SQL 2012 :: Data Size Of Table Is Not Reduced Even After Deleting Millions Of Rows

Sep 21, 2015

I have deleted nearly 30 million rows from a table. But however when I used the sp_spaceused command to calculate the data occupied by the table I don't see any difference in the data size of the table. In fact the data has increased to few MBs after the deletion, but not much.

SQL 2012 :: Deleting Large Batches Of Rows - Optimum Batch Size?

Oct 16, 2015

In another forum post, a poster was deleting large numbers of rows from a table in batches of 50,000.

In the bad old days ('80s - '90s), I used to have to delete rows in batches of 500, then 1000, then 5000, due to the size of the transaction rollback segments (yes - Oracle).

I always found that increasing the number of deleted rows in a single statement/transaction improved overall process speed - up to some magic point, at which some overhead in the system began slowing the deletes down, so that deleting a single batch of 10,000 rows took more than twice as much time as deleting two batches of 5,000 rows each.

good rule-of-thumb numbers (or even better, some actual statistics and/or explanations) as to how many records should be deleted in a single transaction/statement for optimum speed? 50,000 - 100,000 - 1,000,000 or unlimited? Are there significant differences between 2008, 2012, 2014?

SQL Server 2012 :: Update Statement Will Not Update Data Beyond 7 Million Plus Rows Out Of 38 Millions Rows

Dec 12, 2014

I run the following statement and it will not update beyond 7 million plus rows and I have about 38 million to complete. I keep checking updated row counts and after 1/2 day it's still the same so I know something is wrong because it was rolling through no problem when I initiated it. I need to complete ASAP so it's adding to my frustration. The 'Acct_Num_CH' field is an encrypted field (fyi).

Reduce Table Size Without Deleting Data

Jul 20, 2006

We are using SQL Server 2000 Standard ed, sp4 on Server 2000 Advanced. We have one table that is three times as large as the rest of the database. Most of the data is static after approximately 3-6 months, but we arerequired to keep it for 8 years. I would like to archive this table (A), butthere are complications.1. the only way to access the data is through the application (they areimages produced by the application-built on Power-Builder)2. there are multiple tables refrencing this table and vise-versa3. we restore the entire db to two other servers for testing and trainingregularly4. there might be more complications that have not been thought ofCurrently, our only plan is to setup a seperate server with a copy of this dbon it and the application. Leave only the tables necessary to access the data, and if this 'archive' works, remove from production the data from the table Aand all references to the table A from rows on the other tables.I mentioned #3 because someone mentioned a third party tool that may be ableto pull the data from the table, archive it elsewhere, and at the same time, place a 'pointer' in the table to the new storage location. The tool theymentioned only works on Oracle and we have not explored beyond that yet.I am ready to explore ideas and suggestions; I am still new to the DBA world,I am out of ideas.Thank you!--Message posted via SQLMonster.comhttp://www.sqlmonster.com/Uwe/Forum...eneral/200607/1

SQL Server 2012 :: Strategy To Delete / Move Millions Of Rows In A Database?

Apr 16, 2015

I am using SQL Server 2012 SE.I am trying to delete rows from a couple of tables (GetPersonValue has 250 million rows and I am trying to delete 50Million rows and GetPerson has 35 Million rows and I am trying to delete 20 million rows). These tables are in TX replication. The plan is to delete data older than 400 days old.

I tried to move data to new tables from the last 400 days and it took me like 11 hours. If I delete data in chunks of 500000 then its taking a long time to rebuild indexes(delete plus rebuild indexes 13 hours). Since I am using standard edition partition wont work.

find ddl below:

GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[GetPerson](
[GetPersonId] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,
[LinedActivityPersonId] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,
[CTName] [nvarchar](100) NULL,
[SNum] [nvarchar](50) NULL,
[PHPrimary] [nvarchar](50) NULL,

Data Warehousing :: Use New Table With Reduced Structure?

Aug 24, 2015

I have a large fact table spread across tens of partitions (appx. 1TB each). I found that the business does not need much of the columns in the table. So, as an optimization action, I decided to get rid of these un-needed columns. What is the efficient way to achieve this? Can I simply drop these columns from the table, or use a new table with the reduced structure?

SQL Server 2008 :: Deleting Data (rows) From Table To Reclaim Space?

Feb 11, 2015

I have a table 300+GB. it holds 10 years of Data. I need to delete 5 years of data and put it to another server so I can have more space.

If I delete 5 years of data, Transaction log gets so huge and size of the database even gets bigger because of the .ldf file which even gets bigger! I think I can shrink the log file and the data file. Is this the best way to do it?

Is It Possible For A Table To Increase Size When Deleting Records?

May 24, 2007

No transaction log involved, only the table itself.

Use sp_spaceused "table_name" to check the space used.

