Right Code Statements Of SqlConnection && ConnectionString For Connecting A Database In Database Explorer Of VB 2005 Express?

Feb 14, 2008

Hi all,

In the VB 2005 Express, I can get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString of a Database "shcDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) by the following set of code:
///--CallshcSpAdoNetVB2005.vb--////

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form1

Public Sub InsertNewFriend()

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

Try

connection.Open()

Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
.......................................
etc.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If the Database "shcDB" and the Stored Procedure "sp_inertNewRecord" are in the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express, I plan to use "Data Source=local" in the following code statements to get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString:
.........................
........................

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=local;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

Try

connection.Open()

Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
........................
etc.

Is the "Data Source=local" statement right for this case? If not, what is the right code statement for my case?

Please help and advise.

Thanks,
Scott Chang

How Can I Return A Database From The DataBase Explorer Of VB 2005 Express To The Object Explorer Of SQL Server Management Studio

Mar 3, 2008

Hi all,

I just realized recently that a database "XYZ" in the Object Explorer of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is put in the Database Explorer of my VB 2005 Express for processing a Stored Procedure in executing the SELECT statements (not by using Input and/or Output Parameters) during the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming, then the content of the database "XYZ" is not in the SSMSE. How can I return the database "XYZ" from the DataBase Explorer of VB 2005 Express back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) safely? Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,

2005 Database Will Be Shown In Management Sudio Express Or App_Data/Database Explorer?

Feb 13, 2008

I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express sample databases from 2 books, ASPnet 2.0 and ADOnet 2.0. The ASPNETDB.MDF was shown in App_Data and Database Explorer, but not in the SQL Server Management Studio Express. The AdoStepBy Step database created by a ConfigDB.exe was displayed in the Management Studio, but not in the App_Data, or Database Explorer.

Is this the way SQL Server 2005 runs the 2005 databases for SQL Server 2005 Express only? Or also in SQL Server 2005?

TIA,

Hi all,

I downloaded and ran AdventureWorks.msi into my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) one year ago.But I did not know how to attach it to my SSMSE then. Last week, I deleted it from the "Add or Remove" of Control Panel and I downloaded the new AdventureWork.msi and installed it my SSMSE. Today, I tried to use the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express for the first Stored Procedure programming. I clicked on AdventureWorks.mdf and I got the following error: One or more files do not match the primary of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupt and should be restored from a backup. Log file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorks_Data_log.ldf' does not match the primary file. Java App Connecting To SQL Server 2005 Express Database

Oct 4, 2006

Hey All,

I am having a problem connecting to a database I have with a java app I am creating for my senior project. I am using the latest MS JDBC for connecting to the SQL Server.

Below is the code I am trying to run:

try {
ds.setIntegratedSecurity(true);
ds.setServerName("localhost\SQLEXPRESS");
ds.setDatabaseName("*databasename*");

con =ds.getConnection();
} catch (Exception ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
}

The ds and con variables are declared and initialized correctly. The error I am getting now is this:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "*databasename*" requested by the login. The login failed.

Any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong?

Connecting SQL Server Express 2005 To A Microsoft Access 97 Database

I want to use SQL Server to query an Access Database with about 40,000 rows of data. If possible, I don't want to upsize the database because others need acess to it in the ACC97 format. Is there a way to use ODBC to connect to the ACC97 database so that I can use the SQL query capability of SQL server to query the database.

I know access allows you to write some SQL queries but I need the power of the SQL server and now it is a matter of curiosity because I've been searching for this answer for about 8 hours.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Problems With Connecting To The ASPNET Database After Installing SQL Server Express

Nov 2, 2007

I am having problems connecting to the database. I am trying to use Membership API and for some reason it will no longer connect to the database. I previously had Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and it worked just fine, until I tried to install MS SQL Express. I have tried the aspnet_regsql and sqlcmd InstallCommon.sql and both times I received a named pipe error. I look at the configuration and it said named pipes enabled.

I eventually gave up after trying for two days and removed MS SQL Express, but now I am still getting the same error. I tried to uninstall all of the SQL editions and reinstall the MSDE that comes with VS 2005, but I am getting the same error.

When checking the ASP.NET Web Application and testing the provider I receive the following error:
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.

The security tab gives you the following error:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.

Running the sqlcmd in the command prompt I receive the following error:
Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup.

I just Visual Studio to work correctly again.

Thanks,
R

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio - Opening SQL-File From Explorer Does Not Connect Automaticly To Server/database

Apr 25, 2008

hello,

I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.

In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection.

Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer).

Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up.

Any ideas?

thanks &
best regards,

SQL Server 2000 To SQL Server 2005 - Any Changes Required To Existing Code, System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection?

Dec 13, 2007

My web project (ASP.NET 2.0 / C#) runs against sql server 2000 and uses the System.Data.SqlClient.using System.Data.SqlClient;
I use System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection and System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand to make the connections to the database and do selects and updates. Is it correct to continue to use these against SQL Server 2005? I ask because I made a connection string (outside of .Net) for SqlServer 2005 using the SQL native provider and it had the following - Provider=SQLNCLI.1 and any connection strings I had made (also outside of ASP.NET) fro SQL Server all used Provider=SQLOLEDB.1. This is why I wondered if there is a different SqlClient in .Net 2.0 for SQL Server 2005?

Sql Server 2005 Express: Can't See [DatabaseMail] Node In Manamgent Studio's Object Explorer

Dec 10, 2007

I use Windows Vista Home Premium

Here's my Help About Info: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.6000.16546
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.1433
Operating System 6.0.6000

I opened up the Surface Area Configuration Tool and chose the "Surface Area Configuration for Features". Choose "Database Mail" and clicked the checkbox "Enable Database Mail Stored Procedures"

When I go into the Management Studio, I can't see the "Database Mail" node under "Management"
I'm thinking I might need a service pack as in the about, I don't see a service pack listed. BUT, when I go to the SQL Server 2005 Express "Service Pack 2" page, there's no option to just download the Service Pack. I recently downloaded (2 weeks ago or so) this Sql Server Express Edition and I'm thinking this might have Service Pack 2 already, but I'm not sure as I don't see it in the "about".

What should I do?

Connectionstring Error For ODBC Database

Jan 11, 2008

Hi Everyone,

First of all I don't know whether this is the right place to put my query............please guide me the right link if this is not......

I am using Sybase Server in my .net project.............

and using this connectionstring...

Driver={INTERSOLV 3.11 32-BIT Sybase};Srvr=MySybase;db=MyDatabase;Uid=admin;Pwd=admin

I can make odbc connection (in .net code) using this connectionstring.............. and fetch the data also....

But somehow I don't know why... it gives the wrong result for my stored procedure.....

stored procedure is quite big and has many statements.......... after some digging I found that it gives the correct result if we use Server Explorer like Sql server, DBArtesian etc.. (not possible to copy it here, but it gives wrong result in date calculation)

But in Visual Studio Server Explorer when I make new connection and select "Microsoft OLEDB Provider for the odbc" and put the above connection string...it gives the correct result for the tables but wrong result for the stored procedure...

I feel that there is some problem with Provider....
I am not passing any provider here so it takes MSDASQL.1...

My question is What should be my connection string here..........????

and what's provider does actually???

Thanks in Adavance......
