Multiple Tables, Inserts, Identity Columns And Database Integrity

Apr 30, 2008

Hi all,
I am writing a portion of an app that is of intensely high online eCommerce usage. I have a question about identity columns and locking or not.
What I am doing is, I have two tables (normalized), one is OrderDemographics(firstname, lastname, ccum, etc) the other is OrderItems. I have the primary key of OrderDemographics as a column called 'ID' (an Identity Integer that is incrementing). In the OrderItems table, the 'OrderID' column is a foreign key to the OrderDemographics Primary Key column 'ID'.
What I have previously done is to insert the demographics into OrderDemographics, then do a 'select top 1 ID from OrderDemographics order by ID DESC' to get that last ID, since you can't tell what it is until you add another row....
The problem is, there's up to 20,000 users/sessions at once and there is a possiblity that in the fraction of a second it takes to select back that ID integer and use it for the initial OrderItems row, some other user might have clicked 'order' a fraction of a second after the first user and created another row in OrderDemographics, thus incrementing the ID column and throwing all the items that Customer #1 orders into Customer #2's order....
How do I lock a SQL table or lock the Application in .NET to handle this problem and keep it from occurring?
Thanks, appreciate it.

Transact SQL :: Select And Parse Json Data From 2 Columns Into Multiple Columns In A Table?

Apr 29, 2015

I have a business need to create a report by query data from a MS SQL 2008 database and display the result to the users on a web page. The report initially has 6 columns of data and 2 out of 6 have JSON data so the users request to have those 2 JSON columns parse into 15 additional columns (first JSON column has 8 key/value pairs and the second JSON column has 7 key/value pairs). Here what I have done so far:

I found a table value function (fnSplitJson2) from this link [URL]. Using this function I can parse a column of JSON data into a table. So when I use the function above against the first column (with JSON data) in my query (with CROSS APPLY) I got the right data back the but I got 8 additional rows of each of the row in my table. The reason for this side effect is because the function returned a table of 8 row (8 key/value pairs) for each json string data that it parsed.

1. First question: How do I modify my current query (see below) so that for each row in my table i got back one row with 19 columns.

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B

If updated my query (see below) and call the function twice within the CROSS APPLY clause I got this error: "The multi-part identifier "A.ITEM6" could be be bound.

2. My second question: How to i get around this error?

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*, C.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B,  fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM6,NULL) C

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Windows 7 desktop.

Transact SQL :: Compare A Table Against Multiple Tables

Jul 16, 2015

I downloaded a day's worth of data into a single table first and named it as Full_Day_Data_Table.(10,000 records)

Later for some other purpose, downloaded the same day's data into five small tables.

Now when I compare the total row count of  Full_Day_Data_Table vs Sum of row counts of five small tables, the row count does not match.

So, I would like to know the records that exists in Full_Day_Data_Table and not in small tables.

Transact SQL :: Find Unmatching Columns Between Two Tables While Applying A Change Column Prefix Table

Nov 16, 2015

For our ETL process, we maintain a TransformationList table that has the source view and the destination table. Data is copied from the view into the table (INSERT INTO). I am trying to find column names in the Views that are not column names in the associated Table.

In the below example, want to end up with three records:

 1, View1, Column4
 2, View2, Column4
 2, View2, Column5

I have it almost working, except that there is a table, ChangeColPrefix table, that is used by the ETL process to change some of the view's column name prefixes. Some of the source views have column names with prefixes that do not match the destination table column names. Say view SouthBase has all the column names prefixed with SB - like SBAcct, SBName. And the Destination table of Area District has ADAcct, ADName. There would be a row in the ChangeColPrefix for SouthBase, SB, AD, 1, 2 that would be used by the ETL process to create the INSERT INTO Area District From SouthBase.

I need to use this ChangeColPreifx to find my unmatching columns between my source views and destination tables. With out that table SBAcct and SBName from SouthBase will not appear to match the columns of ADAcct and ADName, but they do match.

I want to end up with these three records as non-matching:

View1, Column4
View2, Column4
View2, Column5

View1 has Salumn2 and View2 has Salumn5, and they must be changed to Column2 and Column5 as per the ChangeColPrefix table before running the Select from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS EXCEPT Select from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS looking for unmatched columns.

/***** Set Up Test Data *****/
-- Create 2 test views
IF EXISTS(SELECT * FROM sys.views WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[View1]'))
DROP VIEW dbo.[View1]
GO
CREATE VIEW View1
AS SELECT '1' AS Column1 , '2' AS Salumn2 , '4' AS Column4;

[Code] ....

Tables Joined On Multiple Columns, Exclude Records Found In Table A

Nov 7, 2006

I'm using SQL server 200

Table A has columns CompressedProduct, Tool, Operation

Table B in a differnt database has columns ID, Product, Tool Operation

I cannot edit table A. I can select records from A and insert into B. And I can select only the records that are in both tables.

