Security Patch/Service Pack Questions

Sep 17, 2007

<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->

I posted this question before, and got a response about Windows Update. However, I work in a larger corp. and need to know if there are any other answers to this? We use a patch client that rolls out patches and service packs after we have tested them in our environment. What can we do to stay as up to date as possible for security patches?

How are security patches for SQL Server Express made available (e.g., as separate distributions or bundled into other Microsoft patch distribution mechanisms)? Are there specific procedures that I need to put in place to ensure that it gets patched on end user machines?

Service Pack Questions

Feb 8, 2008

We are currently on SQL server 2005 service pack 1 for our sql server installation here.

Our reporting services and the database services for the reporting is on one Server box.

The datasource used for the reporting is on a different server.

Since Microsoft support for sp1 is ending in April, I am planning to upgrade the server next month. However we are also planning to use a different server for reporting which may not be available by April.

My question is can I have the SQL Server which hosts the datasource on Service Pack 2, while the reporting services and its databases are on SP1? I don't want to spend time on upgrading a server that is to be retired if I don't have to.

Thanks
KR

??'s About Security Patch

Dec 28, 2001

I plan to apply the new security patch on my SQL 7.0 sp3 servers and get my SQL 2000 servers up to SP2 (which apparently already includes this)

But I was reading the Mitigating Factors in the announcement of this vulnerability and one reads as below:

"The effect of exploiting the first vulnerability would depend on how the SQL Server service was configured. SQL Server can be configured to run in a security context of the administrator’s choosing. (By default, it runs as a domain user). If best practices are followed, and the service is configured to run with the least privileges necessary, it would limit the worst-case damage an attacker could achieve. "

So my question is: What is the best practice for the SQL Server service and Agent service? Also are there resources for Best Practices?

Thanks!!

MS03-031 Security Patch Indexed View Bugs...

Jan 22, 2004

Hey!

Has anybody here had any issues with the MS03-031 security patch and SQL 2000 on Windows 2003?

We recently installed this patch on one of our test SQL 2000 machines, and the performance of queries running on this machine have gone up (gotten worse) by at least 10X.

We use indexed views and all queries are run with WITH(NOEXPAND) to force the indexed view to be used.

Anyway, after the patch was installed, the queries on the indexed view will ONLY use the clustered index, and not any of the other indexes, causing a Clustered Index Scan.

I removed the patch (well, re-installed SQL) patched it up to SP3a, and performance is back to normal.

Anybody experience anything similar?

SQL Security :: Default Login NT Service Required When Using Service Accounts?

Jul 9, 2015

I am currently hardening our SQL 2012 (with AlwaysOn Availability Groups) environment. Both the SQL service and agent account are using service accounts (only domain user). SQL browser service is disabled. Permissions to all roles are handled by using domain groups.

Currently a lot of (default) NT Service accounts are listed (some with sysadmin privileges). Are there accounts that can be removed?

Service Pack 3

Does anyone else have any concern about this Watson technology creeping in to SQL Server in SP3? I don't like it in Explorer and I'm sure not going to like it in SQL Server!

BTW, Forrest article about the new security patches at http://www.databasejournal.com/news/article.php/1475241 is in error, I think, when it refers to SP4.

ER For Service Pack....

May 12, 2004

I am binding bunch of SQL object change t/sql code into one service pack and then distribute to around 1500 databases.

gradually, I feel I need to put the table/proc/trigger/field/datatype/data size.... all the changes into a kind of database so that could let me or other developers quickly pull out all the change info against a particular object, say table customer. It may have changed 15 times already, from enlarge customerName data size from 30 to 50, add a unique constraint to force the customerName uniquenss, add an index on companyPhone field, modify a delete trigger when an customer becomes inactive to append to a historyCustomer table before delete it....

Of course, the db should also include servicePack release date, each object release reason, approved by.....

At first, it sounds simple and not a big deal, but when I draw something and found the relationship between table--field--datatype--size--constraint is not so simple. Is there something even 'raw' available there already, so I might take a short cut and move on?

thanks

Sql Service Pack 5.0a

Mar 24, 1999

Hi everybody,

I just installed service pack 5.0a on a server. While I was installing it,
when it came to the screen "updating system catalogs" it froze up and I had to reboot the machine.I could not get past this screen on successive attempts.
When I do Select @@version it gives me the correct version though.

is there a way to uninstall the sql service pack,or is there another way of finding out whether the service pack was correctly installed.

Thank You
Deepa
