SQL Server 2008 :: Service Broker Queue In Database

Feb 3, 2015

I had to restore a database in one of the staging servers the other day. However, upon completion, I found out that the service broker queue in the database is not working anymore. The service broker queue error was similiar to this error:
The activated proc dbo.procedure_name running on queue database_name.dbo.queue_name output the following: '<error message>.'

Can See Service Broker Queue With SQL Server Login

Sep 7, 2006

I have an application that is reading a message from a Service Broker Queue. When I use integrated security with an NT account it works fine. When I use a SQL Server User through Management Studio I can select from the Queue however, when I use this same account through the web app with the SQL Server User, I cannot see the Queue. Is there a grant that I must do to this account to get it to see the Service Broker Objects?

Service Broker Queue Reader Question

Aug 31, 2006

I'm creating an app that could potentially send thousands of messages to a Service Broker queue in a matter of seconds. The stored proc that reads records off the queue will call a remote stored procedure for each message to save data in a remote database.

My question is this. How does Service Broker determine how quickly to read those messages off the queue it was sent to? Ideally I'd like Service Broker to do most of its work when SQL Server isn't busy doing other things instead of contending with SQL Server while it's doing perhaps more important work. Is there any way to control this? How does this work?

Thanks very much - Amos

Calling An SSIS Package From A Service Broker Queue

Feb 26, 2007

Posted the same message to the Service Broker forum. But the board is neither responsive nor active. So I am trying this forum. Hope someone can help.

I would like to call an SSIS package from a Service Broker Queue.

There is one way that I am aware of -

Using xp_cmdshell from within an activation stored procedure and using DTEXEC.

Is there a more elegant way of executing an SSIS package from within SSB?

Also,
I am not interested in writing a .NET external activator to process my
messages in the queue. I would like this operation to be strictly
database oriented. Having said this, I am also trying to avoid triggers
processing the messages in the queue.

Thank you!

Hello,

is there built-in support for monitoring the number of elements in the transmission queue via performance counters?

Thanks,

SQL Service Broker - How To Resend Messages In Sender Transmission Queue?

Nov 26, 2007

I have a question about SQL Service Broker.

Here are the steps I use to produce the issue.

1) I drop the Service Broker on the Receiver by running the following sql script:

if exists (select * from sys.services where name = N'//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter') drop service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter]

2) I send some messages using the SQL Service broker on the sender side

3) The messages I send stay in sender transmission queue. Here is an example of what my transmission queue looks like after running select * from sys.transmission_queue on the sender.

Service Broker received an error message on this conversation. Service Broker will not transmit the message; it will be held until the application ends the conversation.

The main point is that the sys.transmission queue retains the messages with the error 'Service Broker will not transmit the message; it will be held until the application ends the conversation.'

4. I execute the following sql statment on the sender:

select * from sys.conversation_endpoints

and see that the conversation that sent the messages are in state 'ER'

5. I then recreate the receiver with the following script:

create service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter] authorization dbo on queue dbo.TyMetrix360AuditQueue([//TyMetrix360Audit/Contract])

6. I send some more messages and see that the new messages are being received and processed correctly.

7. But what of the messages stuck in the sender transmission queue. How are these messages to be resent? Since the conversations are in state 'ER' it seems they are not being resent. Do I need to write a custom SQL script to resend them? I do not want to end the conversation because the message will be lost and not resent.

So, in conclusion, the main question is:

When the receiver goes down, or the receiver service broker simply does not exist and messages pile up the sender transmission queue like in my example how do these messages get resent when the receiver is restored?

By the way when I run

select service_broker_guid from sys.databases where database_id = db_id()

I get the same GUID after the server is restored.

Thanks

First Service Broker Attempt, Prajdic's Example, Error: Queue Has Been Disabled

Sep 17, 2007

I am using the Centralized Asynchronous Auditing with Service Broker article example to set up my first Service Broker attempt. We want to start logging search criteria and search results for our product search page. We wanted it to be asynchronous and be stored in another dbase, this seemed like the perfect example.

I modified the example above to save into an Audit table we created and to read a custom message that I generated the XML for. I'm pretty certain that should all work. However, I didn't change much else but I can't get the message to send.

This is the error I'm getting in profiler:
This message could not be delivered because the destination queue has been disabled. Queue ID: 197575742.

I am sending from one database to another within the same SQL server instance. Here are the profiler details

Broker:Message Undeliverable This message was dropped because it could not be dispatched on time. State: 2 sa

When I run SELECT * FROM sys.transmission_queue I get this in the transmission_status:
"One or more messages could not be delivered to the local service targeted by this dialog."

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direciton, thanks.

Nov 26, 2007

Here is a description:

1. drop receiver side service broker with sql command : drop service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter]

2. send a message from the sender.

3. now the sys.transmission_queue on the sender keeps the message.

The relevant tables on the sender and receiver no look like this:

the following summarizes the transmission queue on the SENDER:

What do I do now?

