How to find last login date/time for user DML acitivity on databases on Instance?
Is there any way we can find our the last login date/time for databases?
Note: 1. We can find if the SQL Trace is running and store.This is not good solution
        2. Audit logins off/on is also not good solution.
       3. Using DMV's also not good option, if reboot sql server instance then historical values can not see.
Ok, please pardon my complete ignorance; but I am extremely SQL challenged. I manage the server right now and I am the closest thing to a DBA at the moment with this server.
Here is the problem. I have a job that runs every hour and until last week it was running without any problems. Now, once a day it hangs, and I end up having to restart sql to get it to be functional again. I guess I could just kill the spid, but regardless, it's fails.
It doesn't happen at the same time each day. I thought it was from the backups doing a SQL backup job, but I eliminated that possibility. I can't find what is causing the problem, because the SQL logs just stop at the time that this happens. It's like some other job/query is running and taking all the sql server resources. But I can never catch it when it's happening and I have no event logs or SQL logs to go on.
Is there any query that I can run to find what happened around the specific time the job failed to run? I just need to find what process did what when this job stopped working.
Again, I apologize if my lack of SQL knowledge is making me ask dumb questions, but I am really lost.
SQL Server 2012: Out of all the databases in the instance we have a requirement in which we need to maintain a high availability for the databases around (128). Our team believed log shipping will apt for this requirement but not sure on it's limitations, how many databases are allowed or supports this log shipping from a single instance.
I'm looking for a way of taking a query which returns a set of date time fields (probable maximum of 20 rows) and looping through each value to see if it exists in a separate table.
E.g.
Query 1
Select ID, Person, ProposedEvent, DayField, TimeField from MyOptions where person = 'me'
Table
Select Person, ExistingEvent, DayField, TimeField from MyTimetable where person ='me'
Loop through Query 1 and if it finds ANY matching Dayfield AND Timefield in Query/Table 2, return the ProposedEvent (just as a message, the loop could stop there), if no match a message saying all is fine can proceed to process form blah blah.
I'm essentially wanting somebody to select a bunch of events in a form, query 1 then finds all the days and times those events happen and check that none of them exist in the MyTimetable table.
Is there anyway that I can find out the time an instance went offline? Does the last entry in the error logs show this? One on my instances went down during the night and I need to know the time this happened if possible.

I work for a ISV producing HR applications.
When user starts the applications the program shows all databases that the user have access to. This is done by select all names from master..sysdatabases and then trying to "USE dbname" to see if user have access,. Users doesn't have sa rights.
This procedure takes approximately 90 secs for a server with 500 databases and that has become a problem.
Does anyone know off a faster method, any suggestions?

Hi folks, i've an instance with many userdatabases. i want to use SP_HELPUSER to output all database users and roles defined to em. how come i do this through a script to view permissions in all databases. I couldn't use (USE database ) in a loop.
Our system administrator set up an NT server group in order to allowour users to login to our application via https to our sql server.The group appears as a User in SQL Server when you look at it inEnterprise Manager. That said, I can not see the users associatedwith the group from Enterprise Manager, but know they can login to thedatabase.The problem is this. When we login via the web we get access to thedatabase without problem, but when you look at the current_user whatyou see is the login Name the user entered and NOT the name of thegroup/User. That is to say, I can see a UserID which is not listed asa User in SQL Server and can't see the name of the group, which islisted as a user in SQL Server.I need to know who's logging in order to direct them to theappropriate web page via their role. Before the admin set up thegroup, I was using sp_helpuser to get the role, but then again I hadthe userID to do this.The question I have now, is there any way to see what thegroup/user is who logged in i.e. the goup listed as the User inEnterprise Manager? Earlier one of my team member has created a user login and password but forgot the password after few days and now we need to know the password of that login. Some of the application are using this login so we can delete and create a new login with the same name hence is there any possibility or script to find out the password of the existing login.

