, I'm using a programmatic method that basically sets a field 'lock" to 1 if the record is in use and 0 if not in use. But this has the side affact of locking the record if the user reboots their workstation. In addition, I don't believe that this is the best method and approach to achieve my goal.

i will tell my requirement. i have a tran. window there i will select a chart number of a patient and do some changes and will go to next window for doing some other modification for the same patient, and again will go to other window. by this time don't allow other users to access the same patient chart number. should get a message like record locked by some other user.

i have an app that insert multiple rows into a table in sql using insert statments. i use a begin trans and commit trans.
here is the setup i have a table that contains 100 rows. i insert another 25 rows. in another app i try to edit a record in that table (a record from the first block of 100) i can't edit the record because my first app has not done its commit trans yet. i don't understand why i can't edit a record that was already in the table. i'm not trying to edit one of my newly inserted records.

I run a query "BEGIN select * from NT_ins_params_S WITH (HOLDLOCK,ROWLOCK) where...... and load the result into an ADO object. I need to lock the row untill I am done processing and I thought that (HOLDLOCK,ROWLOCK) will do the job but it does not. What is the correct way for locking?

I have a Sql Express Database that I want to access from a remote tablet application. When the remote user accesses a record (which is a form + ink), I can't have anyone else accessing that record and drawing ink on the record's form, unitl the first user is done. How do I prevent access to that record in a user friendly way until the remote user is done and has updated his changes to the database?

Hello,I am trying to begin a transaction is ASP.NET that acts as a temporary lock on a record so that another web user can not gain access to that row of information. My problem is that when I begin the transaction, if the user then closes out of the browser completely, the temporary lock that is put on my table from the transaction does not go away. Further, I have no idea if it will or if there is a time range you can specifiy to do so.What I am wondering is if anyone has ever tried this before, or does anyone have a definite answer to the following question, "If I begin a transaction, and then I do NOT rollback or committ that transaction, will it ever rollback on its own and if so where can I set this time frame?"Thanks in advance for any help.

We are facing an acute situation in our web-application. Technology is ASP.NEt/VB.NET, SQL Server 2000.
Consider a scenario in which User 1 is clicking on a button which calls a SQL stored procedure. This procedure selects Group A of records of Database Page1.
At the same time if User 2 also clicks the same button which calls same SQL stored procedure. This procedure selects Group B of records of Database Page1.
So, its the same Page1 but different sets of records. At this moment, both the calls have shared locked on the Page1 inside the procedure.
Now, in call 1, inside the procedure after selecting Group A of records, the next statement is and update to those records. As soon as update statement executes, SQL Server throws a deadlock exception as follows :
Transaction (Process ID 78) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction
We are able to understand why its happening. Its because, Group A and Group B of records are on the same Page1. But both the users have shared lock on the Page1. So, no one gets the exclusive lock in records for update, even though, the records are different.
How can I resolve this issue? How can I get lock on wanted rows instead of entire page?

I have set of 2 DTS packages, one of which calls the other by forming a command-line (dtexec) using a Execute Process task.
From the parent package-> Execute Process Task->
dtsexec /F etc... /<pkg variable> = "servername"
Each of the parent and the called package have a variable: "User::DWServerSQLInstance" which is mapped to the SQL server connection manager server name property using an expression. The outer package has the above variable and so does the inner called package (which gets assigned through the command line from the outerpackage call to inner)
I "sometimes" get the following error:

I have seen a few other people have this error.
Package works fine when run from BIDS, DTExec, dtexecui. When I schedule it, It get these random errors. (See below)
The main culprit is a variable called "RecordsetFileDIR" which is set using an expression. (@[User::_ROOT] + "RecordSets\")
A number of other variables use this as part of their expression and as they all fail, pretty much everything dies.
I have installed SP1 (Not Beta) on server. Package uses config files to set the value of _ROOT.
The error does not always seem to be with this particular variable though. Always a variable that uses an expression but errors are random. Also, It will run 3 out of 10 times without a problem. I am the only person on the server at the time.
Any ideas?

I want to lock a table so others cannot lock it but able to read it inside transactions.
The coding I need is something like this: set implicit_transactions on begin transaction select * from table1 with (tablock, holdlock) update table2 set field1 = 'test' commit transaction commit transaction
I have tried the coding above, it won't prevent others from locking table1.
So, I changed the tablock to tablockx to prevent others from locking table1. But this will also prevent others from reading table1. So, how can I lock table1 so others cannot lock it but still able to read it?

I am trying to get started setting up a development server on Windows 2000. These are the componants I have installed so far:
- IIS 5
- MSDE Database Server
- .NET Framework 1.1
- MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Componants)
- ASP.NET Web Matrix
I have also downloaded a quickstart example, TimeTracker, to learn from.
Here is my problem: When I try to install TimeTracker, it does not detect a database connection. Also, when I try to connect to a database in Web Matrix, it says I need to have client tools installed. What are these and how to I get them?
Is there anyone that can give me a hand with this? Is it a matter of running the MSDE service? If so, how do you do this?
My apologies for not being more knowledgable, but thanks for helping me get started.

