SQL Server 2008 :: Prerequisites For Additional Instance On Existing Cluster?
Sep 4, 2015
We have a SQL 2008 Instance existing on active/passive cluster with 2 nodes running on Windows server 2008 R2 Ent. Edn.
Now we need to install another SQL instance on this cluster. So what are the prerequisites apart from new IP address? Do we need shared disks or can the existing disks can be utilized?

Slq Server 2012.
After is completed, it was successful, I realized I specified the wrong Instance Root directory.
Is it possible to remove what the preparation installed? Or is it possible to change the root directory?

Hi
I need this script to work on any instance:
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'bcp mosaikDB741.dbo.FilelistInput in csvFilePath.csv -t -c -userName -Ppassword -Sinstance'
Can I customize it more in order if someone runs it on a different instance or server it won t fail. All he will need to replace is the username, password and make sure there is mosaikDB741.dbo.FilelistInput table and csvFilePath.csv file
Thanks a lot.

I have some transactions with the same card number that needs to add value amount to its existing balance. For example:
Card Number Balance Amount Issue Date Issue Branch.
4000111122223333 $100.00 10/1/2015 123 <= This is an existing row in Card Number SQL table.
Now, the same card number with additional $50 dollars that I want to add to this card number to make the total to become $150. This additional $50 is from another transaction table. On the contrary, I will have -$20 from the same card number in different transaction that I will need to deduce $150-$20 to become $130. How can I update the card number table with debit/credit transactions to keep the outstanding balance?

I've managed to use the pivot function using the code below which gives me the following output:
Location_Code Gt 0-1 Gt 1-2 Gt 2-3 Gt 3-4
North 10 0 3 5
West 6 3 2 0
South 4 2 8 2
This is exactly what I want but I would like an additional final column that will total the columns by location_code and weekband.
[Location_Code] AS 'Location Code'
,[Gt 0-1], [Gt 1-2], [Gt 2-3], [Gt 3-4]
from (select [WeekBand]
,[Location_Code]
, count(*) as CountOf

I have a 2 part question about adding a new 'named' Virtual Server to an existing Clustered SQL Server 2000 install.
I have a 2 node MSCS Cluster (WIN2K advanced Server sp4) with a default SQL Server instance. This has been in production and working fine. I created a new Cluster resource and reran SQL Server 2000 ENT setup and added a second Virtual SQL Server (named instance). After many problems, finally got the second Server installed. Now I have 2 SQL Server instances in the Cluster - from what I understand, you can have up to 16, each seperate installs with seperate Cluster resources.
Thus the problem:
For the Second Instance, I have specific instructions from the Applications vendor on how to install SQL Server to work with their APP. I need install SQL Server WITHOUT the Full Text Search component and WITH a specific Server Collation (Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set). (I have done this same setup on standalone SQL Server installations for this APP and they have gone smooth).
When I installed the new Virtual 'named' instance in my Cluster, I Could NOT 'DESELECT' Full Text Search when I choose Custom install.. it does not appear as an option???
Also, I chose the "Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set" during the installation, but that is not the Server Collation that is installed...
I have already installed SP3 for SQL Server against the Virtual Server on this Cluster, as well as a HotFix... and Now I'm thinking I need to rerun the SQL Server installation, uninstall the second server and reinstall to see if I can fix the 'Collation problem' .. but I'm not sure if this is the right course of action.
Does anyone know why I cannot 'deselect' Full text search component at install, and any ideas why it did not install with the SQL Server Collation that I specified at install????

I have an urgent query that we are running SharePoint server 2013 on single server and installed SQL server 2012 on single server, our management decided that we need to configure failover cluster on existing SQL server. I want to confirm that it is possible that we can install failover clustering services on existing SQL server and then add an other server on SQL 2012 for high availability or do we need to first install failover cluster service and then install SQL server for failover clustering.

This is a fresh install of SQL Server 2005 (64bit) on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 64bit OS. The Cluster has been built and SQL 2005 has been installed (Database Engine(clustered), Analysis Server(clustered), Notification Server, Integration Server, Reporting Services). SQL 2005 SP2 has been installed.
Now, I want to install Notification Server, Integration Server and Reporting Services on the second node for high availability.
When I select 'Install New Components' from Add/Remove Programs, the System Configuation Checker tells me theres a version difference and to:
To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter.
I'm using the same binaries as the original install. Could this be a result of installing SQL 2005 SP2?
Can someone help me out with this. I'd prefer using the setup interface instead of a command line script.

Given than once SQL Server 2005 is installed, SQL Server Studio has to
be used instead of Enterprise manager, can both SQL 2000 and 2005 be
used on the same machine, be it development or production? (The second
one to be installed probably would be a named instance.)
Any experiance of doing this or a pointer to a Microsoft recommendation would be appreciated.

Hey,
I have a 3 node cluster running 6 instances of SQL Server, I want to install Analysis Services along side of one of the SQL 2005 instances. Thus one of the cluster instances would host SQL Server DB, Analysis Services and SQL Agent. Is this possible or does Analysis Services need it's own Cluster Instance.
Thanks!

If I install a new named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on a machine that already has 3 named instances that are upgraded to service pack 3, will the install of the new instance overwrite any of the current SP3 files? Will I have to re-apply SP 3 to the existing instances?

