SQL Express And Selling As A Hosting Service.

Apr 29, 2006

Hi,

Can a web hosting company charge clients for using an SQL Express  instance on their network?

E.g. The host charges the client $x per month per instance. Is this legal?

Selling/Distributing SQL Server Express

May 3, 2007

Hello all,

Thanks for all your great forum topics; it gives me a nice break from coding all day!

I know the answer to this question is in the documentation that comes with the SQL Server Express [9] download, but I've been unable to find it. What I was wondering is what the restrictions were if you were to incorporate the "free" SQL Server Express for selling or general distribution? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

P.

Replication To Web Hosting Service

Jun 6, 2007

Architecture question for anyone....We have a typical SQL Server 3-tier VB.net app running at corporate and want our customers to interact through a website. If we host the website on-site, we can simply access the DB; but if we host at a remote location and want the users to perform updates (think DHL, Wells Fargo, Amazon), we'll need replication with Peer-to-peer. Some basic questions:
1) is everyone doing it this way?
2) will we need a full time replication consultant to set this up, keep it up, and keep an eye on it (administering the 50 user, 200 table DB is relatively easy and we've not needed a DBA for the past 10 years).
3) we're not DHL or Amazon, we just want that kind of end user add/update/delete functionality...so transation rates will be miniscule. But still, the corporate site is constantly being updated so we'll need a fat pipe to the hosting service, etc... any thoughts on performance?
any other tips on doing an installation like this?
thanks in advance

Hosting SQL Everywhere In A Windows Service

Jul 13, 2006

The Sql Mobile site on MSDN recommends that you do not host SQL Everywhere when running as a service. Is this a recommendation, if so why, or is it simply not possible. My understanding is that when hosteed in a IIS hosted application a not supported exception is throw.

If anyone has any ideas on this or pointers to some resources i would appreciate them.

Problem Setting Up SQL DB With Web Hosting Service (IPOWER)

May 6, 2008

I created a small ASP.NET website with VS2008 that employs user authentication (login) functionality to protect some of the site data and allow access only to authenticated users. This functionality created an ASPNETDB SQL database in the project to hold all the user data such as usernames, passwords, user roles, etc. The website works flawlessly on my local PC but when I copy the files to my windows-based web server (IPOWER host) I can't find a way to activate the SQL database so the user authentication functionality works. I've been through all the Scott Guthrie tutorials on this subject here and here, but none of the suggestions worked for me. IPOWER is no help since they will not provide technical support for scripting.

I'm at a loss. This is just a simple little website but I've hit a wall and can't seem to find my way around it. I am new to ASP.NET and SQL server applications so my newbie status certainly plays a role here.

I will gladly pay someone (via PayPal) to spend time with me on the phone talking me through the steps to get the site working on my web hosting site. Other than that, are there any other suggestions on what I could try?

Thanks in advance for your help with this.

Doug

SQL 'Server' Or 'Local' Database For Uploading To Hosting Service Provider

Mar 23, 2007

Hi, I'm developing a website using VWD 2005 Express, which needs a Membership system and a products database. Using the VWD inherent Web Site Administration tool makes the membership set up easy but by default it creates a 'Local' SQL database in a folder named 'Apps_Data' in the VWD project. My question is: considering I will need to upload my web site to a Hosting Service, would it be better to change the default so that the membership systems, and the product database I need, are created in an SQL 'Server' database instead of a 'Local' database?
The hosting service I am considering using is having a bit of a problem understanding this question, I hope it makes sense to someone or am I asking a stupid question?
Regards
Sean.

SQL Server Express Hosting

Dec 29, 2005

I am currently developing an asp.net 2.0 app which uses form authenication now implemented in a sql server express mdf database file. I wonder if there will be problems when I want to deploy this app on a hosted server from a hosting provider. I have the impression that hosting a SQLexpress user instance is currently not supported by hosting companies. Is this correct? Should I revert to an msaccess database instead (we don't want to pay extra for full blown sql server storage).

