Selecting Rows From Two Tables With JOIN And Ordering Problem

Hi,

First the environment: two tables A and B.

Table A: ID (unique-identifier)
Table B: ID_A (unique-identifier to A.ID, relation)

DTime (datetime)

Rows (id1 and id2 are Id examples):
A: id1
id2
B: id1 and 12:00:00 (date not important)
id1 and 13:00:00
id2 and 12:00:00

Example:
SELECT A.ID, B.DTIME
FROM A
LEFT JOIN B ON B.ID_A = A.ID
WHERE B.DTime < '14:00:00'
ORDER BY NEWID()

When I run this, I get the three rows of table B. But what I want is to get each table A row once, and get the nearest datetime of WHERE expression from the relation of table B.
So, the result must been two rows, id1 and id2, and id1 with '13:00:00' row because this is the nearest value of '14:00:00'.

How can I do this? DISTINCT trying by A.ID of SELECT, but doesn't work. Also ORDER BY B.DTime will work, but not random by NEWID() anymore.

Selecting Distinct Top 3 Rows From Database Using Join

Hi guys,

Just trying to select a set of Articles from a SQL Server Database. The Articles all have a Category ID which is stored in another table (as an Article could be in more than one Category). I want to select the Top 3 Articles in a Category. At the moment I have as my SQL;

"SELECT TOP 3 f.ArticleID, f.Heading, f.Summary, f.WrittenDate, f.ArticleURL FROM feedTable f LEFT JOIN Categories c ON f.ArticleID = c.ArticleID WHERE c.CategoryID=" + CategoryID + " AND c.ArticleID<>" + id + " ORDER BY c.CategoryID"

Which seems to work to an extent in that I do get three articles in the same Category appearing. However, there are sometimes duplicates appearing, so I need to incorporate a DISTINCT clause to the above. I'm not sure where to put this in though. Any ideas?

Creating A Left Join When Selecting From 3 Tables

I was wanting to know if it is possible to create a left join when selecting from 3 seperate tables.

Select p.Project_name, p.project_id, cp.email_display_name, te.Mon
FROM tblProject p, tblCorpPerson cp, tblTimeEntry te
WHERE p.Project_ID = te.Project_ID
AND p.Person_ID = @PersonID
AND cp.Person_ID = p.Person_ID


I need to return all rows from tblProject, and any matching project_id's from tblTimeEntry.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Join 3 Tables Getting Rows Repeating

I am using three tables/view.

The first is a vendor table where I am pulling company/ID/name

I am using a left join to the other two tables on company/ID

The problem I am having is if the second table has 8 rows and the third table just has 1 row it will repeat 8 times.

How do I show all 8 from the second table but only the 1 from the third table?

You can see below that the voucher number and amount repeat

Transact SQL :: Join Two Tables With Multiple Rows?

I have to join two tables and i need to fetch All records from @tab2 and only max date record from @tab1 that ID is present in Tab2

1.) @Tab1 have multiple records for each ID

2.) @Tab2 also have multiple records for each ID

3.) Kind of Lef Outer join those tables with ID and take all records from @tab2 and only Max of date from @tab1 and order by ID and Date

Note: @Tab1 always have lesser dates than @tab2 for each ID

Tables looks like as follows 

declare @tab1 table (id varchar(3), effDt Date, rate int)
insert into @tab1 values ('101','2013-12-01',5)
insert into @tab1 values ('101','2013-12-02',2)

I have this INNER JOIN that is fine to show all possible combinations. But I need to show only rows that have one or more Null values in tbIntersect.

Should I use nested LEFT JOINT? How?

Ordering Of Data Rows

It is one of the covenants of DBMS that data rows are retrieved in no particular order, and I have learned not to rely on that. However, I'd like to know under what circumstances could rows be returned, e.g., as a result of a simple query on SQL Server, not in the order they were stored. I have never seen this happen so far. I can't even test my sorting algorithms (on the data after it gets retrieved from the server) since it always comes already sorted. Naturally, I can always simulate this scenario (and I have) but this is kind of a "conflict of interest", I'd like to see "the real thing". Any ideas?

Ordering Rows For Contents

I have a series of records, that are displayed as contents in a .NET application,i know i can order the items to be dynamic, i.e I set the top item in the contents,
However I know this will get quite messy at the application level.

I would like to set up the default if I insert an item, into the table to make it the last in the list, select max(ordernum) + 1, i guess?

How can I set an on insert constraint, or what its called for this in SQL Server?

Union Two Tables With Relational Ordering / Grouping?

I have two tables with data that I need to get and display in a combobox. What I want to do is have the parent table listed in the combobox with all of its children indented. Sorted by parent then by child.