There is a message stuck in the sender transmission queue. You responded in my last post that I need to do a RECIEVE on the sender and end the conversation myself? This is not helping me. I am still confused about the answer to this. Can you provide some sort of code outline or steps to resolve this issue. As of now I do not know how to resend my messages stuck in the sender transmission queue and they can not be lost when the conversation is ended.

Also, I thought SQL Service broker was supposed to hadle things like this. It is common for the receiver to not be there. In this case the messages should resend automatically once the receiver is back up. Please help as there is no documentation online about how to resolve this issue and your last response was not adequate.

Thanks

SQL Server 2008 :: Service Broker And Temp Tables

Feb 12, 2015

Let's say that I have a stored proc that is assigned to a service broker queue and is constantly running while it waits for messages in said queue. When a message comes in on the queue, the stored proc creates a table variable based off of the contents of the message and performs various operations with the data. Since the stored proc is constantly running, do the contents of this table variable ever truly get emptied? Should I be deleting the contents of the table variable at the end of the operation to ensure that stale data doesn't persist?

How To Prevent The Hang On The Initator Service Broker If The Target Service Broker Is Not Started?

But the sitation is the initator service broker (in fact, the message is sent from triggers) become hang, I want to prevent this case and continue to operation, and the messages should queue and will continue to send to target service broker when it startup. Clarifications On Queue Service And Queue Readers

Jan 11, 2006

Hello,
This is info that I am still not certain about and I just need to make sure, my gut feeling is correct:

A.
When a procedure is triggered upon reception of a message in a queue, what happens when the procedure fails and rolls back?
1. Message is left on the Queue.
2. is the worker procedure triggered again for the same message by the queue?
3. I am hoping the Queue keeps on triggering workers until it is empty.

My scenario is that my queue reader procedure only reads one message at a time, thus I do not loop to receive many messages.

B.
For my scenario messages are independent and ordering does not matter.
Thus I want to ensure my Queue reader procedures execute simultaneously. Is reading the Top message in one reader somehow blocking the queue for any other reader procedures? I.e. if I have BEGIN TRANSACTION when reading messages of the Queue, is that effectively going prevent many reader procedures working simultaneously. Again, I want to ensure that Service broker is effectively spawning procedures that work simultaneously.

Thank you very much for the time,

Lubomir

Service Broker On The Same Database.

Jul 11, 2006

I'm trying to create a service broker on the same database...with one service and one queue. But my queue ends up with nothing in it. Here is the source...what's wrong?

Alter Database adventureworks set ENABLE_BROKER;

ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON DATABASE::[adventureworks] TO [SA];

create master key encryption by password = 'P@SSw0Rds';

CREATE MESSAGE TYPE CreateQBLetters VALIDATION = NONE

CREATE MESSAGE TYPE LetterResponse VALIDATION = NONE

CREATE CONTRACT BuildQBLetters (CreateQBLetters SENT BY INITIATOR, LetterResponse SENT BY TARGET)

CREATE QUEUE BuildLettersQueue with status=on

CREATE SERVICE CreateQBLetters ON QUEUE BuildLettersQueue

-- At this point, we can begin the conversation

DECLARE @conversationHandle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER

DECLARE @message NVARCHAR(max)

BEGIN

BEGIN TRANSACTION;

BEGIN DIALOG @conversationHandle

FROM SERVICE CreateQBLetters

TO SERVICE 'CreateQBLetters'

ON CONTRACT BuildQBLetters

-- Send a message on the conversation

SET @message = N'Hello World';

SEND ON CONVERSATION @conversationHandle MESSAGE TYPE CreateQBLetters (@message)

END CONVERSATION @conversationHandle

COMMIT TRANSACTION

END

GO

select * from sys.transmission_queue

select * from sys.conversation_endpoints

-- peek into the queue

select cast(message_body as nvarchar(max)) from BuildLettersQueue

GO

-- Receive a message from the queue

--RECEIVE CONVERT(nvarchar(max), message_body) AS message FROM BuildLettersQueue

-- Cleanup

DROP SERVICE CreateQBLetters

DROP QUEUE BuildLettersQueue

DROP CONTRACT BuildQBLetters

DROP MESSAGE TYPE CreateQBLetters

DROP MESSAGE TYPE LetterResponse

GO

-- you have to clean out the service broker first -- a conversation could be hanging around

alter database adventureworks set NEW_BROKER;

GO

DROP master key

go

Service Broker And Database Mirroring

Jul 24, 2006

I read the blog about service broker and database mirroring. Have you actually gotten this to work? I have a database that is mirrored. A third party vendor's software is using query notification which in turn uses service broker for dirty cache notification. Based on your blog I created a route specifying a mirror address.