But I want to be able to select any records that are in table A but not in Table B.

ie. I want to select records from A where the combination of Product, Tool and Operaton does not appear in Table B, even if all 3 on their own do appear.

This code return all the records from A. I need to filter out the records found in Table B.

SELECT ID, CompressedProduct, oq.Tool, oq.Operation FROM OPENQUERY (Lisa_Link,
'SELECT DISTINCT CompressedProduct, Tool, Operation FROM tblToolStatus ts

JOIN tblOperation o ON ts.OperationID = o.OperationID
WHERE ts.ToolID=66
') oq

SQL 2012 :: Split Data From Two Columns In One Table Into Multiple Columns Of Result Table

Jul 22, 2015

So I have been trying to get mySQL query to work for a large database that I have. I have (lets say) two tables Table_One and Table_Two. Table_One has three columns: Type, Animal and TestID and Table_Two has 2 columns Test_Name and Test_ID. Example with values is below:

**TABLE_ONE**
Type Animal TestID
-----------------------------------------
Mammal Goat 1
Fish Cod 1
Bird Chicken 1
Reptile Snake 1
Bird Crow 2
Mammal Cow 2
Bird Ostrich 3

**Table_Two**
Test_name TestID
-------------------------
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_2 2
Test_2 2
Test_3 3

In Table_One all types come under one column and the values of all Types (Mammal, Fish, Bird, Reptile) come under another column (Animals). Table_One and Two can be linked by Test_ID

I am trying to create a table such as shown below:

Test_Name Bird Reptile Mammal Fish
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Test_1 Chicken Snake Goat Cod
Test_2 Crow Cow
Test_3 Ostrich

This should be my final table. The approach I am currently using is to make multiple instances of Table_One and using joins to form this final table. So the column Bird, Reptile, Mammal and Fish all come from a different copy of Table_one.

For e.g

Select
Test_Name AS 'Test_Name',
Table_Bird.Animal AS 'Birds',
Table_Mammal.Animal AS 'Mammal',
Table_Reptile.Animal AS 'Reptile,
Table_Fish.Animal AS 'Fish'
From Table_One

[Code] .....

The problem with this query is it only works when all entries for Birds, Mammals, Reptiles and Fish have some value. If one field is empty as for Test_Two or Test_Three, it doesn't return that record. I used Or instead of And in the WHERE clause but that didn't work as well.

Transact SQL :: COUNT And SUM Of Multiple Columns

I'm using only three of the columns in the table and basically am grouping results based on different criteria. The three columns are PWSID, Installation and AccountType. I have to Provide the PWSID column with a count of the total number of installations per PWSID, also a count of AccountTypes per PWSID. I have the following query, but the numbers aren't adding up and I'm not sure why. I'm falling short in the total count by around 60k records.

There are records like:

3   Will  Hugh
3    Walter Heisenberg

Transact SQL :: Sorting By Minimum Of Multiple DATETIME Columns

Apr 22, 2015

I have a view in my database detailing the expiry date of each credential for each employee. The view is designed as to display one record per employee and in that record is the expiry date of each credential and the days remaining. So the columns are as follows:-

Employee CodeExpiry Date (x8 columns) (named as credential e.g. [Passport])
Days Remaining (x8 columns) (named as "TS_" + Credential)

I'm trying to use the CASE function to compare each DATETIME column with one another and retrieve the minimum. How can I return the minimum date as a run-time column and sort the view by this column? My code is as follows:-

SELECT [Passport],[TS_Passport],[Visa],[TS_Visa],[Civil_ID],[TS_Civil_ID],[KOC_Pass],[TS_KOC_Pass],[JO_Pass],[TS_JO_Pass],
[Ratqa_Pass],[TS_Ratqa_Pass],[Driving_License],[TS_Driving_License],[Health_Book],[TS_Health_Book], CASE
WHEN Passport <= Visa AND Passport <= Civil_ID AND Passport <= KOC_Pass AND Passport <= JO_Pass AND

[code]....

I've been told that this is the most efficient given the number of records in my database. The Min_Date is always NULL. I need the minimum of the 8 dates to be the Min_Date.