Deleting a Login from a server instance and adding it back did not show that the login was still mapped to databases. In SQL Server 2008, adding a Windows Login did not permit access to end user databases until the Windows Login was mapped to various databases. Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order. I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem. I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista. If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine. I am taking a guess it's somerthing to do with access issues, but can't find anything out on searching the forums etc.. I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine. Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt. Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.
Is the Date/Time of the latest SQL Server 2005 instance restart stored somewhere in the system catalog? This value is quite relevant when retrieving information on the costliest unused indexes in the instance.
I know of one way of doing this, which is to search the SQL Logs for this info. This solution is very unwieldy - we recycle the logs daily and we only keep the logs of the last 7 days.
I need to get a website up and running for a small group of people. I've had SQL Server for a while, but didn't have any use for it. It came with Visual Studio 2005, which gave me a little know how on scripting. Now, I have Visual Web Developer and what I need to make a web page. I just need to know how to configure all my settings to allow my website to be viewed online by anyone with an internet connection. I'm a person that understands detailed or simple directions, but I can not seem to find directions online. Now, I know what your thinking, but I've never attemped anything like this before. So, please, HELP! I need and want to learn as much as possible.

As a starter i tried to modify and translate the Personal Website Starters kit from the VS2005Team SDK.
When i'm working on the machine were it's installed , under debugging, all works great.
But when i try to develop from my laptop, via RDP on the develop machine, i've got this message and can not debug (connect to the SQLxpres Server)

I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.
Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:
in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."
If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:
"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.
I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?

I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?
I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.
My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.
No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum. €œFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€? I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again. I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it. SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients. What is causing this? This is some information on the system I am using:

I am now to programming but nor computer illiterate. I have been working with MS SQL servers since version 6.5 and have MCSE, Network+, A+ and Security plus certifications. Installing and using VS should not be this problematic. What is wrong with Microsoft?
i have a table of phonecall records detailing amongst other things the time and duration of the call. there is a relationship linking this table to a table of handsets and from there to a table of users. this users table lists the start date the user had the phone. as ever sample data might make this easier to show:

essentially i am trying to link the phonecalls to the user of the phone at the time of the call. i make the following assumptions regarding the data:
the user is responsible for all calls for a given handset from the 'startdate' until the next 'startdate' for a different user, if such a record exists, if not then for all calls after that date
I have an identical SQL database on two machines (my machine and a webserver) that links to a database on a third server (S3). When I executea stored procedure on my machine that accesses a database on S3, italways runs without a problem. However, when I run the same storedprocedure on the webserver (via Query Analyzer on my machine, connectedto the webserver), the stored procedure runs without a problem forabout ten minutes, and then I suddenly receive the error "Login failedfor user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Serverconnection.". If I then connect remotely to the webserver via RemoteDesktop Connection and run the stored procedure there it works, andthen I can run it again on the webserver via Query Analyzer on mymachine, but the same problem will occur again after about ten minutes.The only difference between my machine and the webserver is that thewebserver is running Windows Server 2003, whereas my machine runsWindows XP. We have 3 replica AG setup. 2 replicas are in sync/automatic failover, the other(DR Server, different subnet) in asynchronous/manual mode…All these replicas were on sql server 2012, Recently we upgraded DR server to 2014. Since then we have a problem, the AG databases in 2014 instance went into ‘Synchronizing/ in recovery’ state…The SQL server error log has message, the recovery couldn’t start for the database ‘XYZ’…We tried to create a new database and add it to AG , it works for fine for other two 2012 replicas, but on 2014 we see the same issue
I'm writing a view to check record counts in a table that has numerous datasets and therefore various "Activity Dates". Is it possible as part of the SQL statement to have a CASE statement for example so that it can identify the field to use as the activity date?
The field to use is being identified using a seperate table so at the moment I have CASE WHEN FieldToUse = '2' THEN MapCol ELSE '[Activity_Date]' END, where FieldToUse = '2' identifies the date field to use and the MapCol data is the field name to be used as the activity date.