Shared Hosting And Sql Express Issue

Jan 4, 2007

Hi guys, I hope this is the correct place to post this question. 1) My website makes use of the Membership and Roles of asp.net 2. 2) I have uploaded my website to a shared hosting server, which doesn't support sql express (mdf files). It does support mysql, so I used a custom Membership provider for MySql. 3) It worked greate on my local computer, however (!!) it still creates a aspnetbd.mdf file in the AppData folder. 4) Obviously, when I tried to run it on the website, I got an error. My questions: Why my website still creates a aspnetbd.mdf file even if I am not using it anymore for the Membership ? How can I disable it, in order for it to run on a server which does not support it ? Thanks, Itye.

SQL Express Not Allowed On Shared Hosting !!!

Jan 16, 2006

I've created a new website using the new Visual Studio 2005 Express edition. This site uses SQL Server Express (free software) as a storage for personalization data, etc. Now I want to deploy my site, but here it ends for me:My web site hoster does not support the SQL Express edition in a shared hosting environment. I think most people have a website running in a 'shared hosting' plan. How can this large group enjoy the new Express line when SQL Server Express is not supported?  "SQL Server Express is not a part of the SPLA SPUR (Services Provider License Agreement)", they all say. Here it ends for me, my ISP and their licence supplier. Even at Microsoft's Response Management Team, 'no' is the answer.
What to do now?  Move on to an expensive 'dedicated hosting' plan? Write a membershipprovider for MySQL?I feel as if I was given a free ticket for a nice journey but there's no traffic possible.
Who can help me out here? What can I do...

Express Edition Hosting Issues

Aug 20, 2007

Hi - I am about to sign up with a new hosting company and I wanted to check my use of Express edition would be ok with their setup (full version 2005), they replied:

----------
yes the formats are the same but some functions in the Express Edition are not supported by the full Version as the Express Edition is for development only. We cant say if you will run into any errors as we don't know what you do and which functions you are using.
----------

Is this true - I figured it would be more likely that the the Express edition represented a subset of the full versions functionality and since they produced the same format, would be compatible in this direction. It smells of BS to me but i just wanted to check with the experts...what do you reckon?

Many Thanks,

Steve

Licensing Sql Express For Web Hosting Providers

Oct 24, 2006

For the second time in as many months I've been asked the question. What is the license requirement for me, the service provider, for offering my clients the ability to use SQL Server Express?

I understand the license to say that as long as I'm registered (no cost) there is no further licensing needed in order to offer this to my clients.

Could someone clarify this for me? If I'm incorrect I'd appreciate the right answer.

Thank you!

Web Hosting - ASP.NET With SQL Server 2005 Express Database

Jun 6, 2006

What is needed for a hoster / hosting company to be able to host .Net applications with SQL Server 2005 Express database?

My questions regarding this issue basically are:

If a hoster has several sites hosted on a server, can each one of them have its own SQL Express database?
Or, do they have to be migrated to full SQL Server?

What is with the Upsize Tool for SQL Server Express (or something like that) - is it available?
Generally, how do hosters do their hosting - do they have SQL Server SPLA signed? Or do they just have SQL Server 2005 Express and allow users just to copy their web sites and databases to server?

I would really appreciate any answer.

Kind regards,

Luka

Sql2005 Express NOT AVAIABLE As Shared Hosting Option?

Nov 24, 2005

I haven't find one offering SQL2005EE on .NET2.0 final frameworkI have been told that there isn't ONE host which would offer SQL2005EE on Final .NET2.0 shared hosting, that it is illegal! Only if the shared host provided is free, which is insufficient in my needs (free hosts have low trafic/disk space etc).Is it true? If I pay for hosting, I can't have SQL2005EE as an option in their hosting plan? Just SQL2005 full as an option? This way I need to pick up some expensive shared hosting plan? How you ppl solved this problem?

Sql Server Express - Shared Hosting - Connection String - What Do You Guys Do?

Feb 2, 2007

Hey,

I have a asp.net 2.0 app that has a sql server express backend. I have been scratching my head for weeks trying to find a good wasy to encrypt my connection string. I store the string in web.config (which in itself is in theory "safe" because it's not servable) and I have scoured the web to try to find a simple way to encrypt the connection string. Even using user store would require running aspreg_iis.exe on the host with a command prompt (which clearly I cannot do). It seems that everyone's solution requires running a command prompt executable on the server.

