Unable To Connect To SQL Server On Client With WinForms App

Nov 27, 2007

Hi,

I have a Visual C# WinForms app which I am accessing a SQL Server 2005 database with. On the Server, I have allowed remote connections (TCP and named pipes) and enable SQL Browser as per instructions on MSDN. The app works fine on the development machine.

Server name is <machine name>SQLEXPRESS, connecting with Windows Authentication.
Server log states that it is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 3153].
Server named pipe provider is ready to accept connection on [ \.pipeMSSQL$SQLEXPRESSsqlquery ].

On the client (local network), when trying to open the database I get this error still:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Also on the client, I can go into the ODBC Data Source Administation, and connect to the SQL Server Database that way successfully.

What further steps can I take to allow the client to access the SQL Server?

What SQL Server Version Should I Use To Develop On And Install On A Client Pc For A Winforms App?

Nov 30, 2006

Hi all,

I've finally received my first official assignment using vb.net and SQL Server.

I have been developing / learning with both on the express editions.

I've also just run into some issues trying to access a SQL Server 2005 Express .mdf thru
SQL Server 2005 Pro.

We just couldn't get it to open. Connecting or Attaching etc...

We had to install SQL Server Express on the other PC to get it to open the SQL Server 2005 Express .mdf.

---

Now that I am ready to develop in ernest, I would like to setup my own controlled development environment.

Our target is a winforms application with a SQL Server 2005 Database for WinXP or Vista.

I'm ready to purchase Visual Studio 2005 Pro once I figure out the best development environment and SQL Server Version.

Specifically, once I've developed my winforms app, what issues do I need to consider to install a SQL Server 2005 database server / engine on a client / users machine?

Can I use the SQL Server 2005 Express?
Or perhaps there is an MSDE equivilant for 2005?

I can't seem to find any info regarding installation procedures for SQL Server in this regard.
(Perhaps its because I'm using the express editions?)

Any positive contructive help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Barry G. Sumpter

Unable To Connect To SQLEXPRESS From A Client In A Workgroup (Error 40)

Jul 11, 2007

Hi to everyone!

Here is my problem: I have SQLEXPRESS running with Windows Authentication on a "server" PC named "ASUS1", and I need to connect from a "client" PC named "Presario1", user "Mauro", connected through a peer network (I use a cross-over cable); both PCs belongs to the same workgroup named "RMT-WORK", and they can see each others shared folders without problems.

I have installed the connectivity components + Management Studio Express on Presario1, and enabled named pipes and TCP/IP protocols; then I've got SQL Browser running. I have also added the Login "Guest" on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS.

When I start Management Studio Express on Presario1 and browse for servers I can select "ASUS1" as database engine but when I try to connect I receive "Error 40: could not open a connection to SQL Server" (same result using SQLCMD); I have tried to add on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS a user "Presario1Mauro" with "CREATE LOGIN [Presario1Mauro] FROM WINDOWS" but I receive a "Windows user not found" error...

Can anyone help me?

Unable To See Data From Oracle Client Through SQL Link Server

Feb 5, 2007

Hello,

I was hoping someone had this problem and has a solution... :)

Some background info:

SQL 2005 Enterprise x64

Windows 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise (clustered)

Oracle client 10.2.0.3 (latest as of 2/2/07)

The issue I'm having is I have a link server setup within SQL 2005 connecting to a Oracle 8 database server. The Oracle client I'm using is 10.2.0.3 (latest version from Oracle). From the SQL 2005 server I'm able to query the remote oracle server through the link server I had setup if I query the table directly. If I perform a query to a view on the Oracle server I'm able to see the colum names, but not the data. This only happens when I'm using the Oracle client, if I use the MS client for Oracle it works fine OR if I use SQL Plus.

Now, you're probally asking, why not just use MS's driver... Well, I would If I could, but Microsoft hasn't provided a 64 bit driver for Oracle which I need to create the link server in SQL.

Any help would be appreciated.

When I go into visual studio 2005 on the client to try and connect to te server vs cannot see the server at all.. the only server that displays is the client computer(which isn't a server??) I know there is a valid connection between the two computers because I login to the server using remote access..

Also, I have enabled TCP in the SQL server configuration program..

I wonder is there any beginnger guides on how to get the whole show up and running??

Thanks..

How To Connect The Client To Server On A LAN?

Sep 12, 2007

Another newbie question...

I've got SQL Server Express installed on a server. Now I need to provide a method for the clients to know where the server is.

When using Access, I launched a dialog and the user navigated to the mdb file on the server. It worked fine.

It seems using SQL Server I just need them to select a computer to connect to. Or can it happen silently?

SQL Server Unable To Connect... Please Help

Jan 14, 2000

I upgraded my 6.5 server to 7.0 two days ago running into small problems with the database upgrade wizard. I had some small problems with security which took me some time but was not that difficult once I figured it out. I then proceeded to switch back to 6.5 mode to transfer all the data that had been done that day to my development machine so I could then import it to the SQL 7.0 version. When I was done with the transfer I switched back successfully, started the server successfully, but I was unable to connect. I get the error "Connection could not be established...", so after several attempts to connect and shuting the server down I now am at a loss. The server runs fine in 6.5 mode but it will not connect in 7.0?? Tonight I am going to try to reinstall SP1, if that does not work I am going to try to reinstall SQL 7.0. Any suggestions???

Unable To Connect To Server

Nov 14, 2000

On a fresh installation of SQL Server 6.5, I have
opened the EM and registered the server but am unable
to connect. I get the error of 'A connection could not
be established to [ServerName]- [DB-Library] Unable
to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist.
General Network Error. Check your documentation.'

