SqlBulkCopy Instance Via SQLEXPRESS-ADO.NET 2.0-Visual C# Express: Security Was Unhandled?

Aug 28, 2007

Hi all,

I copied the following set of C# code statement from a website to learn the SqlBulkCopy instance via SQLEXPRESS-ADO.NET 2.0-Visual C# Express:

/////////////////////----Main.cs---//////////////////////

sing System;

using System.Collections.Generic;

using System.ComponentModel;

using System.Data;

{

public partial class frmMain : Form

{

public frmMain()

{

}

private void btnStart_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

{

String sourceConnectionString =

"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True";

String destinationConnectionString =

"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=SqlBulkCopySample;Integrated Security=True";

DataTable data = SelectDataFromSource(sourceConnectionString);

CopyDataToDestination(destinationConnectionString, data);

}

private DataTable SelectDataFromSource(String connectionString)

{

DataTable data = new DataTable();

using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString))

{

SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("SelectOrders", connection);

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;

connection.Open();

SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader();

data.Load(reader);

}

return data;

}

private void CopyDataToDestination(String connectionString, DataTable table)

{

SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping mapping1 =

new SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping("OrderID", "ID");

SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping mapping2 =

new SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping("ShipName", "Name");

SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping mapping3 =

new SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping("ShipAddress", "Address");

SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping mapping4 =

new SqlBulkCopyColumnMapping("ShipCity", "City");

SqlBulkCopy bulkCopy = new SqlBulkCopy(connectionString);

bulkCopy.BatchSize = 100;

bulkCopy.BulkCopyTimeout = 5;

bulkCopy.ColumnMappings.Add(mapping1);

bulkCopy.ColumnMappings.Add(mapping2);

bulkCopy.ColumnMappings.Add(mapping3);

bulkCopy.ColumnMappings.Add(mapping4);

bulkCopy.DestinationTableName = "DataMySqlBC1";

bulkCopy.SqlRowsCopied +=

new SqlRowsCopiedEventHandler(bulkCopy_SqlRowsCopied);

bulkCopy.NotifyAfter = 200;

bulkCopy.WriteToServer(table);

}

void bulkCopy_SqlRowsCopied(object sender, SqlRowsCopiedEventArgs e)

{

MessageBox.Show

(String.Format("{0} Rows have been copied.", e.RowsCopied.ToString()));

}

}

}

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above project in my local PC (with Adiministrator previlidge/use) that is in our LAN/Network system and I got an error: SecurityException was unhandled - Request for permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'failed. First, I have a question: is this problem related to the remote connection to SQLEXPRESS? Second, I do not know how to solve this problem. Please help and answer my first question and tell me how to solve this problem.

Thanks in advance,

Can't Start SQLEXPRESS So That I Can't Install Latest SQLEXPRESS Security Updates.

Mar 13, 2007

I can't start SQLEXPRESS.

The SQL ERRORLOG shows: Error is 3414, Severity 21, State 2 and says: "An error occurred during recovery, preventing the database 'model' (database ID 3) from restarting." Just prior to this, I get a warning: "did not see LP_CKPT_END".

Any thoughts why this might be and how I can fix this?

Embedded SQL Server Express Deployment - Unhandled Exception: Database Already Exists

Mar 7, 2007

Good Afternoon.

I am trying to write a short application within which I would like to embed a SQL Server Express database, all of which would be deployed via ClickOnce through a web site. The installation process seems to be working without trouble, including installation of the .NET Framework 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005.

When the application launches on the new machine, however, I get a big Microsoft .NET Framework "Unhandled exception" error dialog box that indicates the database already exists and that the database file could not be attached. I am working with a clean virtual machine that I know has never had the database installed on it.

I fear I am overlooking something quite straightforward, but since this is the first time I have ever attempted to build a data-bound application, I am not sure where I am going wrong.

Perhaps the source of the problem, or a related problem, might be revealed even when I run the application in debug mode from within Visual Studio. I can run the application once, but if I try to run it again, I get an error when I try to open the database connection that is similar in content (database already exists...could not attach). I can run the SSEUtil and detach the database and then run the application again in debug mode and it works no problem (the first time!).

