SQL Server 2014 :: Isolation Level Read Committed Snapshot

Dec 10, 2014

I have several databases set to read committed snapshot isolation level. Tempdb is configured according to best practices, but I don't see it's used much.

The application uses EF6, and it calls the stored procedures in the following way

Database.ExecuteSqlCommandAsync("exec dbo.spSync_MatchesByTenant @MatchesGroup, @TenantId", parameter, licenseIDParam);

Is it possible the code does not use the read committed snapshot isolation level of the database?

SQL 2012 :: Calculate TempDB Size For Read Committed Snapshot Enabled

I receive Error: 3967, Severity: 17, State: 1. Insufficient space in tempdb to hold row versions. We have 8 data files for temp db of 10210 GB size and given 10240 GB as max size.

As MS suggest to calculate the temp db file size and growth rate we need to monitor the perform counters Free Space in Tempdb (KB) and Version Store Size (KB) in the Transactions object.

basic formula: [Size of Version Store] = 2 * [Version store data generated per minute] * [Longest running time (minutes) of your transaction

My report disk utilizations says tempdb is full ? I thonk I need a shrink for the file .

Still I am confused in calculating the size , My perform counter gives me data as such

Free Space in tempdb (KB)               279938496
Version Generation rate (KB/s)           53681040
Version Cleanup rate (KB/s)       53422320
Version Store Size (KB)      258720
Version Store unit count        22

SQL 2012 :: Read Committed For Read Only Database?

Jun 27, 2014

i have a database which get refreshed every day from client's data . and we need to pull heavy data from them every day as reports . so only selects happens on that database.

we do daily population of some table in some other databases from this daily refreshed DB.

will read uncommitted or NOLOCK with select queries to retrieve data faster.

there will be no dirty read as there are NO DML operation in that database so for SELECT which happens concurrently on these tables , will NOLOCK work?

SQL Server 2008 :: Update With Xlock / Rowlock And Read With Nolock

What's the precedence level in SQL server? If I add xlock, rowlock to the update statement, will the dirty read wait for the update transaction to commit, or will it perform a dirty read regardless of the locking scheme in the update statement?

Read Before Committed, Comments?

Mar 10, 2000

Consider this example please.
BEGIN TRAN
insert into OrderDetail (fields) VALUES (values)
insert into Orders (fields) VALUES (values)
COMMIT TRAN

If there is a trigger on Orders that takes some fields from OrderDetail and puts them into some other table.

When the trigger fires, can it find the details if the COMMIT has not occurred yet.

I'm wondering If I should use isolation level READ UNCOMMITTED.
After all, If the whole transaction rolls back, my trigger activity will be rolled back as well. Comments?

SQL Server 2008 :: Update Null Enabled Field Without Interfering With Rest Of INSERT / UPDATE

Apr 16, 2015

If I have a table with 1 or more Nullable fields and I want to make sure that when an INSERT or UPDATE occurs and one or more of these fields are left to NULL either explicitly or implicitly is there I can set these to non-null values without interfering with the INSERT or UPDATE in as far as the other fields in the table?

EXAMPLE:

CREATE TABLE dbo.MYTABLE(
ID NUMERIC(18,0) IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
FirstName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
LastName VARCHAR(50) NULL,

[Code] ....

If an INSERT looks like any of the following what can I do to change the NULL being assigned to DateAdded to a real date, preferable the value of GetDate() at the time of the insert? I've heard of INSTEAD of Triggers but I'm not trying tto over rise the entire INSERT or update just the on (maybe 2) fields that are being left as null or explicitly set to null. The same would apply for any UPDATE where DateModified is not specified or explicitly set to NULL. I would want to change it so that DateModified is not null on any UPDATE.

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
VALUES('John','Smith',NULL)

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName)
VALUES('John','Smith')

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
SELECT FirstName, LastName, NULL
FROM MYOTHERTABLE

Locking In Read Committed With Row Versioning Isolation Level

Dec 27, 2007

I have a question on locking pattern of read committed with snapshot isolation level that when two transaction update two different records then why do they block to each other even if they have previous committed value (old version of record).

I executed the below batch from a query window in SSMS

--Session 1:
use adventureworks
create table marbles (id int primary key, color char(5))
insert marbles values(1, 'Black')
insert marbles values(2, 'White')
alter database adventureworks set read_committed_snapshot on
set transaction isolation level read committed
begin tran
update marbles set color = 'Black' where color = 'White'

--commit tran

Before committing the first transaction I executed below query from second query window in SSMS

--Session 2:
use adventureworks
set transaction isolation level read committed
begin tran
update marbles set color = 'White' where color = 'Black'
commit tran

Here the first session blocks to second session. These same transactions execute simultaneuosly in snapshot isolation level. So my question is why this blocking is required in read committed with snapshot isolation level?