This SQL seems to be more complex than I have done previously

I can get all of the records from both tables easily:

INNER JOIN tblChildren as cc
ON cc.pID = pp.uiGUID
UNION (SELECT strName FROM tblChildren as c

However, this simply returns a list that is not ordered in any fashion. I'd like to have all of the parent's children shown under the parent name (there is only 1 parent per child and multiple children per parent)

I have situation where I get data from SRC Flat file and have to load Dimensional table and also fact table, using same data flow(have no other choice since I have to unpivot some src data). Since I have to load both tables in same data flow, I have to have a way to put load ordering constraint (I know informatica allows that). Does any one have any idea on how this can be done in SSIS?

I'm stuck. I have a table that I want to pull some info from that I don''t know how to.

There are two colomuns, one is the call_id column which is not unique and the other is the call_status column which again is not unique. The call_status column can have several values, they are ('1 NEW','3 3RD RESPONDED','7 3RD RESOLVED','6 PENDING','3 SEC RESPONDED','7 SEC RESOLVED').

i.e example, this is the existing data.

Call_id Call_Status
555555 3 3RD RESPONDED
235252 7 SEC RESOLVED
555555 7 3RD RESOLVED
325252 6 PENDING
555555 6 PENDING
325235 3 SEC RESPONDED
555555 1 NEW

This is the data I want...

Call_id Call_Status
555555 3 3RD RESPONDED
555555 6 PENDING
555555 7 3RD RESOLVED

The call_id could be any number, I only want the 6 PENDING rows where there are other rows for that call_id which have either 3 3RD RESPONDED or 7 3RD RESOLVED. If someone knows how it would be a great help.

I'm trying to write an SQL query for an application i'm writing to query a relational database.
The tables i'm trying to query contain foreign keys to other tables and these fields are optional.
my problem.....
Take the following tables as a simplified example

[TABLE1]
[PK] ID
Description
Date
[FK] Type_ID
-----------------
[TABLE2]
[PK] Type_ID
Type_Description
-----------------

Now the field "Type_ID" is optional in the first table and so by default is NULL.
So when I want to write a query that returns the related data stored in both tables that looks like this....
SELECT * FROM TABLE1, TABLE2 WHERE TABLE1.Type_ID = TABLE2.Type_ID and TABLE1.ID = @inputParam

But if the FK in TABLE1 is NULL then it will return no rows.

Is there a SQL Server SQL function that I can use to conquer this?

I want to get some combined data from both tables, so right now I am joining them at the SessionStartTime column, which is a primary key in the first and a foreign key in the second table, something like this:

The trouble is that this query, exactly as requested, gives me all the entries from the second table matching the first, while I really would like to pick just one row (preferably, the first chronologically - by ChTimestamp) so that the first column (SessionStartTime) has distinct entries in the resulting table. What would be the simplest way of doing that? Performance is not a big priority over simplicity since the first table could have only a few hundred rows (maybe a couple of thousand), while the second will be real tiny.

Hi,
I want to select the 8 most saled products from large orders table... the problem is that when i use the "distinct" sentence (something like this- "SELECT TOP 8 distinct id, products, productid FROM tbl_orders ORDER BY id") I get back the distinct of any columns.... (and any ID is distinct, of course), but if i don't include the id's in the distinct sentence, i can't order by id's.
 can i get the last orders, only by distinct product, and not by distinct id, and order them by the id's?

Im trying to write a stored procedure which i can stipulate the top number of rows it returns. I know i use the following syntax:

SELECT TOP 5

And i know i need to pass the number of rows i want as a variable to the stored proceudre like:


@Top as Integer

But when i try and do the following. SQL Server complains about the syntax:

SELECT TOP @Top

Can anyone advise me how i should be doing this?

Selecting Between Dates Getting More Rows?

I have two tables a stock table and a price table and I want to select the correct price for the Stock Date.

Problem is sometimes there is a promotion date in the price table between the live dates so the rows double up. Below is my sql but I get over 17,000 rows when it should be about 16,964.

In my real life situation I have unknown numeric data in field 2 but the principal is the same.

How do I do this?

Is it posible on a query ordered by employee name, for exemple, that MSSQL gives me a position of which employee is contained on the recordset?

that's my query (simplified)

Hi all -

is there a way to process a file x records at a time?

We have a table that I need to append to an existing table. The date columns are currently in char but must be converted to datetime for the existing table. The problem is I have bad data. There are 3 million rows where the date field isn't valid for SQL's datetime format. Since this is the data I have, I have to work with it. I would like for SQL to just insert a null if it comes upon a bad date. Currently when it encounters a field that isn't valid, it stops the process with an error.

I have tried to go around it below, but there is still something "hanging" I would like to be able just to insert one million rows at a time and if it errors, then I can look at the next million, find the error, fix it and continue on.

Any suggestions? Or if you have a better idea all together I would love to see it.