It seems the table size actually increased from the beginning to the middle of deletion, at the end of deletion, its size decreased.

Recovery mode set to be simple, autoshrink turned on.

The tables tested are about 50MB ~ several GB in size, all have the same behavior. The size increased about 5%~10%.

Since the deletion is called from another software, I want to know if it is possible for SQL Server to have this behavior or it is absolutely the 3rd party software's issue

Thanks!

Need Help Deleting Rows In A Table

Feb 1, 2007

I need to delete some specific rows in Table1

int1 must have the value 1
int2 must have the value 1
int3 must have the value 0
and now we get to the difficult part - first character in the field [Cost No] have to be different from the letter 'B'. [Cost No] have the datatype varchar(20)

I expected the code to look something like this:
DELETE Table1
FROM Table 1
WHERE ([Int1] = 1) AND ([Int2] = 1) AND ([Int3] = 0) AND ((LEFT([Cost No]), 1) <> 'B')

But I get this error message:
The left function requires 2 arguments

What am I doing wrong and what should the right code look like?

SQL 2012 :: Accurate Sorting Data Each Time With Millions Of Records Without Time Field?

/****** Object: Table [dbo].[Testing] Script Date: 4/25/2014 11:08:18 AM ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

[Code] ....

It seems to work fine with one million records.

Each primary key is unique, but the begindate is non-unique, and i guess even if i use datetime2 and add nanoseconds, from what i have read, there is a chance that i could have a duplicate datetime since the date is imported via XML from multiple sources.

Deleting Table Rows And Optimization

Dec 10, 2001

i have 6 read only tables that every night all the data gets dumped and a new updated copy of the data is copied over. the tables range from 500,000 rows to almost 4 million. i have indexes set up on the fields i use to query against. my questions are
1.since i dump all the data every night and replace it, do i need to rebuild the indexes every night or is that done after the data is reentered?
2.i want to use a fill factor on the table since it is read only, but will dumping the data every night and reinputting it have adverse affects with a fill factor?
3.should i be shrinking the database or defragging it everynight cause of my data dumps and reloads?

thanks in advance

Deleting Thousands Of Rows In A Table

Apr 10, 2003

How can I quickly delete thousands of rows in a table (SQL2000) according a query and without blowing up the log file? For instance executing the query:
Delete from transactions
WHERE transactiondatestamp < DATEADD (m,-4,GETDATE())

increases my log file to almost 6GB before job was done an normal size was re-obtained. In addition it took a long to time to get the job done.
With the command truncate table I cannot use query unfortunately but this would be faster.

Anyone has an idea?

Deleting Duplicate Rows In SQL Table

Nov 16, 2007

I have an SQL tables [Keys] that has various rows such as:
[ID] [Name] [Path] [Customer]

2 Key2 Key2 External
3 Key1 Key1 InHouse
4 Key1 Key1 InHouse
5 Key1 Key1 InHouse

Obviously IDs 1,3,4,5 are all exactly the same and I would like to be left with only:
[ID] [Name] [Path] [Customer]
1 Key1 Key1 InHouse
2 Key2 Key2 External

I cannot create a new table/database or change the unique identifier (which is currently ID) either. I simply need an SQL script I can run to clean out the duplicates (I know how they got there and the issue has been fixed but the Database is still currently invalid due to all these duplicate entires).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Deleting Duplicate Rows Within A Single Table

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to how to delete duplicate rows from a table. I have been doing this:

SELECT * INTO TempUsersNoRepeats

UNION
SELECT * FROM TempUsers3

This way I end up with a total of four tables (the fourth table being the original Users table) and I was hoping that there was a way that I could do this all within the the original Users table and not have to create the three TempUsers tables.

10 Millions Rows - 45 Minutes??

Feb 21, 2008

Hi everyone - I have an ETL package which loads about 10 million rows from SQL 2005 staging tables to new, empty tables (no indexes or constraints) in another SQL 2005 DB to be SWITCHED into the main partioned data tables.

Both databases reside on the same SQL Server instance - it is a dev server so the disk aren't super fast/SAN speeds but it has plenty of RAM/CPU & SCSI disks.

The insert takes about 45 minutes - can I get this working any faster?? or is this typical for 10 million rows?? I've messed about withe the data flow a few times but I can't seem to get any significant improvements.

Any tips anyone??

I perform several lookups on dimensions - these are not cached.

I do query the source table concurrently with different WHERE clauses & run two pipelines processing the data into 2 destination tables.

Would it be better to query the base table once & use a conditional split instead of the two separate queries??

I also mulicast from each pipeline & use a UNION ALL to log some of the rows from each pipeline to anther destination table.

Hope this makes sense?? Any ideas or tips on how I can speed up this kinda transform would be appeciated..

I'm using oleDB connections.

Hope ths makes some kinda sense!! Thanks for any advice!!

Any suggestions?
