Tables And Underlying Views W/ Access Data Projects

Dec 3, 2001

I don't know if there is a fundamental problem with what I am trying to do, or am I just having problems setting it up correctly:

I have a SQL server multi-user database. I want my users to connect to this databsase via Access 2000 Data Project. No problem there. The database consists of one main table and several views (based on the office branch that the user works from). For example there is a Chicago view, an Atlanta view, etc. that all extract different records from the same underlying table. I need my users to have FULL ACCESS (select, update, delete) to their respective VIEWS, but they cannot have access to the underlying table. I've tried several configurations and I'm beginning to think that this may not be possible... is that the case?

If it is not possible to grant access to views but not the underlying table, then what are my other options? The objective is to have a multi-user table that each user "owns a piece of" without being able to see the tables or records belonging to their peers. Do I need to setup a table for every office, and somehow link those tables into one main table? How would I avoid duplicate records being entered into the separate tables? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this problem has had me stumped for weeks.

Access Data Projects

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I wanted to know if Access Data Projects is a good option to choose fora SQL Server Database Frontend. The other option is C#.The database will be accessed by multiple users (around 100 users) on aLAN. ADP looks viable coz the users are used to working on a MS accessdatabase. Please post your replies with reasons as to why you think your choiceof f-end is betterCheers!

Access Data Projects Uniqueidentifier Problem

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I am designing a SQL server backend, MS Access (ADP) frontendapplication and I came across an interesting problem.Lets say I have a table T with the following fields(columns)[a] (int Not Null, Primary key, Identity auto increment)[b] (uniqueidentifier, Allow Nulls)[c] (text)When I open the table in datasheet view using Access and type a valuein [c], [a] and [b] get populated automatically. [a] getting filledwith incremental integers is understandable. But, I have not set theISRowGUID or a default value for [b] and still it gets popullated witha random GUID. If I use SQL Server enterprise manager to enter datainto the table T, [b] does not get filled and stays Null. I forgot tomention that there are no relationships between the tables yet.Is it MS access that is responsible or is it me? In any case cansomething be dont to prevent this? Also should there be something elsein relation to this that I have to look for in the future. My bestIbrahim M

Comparing Data In Tables/views.

May 13, 2008

I am looking for an efficient mechanism to compare data between 2 tables/views.

Rationale:
I use a proprietary tool to data transfer between 2 databases. The tool itself uses Microsoft SSIS (integration service) to transfer data. I want to make sure that the data is transfered properly. Both the source and target database are not live database. The source and target database are in seperate servers.

Triggers On Tables Underlying A Partitioned View

Jul 23, 2005

We have a partitioned view with 4 underlying tables. The view and eachof the underlying tables are in seperate databases on the same server.Inserts and deletes on the view work fine. We then add insert anddelete triggers to each of the underlying tables. The triggers modifya different set of tables in the same database as the view (differentthan the underlying table). The problem is those triggers aren't firedwhen inserting or deleteing via the view. Inserting or deleteing theunderlying table directly causes the the triggers to fire, but not whenthe tables are accessed as a result of using the view.Am I missing something? The triggers are 'for insert' and 'fordelete'. No 'instead of' or 'after' triggers.

Analysis :: How To See Underlying Tables And Joins Of A Cube

Nov 12, 2015

I have to write a report using SSRS using a cube somebody (no longer here) created.  I know SSRS and SQL very well, but have never worked with cubes.

I want to make sure the cube was properly constructed (in terms of table/join relationships).  I cannot find the tables/joins.  I looked in SSMS under Data Source Views and everything else I could think of (or google).

Is it possible I don't have permissions?

Recovery :: How To Backup Raw Data Only With Just Views And Tables

Sep 23, 2015

My client has on a physical server (A), the following:

1. MS SQL Server 2008R2
2. MS SQL Server (Reporting Server)

The data base is backed up fully daily to another physical server (B).

What the client would like to do is:

1. Backup just the Raw SQL Data with Tables and Views to Server B every 10 mins

Point to be noted is, there isn't any dedicated storage (NAS or SAN) just local disk storage on the server.

The reason for this is they want to run reports against this data every 10-15 mins...

How and what do I need to do to facilitate this?

How To Migrate Data From Sybase Views Into Tables

Oct 8, 2015

Is it possible to get SQL Server Migration Assistant to read data from a Sybase view and store it in a SQL table.  My problem is that I have a legacy sybase application that is being decomissioned and I have been asked to migrate the data into SQL Server.  The problem I have is that:

The account I have been provided to connect to the Sybase database does not have select privileges on all the tablesI don't have the sa password for the Sybase database to alter the security. The vendor support contract has expired and it does not appear I have any way to get the sa password

The account I've been given has access to query data in several views even though it does not have access to the underlying tables that the view pulls data from.  Since this is a legacy application whose data is now static, I wonder if it's possible to read the data from the Sybase views and dump it into SQL tables.