Thanks & Regards,
Subhash Chandra

SQL Server 2008 :: Why CDC Returning Insert / Delete When UPDATE A Row In Table

Mar 15, 2013

I am experimenting with using CDC to track user changes in our application database. So far I've done the following:

-- ENABLE CDC ON DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
EXEC sys.sp_cdc_enable_db
GO

-- ENABLE CDC TRACKING ON THE AVA TABLE IN DV_WRP_TEST
USE dv_wrp_test

[Code] ....

The results shown above are what I expect to see. My problem occurs when I use our application to update the same column in the same table. The vb.net application passes a Table Valued Parameter to a stored procedure which updates the table. Below is the creation script for the stored proc:

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO

if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id('dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate') and sysstat & 0xf = 4)
drop procedure dbo.spdv_AVAUpdate

[Code] ....

When I look at the results of CDC, instead of operations 3 and 4, I see 1 (DELETE) and 2 (INSERT) for the change that was initiated from the stored procedure:

-- GET CDC RESULTS FOR CHANGES TO AVA TABLE
USE dv_wrp_test
GO
SELECT *
FROM cdc.dbo_AVA_CT
GO

--RESULTS SHOW OPERATION 1 (DELETE) AND 2 (INSERT) INSTEAD OF 3 AND 4
--__$start_lsn__$end_lsn__$seqval__$operation__$update_maskAvaKeyAvaDescAvaArrKeyAvaSAPAppellationID
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000230x02119Test26NULL
--0x0031E84F000000740008NULL0x0031E84F00000074000240x02119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000310x0F119Test36NULL
--0x0031E84F00000098000ANULL0x0031E84F00000098000420x0F119Test46NULL

Why this might be happening, and if so, what can be done to correct it? Also, is there any way to get the user id associated with the CDC?

SQL Server 2008 :: Is There Any Way To Override Explicit Nulls On INSERT / UPDATE

Nov 2, 2015

If a column is set to allow nulls I know that a constraint can be used to supply a default (i.e. GetDate() ) when no value is provided but what about when an explicit NULL is provided in an INSERT or UPDATE statement? Is there any way other then an AFTER trigger to substitute a value for an explicitly provided NULL? In other words, assuming that dtAsof is a NULL enabled column, is there any way to over ride what the following will do to MYTABLE:

INSERT MYTABLE(sCol1, sCol2, sCol3, dtAsOf)
SELECT 'a', 'b', 'c', NULL

If there's no way to do this in SQL Server 2008R2 then what about later versions of SQL Server? Do any more recent versions have a way to deal with this? We have a third party app that uses a SQL Server back end and many of the tables have columns for storing audit like data such as date/time but many are left to NULL values and I'd really like to fix that in as passive a way as possible so as to not break the app that uses the database. I know a constraint with a default can be sued to over ride a null but not when a null is explicitly provided.

How Do I Update New Record Before It Is Committed?

Jun 9, 2008

I have a queue in service broker, which gets messages with a stored procedure which is invoked from VS application. The messages are properly stored in queue. I want to receive these messages one after the other and put it into a table. I am fetching the messages in a while loop which breaks when messages are over.

The first record is inserted properly. In the next iteration of the loop I want to append the next message data in that same record. This will continue for approximately 10 minutes after which a new record will be created. When I attempt to append the data in first record that record is not being read even though I have used isolation level read uncommitted.

What is it that I am missing to achieve the desired results?

SQL Server 2008 :: Transactional Replication Snapshot In Multiple Files

Sep 15, 2015

We have a large database with a small number of large tables in it (and a larger number of SMALLER tables), and it is a publisher for a transactional replication scenario. When I create a snapshot to initialize a new subscription, I notice with the larger tables that sometimes it generates multiple files in the snapshot folder, usually in multiples of 16, and numbers them like this:

MyTable_3#1.bcp
MyTable_3#2.bcp
...
MyTable_3#16.bcp

With other tables, I'll get just one LARGE snapshot file, named:

MyOtherTable_4.bcp

In the latter case, the file can be very large (most recent is 38GB).