005    11547    1          15.23       0.00        0.00
005    11547    3          0.00         245.50    0.00

And I want to obtain this result:
ID1     ID2        Value1     Value2     Value3
005    11547     15.23       245.50    279.23

Sum Columns From Multiple Tables

May 5, 2012

I have several tables that I need to sum up a colomn and display the results. I have been struggling with this for some time. Here are my Tables and their columns:

Ingredients_tbl
IngredientID
Description

Inventory_tbl
IngredientID
AmountRemaining
Renconciled
Active

Order_Details_tbl
IngredientID
OrderAmount
Status

Order_Details_Details_tbl
IngredientID
OrderAmount
Status

I want to display all the ingredients from the ingredients table, sum the amountremaining of the items that are reconciled = 'false' from the inventory_tbl, sum the orderamount from both the order_details_tbl and Order_details_details_tbl for each ingredient based on status. Here is some sample data and results I am looking for:

Ingredients_tbl
IngredientID -- Description
1 -- Corn
2 -- Beer
3 -- SBM
4 -- Wine

Inventory_tbl
IngredientID -- AmountRemaining -- Reconciled
1 -- 500 -- False
1 -- 500 -- False
1 -- 100 -- True
1 -- 500 -- False
2 -- 1000 -- False
2 -- 1000 -- False
4 -- 500 -- False
4 -- 500 -- False

Order_Details_tbl
IngredientID -- OrderAmount -- Status
1 -- 100 -- ORDERED
1 -- 100 -- MIXED
1 -- 100 -- DELIVERED
2 -- 100 -- ORDERED
3 -- 100 -- ORDERED
3 -- 100 -- ORDERED
3 -- 100 -- ORDERED
4 -- 100 -- ORDERED
4 -- 100 -- DELIVERED

Order_Details_Details_tbl
IngredientID -- OrderAmount -- Status
1 -- 100 -- ORDERED
1 -- 100 -- DELIVERED
1 -- 100 -- DELIVERED
2 -- 100 -- ORDERED
3 -- 100 -- ORDERED
3 -- 100 -- ORDERED
4 -- 100 -- ORDERED

I would like the results to be like this:

IngredientID
Description
Inventory = Sum of AmountRemaining of the records in Inventory_tbl where Renconciled = 'false'
Production1 = sum of OrderAmount of the records in the Order_Details_tbl where Status = 'ORDERED' Or Status = 'MIXED'
Production2 = sum of OrderAmount of the records in the Order_Details_Details_tbl where Status = 'ORDERED' Or Status = 'MIXED'

IngredientID -- Description -- Inventory -- Production1 -- Production2
1 -- Corn -- 1500 -- 200 -- 100
2 -- Beer -- 2000 -- 100 -- 100
3 -- SBM -- 0 -- 300 -- 200
4 -- Wine -- 1000 -- 100 -- 100

I thought this was going to be as easy as a few simple joins and aggregate sum on the colomns like this:

SELECT Ingredients_tbl.IngredientID, Ingredients_tbl.Description,
Ingredients_tbl.LowInventory, SUM(Inventory_tbl.AmountRemaining) AS Inventory, SUM(Order_Details_tbl.OrderAmount) AS Production1, SUM(Order_Details_Details_tbl.OrderAmount) AS Production2
FROM Ingredients_tbl
LEFT OUTER JOIN Inventory_tbl ON Inventory_tbl.IngredientID = Ingredients_tbl.IngredientID AND Inventory_tbl.Reconciled = 'False'

[Code] .....

But this obviously has its issues with incorrect returned sum values.

Transact SQL :: Comparing Two Tables By NOT NULL Cells In Different Columns

Oct 22, 2015

We have two tables:

Table1
Servers|Databases|Users|Names
Server1|Database1|User1|Name1
Server2|Database2|User2|Name2
Server3|Database3|User3|Name3
Server4|Database4|User4|Name4
Server5|Database5|User5|Name5

Table2
Servers|Databases|Users|Names
NULL    |Database1|NULL |Name1
NULL    |NULL        |User1|Name2
NULL    |NULL        |NULL |Name3
Server5|Database5|NULL |NULL

I need to check Table1 by Table2 only on NOT NULL cells and if all of them in the row match do not return that row as the result. In this case it will be:

Results:
Servers|Databases |Users |Names
Server2|Database2|User2|Name2
Server4|Database4|User4|Name4

I used query like this:

SELECT a.Server, a.Databases, a.Users, a.Names FROM Table1
EXCEPT
SELECT ISNULL(b.Server,c.Server), ISNULL(b.Databases,c.Databases), ISNULL(b.Users,c.Users), ISNULL(b.Names,c.Names) FROM Table2 AS a, Table1 AS c

But for many rows (like 100 000) it takes ages to get results, any better way to work on this?

Transact SQL :: SELECT From Multiple Tables

Jul 13, 2015

I have the following two tables....

tblTimeEntry
-entryID
-entryDate
-entryUser
-entryJob
-entryTask
-entryWeekNo
tblWagesWeeks
-weekID
-weekDay
-date

I want to select all of the date and weekDay values from tblWagesWeeks for a specific weekID. I also want to show all entries fromtblTimeEntry for the weekID when a record exists. If data does not exist in fromtblTimeEntry I want to display a blank entry but still need weekDay and date from tblWagesWeeks.
