SQL2K/Log Reader Fails With Error 9003 The LSN Passed To Log Scan Is Invalid

Hi All,
We have transactional replication between two SQL Server 2000, SP4 and database is in simple recovery.
Occassionally Logreader agent fails with error 9003 (The LSN (164051:119090:22) passed to log scan in database 'ReportDB' is
invalid).
But in April 2007 this error has occurred multiple times. We have opened the case with PSS in April 2007 but till now there
is no concrete solution.

Error details in ErrorLog:

From above error details it can be seen that sp_repldone is already called for LSN 164051:119090:22 (0x000280d30001d1320016)
which means it is distributed.
Since LSN is distributed, transaction log of publisher for that LSN can be truncated by checkpoint process. And afterward if
logreader issues sp_replcmds for that LSN, we will get 9003 error.
So, question is why Logreader is looking for LSN if that is already distributed.
When checked "DBCC Opentran", it also reflect oldest distributed LSN as 164051:119090:22.

We tried changing the recovery model to FULL but that has only delayed the occurrence.
Once we have noticed that LSN mentioned in Error 9003 was already backed up one day before. And we don't think replication latency to be more than 3 hrs
(maximum).

After PSS recommendation, we have applied the hotfix 2187 but error has occurred again after one month.
Other recommendation is to disable read cache of hardware controller to avoid stale read(that we are working on). Current
setting is 100% read and 0% Write.

Other Details:
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP4 with Hotfix 2187
Window 2000 Advanced Server.
RAID 5 with array controller as HP Smart Array 641 Controller

Please let me know if you have faced such issue and have any idea on this problem.

I can call the function:
exec EthnicityPivot '01/01/2007','09/09/2007'

and it works fine in SQL analyzer, but when I want to use it in Visual Studio in a new report I am getting this error
message:

There is an error in the query. Invalid length parameter passed to the SUBSTRING function. Incorrect syntax near ')'.

Anyone had similar error and sorted it?

Odd Error Upon SqlDataReader.Read() Invalid Length Parameter Passed To The Substring Function.

An application I developed normally works great, but it seems that when processing a certian record (and none of the others so far), SQL Server throws this error:
"Invalid length parameter passed to the substring function."

Here's the code in question:

orderConnection.Open()
orderReader = orderCommand.ExecuteReader()
setControls(orderReader)

...

Private Sub setControls(ByVal dr As SqlDataReader)
If (dr.Read()) Then '<--*******problem line*******

The SqlDataReader (orderReader) doesn't blow up or anything until I call .Read() (and, as mentioned, this problem only occurs for one order). What could be happening here?

Invalid Log Scan

I do not understand it but by connection to my database seems to keep crapping out. I get the below error and my app appears to be unable to access the connection. Then a couple restarts later it tells me that my login under my Windows User failed . The database is there and besides maybe a couple records longer there isnt anything corrupt about the data, and in fact, if I restart the entire PC most times it will allow me to connect again. I can even still access the data tables through the C# editor. Any idea why this error is being thrown?

Hi there when i tried to execute the following query in sql server

i will get the error like

If i remove -3 from there it works fine...

Since Installing SSRS I Am Getting Invalid Attempt To Depth When Reader Is Closed

Since installing Reporting Services on my machine, I have been getting an error whenever I try to execute a reader.read line.

When I ran the same exact code on another machine using someone else's credentials who did not have Reporting Services it ran fine. When I tried to run it on someone else's machine who did not have Reporting Services using my own credentials, I got the same error. Also, when the person who's pc and credentials worked fine on his machine ran the same code back on my machine using his own credentials, he got the same error. When another person who also had Reporting Services tried to run it on his own pc, he got the error as well.

When the reader is first executed (MyDataReader = sSql.ExecuteReader) these were the property values:
depth = 0
fieldcount = 5
hasrows = true
isclosed = false
Item = In order to evaluate an indexed property, the property must be qualified and the arguments must be explicitly supplied by the user.
recordsaffected = -1 (even though there are records)
VisibleFieldCount = 5

When the reader is loaded into a table (MyTable.Load(MyDataReader)) then the property values changed to:

Depth = {"Invalid attempt to Depth when reader is closed."}
FieldCount = {"Invalid attempt to Depth when reader is closed."}
HasRows = {"Invalid attempt to Depth when reader is closed."}
IsClosed= True
Item = In order to evaluate an indexed property, the property must be qualified and the arguments must be explicitly supplied by the user.
RecordsAffect = -1

And when I execute the the following code:

Since the code works with someone else's credentials on a machine that does not have SSRS, and the same problem happens for me regardless of what machine I am on as long as I am using my own credentials what could be causing my problem?