In QA we have a two-node cluster with four instances of sql. In trying to add a fifth, I was given an IP address already in use so the install hung.
I removed it from the cluster but it is still there in the registry etc on the node I was working on.
I read about using the maintenance tab of the sql server install to "remove a node" but the terminology is confusing. To me a node is a physical server and an instance is an instance of sql server -- not the same at all but they are often referred to as the same thing.
I definitely don't want to remove one of the servers from the cluster.

I have a scenario where I need to add a blank column to a table that is a publisher. This table contains over 100 million records. What is the best way to add the column? In the past where I had to make an update, it breaks replication because the update would take forever as jobs are continuously updating the table so replication can't catch up.
If I alter a table and add a column, would this column automatically get picked up in replication?

We have an existing BI/DW process that adds large chunks of data daily (~10M rows) to an existing table, as well as using Deletes to remove stale data. This scenario seems to beg for partitioning to support switching in/out data.
After lots of reading on this, I have figured out the mechanics of the switching, bit I still have some unknowns about the indexes needed to support this.
The table currently has several non-clustered indexes, including one on the partitioning column - let's call that column snapshotdate. Fortunately there are no FKs involved, and no constraints.
Most of the partitioning material I see focuses on creating a clustered PK to assist with switching. Not sure if this is actually necessary, but assume I create one using an Identity column (currently missing) plus snapshotdate.
For the other non-clustered, non-unique indexes, can I just add the snapshotdate to the end of the index? i.e. will that satisfy the switching requirement?

Let's say I have a function named MyCustomFunction and I want to ensure that it exists in the database. Let's say I have a create script for the function. I want the script to be runnable multiple times if needed. A common way to do this is to check for an object_id at the top of the function like this:
IF OBJECT_ID('MyCustomFunction') IS NULL
DROP FUNCTION MyCustomFunction
GO
CREATE FUNCTION MyCustomFunction...
But is there a more elegant way to do this? For example, instead of dropping and recreating the function, is there a way to simply exit from the script and do nothing if the function already exists? Something like this:
IF OBJECT_ID('MyCustomFunction') IS NULL RETURN
GO
CREATE FUNCTION MyCustomFunction...

How can I find calls which do not exist in stored procedures and functions? We have many stored procedures, sometimes a stored procedure or function which is called does not exist. Is there a query/script or something that I can identify which stored procedures do not 'work' and which procedure/ function they are calling?I am searching for stored procedures and functions which are still called, but do not exist in the current database.

I have a requirement to add new calendar columns from Jan to Dec in an existing SSRS report based on certain conditions.
The report uses a simple query at the moment.
SELECT [PROJECT ID]
,[PROJECT]
,[STATUS]
,[ACTUAL START]
,[ESTIMATED END]
FROM Projects
The requirement to add the new calendar columns is based on the following conditions:
1. If the Status value is “2” then for each Month in the current year, shade in green for the particular current month
For example, if for a particular Project for month/year of April 2015
Year/Month(Actual Start date) is < = April 2015
and Year/Month(Estimate End date) > = April 2015, then April should be shaded green.
2. The logic needs to be repeated from each month in the current year.
3. Some Estimate and Actual dates run from previous year, or into next year, so year also needs to be taken into consideration.
find the DDL and sample data below.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Projects](
[PROJECT ID] [nvarchar](255) NULL,
[PROJECT] [nvarchar](255) NULL,
[STATUS] [nvarchar](255) NULL,
[ACTUAL START] [datetime] NULL,
[ESTIMATED END] [datetime] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
insert into Projects
values('1','TFD','2','2015-01-31 00:00:00.000','2015-12-31 00:00:00.000')
insert into Projects
values('2','JUH','1','2015-02-01 00:00:00.000','2015-02-27 00:00:00.000')
insert into Projects
values('3','REFFD','2','2015-01-31 00:00:00.000','2015-11-30 00:00:00.000')
[code].....
how to rewrite the existing query to add new calendar columns in the report and then in the SSRS output shade green based on the above condition.

I have some huge tables (think 200+GB for a single table) which are excellent candidates for sparse columns. The tables have many columns which are defined with decimal datatypes (13,2) with a large percentage of them (over 50% in most cases- some as much as 99%) being 0.00. Since this is very expensive in terms of storage my idea is to set all the 0.00 values equal to NULL then set them as sparse. Across 100 or so identical databases, I have 5 such tables, with 20-40 columns in each table.
1.) three steps for each column in each table in each db.
Step 1: update table to allow for nulls
Step 2: update tabe set column=null where column =0.00
Step 3 update table set sparse columns
2.)
Step 1: Create entirely new table with sparse column definitions
Step 2: copy entire table, transforming 0.00 to null for affected columns via SSIS
Step 3: drop original table, rename new table to original name

I need to recover some data in a table but i'm not 100% sure the right way to do this safely.
I'll need to query the two tables to compare the before and after but how do i go about restoring/attaching the backup database to SQL without causing conflicts?
If I restore, I assume this would just overwrite which is obviously the worst thing that can happen. if i attach the backup, how does this affect the current live DB? how do i make sure that it's not getting accessed and mistaken for the live DB?
The SQL server is 2008 R2 running as a VM.

Is it possible to change the collation of your instance?
As far as I know it is not possible to change the collation once SQL Server has been installed.
When I said that SQL needs to be reinstalled at work the guys sent me this link: [URL]....
I ran it exactly like that but the collation didn't change.
I have also restarted the services but the collation is still the same.
Am I running this code wrong or am I right about not being able to change the collation after installation?
