SQL 2012 :: Deadlock XDL File Remains Empty Even During Deadlocks

Mar 13, 2015

In order to troubleshoot some deadlocking that I am seeing on SQL Server, I am trying to capture the Deadlock XML by enabling the Events Extraction Settings option 'Save Deadlock XML events separately' and specifying a Deadlock XML results file.

Meanwhile, I am also tracing the Deadlock graph, Lock:Deadlock, and Lock:Deadlock Chain events. Yet the xdl file remains empty even though I am getting hits on the events themselves in the SQL Profiler trace.

Also, I have the following trace flag settings enabled.

TraceFlagStatusGlobalSession
1204110
1222110

Why the xdl file remains empty even though (I think) it should contain some XML for deadlocks that are actually happening?

SQL 2012 :: Deadlock Information And File Path

I have enabled 1222 and 1204 trace and restarted sql server. then i have replicated deadlock in my local.

This is the error came in sql

Msg 1205, Level 13, State 45, Line 1

Transaction (Process ID 51) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.

Then i opened ERRORLOG file , there is no information about deadlocks .

Where can found deadlock information and file path. is there any extra options required to enable trace?

SQL 2012 :: DBCC Shrinkfile Empty File Not Distributing Data Evenly In Primary File Group With Multiple Files

Apr 29, 2014

Why shrinkfile empty file does not redistribute data evenly in the primary file group with multiple files:

Please run the script attached to see what the end result is.

This is what I set up last night on my test machine.

1) Create database [FGTest] size 200MB
2) Create table called TEST on primary
3) Insert 40MB of data into test
4) Create another file group called temp in primary size 200MB
5) Shrinkfile('FGTest',emptyfile) so that all data is transfered from FGTest into temp file group.
6) Add another 2 files called DATA2 and DATA3. Both are 200MB.
7) We now have 3 empty files that I want data distributed evenly on. FGTest, DATA2 & DATA3
8) Shrinkfile('temp',emptyfile) to move all the data from temp over the 3 file groups evenly

I would expect at this stage to have the following:

FGTest = 13MB,
DATA2 = 13MB,
DATA3 = 13MB

(40MB of data over 3 files should be about 13 MBish in each file)

What I actually end up with is this:

FGTest = 20MB
DATA1 = 10MB
DATA2 = 10MB

It looks as though SQL Server is allocating 50% of all data to the original file and then 50% evenly over
the remaining files in PRIMARY.

SQL Job Stopped But Underlying File Remains 'IN USE'

Jul 23, 2007

I have an SQL Job whose sole step is to run an SSIS Package via the File System mode. The .dtsx file itself is located on the server where SQL resides.

The SSIS task looks inside a specific directory and if a qualifying file exists, archives the file, unzips the file, rename the contents and, eventually, processess the files.

Invariably, if i Stop the Job before it has completed successfully, i notice that the underlying file (in this case, a .zip file) remains 'in use'. If i try and move the file or rename the file, the OS says "no can do; the file is in use".

but no matter where i look on the network when I go to Manage (right-clicking on My Computer), i cannot fine any reference under Shared Folders | Open Files to "close" the file.

can anyone shed some light on this? ie, how to close, etc.

thx very much.

SQL 2012 :: Deadlocks - Not Showing In Profiler

Feb 24, 2015

We have some Deadlock alerts set up in SQL Agent that email us when the performance counter for deadlocks goes above zero. I've used the following script to identify the event file which has deadlock information in there.

select CAST(target_data as xml) as TargetData
from sys.dm_xe_session_targets st
join sys.dm_xe_sessions s on s.address = st.event_session_address
where name = 'system_health'

Now that is fine, and we're looking into that (number of deadlocks appear to be 0.5) but out of interest ran a SQL Profiler session to capture the details as well and nothing is showing, I've received a few alerts and the trace file has information in there - but profiler shows absolutely nothing (all deadlock events are captured)

SQL 2012 :: Deadlocks In Partitioned Tables?

Oct 31, 2015

We are using partitions and all the table are properly aligned as per the partition keys. When this particular sp, which is inserting data to a table from a different table based on the partitionkeys is called by Web UI where threading has been applied, dead lock appears.

Let me make it more clear.

ThreadOne:
Insert into table A(partitionKey,BatchId,...)
select * from table B where partitionkey = 1
ThreadTwo:
Insert into table A(partitionKey,BatchId,...)
select * from table B where partitionkey = 2

I can see sometimes it gives deadlock for this procedure, not sure about the reason, as far as I guess since the tables are partitioned and escalation is set to Auto the deadlock should not occur.