I just installed SQL server 2005 with SP2 on Vista business.
When I open Management Studio, and try to Register a new server, I get this message:
Cannot connect to MyServer.
Additional information:
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could nor open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1231)
When I open SQL Server 2005 Surface Area configuration and click on Add New Administrator, there are no Available privileges. Not sure if this is relevant.
Don't know what to do, any help will be appreciated.
I have just installed SQL Server at home. Had a bit of experience at work, but at home I have to get started from scratch.
Enterprise manager says 'Connection could not be established'. In this error it talkes about 'registration properties'. I am (by default ?) a member of SQL Server group, but I have no sub items, like databases. And how do I get to where I can edit stored procedures ?
As you can see I'm quite a novice, but with a little nudge I can would a lot out myself. But not all. If you can help me now, I'll be back soon.

i have roughly 10-15 access databases that i am trying to run through sql server express, i installed this thing thinking it would would "just work minus a little configuration", what a misconception.
so do tell, what do i need to do. i have sql server express running, it is configured to allow remote connections. i know the path's of these access databases. how do i attach them. i saw something about the command line interface but im not interested in that because of the number of databases i will need to manage, not to mention trying to add an additional one 6 months down the road and i will be lost all over again. i thought about downloading SQL Server Management Studio thinking it would be a "gui side" to the CLI version. while it was downloading, it said i need XX program, i go to that page, it says i need XX and XX first, it is turning into a pyramid scheme to install a billion programs.
so point blank, i want to share some access databases to my local lan, i have sql server express installed and running. what do i need to finish this out. the simplest and smallest footprint solution is needed.
all this because the program im using cant do remote databases. ugh.

Today I would like to start the long process of learning VB with .net applications. I thought I could start with Office developer xp to learn VB. I have that package.
I also would like to be able to build SQL quaries and integrations or automate and manipulate data exports and imports later down the road.
Example: Export various order and customer information from a shopping cart and import it in to Quickbooks or MS Accounting.
First off I need to be able to build web sites and I know I want to grow into VB and SQL.
What should I do?

Start with Office xp developer Tutorials?
Start with VB Express?
Buy a book?
Can someone tell me where to start and when to move to the next language?
What is the best resource to get to it, without the bla bla bla and a commnd/syntax refference?

Currently we have an applicaiton running on SQL Server 2000 and have SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services installed. However, I have VB Express and Web Development Express 2005.
How do I get started here? What versions "work" with what? Do I need to either upgrade the DB to SQL 2005 or find VB.net 2003, or can I use what I have to get started?

i own about a dozen interactive forums (see example at http://ConcealedCarryForum.com for one of them) that i host on a windows 2000 server dedicated server out of my home on a commercial cable backbone. the forums are ASP using Access DBs. we have outgrown the capabilities of Access and are getting complaints from DB lag during peak usage, and i must upgrade my DB to ensure the QOS end users get from my forums. i have no intention of switching over to php/MySQL/linux formats.
i tried unsuccessfully to get MySQL to play nicely in a windows environment, and recently learned that MSSQL offers free versions, the compact and the express. trouble is, i know absolutely nothing about DB management. Access is idiot proof so i have used it as long as i could. now i find myself in a scramble to learn how to create, employ, and use a more powerful DB.
for my intended usage (running about a dozen DBs on a dedicated server), will compact or express be the appropriate version to start learning? for my intended usage, is there any benefit to downloading/installing/learning the additional tools that are also available? if so, which tools? where do i learn how to create new DBs, and what tools do i need to do this? most tech papers ive seen on MSSQL assume a prior working knowledge of MSSQL DB management and im coming into this completely ignorant but willing to dedicate myself to learning.

Hi folks... this is part complaint, part request for help. I have an Access db that I'd rather were an sql db. Partly to learn sql and partly because all of the asp.net examples use sql and don't seem to work with access.
I installed VS2005 which includes sqlexpress, but there's no front end to it.. there's no way to "talk to" this sql2005. Can't seem to create tables, etc.
So, I installed SQL 2005 Development server... still no front end. Just some config tools that I presume I may care about some day but don't mean anything to me just yet.
I'm on XP Pro so can't install SQL 2005 Enterprise, but I discover a CTP called Management Studio Express. Well, we all know how robust CTPs are, nevertheless I install it and boy is it friendly.
At this point I feel as though I've missed The Big Thing that had I not missed I would be a lot further along.
Maybe the best way to express my question is to ask for what the heck I should have done in order to be learning sql at this point instead of having run out of time again.

While I have been programming .Net for four years and T-SQL for about 12, I am a newbie to the whole SQL CLR thing. I have VS.NET 2003 on my machine, and I installed the client tools for SQL 2005 which also installs VS 2005 for SQL. Yet when I open VS 2005, it only has Data Analysis projects, but no Database projects. If I go into VS 2003 and try to import some of the assemblies I have found by googling 'SQL CLR' - VS 2003 won't let me add them.
Exactly what do I need to install so that I can get started? Do I need an instance of SQL server running on my machine? (I currently do not have a server running, only the client tools are installed)
