Unable To Retrieve Data From A Source CSV File That Contains Embedded Text Qualifiers

Apr 2, 2007

Hi Mates,

I am unable to fetch data from Source which is CSV file whose sample contents are given below:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Fiscal year";"Posting period";"Company Code";"Functional area";"Profit Center";"Business area";"Group Account";"Posting Level";"Document Type";"Accounting Principle";"Cost Pool";"Financial Owner";"Period Value GC"
"2006";"12";"AR00";"A107";"P1131";"7200";"3410";"10";"18";"GAAP";"#";"#";"$ 0.00"
"2006";"12";"AR00";"A107";"P1131";"9600";"3410";"10";"18";"GAAP";"#";"#";"$ 0.00"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The error message that comes while I preview the source data:

Error:

"The Preview sample contains embedded text qualifiers. The flat file parser doesnot support embedding text qualifiers in data. Parsing columns that contain data with text qualifiers will fail at runtime"

Is there any alternative to remove these text qualifiers from the file. Do we have any utility that can convert these files into text qualifier free CSV file?

Embedded Text Qualifiers

Feb 16, 2007

We have text files that are comma delimited, use double quotes as text qualifiers and sometimes have embedded double quotes. The embedded double quotes are escaped with an additional double quote like: below.

"123","product q"

"124","product ""a"""

DTS 2000 had no problem with this- it correctly parsed the files. The 2005 SSIS file connection manager correctly parses this in preview mode. But when the task is executed the task fails with the message "The column delimiter for column X was not found".

What is the recommended approach for this - we have alot of files in this format.

thanks

Error: Unable To Retrieve Column Information From The Data Source

Jul 7, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to set up a data flow task. The source is "SQL Command" which is
a stored procedure. The proc has a few temp tables that it outputs the final
resultset from. When I hit preview in the ole db source editor, I see the
right output. When I select the "Columns" tab on the right, the "Available
External Column List" is empty. Why don't the column names appear? What is
the work around to get the column mappings to work b/w source and
destination in this scenario.

In DTS previously, you could "fool" the package by first compiling the
stored procedure with hardcoded column names and dummy values, creating and
saving the package and finally changing the procedure back to the actual
output. As long as the columns remained the same, all would work.
Thats not working for me in SSIS.

Thanks in advance.
Asim.

Retrieve Text File Data In SSE For Data Acquisition System

Oct 24, 2007

Hey All,
I am developing a data acquistion system which monitors the amount of energy that a user consumes in different parts of a house and displays the information in real time on their computer screen. I am collecting the data through tranducers attached to the circuit breakers in the breaker box and sending the data to analog-to-digital converter channels in a MCU. I am retrieving the data from the serial port and storing it to a text file. Each line of data in the text file represents three fields which are separated by commas. I will be reading data from multiple data collection boxes so the first field is the unit number, the second fied represents the analog-to-digital converter channel number from each unit, and the third field is the data that is collected from the ATD channel. I am trying to use SSE to retrieve the data from the text file, and parse each line of data into individual columns in a databse. Then I want to be able to extract the data associated with a particular ATD channel number from the databse and display it in the appropriate text field on a windows form.
I've got the MCU programmed. I have no problem collecting the data from the serial port, and I can do the visual basic programming okay. I have absolutely no clue how to read the data into the database, continuosly read new values into the databse, and then access the stored data to update the text fields on the form. Please help if you can, I've been working on this specific problem for a couple of weeks and I'm not making any progress. Thanks.

Unable To Create A New File Data Source: SQL Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied

Jun 22, 2004

Hi ,

I have just downloaded an evaluation version of SQL server from the microsoft website and installed it in my PC.

Now I want to create file data source.

I followed these steps:
-From the control panel, ODBC datasource admin
-click the DSN tab
-click the add button
-select the sql server driver, enter the data source file name
-enter "local" in the server text box as I installed the sql server in my standalone PC.
-click next
After that I had this error.
"Connection failed. SQL server does not exist or access denied."

But The sql server service is running.

Can anyone help me where did my configuration go wrong??

Basic Text File Data Flow Source

Jun 7, 2007

In DTS 2000 I had a situation where I had a text file as input source and text file as output source. On migrating the package to 2005 it puts a wrapper around it which executes it as a 2000 package, the rest of the tasks are neatly converted to 2005 style tasks. I presume this to mean that this will not be supported through to the next version, and there is no direct equivalent in 2005.

My question is how do I import a non-flat file source which has different numbers of columns per line. I did ,somehow, manage to do this with 2000 but cannot seem to get anywhere with 2005.

The flat file source seems to be expecting a common number of columns and just can't seem to cope with no column delimiters on some lines. If anybody knows different I would be glad to hear about it.

Raw data is not helpful to me as only works with a specific raw type (apparently)

Went onto Bulk Insert Task but got this message

[Bulk Insert Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.Bulk load: An unexpected end of file was encountered in the data file.".

Have already browsed with this on web but only find comments about changing timeout setting.

Can find timeout settings in DataFlow source and DataFlow destinations but not in Bulk Insert Task.

As you can see this is a long and protracted question.

If the answer is simple I apologise if not blame Microsoft. Other than that have found SSIS has some nice improvements, apart from the odd vague error message I keep coming across.