I've tried connecting with all different DB-Lib settings
to no avail. Ultimately, I want to use TCP/IP. I am,
however, able to connect to other SQL Server boxes from
this EM, just not the local server. I am able to stop
and start the services from Control Panel and from SQL
Service Manager.

Since I haven't been able to log into the local SQL Server,
I've registered the server in EM to log in with sa and a
blank password. I've already completely uninstalled SQL
and reinstalled it to see if that would help. It didn't.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Thank you!
Toni

Unable To Connect To Server

Hi,

I am running SQL 2000 on Windows 2000 Server. The clients are running different OS ranging from Win 98/NT/2000. Although i am able to connect to the local host, but whenever i try to connect over the network the following error pops up :

unable to connect to server <server name>
Server : Msg 11, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Socket]General network error. Check your network documentation.

I checked up the event long on the server and found the following entry:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSSQL$NETSDK
Event Category: (8)
Event ID: 19011
Date: 1/20/2003
Time: 2:12:32 PM
User: N/A
Computer: <computer name>
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 19011 ) in Source ( MSSQL$NETSDK ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event:
(SpnRegister) : Error 1355.

May i further clarify that this error started today n till last week end (saturday, i am

stationed in India) there was no problem and the users were able to connect to the server

without any problem. My network engineer feels that its an sql problem and has nothing to do with network related issues.

i would appreciate if anybody could help me out. thanking in advance

Unable To Connect To Server

Aug 2, 2001

From my Win98SE box with MDAC 2.6sp1, I can't connect to SQL (win2k, sql2k).
I've tried everything I know but nothing works.

I always get the following error:
Unable to connect to server 192.168.1.2
ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC Sql Server Driver] Timeout Expired

some additional info...
- both computers are in a workgroup, not in a domain.
- this is a home network and they're connected via a Linksys cable modem router
- another box on this same lan can connect to sql just fine, although it's
running win2k.
- all boxes have identical DSN, Subnet...settings
- I also installed Jet4.0sp1 just in case, but that didn't help either
- I'm primarily trying to connect via TCP, although I have tried Named Pipes
as well
- i can ping both boxes from each other just fine
- odbc ping fails

MDAC has worked beautifully for me for the last several years. Did MS
change something recently...or is there another problem?

Thanks, Andre

Unable To Connect To Server

Oct 25, 2005

Hello. I am very new to SQL Server. I've tried to look through other posts on the forum but did not find the solution I needed. Please help.

I have SQL Server running on Machine1 which I am able to connect to. What I want to do is connect to this server through a Machine2 that is on my network.

Both Machines run on WindowXP Professional

On the server of Machine1, I have:
1. Under the security tab, I have created a New Login using SQL Server Authentication (general tab), checked all server roles (server roles tab) and checked to permit all databases (in the database access tab)
2. On the server, went to properties -> security tab and allowed for SQL Server and Windows authentication

On Machine2 when I try to register the server of Machine1 through the Register SQL Server Wizard, I am able to see the server. However, when I use the newly created Login Name and password (from step 1 of above). I get a Login Failed for user message. When I try to connect to the server through Query Analyzer I also get an unable to connect to server message (Server: Msg 18456, Level 16, State1)

What else do I need to configure to make it work?

Thank you!

UNABLE TO CONNECT TO SERVER

Jul 20, 2005

If you place an image of your server on a rebuilt server, rename it andchange the SID. You get an error message “UNABLE TO CONNECT” when youuse the SQL Query analyzer on a desktop computer to connect to theserver (hosting the image). If you add the server (hosting the image)to the Windows2000 server domain/active server and restart the server(hosting the image), you get the following error message: "YOUR SQLSERVER INSTALLATION IS EITHER CORRUPT OR HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH (UNKNOWNPACKAGE ID). PLEASE RERUN SETUP."Wouldn't you think changing the name, the sid and adding it to a domainwould be enough to access it. I even created a new ODBC connection.*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!

Server is unable to connect to server 'SERVER1'. (New Publication

SQL Server replication

There is the only local instance of the server on local computer and 'SERVER1' is actual name.

How Do I Connect Client Machines To SQL Server 2005 Installed On A Windows 2003 Server

Apr 11, 2008

I am new to SQL server 2005

Windows 2003 Server and all client PCs are all on the same network. I installed SQL 2005 std version on windows server 2003 and created a database and tables in it.

I have two users, who want to connect to SQL server 2005 from their PCs (they have windows XP):

These are two things that I need to facilitate:

1) They want to be able to write queries using Query Designer and run from their PCs.

2) I created an MS Access database on my PC, I want to use Access database as a front end to the SQL server database. I will create queries, forms in Access DB, and I want to be able to get the data from SQL server Database to do this. I guess I can use ODBC to connect to tables in SQL server database.

3) I want to connect SQL server to Oracle database, and run oracle stored procedures. I want to load the results of oracle stored procedures into SQL server database tables. I guess I will use IIS for this.

Any suggestions are appreciated, especially with item number 1.

Unable To Install Native Client Components In SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Version

Dec 14, 2007

Hi all,

I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition ISO from the following site and burned it onto a DVD.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en

Prior to this I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edtion. During setup I have selected all the native client components i.e. Management Studio, Business Intelligense Studio. But after the install I am not able to see them under All Programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On further searching I have come across this link

http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=142941

First of all, there is no sqlrun_tools.msi under setup folder of the dvd. And also when I tried to change component from Add/Remove programs and following the instructions as specified on clicking Change Installed components all that I see are: Connectivity Components and Software Development kit.

Could someone tell me how can I install Management Studio/ Business Intelligence Studio seperately? I don't want to go through the process of re-installation.
