Transact SQL :: Alter Table To Rename Column Name With No Space
Oct 27, 2015
I want to alter my all tables to change the name of all columns.
I need this because all column names were created with space and I want to remove the space for future work .
For example – In Table Customer there is a column name [Cust_Id ] and I want to change it with [Cust_Id]

I have created a table as below mentioned. Then I want to alter the ID column as identity(1,1) without dropping the table as well as losing the data.
create table dbo.IdentityTest
(
id int not null,
descript varchar(255) null,
T_date datetime not null
)

As I understood, if SPARSE is used on a column, which have many NULL marks, then the storage could be efficently used (we need less spaces to save NULL marks, hence a table which has many NULL marks with SPARSE property needs less storage than the same table, but without SPARSE. I created two table as follow:
/******* Table with Sparse ******/CREATE TABLE Sprstb(
unsprsid INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
Firstname varchar(20) NOT NULL,
Lastname varchar(20) NOT NULL,
Tel int NOT NULL,
adress nvarchar(60) SPARSE NULL)/***** Table without Sparse*******/CREATE TABLE Unsprstb(unsprsid INT IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,Firstname varchar(20) NOT NULL,
Lastname varchar(20) NOT NULL,
Tel int NOT NULL,
address nvarchar(60) NULL)
I have populated the Sprstb with 5 Milion records. It needs 509,961 MB storage. Then I have copied this table into Unsprstb
SET IDENTITY_INSERT [dbo].[Unsprstb] ON
Insert [dbo].[Unsprstb](unsprsid,Firstname,Lastname,Tel,adress)
SELECT unsprsid,Firstname,Lastname,Tel, adress FROM [dbo].[Sprstb]
SET IDENTITY_INSERT [dbo].[Unsprstb] OFF
The Unssprstb need only 466,031MB !
That means the Table with SPARSE column need more storage, Why?
By the way, in table Sprstb column address has 1666198 Null mark (from 5000000)

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]
[Name]
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?
I am trying to solve the question in the link below:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2093921&SiteID=1
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.
I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...
ALTER TABLE #CTE
ALTER COLUMN
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;
I have also tried:
ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

My client's website database is hosted by a third party. I need to alter one of the column definitions for the largest table in the database. Unfortunately, the transaction log fills up if I try to alter the table. I've done all the usual stuff like truncating the log, etc., but the simple fact is that the operation requires more log space than we have available. Therefore, we need to purchase additional disk space for the database.
What I'm looking for is a way to roughly estimate how much log space will be required to alter this table so that we purchase enough but not too much additional space. The table has an identity primary key and 4 other single column indexes: one int, one datetime and two varchar(30) columns.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have a table with ~30M records. I'm trying to add a column to the existing table with default value and have noticed following ... When using alter with default value- (Executes more than 45 min and killed forcefully)
ex:
ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT CONSTRAINT DF_Table_X_is_Active DEFAULT 'FALSE' NOT NULL
GO
When using update command after adding column with alter (without default value) it completes is 5 min.
ex:
ALTER TABLE dbo.Table_X Add is_Active BIT NULL
GO
UPDATE Table_X SET is_Active = 0 WHERE is_Active IS NULL
GO
Why there is so much of difference in execution times ? I was just trying to understand internal behavior of the SQL in these two scenarios.

There is a table exists in a database name tbDatabaseProviders.
I want to alter this table to add a column DatabaseProvider Also I want to add a default constraint so if nothing than 1 should be added.
Remember, the table already exists so when I write the script query then I want to first check the constraint if it exists then I dont want to add the constrait otherwise I will add it.
I was having problem to first add a constraint with the constraint name so I could find the constraint before finding it if it already exists.
What should I do the above.

Hi I’m trying to alter a table and delete a column I get the following error. The object 'DF__Morningst__LastU__19EB91BA' is dependent on column 'LastUpdated'.
ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN LastUpdated failed because one or more objects access this column. I tried deleting the concerned constraint. But the next time I get the same error with a different constraint name. I want to find out if I can dynamically check the constraint name and delete it and then drop the column. Can anyone help.IF EXISTS(SELECT 1FROM sysobjects,syscolumnsWHERE sysobjects.id = syscolumns.idAND sysobjects.name = TablenameAND syscolumns.name = column name)BEGIN EXECUTE ('ALTER TABLE tablename DROP CONSTRAINT DF__SecurityM__DsegL__08C105B8')EXECUTE ('ALTER TABLE tablenameDrop column columnname)ENDGO

In SQL Server 2005,here are two tables, created by the following SQL Statements:
CREATE TABLE student(
ID CHAR(6) PRIMARY KEY,
NAME VARCHAR(10),
AGE INT
);
CREATE TABLE score(
ID CHAR(6) PRIMARY KEY,
SCORE INT,
FOREIGN KEY(ID) REFERENCES student(ID)
);
For the length of Column ID is not enough, So I want to alter its length.The alter statement is:
ALTER TABLE student ALTER COLUMN ID CHAR(20)
For the table student is referenced by table score, the alter statement can not alter the column of the table student, and the SQL Server DBMS give the errors.
But, I can manually alter the length of the column ID in SQL SERVER Management Studio. How to alter column length of the master table(student) along with the slave table(score)?
Thanks!

ALTER TABLE table_x ADD col3 VARCHAR( 10 ) NOT NULL AFTER col1 ;
In sql server all i can do is to add the column to the end of table. Is there a way to insert a new column in the middle or to move a column to left/right?

Is there anyway through T-SQL to add a new ColumnC *between* ColumnB and ColumnD.
ALTER TABLE TableA

In MS SQL Server, I have the following tables with some data in it.create table table1 (column1 varchar(32),column2 int not null,column10 varchar(255),.....primary key (column1, column2),);create table table2 (column1 varchar(32),column2 int not null,column20 varchar(255) not null,....foreign key (column1, column2) references table1(column1, column2));Now, I need to change the all column types from varchar to nvarchar tosupport internationalized character set.I am able to do so, for columns column10 in table1 and column20 oftable2 without any problems by using command:"alter table table1 alter column column10 nvarchar(255);"But, when I try the similar thing for column1 of table1/table2, amgetting one error message saying like: "ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN failedbecause one or more objects access this column". I guess, this iscoming because of foreign key relationship between the tables.NOTE: While defining the table2, for foreign key I have not specifiedanything like "on update cascase" ...etc.How can I resolve this issue? Any suggestions/solutions are reallyhelpful to me. Thanks in advance.

So my purpose is that I want to fix the table size of those tables(log tables) and want to move records in other database table placed on another location. So my database has no problem.
is there any way to make such above steps which I want for my database?