Help With Partitioned Views Or Updating Data From Multiple Tables

Mar 16, 2008

Hi All,

My database's design is set out here. In summary, I'm trying to model a Stock Exchange for a Technical Analysis application written using Visual C++. In order to create the hierachy I'm using a Nested Set Model. I'm now trying to write code to add and delete equities (or, more generically, nodes) to the database using a form presented to the user in my application. I have example SQL code to create the necessary add and delete procedures that calculate the changes to the values in the lft and rgt columns, but these examples focus around a single table, where as my design aggregates rows from multiple tables using UNION ALL:

Code Snippet
CREATE VIEW vw_NSM_DBHierarchy -- Nested Set Model Database Hierarchy
AS
SELECT clmStockExchange, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblStockExchange_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmMarkets, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblMarkets_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmSectors, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblSectors_
UNION ALL
SELECT clmEPIC, clmLeft, clmRight FROM tblEquities_

Essentially, I'm trying to create an updateable view but I receive the error "UNION ALL View is not updatable because a partitioning column was not found". I suspect that my design in wrong or lacks and this problem is highlighting the design flaws so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Access 2003 Projects As Front-end?

Aug 8, 2005

We use SQL Server 2000 on the back-end of our directory web site and ASP on the front end which works fine. However, for my own uses (since I don't create the asp and have to pay a programmer), would it be better to set up an Access 2003 project for my own data entry forms, standard reports and quick searching?

What would be the negatives of this approach. Remember, this is just for me.

Thanks in advance,

Access 2003 Projects Don't Work With SQL2005

Apr 25, 2008

Hi All,

Just installed a new version of SQL2005 on a brand new Application Server.

However, when i fired up Access 2003, it gives me some chaos about how Access isn't compatible with SQL2005. Fantastic lack of backward compatibility straight out the box.

Ok, so I do as it says and download all the updates.

Try again... Still won't allow me.

Wen't to Control Panel > Data Sources and confirmed the Native Client is in there. Added a System DSN for the new Server.

Tried Access again, still not working?? What the...

Why can't I create a new project in Access 2003, and edit it from my desktop instead of sitting on the server for every table modification? I hate designing tables on the SQL studio.

Any clues or help would be great. I'm just disappointed at the moment, on how this is holding up my database projects.

Thanks,

Chris.

Stored Procedure Doesn't Recompile After Replication Updates Underlying Tables

Mar 21, 2007

We have on demand snapshot replication set up between 2 servers. When the subscriber applies the snapshot, our stored procedures start executing very slowly. Updating statistics and rebuilding indexes does not resolve the problem, however; executing sp_recompile on the affected stored procedures does fix the problem. Is this a known issue with replication? Is there a better workaround than manually recompiling stored procedures after every snapshot?

Can No Longer Access Report Manager - The Underlying Connection Was Closed: An Unexpected Error Occurred On A Receive.

Apr 11, 2008

Hi,

For a long time I've had SQL Server 2000 with RS on a Server2003 machine.
When I want to publish a report from my Dev box, I remove anon. access on the Production machine, deploy the report, then go into report manager to tweak a couple of parameters. I then re-enable anon. access so users can continue.

Yesterday, I removed anon. access and deployed the report but when I went into Report Manager I received the above error message... "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive."

I can get into report manager with anonymous access enabled, but I don't have authority to do anything.

What's happened!!!? More importantly, how do I fix it?

Editing Underlying Boolean Data Without Making Cells Editable

Oct 5, 2007

I'm having a real hard time coming up with a solution to this problem.  I created a custom gridview control from Dino Esposito's "Extending Gridview" article which autogenerates a checkbox column that allows for multiple record selection.  Once a user checks a box, the entire row gets selected.  I added a dropdown list on the top of the page that has only two options, "Yes" or "No".  What I'm trying to do is update a boolean column called "contract" (I'm using the Pubs sample database) for all selected rows (via checkboxes checked) depending on whether the user selects "Yes" or "No" from the drop down menu.  For example,1)  the user selects "No" in the dropdown2) The user checks all rows in the checkbox column for which he wants the  all the values"contract" field set to "No"3) The user then clicks on a button called "Submit" and all selected records get updated to "No" under the "contracts" column.  The idea is to allow the user to change the boolean values from a field for multiple records.  Hence, making individual cells editable is pointless.  Anybody have an idea how to go about this?

Sharing Data Flows Between Projects

Nov 29, 2007

We receive data files from different external customers, and these files have identical layouts.

I'm planning to set up a package for each customer. Each package will contain a flat file source -> OLEDB transformation dataflow, (followed by other customer-specific data flows).

What I'd like to do is just create this dataflow once, parameterising the flat file and table names. Is it possible to include this dataflow in each customer package so that if the flat file layout changes, I can just modify the connection managers in the one place, and then recompile each package to pick up the changes?

Any advice appreciated.

Data Access To Large Tables In Sql 2005

Mar 1, 2007

hi all,

i have a large table in sql server 2005 (it has about 6 columns and 10 million records).

i need to work in a linear way on all the records (i know it sounds dumb but i need to work on all records).

now, obviously when trying to work on this table sql server get stuck for timeout or something like that...

i've noticed that a simple function like "select top 100 * from ExportTable" still works.

is there any way to have sql send me the data when it access it so that i'll still be able to proccess it on the same time, i basically work using dataset so that fixing the timeout wont be helpfull since windows probably wont allow me to load this amount of data into memory.

can any1 help?

Data Access :: Combining Tables Of 2 Separate Databases For ODBC Use

Apr 29, 2015

Currently we have one customer database containing various tables. As part of requirements for a new client, we need to manage their data in a totally separate database. The tables and structure are exactly the same but we would be loading data into a separate database.

I am looking for a way to combine tables with the same name in each database when I run queries, rather than having to query each database separately. Currently we actually have many queries set up in MS Access which use an ODBC link to query the data off SQL server. I am aware it is possible to apply a UNION SELECT in Access from 2 separate ODBC connections, but this is extremely slow.So my initial question is - is there a way to provide access to the tables from both databases over the same ODBC link? If this cannot be done over ODBC I guess we can consider more "modern" methods, but ideally we want to keep this in MS Access as that is where our existing queries are based. I was hoping that some kind of view can be treated as an ODBC connection.I mentioned ideally we want to keep the reporting queries in MS Access.

Data Access :: Retrieve Schema Information Of Columns Of Tables

Sep 10, 2015

Till recently we were using the following code to retreive schema information of columns of tables

Dim schemaTable = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( _
System.Data.OleDb.OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns, _
New Object() {Nothing, Nothing, tableName, Nothing})

Now instead of getting the name of table (which i was using as param for filtering) i'm going to receive a sql-query. Now my question is if I were to get a query like the following :

SELECT
[EmployeeID],
[Title] + ' ' + [LastName] + ' ' + [FirstName] AS FullName,
[BirthDate],
[Address],
[City] + ', ' + [Region] + ', ' + [Country] + ' - ' + [PostalCode] AS FullAddress
FROM [dbo].[Employees]

Then how can I retrieve the schema information of only the columns present in the query.

(Its possible that i might get a query with multiple tables with joints)...

Views Vs. Tables

Aug 24, 2000

Are views used for securiry reasons, such as restricting access to certain columns/rows or is there performance advantages to using views. There is disagreement in my dept.

I created the following view PAYACTIVE:

Select * FROM PAYMENTS WHERE STATUS = 'ACTIVE'

The PAYACTIVE view contains 260 rows. The PAYMENTS table contains over 2 million rows. I executed the following commands:

Select * FROM PAYACTIVE

Select * FROM PAYMENTS WHERE STATUS = 'ACTIVE'

They seem to take the exact same amount of time. In other words, selecting from the view seemed to not help performance. Am I conducting a valid test?

256 Tables In Views

Aug 30, 2005

I have a SQL script that I attempted to write into a view. If I run the script in SQL Query Analyzer it works perfectly. When I attempt to run execute as a view I receive the following error message: "[MS][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] The query and the views or function in it exceeded the limit of 256 tables."

My objective is to use the recordset from the view to create a crystal report but have been unable to replicate the "query" effect directly in crystal. (unfortunately I am also a new crystal user)

All my searches have been fruitless. I remember seeing something about SQL Server 2000 supporting 1000 tables and older versions supporting 256 in an Access forum but have not been able to find that thread a second time.

Any provided solution would be greatly appreciated. (I am getting tired of hearing the "gears" in my head grinding. Is smoke from the ears normal?)

Why Would Tables Pulled In From ODBC In Access Be Different Than Tables In SQL 2005 Tables?

Jan 24, 2008

I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.

I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!

So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?

Thanks,
Keith
