SQL Server 2008 :: Migrate Contents Of Large Table From One DB To Another?

Mar 3, 2015

I have a large table containing about 800 million rows with an average row length of about 1K. The columns in the table are char columns. I need to move the contents of this table into a similar table where the target columns are varchar. The original table column definitions are compatible with the target table but the reverse is not necessarily true. For example, one column is being changed from int to bigint. The table is partitioned.

So, what is the fastest way to migrate the data. I was thinking to unload each partition into a flat file and load the target table running multiple load streams? Is this a good way?

SQL Server 2008 :: Easy Way To Compare Contents Of Objects Between 2 Different Databases?

Jul 20, 2015

Is there an easy way to compare the contents of objects between 2 different databases? For example, say I had 2 databases, My_DB_1 and My_DB_2, each with a SEC_User table. Say I wanted to do an object-to-object comparison between databases to see if there were any differences. Here's some sample SQL:

use My_DB_1
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')

use My_DB_2
select * from sys.dm_sql_referencing_entities('dbo.sec_user', 'object')

Say that the result sets above both returned a SEC_GetUser sproc object ref. Is there a way to write SQL that will compare the SEC_GetUser sprocs (and other objects in the above rowsets) from both databases? For example, if My_DB_1.SEC_GetUser returns an extra column in the result set than My_DB_2.SEC_GetUser then I'd like my comparison SQL to return a single column "IsDifferent" with SEC_GetUser as a row....

If the flow is smooth then no issues, if one of the file does not reach DR
the entire setup will halt for the want of the file and I dn't have any means to
know which file is missing.

Both my production and DR site located remotely behind firewalls, i.e i can't
physically access the servers or remotely login to the server.

Can anyone tell me how to see the contents in a folder in the server using

SQL Server 2008 :: Store Long Values To Be Used In (IN) Statement In Separate Table?

Jul 14, 2015

I have several reports that are looking for a code within a certain set of codes or ranges. The specific list of codes to be including is determined by the end user. Currently my "IN" statement can be a hundred lines, listing several ranges, lists of specific codes, etc. I am constantly getting asked what codes does it include, is this code included, etc. Sometimes they'll give me a printed 10 page list of codes and want me to compare to what I have included in the report. Not ideal in the slightest.

What I'd like to do is have a table or a file of some kind somewhere where the end user can view the codes contained, add new ones, and delete ones they no longer want. Then I'd like to be able to just reference that file in my IN statement. Leaving the responsibility of listing the correct codes on them.

SQL Server 2008 :: Converting Adjacency List To Hierarchy Table

Feb 10, 2015

I have been trying to convert an existing table that used adjacency list model (parentid, childid) to a table that use hierarchy Id type. So early on, I notice my original data does contains multiple roots. So I took a step to create dummy nodes to ensure all nodes fall into a single root structure. Another important fact is that each child node can have multiple parents.

My original source table contains 22461 records, when running the query below step 2 produces explosive number of records around 175,000+ records. I spent hours study the result and couldn't understand what actually causing this, I ran it against small set of test data I didn't seem the issue caused by child with multiple parents.

select * from SourceTable -- produces 22461 records

--step 1: first, get row number of child records in each parent

SELECT ChildID,ParentID, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY PARENTID ORDER BY PARENTID) as Num
INTO #RelationshipTmp

SQL Server 2008 :: Run All Stored Procedures In A Database

Under normal curcumstances, I'd create a "master" procedure that would call each one in turn using the "EXECUTE" syntax.

As there will be around 140 procedures (there are a few more but they are used for different purposes), I'd like to try and execute them dynamically.

Is there any way of finding out which procedures match the pattern of "usp_merge_*" for the name and executing it?

I know it can be achieved by exporting the store procedures and then execute that at the B database but I want something a bit more automatic since it can be a large number of sprocs. I am trying something like this (still in dev):

SET NOCOUNT ON;
--
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY definition) seq, definition base

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Run Procedures With Execute As Owner

Jun 19, 2015

I have a periodic backup task, and when I need a development copy on which to test code, I restore my most recent backup to a different name, switch the ODBC link to that name on my development machine and have a current copy of the database to play with.

I've been doing this for years, and it works great. Just now I did it, and suddenly my development machine is unable to run any stored procedures that have the 'Execute as owner' clause in their definition. I'm using domain accounts, my personal account is the owner of the database, and everything works on the production copy, which is in the same instance on the same machine.

The test copy is identical to the production copy, which continues to work fine - it was just created using by restoring the backup of the production copy, but I can't run anything with this clause. As soon as I delete the 'Execute as owner' line, the procedure is suddenly available. If I put it back, I'm locked out again.

The error message is: The server principal “sa” is not able to access the database “WhateverDB” under the current security context

Is it possible that subsequent defragmentation of indexes would have caused the respective page id to got re-allocated to a different table? I checked the deadlock graph lately only after 3-4 weeks.

Checking Contents Of Column And Replacing Contents If First Character Is A Letter

Jun 25, 2007

Hi All,I have come up against a wall which i cannot get over.I have an sql db where the date column is set as a varchar (i know, should have used datetime but this was done before my time and i've got to work with what is there). The majority of values are in the format dd/mm/yyyy. However, some values contain the word 'various'.I'm attempting to compare the date chosen on a c# .net page with the values in the db and also return all the 'various' values as well.I have accomplished casting the varchar to a datetime and then comparing to the selected date on the .net page. However, it errors when it comes across the 'various' entrant. Is there anyway to carry out a select statement comparing the start_date values in the db to the selected date on the .net page and also pull out all 'various' entrants at the same time without it erroring? i thought about replacing the 'various' to a date like '01/01/2010' so it doesn't stumble over the none recognised format, but am unsure of how to do it.This is how far i have got: casting the varchar column to datetime and comparing.  SELECT * FROM table1 WHERE Cast(SUBSTRING(Start_Date,4,2) + '/' + SUBSTRING(Start_Date,1,2) + '/' +SUBSTRING(Start_Date,7,4) as datetime)  '" + date + "'"Many thanks in advance!