Lastly, if I install the application on the machine on which it was developed and make sure the database is detached, it will run without any trouble (even repeatedly). But, on a new blank machine, there is no database listed that matches my database name, so I cannot try to detach anything!?

My apologies for such a novice question!

Connecting SQLExpress && Visual C# 2005

Nov 13, 2006

Hi

I have started to create a databse using SQL Server Management Studio Express, just a few tables, one with data. I now want to creat a some windows forms to populate the tables. However when I try to use the Add New Data Source wizard, I get an error when I try to create the connection string, but I have managed to connect to a copy of AdventureWorks located in the same parent directory.

Error is :
Unable to open the physical file "...". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)".
An attemp to attach an auto-named database for file ... failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

As I can connect to AdventureWorks, I presume Windows thinks the file is open, but I have no idea why, how to check, or how to close it.

TIA

Connecting Visual Studio To Remote SQLExpress

Mar 3, 2007

Hello all,

I've been trying to find an answer to this to no avail. I'm not even sure if its possible. I like to do development at home in addition to work, like most of you do. Since it is my home computer, I like to play games, so I try to keep applications to a minimum. I would like to install sqlexpress on a virtual machine (which I have successfully done), and I can connect to it via Management Studio on my local machine (non-vm). Is there a way to set visual studio to use this connection as opposed to local host? I really do not want to load sqlexpress on my local machine and have yet another thing tying up system resources.

Your feedback is appreciated.

SQLExpress, User Instance And Detach

Feb 17, 2006

Basically I need to know how to detach a db from a user instance of SQL Express from inside a VS2005 windows forms application.

The application is project oriented and the design calls for each project to be stored in its own separate .mdf file. When the user wants to switch projects the application will detach the current database and attach a different one, containing the data for the desired project.

I have this working fine with the default (.SQLEXPRESS) db instance, but I am having a problem getting the code to work with a SQL Express user instance (also part of the specification).

I am using the SMO library to do the Detach, and this works fine with the default instance, but for the user instance I am unable to connect to the necessary (user) instance of the db server.

I have tried selecting the instance name from dm_os_child_instances on the default instance and using the dynamically generated instance name to create the Server object. I get a good instance name, but when I create the Server object, the connection fails. I have also tried issuing "sp_detach_db" on the user instance, but this fails because the db is in use.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Can I Connect To SQLExpress Instance Using (local)

Feb 19, 2007

Hello,

I am using the following connection string to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my local PC.
string sqlstr = "Server=(local);Database=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Trusted_Connection=False";

And it gives me the following error. The string works fine in computer with SQL Server 2000 instance but fails with 2005. The string also fails for "Server = localhost".
However the string works very fine if I use the name of Server 2005 i.e ./SQLExpress

===================================

Cannot connect to (local).

===================================

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

------------------------------
Error Number: 2
Severity: 20
State: 0

------------------------------

Now the main problem is that, of course I could use a named instance, but since I am embedding the Connection String in a dll file so that any user can use it to connect it to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 installed in his/her computer, I need to use "server = localhost". Doesn't SQL 2005 support this. If yes, where could i find option to enable it?

I have enabled every option available in surface area configuration for SQL Server 2005, but nothing seems to help out. I even use local as well as remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
Can nyone help me out?

Can't Connect To SQL Server 2005 In Visual Studio, Only SQLExpress Works?

Jul 8, 2007

Hi all,I'm having a big problem here. I can't seem to connect to a database of MSSQL Server 2005... Here is what I've did:1. Under the Server Explorer>Data Connections. Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. Click on the "Advanced" button, and change the default DataSource from .SQLEXPRESS to .MSSQLSERVER. Click OK5.  Received this error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. This is frustrating because I can't get the Membership provider, login to work on my host. Please help. Thank you very much,Kenny.

Getting Up And Running With Visual SQL Server 2005 Express And Visual Web Developer 2005 Express

Apr 11, 2006

I've downloaded and installed both of these (VWD installs both) and have been trying to run through the walkthrough of setting up a web application which supports membership. However, no matter what I do I invariably get errors like the following:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I'm concerned why VWD and VSQL express versions don't run correctly out of the box (so to speak). I'm not an expert on configuring these services -- but that's the point of offering these tools to hobbyists: So we can learn about how to make some of these great applications using MS tools.
My configuration::

Windows XP SP2 -- clean machine as of about a month ago, never had any dev tools, web servers, or the like on it.