Flat File Connector Stops Processing File On Empty Row And Generates Fatal Error

Dec 27, 2007

Here's a really annoying problem. Let's say you have a text file with 2 million rows.Delimiters all look good and rows are previewed well but the file has a missing row at say lin 1234567 - way deep in the file. When SSIS encounters the blank row, an error is raised and processing on the file STOPS! I verified this in by checking the SSIS log and have even developed an error routine to notify me via email when the error occurs (really cool if I do say so myself ). The main problem still remains - how to resume processing from the point of failure in the file? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

SQL 2012 :: Deadlock When Inserting And Deleting Items From Same Table

Nov 3, 2015

I am getting a number of deadlocks when inserting and deleting items from the same table.

The delete statement has a U lock and awaiting an IX lock on an index that covers the column in the where clause.

The insert statement has a IX lock and awaiting a U lock on the same index.

The delete statement is deleting about 5000 rows, where as the insert statement is inserting a single row.

Both these statements are found in stored procedures being called from LINQ to SQL.

I am wondering if there is a way I can prevent the delete statement taking the U lock out?My thinking being if the delete didn't take out the U lock then it would not deadlock with the insert. Are there any hints I could use to avoid the particular lock above?

I have seen various examples of multiple updates causing a deadlock, which can be fixed by adding multiple indexes. However, as I am inserting and deleting rows I imagine that all the indexes will need to be updated by both operations.

I have inherited the architecture and don't have the time to redesign everything at present. My backup plan is to deprioritize the delete and build in a retry mechanism.

However, it would be really good if I could find a more elegant way to handle deleting and inserting rows at the same time.

Setting Up File Conn Mgr When File Is Sometimes Empty

Jun 4, 2007

Hi,

Here's an interesting problem. I have to set up connection managers for some files. The thing is, sometimes the files have data in them, sometimes not.

The files that don't have data in them just have some header info, so the file isn't technically empty, but I won't want to load these files when they're empty.

What would be an approach to solving this problem? I can't eliminate the file based on file size, since it's not 0, and there is no set file size that would be a reliable threshold, since they're small files to begin with.

Any ideas?

Thanks

select Examid, count(*) as CumCount
from [dbo].[Exams] where ExamCategory in ('Major','Critical') and Month(EXOCCRDATE) = Month(getdate())
and Year(EXOCCRDATE) = Year(getdate()) group by Examid

The code works good when we have data for the current month. When we dont have any exams for the current month, the code outputs empty values. I want the code to be altered so that when there is no value returned in the output, i want a default value shown in the output.

I have attached the sample data that I am using. In the data we dont have dates for the month of October. So when I run the code it will display empty output. So what I need is I need a text like 'No Data' to be shown when no value is returned by the query.

I tried using case but it does not work.

SQL Server 2012 :: Find Out If Whole Column Of Data In A Table Is Empty?

Dec 2, 2013

I have created some dynamic sql to check a temporary table that is created on the fly for any columns that do contain data. If they do the column name is added to a dynamic sql, if not they are excluded. This looks like:

If (select sum(Case when [Sat] is null then 0 else 1 end) from #TABLE) >= 1 begin set @OIL_BULK = @OIL_BULK + '[Sat]' +',' END

However, I am currently running this on over 230 columns and large tables 1.3 mil rows and it is quite slow. How I can dynamically create a sql script that only selects the columns in the table where there is data in a speedier manner. Unfortunately it has to be on the fly because the temporary table is created on the fly.

DB Engine :: Snapshots Remains In Database After Last CheckDB

Sep 5, 2015

Our last CheckDB failed on the 02/09. We were having problems with our SAN then and that got sorted out. The databases that it failed still has the snapshot showing in SQL Management Studio, screenshot exemple below (server name blanked out)

I reran CheckDB on the 04/09 on all the databases and the same databases that failed on the 02/09 failed again. I noticed in the log file, it tried to use the same snapshot file created on  02/09 to run CheckBD

I ran CheckDB manually on the databases that failed "DBCC CheckDB (WSS_Content_ce) with all_errormsgs" and did not get any errors back.

How do I remove the snapshot databases? We had a problem on 02/09 so the snapshot copy obvisouly has problems. I'd like to remove these snapshots and rerun a CheckDB on all the databases to ensure all is ok.

SELECT @cmd = @cmd + 'AND NOT EXISTS (Select * from DBCleanerHist Where TableName = ''' + @TableToBeCleaned + ''' and sYear = '+ @Year + ' and sMonth = ' + @Month + ')'
print @cmd
SELECT @cmd = @cmd + ' " QUERYOUT ' + @DBCleanerBackUpPath+'' +@TableToBeCleaned +'_'+ @Year + '_' + @Month + '.txt '
SELECT @cmd = @cmd + ' -c -C1250 -S -Uopms -Psmpo'

The subquery checks first in DBCleanerHist if a file already has been extracted onto hd and if so do not create an empty file and overwrite an existing file.