CREATE ROUTE ServiceBrokerMirrorRoute AUTHORIZATION dbo
WITH SERVICE_NAME = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/Notifications/QueryNotificationService', BROKER_INSTANCE = '70D4070D-C739-43B3-9167-7156209F87BA', ADDRESS = 'TCP://10.128.183.210:5100',
MIRROR_ADDRESS = 'TCP://10.128.183.211:5100'

And then I tried to ALTER DATABASE SET ENABLE_BROKER but it fails with a

Server: Msg 9778, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create a new Service Broker in a mirrored database "mydatabase".
Server: Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

Is there an order to this should I have enabled servicebroker on the database and then mirrored it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Restore Database With Service Broker

Feb 15, 2008

I have a database that we have running service broker. Its a web based application hitting the database. Occasionally I need to restore the database in the development environment. Every time I trie to restore I have issues because there is a service broker connection. I have tried various commands to stop it, and usually after 20 minutes I finally get it to stop and not recreate itself.

Can anyone point me to an article or provide information on the best way to stop/prevent service broker so that you can restore a database?

It appears even when the broker is disabled on the database. How can I eliminate this error?

Thanks!

Service Broker Mirror Database

Feb 14, 2007

Hi

I tried to setup service broker to fail over to a mirror database. After the target database failed over, the message I send stays in sys.transmission_queue with no error in transmission_status. I check the mirror server log and I see the following.

An exception occurred while enqueueing a message in the target queue. Error: 15581, State: 3. Please create a master key in the database or open the master key in the session before performing this operation.

The database has the master key because its a mirrored database? Did I have to do something extra here

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Access Database Using Service Account

Jun 22, 2015

I'm trying to connect to a database using a service account that we got created. The ID is an AD account and was added to the db as such. When I try to connect to the database using the account with the password I get [login failed for domainid]. The DBA mentioned that its setup to use windows auth, however, I can't connect with this service account using windows Auth, due to I'm using to connect via code.

How can I connect to the database from my code using this ID?

I have the ID and pwd in my code to connect with, does the ID have to be setup differently in the Database?

Distributed Broker Queue Performance Issue

Aug 7, 2007

Hi,

We are doing a POC for transferring a huge number of messages(millions) from oner machine to another. The two approaches we are examining are MSMQ and SQL Broker. The MSMQ is set up as a remote queue on the target machine, and the source machine takes as little as 1 millisecond to send the message (using a .NET program). However, when testing on Service Broker, we find that the time taken to send message to the queue is significantly higher - like 70 millisecond. Could you please help us in understanding why this is happening?

The service broker distributed queues have been set up as per the directions in the posting at http://www.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/sindukuri/2797.asp

The source program (written in .NET) is calling a stored procedure in the source machine to write to the SSB queue. When we run SQL Trace, we find that the SP is responsible for 99% of the time taken. Here is our SP that send the message:
Declare @ConversationHandle uniqueidentifier
Begin Dialog @ConversationHandle
From Service SenderService
To Service 'ReceiverService'
On Contract SampleContract
WITH Encryption=off;
SEND
ON CONVERSATION @ConversationHandle
Message Type SenderMessageType
(<<XML String>>)

Please let us know if there are any additional settings required in the Service Broker to improve its performance. Or , what are the other approaches for building a distributed SSB application?

Architectural (broker) Place Of SQL Service Broker

Apr 5, 2007

Hi,

I am struggling with the position SSB could take in an SOA. If I would want a broker in the general sense, meaning an intermediary sitting between applications which exchange information through messaging, would SSB be a good candidate? I know Biztalk is probably the primary candidate, but in my scenario I would end up with Biztalk apps with empty orchestrations. Also, I think Biztalk is more expensive to manage. So I am looking for a lightweight broker for a simple SOA targeted at application interoperability, no fancy business processes in sight.

I look forward to some responses.

Kind regards,

Neeva

SQL Server Service Broker Examples

Jul 17, 2005

Recently there has been questions on some of the newsgroups about examples for SQL Server Service Broker. So, yesterday on a flight back to England I crofted up three different SQL Server projects as examples: LocalSampleRemoteSampleServer1RemoteSampleServer2
All three examples are jus your very basic €œHello World€? example, but they show: LocalSample €“ communication between two databases on the same SQL server instance. MasterKeys in a database and the database being TrustWorthyRemoteSampleServerX €“ These two samples are meant to run on two different machines/instances and in the samples you set up both transport security and dialog security by using Certificates.
Download the zip file from here [0], unzip and read the README.txt file, and €“ Have Fun!!

SQL SERVER 2005 Service Broker

Jul 23, 2007

Does SQL SVR 2005 Service Broker use connection pooling?

We are building a laptop application that will use SB to send messsages

to one SQL SVR 2005 instance. SQL 2005 Express will be installed on

each laptop and will be the "sender" to one SQL SVR instance, the "receipient"

It will be deployed to over 1500+ laptops. Each laptop will have a different

IP address.

Our SQLDBA wants to know if each of the laptops will use a different

connection when sending messages?

I answered "Yes", but another team member said "No".

What is the correct answer?

SQL Server Logging Of Service Broker Messages

May 2, 2006

I am writting a huge Service Broker Application. I notice that each message that is processed appears in the SQL Server Logs. Currently I am just testing with a single queue and tons of messages are showing up in the log. Is there a way that I can turn these informational messages off? I think in the end I may have something like 15 or 20 queues. These messages are very useful for debugging but I may not desire this extensive logging to be running all the time on all of my queues.