In both cases, the subscription will eventually be initialized, but the smaller files will generate separate log entries every few minutes in the Replication Monitor, showing 'Bulk Copied data into 'MyTable' (34231221 rows)', whereas the larger table will generate only ONE log entry, showing 'Bulk coping data into table 'MyOtherTable', and it may take a couple of hours before there is anything else showing...except for an entry saying, 'The process is running and is waiting for a response from the server.'

My question is: what would be the difference between the two tables that would result in one generating MULTIPLE snapshot files, the other only a single, much larger one? The only difference I can see in the table definition is that the one generating multiple files has a clustered index, whereas the others do not.

SQL Server 2008 :: Changing Alt Snapshot Folder For Merge Replication?

I’ll probably just change it through the GUI, but would I use sp_changedistpublisher or sp_changemergepublication if I were scripting everything?

My real concern is the subscribers. Do I have to ‘tell’ the subscribers where the alt folder has been changed to? Do I just run sp_changemergepullsubscription on the subscribers?

SQL Server 2008 :: Transactional Replication Snapshot - Does Not Generate Any Files For New Article

Oct 22, 2015

There is a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 Clustered Instance that has Transactional Replication. It is by no means a large replication setup in terms of data/article count. SQL Server was recently patched to SP3 and is current on Windows 2008 R2 Patches.

When I added a new article to replication (via 2014 SSMS GUI) it seems to add everything correctly (replication tables/procs show the new article as part of the publication).
The Publication is set to allow the snapshot to generate for just new articles (setting immediate_sync & allow_anonymous to false).

When the snapshot agent is run, it runs without error and claims to have generated a snapshot of 1 article. However the snapshot folder only contains a folder for the instance (that does have the modified time of the snapshot agent execution) and none of the regular bcp/schema files.

The tables never make it to the subscribers and replication continues on without error for the existing articles. No agents produce any errors and running the snapshot agent w/ verbose output provides no errors or insight into any possible issues.

I have tried:

- dropping/re-adding the article in question.

- Setting up a new Snapshot Folder

- Validated all the settings and configurations

I'm hesitant to reinitialize a subscriber since I am not confident a snapshot can be generated. Also wondering if this is related to the SP3 Upgrade, every few months new articles are added to the publication and this is the first time since the upgrade to SP3 that it has been done.

My Stored Procedure has below logic

DECLARE @NextNumber BIGINT
----------- Acquire row lock here
SELECT @NextNumber = NextNumber FROM tblOnboardingSequence WHERE Name = 'TPO'
UPDATE tblOnboardingSequence SET NextNumber = @NextNumber + 1 WHERE Name = 'TPO'
----------- Release row lock here

SQL Server 2008 :: Replication Articles Read-only AND Updateable At Same Time

Apr 21, 2015

We have many users with a mobile application running SQL Mobile and using merge replication to get data back to the SQL 2008 R2 database. This has worked very well for many years.

We now have a requirement to have this data reported on using Reporting Services. This is where it gets messy.

Due to a limitation of Report Builder(see this blog) we cannot provide access to users for creating their own reports. The report database is remote from the host and there is no VPN.

We hit upon the idea of creating an almost identical publication but the articles as read-only. It was only after this was done that we started having trouble with our existing mobile users.

It seems that a published article is EITHER Bi-directional OR Read-only even if they are in separate publications.

I then thought of using Transactional Publication but this too is blocked on creation with "automatic identity range support is useful only for publications that allow updating subscribers"(Merge and Transactional publication are mutually exclusive)

So in the final analysis is there a way for me to have merge replication AND some other form of SQL replication/data transfer that can have the same data transmitted readonly to a separate full SQL server database?

Insert, Select, Update And Delete

Apr 7, 2006

I've got four pages with in the first page a insert, in the second a select, in the thirth a update and in the fourth a delete statement. First the values of a textbox will be inserted in the database, then the values will be shown in labels and than it is possible to edit or delete the values inserted. Every inserted item belonging to each other has one ID. The follwing values has a second ID etc.
How can I make that possible?? I think that I should pass the ID's between the pages so I'm sure that I edit or delete the values that I want. So insert value 1 in page 1, show with select value 1 in page 2, edit or delete value 1 in page 3 and 4.
Maybe I didn't explain it good enough for you, please tell me then!!

This causes duplicate rows to appear due to the case statement, I'm trying to figure out if / how it is possible to only display the one row per conversation and set newmessage to 1 if there is an un-read message otherwise show 0 ?

So instead of showing this:
