Tool To Write RDL For Sql Server Reporting Services

Nov 20, 2005

We've just rolled out Reporting services at our organisation, and the users love it. However, it's giving me a headache because, as the only developer in the company and as I have VS.NET, I'm the only one who can author the reports.

Does anyone know of a third party provider that has written a report writing tool with a straight forward UI ( a bit like the access report writer for example) that I can deploy to some users and let them run riot? It's the kind of thing that I expect someone will have done as a pet project, if anyone knows of a freeware version that would be even better.

I'd be very grateful for any pointers.

Thanks

Reporting Services ReportServer DB Reporting - 3rd Party Tool ?

Jan 15, 2007

HI There

We are required to gather certain information regarding reporting services.

Which reports were requested, by whom , how long did they run for, what parameters were passed etc etc.

I see that the system tables do provide some of this information, is there a 3rd party tool or something we can use to gather all this type of information for us?

This is for reporting services 2000 and 2005.

Thanx

Reporting Services Configuration Tool

Jul 11, 2007

Hello all

I am trying to configure reporting services using the Configuration Tool. I get all checks green except for Encryption Keys (Blue), Initialization (Grey), and Email Settings and Execution Account (both Yellow). I am not too worried about the yellow and blue ones because I have read that other people have the same, but I was wondering how to make Initialization available to configure. I am running SQL Server 2005 - Standard Edition.

Thanks for the help,

Reporting Services :: Report Designer Tool Box Items Missing

Aug 10, 2015

I have a project with SQL sever reports in it. During a test upon returning to the VS 2013 Professional interface, the tool box area still had the previous information displayed and never returned to what should be there for the report design tools.I restarted VS, and the toolbox no longer looked like it did before. Specifically, the datatable tool among others was missing. I was unable to "refresh" the datatable after making changes to it.

I opened other Reports in design mode, and the tools did not show up for those either. The Report Items in the toolbox does contain things like Pointer, Text Box, Line and so forth.

Reporting Services :: How To Write Custom Legend Text

Oct 23, 2015

I was trying to write a custom legend text for a chart that I have in SSRS. In the chart I have a Bar chart and a Line chart. I have two values coming from a dataset. One is a running value. All the series values are from year dataset.

I need to get a custom legend text for the three data series looking like this. "2013- Mth", "2014-Mth". Year should be dynamic and coming from the dataset.

I tried writing an expression in the series legend option as shown below.

But I don't get the required text for the chart. I only get the default series text for the legend. If I only write a text without the dynamic year taken from the dataset columns I get the custom text. But not when I concatenate the dynamic year series with the static text. Any property to enable/disable?

SKUUPGRADE Of Reporting Services Fails With Could Not Write Rssrvpolicy.config

Aug 10, 2007

Hi,

I'm using the System Center Essential 2007 VHD (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91061). It has an SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services installed as a named instance, SCEVHDSCE. I tried to upgrade the SQL Server to Enterprise Edition, because some of the reports are not working in Express. I started the setup with the SKUUPGRADE=1 switch, it found the SQL Engine and Reporting Services components and offered to upgrade them. Upgrading the SQL Engine was successful, however the Reporting Services failed with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.4Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

I checked the file, it exists and the current account (which is a domain administrator) has permissions. I stopped all services which could use the reporting services, rerun the setup now only for reporting services, but the same error occured. For the third try I started Filemon also, and it captured the following trace.
http://mit.bme.hu/~micskeiz/files/sql-rs-install-error.jpg
From this I guess the following: until row 442 it checks the existense of the target folder and creates the folder for the upgraded instance in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.4. In step 443 probably it wants to copy the old config, but it searches them in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2 folder, which should be the location of a default reporting services install. However, the setup of System Center Essentials installs its SQL Server Express Reporting Services in C:Program FilesSystem Center Essentials 2007Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2, thus the setup fails because it is looking for rssrvpolicy.config in the wrong folder.
Do I see the problem correctly?
The setup log can be found here: http://mit.bme.hu/~micskeiz/files/SQLSetup0005_SCEVHD_RS.log

I tried to do a command line install, but I did not found a switch to tell the old location of Reporting Services. Neverthless I tried the following command:
D:>start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=RS_Server INSTANCENAME=SCEVHDSCE UPGRADE=RS_
Server SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb
But the setup said that the requested component could not be found.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Zoltan

Query/Reporting Tool For SQL Server Tables

Oct 6, 2005

Just a general question about any recommendations for a third party tool that would allow setting up a data-dictionary against SQL Server tables and a user could go in and build their own queries, reports. Perhaps they could save their query/report definitions for reuse. Other nice to haves - ability to output to PDF and export to XLS. Would prefer web interface, but can consider desktop as well. Any immediate recommendations?

Thanks.

Looking For A Db Schema Read/write/synch Tool

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,I'm relatively new to the database world so please forgive me inadvance for my ignorance. I have recently been tasked at my job withfinding a tool that will perform the following tasks: 1) extractschemas from a db, 2) produce a difference report between schemas fromtwo databases, and 3) synchronize two schemas. The purpose is forproduct upgrades during which an existing database schema will need tobe synchronized with a baseline schema. The tool must support the following database vendors (versions givenin parenthesis): Oracle (8i/9i), Sybase (12.x), Informix (9.x), MSS2000, and IBM DB2 (7/8).I have spent the last several days downloading and researching avariety of tools such as Aqua Data Studio, DbVisualizer, DBExplorer,DBDiff, and AdeptSQL. I thought it would be a good idea to post amessage to a few database newsgroups and ask for any recommendationsdatabase developers may have.So if anyone has any recommendations on such a tool or softwarepackage, I would greatly appreciate any information. Thanks!Chad Smith

XML Output For A Reporting Tool

Feb 17, 2004

I put a similar post on experts-exchange....

What I am looking to do is create a reporting framework that uses SQL Server and outputs as XML (only because that could be consumed by various clients).

I also want to create title, subtotals, etc., and even page breaks of I can.

I want to do this all in T-SQL so new reports can be added by DBA's rather than have the developer re-code, re-compile, re-distribute, etc.

I think on the DB side it would be as easy as creating a table that is a 'catalog' of available reports with their names, etc., and a set of stored procs that would run the reports.

Has anyone ever done anything like this, or in some better way?

Thanks.

Looking For SQL Agent Reporting Tool

Apr 3, 2001

I'm looking for a tool that can read the SQL Agent tables and generate a chart or graph of when jobs are scheduled. This could be used to determine when a job can be scheduled without interfering with other jobs, or to determine
where a maintenance window might exists.

The chart could be for a particular day, or week or month. It could be for a single database or all databases on a server. The tool could also read job history and display a graph of execution time (with success and failure displayed in different colors).

I don't know of anything like this in existence. I've looked at the stored procs supplied with SQL Server that help generate the data for the Enterprise Manager's GUI. I see thinks like the job schedule frequency information hardcoded in the stored procedure, instead of table driven. That's scary!

SQL Probe software is cool, but it doesn't do the reporting I'm looking for.

Migrate From 32bit 2000 Reporting Services To 2005 64bit Reporting Services

Mar 22, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)

It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?

Any help is appreciated

Compatibility Of SQL Express Reporting Services With SQL 2000 Reporting Services

Dec 6, 2006

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.

One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:

Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?

Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Reporting Problems W/ MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step By Step To MS

Apr 26, 2007

I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:

select * from vProductProfitability

where year = 2003 and

MonthNumberOfYear = 1

The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.

I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.

This humble grasshopper seeks wisdom.

Respectfully Submitted,

Reporting Services :: Localization Data In Reporting Services?

Jul 27, 2015

I work in a big project and we will begin in using reporting services as the base technique for reports and I will be responsible for this part. but I have a problem I will discuss in the following:

Currently: We use currently devexpress reports and we have 2 languages(Arabic and English). the data in tables saved in two ways (Arabic and English). when the end user change the language of the web site the report data language changed when run it.

Example:

we have table with (ID, NAME_AR, NAME_EN, JobTitle_AR, JobTitle_EN). designed report will display(ID, NAME_EN, JobTitle_EN) . but the end user change the language of the system the report will

dispaly(ID, NAME_AR, JobTitle_AR)

Hint:this done pragmatically

how to do this in reporting services.