IIS is installed and the service says its running

VSQL and VWD express versions installed (no errors on installation)

SQL server service indicates it is running

.Net 2.0 framework installed (no errors on installation)

Note: I've tried installing on two separate machines. Obviously I'm missing something fundamental.

Would someone please help me go through the million things I [apparently] need to do to configure all these tools so I can get on to actually coding up my first web application? If this is documented somewhere, all I can say is I tried to find it but it certainly wasn't obvious.

What happens when you install a SQLEXPRESS instance on a machine that already has SQL Server 2005? Will the SQLEXPRESS still run in the limited mode or will it sense that an full standard version of SQL Server 2005 is already present and just "upgrade" itself?

On the otherhand, how do I "upgade" an existing instance of SQLEXPRESS to a full version of SQL Server 2005 standard edition without uninstalling and installing the standard edition. If I have both the instances then will the SQLEXPRESS be freed from its limits?

The Configuration Of The AdminConnectionTCP Protocol In The SQL Instance SQLEXPRESS Is Not Valid

Mar 4, 2006

Hello,

I am getting the following warning in the Application Event Log:

The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid.

The warning is logged by the SQLBrowser service.

This is happening on Windows 2003 server with SQL Server Express 2005. On the same machine SQL Server 2000 is installed.

I am currently unable to connect from remote clients to the instance of SQL Express and I believe it has to do with this warning (I've tried all the usual remote connection troubleshooting without success - enabled protocols, SQL Browser Service running, there is no firewall on the server, I disabled firewall on the client when trying to connect).

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

If you need additional information please let me know.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
 Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
 When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
 Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Analyst Modeling Using Visual Studio (BI Workbench) And AS DB With Security Restrictions

Nov 30, 2006

Hello--

A question has come up around the following situation where a number of analysts will building data mining models in a specific analysis services databases.

- There is one AS DB for each modeling "project" and the analysts assigned to work on the "project" are grouped together in Windows Security Groups.

- The analysts are only allowed to access the AS DB for their project. To support this security model, we've implemented scripts to create the AS DB for the "project" and then a Role is created within the AS DB called "Administrator" and the members of this role are the members of the corresponding Windows Security Group.

The AS DB, role and membership are created by a machine "admin". After the AS DB is created, it appears that the only way an analyst can build models using Visual Studio (Business Intelligence Workbench) in the AS DB while maintaining the security model is to do the following:

- Run Visual Studio (or BI Workbench)
- Select File -> Open -> Analysis Services Database, then specify the database that they have access to.

In this "online" modeling environment, things are working fine. The question is -- is it possible for an analyst to create an Analysis Services Project in Visual Studio and "bind" it to already-created AS DB? This doesn't appear to work, but I may be missing something.

Thanks,
- Paul

The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?

Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

SQL Security :: How To Change IP Address Of Clustered Instance

May 7, 2015

In our lab we have 2 clustered instance of Sql server 2018R2 as follows

Virtual Server Name
 IP SqlVir 10.1.1.6
SqlVirDr   10.1.1.12

The Data is SqlVir is replicated manually every day to SqlVirDr.

We had to change the Virtual Server name of SqlVirDr to SqlVir so that all dot net applications accessing SqlVir could continue to access the database without changing the application string.

For that purpose I deleted the computer name SqlVir from the domain and its IP 10.1.1.6 from DNS. Then I went to the failover cluster manager of SqlVIrDr right clicked the Sql services selected the properties and changed the DNS name from SqlVirDr to SqlVir.The applications then could access the data.However when I changed the network IP address from 10.1.1.12 to 10.1.1.6 the Sql services was found to be down.

Perhaps the procedure I followed in deleting the computer name from domain and the IP from DNS was wrong.What exactly is the steps that I should follow to achieve the above objective.

Help:SQLExpress User Instance Fails For Normal User; Works For Administrator

Jan 22, 2008

I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.

Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.

As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.

For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.

I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.

Can anyone help me with this?

Judy Fraser