Cannot Initialize The Data Source.. Text File Linked Server

Sep 7, 2007

Hi All,

I have this very big text file (2.5 GB - which of course I am not able to open). This resides on a server which has SQL 2005.

I have created a linked server for this text file on my SQL database, and when I try to query the table, I get an error:

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "txtsrv".

Why am I getting this error? When I make a dummy linked server on my local machine and test the steps it all works OK. but when I go to this server where the file and it's SQL instance is lying, I get this error. Please can someone provide me with some help on this?

Many thanks,
~S

P.S. Here is how I created the linked server (I also have the Schema.ini lying under the same folder):

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver txtsrv, 'Jet 4.0',

'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',

'C:SSAnalysis',

'Text'

Loading Flat File With Embedded Column, Text Delimiters And Newline

Jun 14, 2007

I have the misfortune of converting a DTS package to SSIS that loads a flat file that has a text fields that can contain embedded text delimiters ("), column delimiters (,) and even new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) in it. A sample line from the file is posted here, remember this is just one line though it shows as three lines, since the third field has embedded new line in it:

4,"Sam","EVP; MARKETING PRODUCT MANAGER ""Level I"",
Internet Sales / HELP
8005551212",100

If you open in excel it handles it perfectly showing four fields, as below, and this is what I want ( I cannot get it aligned right in the posting, just save the above line in *.csv and open to see what it should be):

4 Sam "EVP; MARKETING PRODUCT MANAGER ""Level I"", 100
Internet Sales / HELP
8005551212"

Now, SSIS errors on the embedded text delimiters and breaks into two or three lines based on which option I chose. I have tried few options based on postings in the forum:
a). Using undouble and undoubleout: Does not work when there are embedded column delimiters (,) in the text field
b). Modified undouble script posted by lvovg at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1718225&SiteID=1. Handles the embedded column delimiters (,) perfectly, but the embedded new lines (CR+LF i.e.,hex 0D 0A) are breaking it.
Since, I am using the ragged right format to read from the file then use transform script on the line by lvovg, the line is already broken by the ragged right format at the embedded new lines, hence does not work.

Right now I am stuck. Can someone please help (anyone from MS) ? I am already baffled at the amount of coding required to convert a very basic ( and working ) flat file load DTS package to SSIS. I am willing to persist bit longer to convert this to SSIS, before I give up and stick with DTS and wait for a fix / workaround.

Thanks.

Text Qualifiers Around Non-text Values When Exporting To CSV

Aug 15, 2007

Hi
I'm using SSIS to export views & tables in SQL 2005 to csv files. My problem is that when I select that I want to use " as a text qualifier, it also uses them to surround non-text fields such as time/date and integer fields.

In SQL 2000 I used DTS packages and they handled the data without any issues.

Can anyone help?

Asp.net Page Is Unable To Retrieve The Right Data Calling The Store Procedure From The Dataset/data Adapter

Apr 11, 2007

I'm trying to figure this out
 I have a store procedure that return the userId if a user exists in my table, return 0 otherwise
------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Create Procedure spUpdatePasswordByUserId
@userName varchar(20),
@password varchar(20)
AS
Begin
Declare @userId int
Select @userId = (Select userId from userInfo Where userName = @userName and password = @password)
if (@userId > 0)
return @userId
else
return 0
------------------------------------------------------------------
I create a function called UpdatePasswordByUserId in my dataset with the above stored procedure that returns a scalar value. When I preview the data from the table adapter in my dataset, it spits out the right value.
But when I call this UpdatepasswordByUserId from an asp.net page, it returns null/blank/0
 passport.UserInfoTableAdapters oUserInfo = new UserInfoTableAdapters();
Response.Write("userId: " + oUserInfo.UpdatePasswordByUserId(txtUserName.text, txtPassword.text) );
 Do you guys have any idea why?

Unable To Retrieve Data While Using Between Operator

Example am using

select * from USER where vendor between 'N' and 'V'

Here I expect to get all the records that has vendor name starting with N,O,P,......U,V

But to my surprise i found am just getting N,O ......,U. I am unable to retrieve vendors start with 'V'

when i use between 'N' and 'W' it shows with 'V' also........but not showing vendors with 'W'

So I doubt whether between is considering second option 'V' or not.

Unable To Retrieve Data When Using Greek Characters In Statement

Apr 26, 2007

Hi,I'm trying to do retrieve some data from a table where the content isin Greek, however, thequery is not working. It's a very simple statement, but I'm missingsomething.Here is the table...if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[REPORT_LOCALE]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)drop table [dbo].[REPORT_LOCALE]GOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[REPORT_LOCALE] ([XL_REPORT_ID] [int] NULL ,[TEXT_NAME] [nvarchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_ASNULL ,[LOCALE] [int] NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOThe first statment shows me a number of rows. I copied the content ofthe Text_Name column and pasteit into QA to form the second statement. However, the second statementreturns no data.SELECT * FROM Report_LocaleSELECT * FROM Report_Locale WHERE Text_Name = 'Λογ.Διαχ. – Τ?.-*?ουπ.-Διαφ.'Hopefully the Greek characters will display properly within this post,but the idea is basically to take the Greek text and build that into aquery. I can do the remainder later once I understand why this doesnot work as I expect. I realise my expectation is based on doingthings in English so I need to understand the differences. We've donethis for various other languages using other character sets, which iswhy I am puzzled.Any pointers ?ThanksRyan