Hi,
I am new at sql 2000 and 2005, I have created a package in 2005 which I am trying to execute on a daily bases by creating a job. At first because of security issues the job would not execute. Hence, I had to create a credential and a proxy to run the job with sa account. Now it is giving me this error,
��SQLServer Error: 536, Invalid length parameter passed to the SUBSTRING function. ��
Through research I have no clue as what I need to do, or where to look.
The package runs without error when I execute the package itself.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fails With: Could Not Continue Scan With NOLOCK Due To Data Movement

We have a stored procedure that failed with: Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement

We are running with ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED. There are other jobs running, some of which might be hitting these tables (all using the ROWLOCK hint - though I know that's not guaranteed), however, this stored proc would not be going near the same rows. But even if they were, we'd be happy with either the before-look or after-look. This needs to be a low-impact job and should have minimal impact on ther other jobs, so we can't take out locks. Is there any hint we can use to do this? e.g. can we tell the query to just wait until the data has stopped moving then try again?

I copied the master's .ldf from Node 2. Now I get this error:

Error 9003 On SQL Server 2000

Hi guys,

I am having a little trouble with a SQL Server 2000 database and I would like some help. After failure and recovery of a hard disk my database is marked as suspect and I cannot get it to work again. I have tryed a few things such as copying the database and the log files to another computer and then running the attach command which returns the following "Error 9003: The LSN(12:32:1) passed to log scan in database 'dbName' is invalid.".

Upon getting this error I have tryed with failure attaching a single file, I have also tryed to create a new database with the same name in the same location as the original, then replacing the new files with my old ones, restarting the SQL Server and getting the database into Emergency Mode hopping to extract the data through DTS or BCP Utility, but I cannot access the objects nor the data.

I have also tryed to create a new database with the same name and replace only the ".mdf" file with my old one, but failed.

I would be gratefull for any help.

Error: 9003, Severity: 20, State: 1

Hi All,

I'm stuck with "Error: 9003, Severity: 20, State: 1" in MS-SQL Server 2000..I dont want to re-install the sql server ..since..i have other dependent s/w..!
I guess..the Master DB is corrupted....!!

When I tried to rebuild the Master db, i dont find the exe for rebuilding....it...!!

SQL Server 2000 Error 9003

Hi,

I had a total server crash and lost all data except mdf and ldf files for databases.

I need to attach these to a fresh installation but it is giving Error 9003 The LSN(XXX:XX:SS) passed to log scan in database "ABC" is invalid.

I have tried using Sp_attach both for single file and N file but same error occurs.

Is there any way to attach this to a database or atleast re-cover data ?

SSRS - Invalid Attempt To MetaData When Reader Is Closed On Render When Calling A Report From Asp.net

I get the following error when generating a report. I use the "render" method in an asp.net page. I have also seen Timeout errors, which is the second error listed below.

Configuration
db-SQL Server 2000 on clustered windows 2003 server SP1, 5.5 GB RAM
SSRS 2005 and IIS 6.0 on 2nd windows 2003 server SP1, 3.75 GB RAM
generating SSRS Report using asp.net
Error is on large amounts of data, main source table has 11.2 Million records. The stored procedure returns
507,387 rows in approx. 25 minutes.
No problem with smaller amounts of data using the same source of 11.2 million records, but returning
much less.

Urgent Help Required--Error: 9003,Severity:20,State:1.

Hi,

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000). When I restart the SQL Service, it fails to do so. I have tried running the service in command prompt & got the following error:

Error: 9003, Severity: 20, State: 1.
Cannot recover the master database. Exiting.

Kindly help as it is quite urgent & I can not afford to loose any data. Thanks.

Queue Reader Agent Fails To Start When Stopped Through Enterprise Menager

I've set up transactional replication with queued updating. If I stop the queue reader agent through EM, I can't start it again. Agent's history says "Queue Reader aborting. The step failed."

All servers are SQL Server 2000 SP3.

Help is greatly appreciated!

Could someone help me with my server. I could not start SQLServerAgent.

and have an error message:

An error 1068 - (The dependency service or group failed to start.) occurred while performing this service operation on the SQLServerAgent Service.

The startup account for both MSSQLServer and SQLServerAgent is on Local System Account.

And on the SQL Error Log I got:

SqlDataReader Reader Connection Closing Before Dt.Load(reader)

As you see in the images the connection is closing. During the read it counts 5 columns which is correct. When I step through the code it closes the connection when it hits dt.Load(reader) and nothing is loaded into the datatable.

Can Msdb From SQL2K Personal Edition Be Restored On SQL2K Standard?

The company for which I work did not have a DBA until I started a few weeks ago. Whoever installed SQL2K used the wrong CD so they have been running Personal Edition on their servers. I have installed a new SQL2K standard instance and have restored everything except the jobs and DTS packages. Can the msdb from the Personal edition be restored to the standard instance?

I'm getting the below error when attempting to copy a database. The view works just fine but the package keeps giving me the below error:

Error On Backup Scan With Nolock

Hi Guys,
Every time backup job backup the database or I manually backup the database I receive error message
[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 601: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement.

This is sql 2000 maintainance job or manual backup does same though actually backup of database does happen and I do have successfull backup but error also and older files are not getting deleted and job shows as failed in enterprise manager. Any idea guys