So I am left to wonder what everyone else does. I am not comfortable using just the web.config because a determined hacker could get to that info. Then again, a determined hacker could get into any system , I guess. There are no credit card #'s stored in this app, but in theory there must be a way. I run all access to the db through stored procedures with permissions, for whatever it's worth.

Thanks in advance!
David

Connection String For Selling Web Applications?

Jan 5, 2005

If I'm wanting to sell my Web Applications to clients that run using SQL Server, is it best to use a UserID and Password in the connection string, or would using Windows Integrated Security (SSPI) do? The reason I'm wondering is because I wouldn't know my customer's UserID and Password when they purchased one of my web apps, I would have to recompile the app with the new connection string (I'm not storing it in the web.config file)..

What is the best way to handle this on a global level, so that it would work on any system?

for example, would having the following connection string be a good idea for a production site?

string strMyConnectionString = " Data Source = (local); Integrated Security = SSPI; Initital Catalog = MyDBSource; ";

How To Import SQL 2005 .BAK From One Hosting Package To A Different Hosting Package?

ixwebhosting.com don't have a import feature in their control panel.

I have to maintain the SQL at ixwebhosting.com using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express since they don't have that feature in their cp. I don't see any import features in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express either.

How can I import it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express or another free GUI program?

SQL Server Express Installed But No SQL Server Express Service Present!?!

Mar 14, 2007

Hi

I'm a newbie and I have a problem that i can't solve despite sitting here all day trying to wortk it out.

I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with the associated toolkit. Previous to that i installed MS Visulal studio 2005, .NET 2.0 and MSDN.

The problemn is that it appears despite installing everything i don't have SQLExpress services running on my PC. I have admin rights, it installed okay but there is nothing to connect to.

When i run "sqlcmd.exe -s (local)SQLExpress -E" from the command prompt i get the following message:

HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.

When i run SQL Server Configuration there is no "SQLExpress" service present under "SQL Server 2005 Servcies" in SQL Server Configuration dialog; just a message saying:

"there are no items to show in this view"

When i run Surface Area Configuration i get the following message:

TITLE: Surface Area Configuration
------------------------------

No SQL Server 2005 components were found on the specified computer. Either no components are installed, or you are not an administrator on this computer. (SQLSAC)

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

OK
------------------------------

If you can shed any light on this id be extreamly grateful as i'd been here for hours before stumbling across the toolkit (why this wasn't bundled i don't know) only to realise once i had it that the SQLExpress service isn't running :(

Cheers,

Nick.

Removing SQL 2005 Express Service

Jan 18, 2008

I read on MSDN how to manually uninstall the instance of SQL server 2005 express, however i am not sure that it will remove the service. The reason i need to do this is that an application i have installed SQL Server 2005, and also QPulse5 SQL Server. I have two instances and it is giving me compile issues which i believe is related to having both services. I did add/remove programs and reinstalled just SQL Server 2005 and recieved error message saying that the service failed to start. The whole problem of this occured when we ran DCPromo with SQL installed. After we did we relized you could not promote with SQL Server. I understand that it is not recommended running SQL Server on a DC, however we did not have a choice. I am hoping someone here may have a solution for this. If there is any other information you need just let me know. Thanks

Integration Service Express/2005

Sep 13, 2007

I finally bit the bullet and uninstalled all of Sql Server 2005 and installed Sql Server 2005 Express both Advanced and the Toolkit. I can get in and see everything locally and my production Great Plains server just fine through Management console. The one thing I can't do is open an integration package to process our credit cards.

It's a pretty simple integration, but when I go to open it in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, the only thing it shows installed was Reporting services, not Integration services. When I try to open the project it gives me:
"The application for project 'c:pcard...' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type(.dtproj) is installed."
I had a problem earlier with the gui not coming up but was resolved when I applied SS2005 SVP 2. Some items wasn't on the same version. I re-applied svp 2 after I installed SS express and still got the above. If I try and 'add' Integration Services, either thru Express or just regular ss2005, it says it's already installed.

Do I have to modify the registry so that it comes up on Business Intelligence Dev Studio? I can't run the integration if I can't open the project.
