Unexpected Error While Removing Backup Files In Sql 2005 Setup
Dec 18, 2007
I was trying an edition upgrade from SQL 2005 standard x64 to SQL 2005 enterprise x64 using the "setup SKUUPGRADE=1" from the command line. The SO is W2003 server R2 enterprise and I have a SQL clustered environment with 2 nodes (active/passive).
I select to upgrade the SQL module and I mark the checkbox for the cluster installation. The installation seems to work properly untill setup is doing the task "removing backup files". Then 2 "unexpected error" message appears as follows. The 2 above windows appear when you click on the help icon.
Link to screen capture
The following is the end of the SQL setup log file:
I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition onto a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine, but unfortunately each time that I attempt to install I receive an error message in the summary log as follows:
Product : Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Product Version: 9.00.1399.06 Install : Failed Log File : C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Last Action : InstallFinalize Error String : The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Updating Installed Files. The error is : Fatal error during installation. Error Number : 29528
There is probably a simple solution for the issue but unfortunately I am unaware of what it is? I can€™t tell if the issue is specific to registry settings, security, file types, etc€¦ The information below surrounds the error w/in the log, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.
For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.
After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.
Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?
I got this error message during SQL Server Express install with no error code on Server 2003 SP1. I'm installing on an older development machine and although I do have a very large log file somewhere I wanted to post before I even dug into it. I noticed in IIS under my Webs that the MSSQLExpress webs were there at first but when I clicked on them to get any info or Properties... they dissapeared. So they were almost installed but they no longer exist. Also I do not have a SQL Service Manager icon down near the clock.
I almost took a step to fix this. After reading a few posts about similar problems I thought maybe this happened because the Default Web Sites IP # was not set to (All Unassigned). I was going to try a repair install from Add/Remove Programs but the temporary setup files are already gone. I really dont want to uninstall all 5 SQL components from Add/Remove Programs and start from scratch.
As good security practice we usually remove the Default Web or as in this development servers case we changed the IP from (All Unassigned) to an IP that is only accessible from certain machines on the internal network. I obviously should have read more pre setup guides. Anyway how can I fix this without reinstalling everything?
I'm currently receiving the following error message whilst attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003 (32 Bit): Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Installing performance counters. The error is: The system cannot find the file specified.
This server already has an install of SQL Server 2000 as the default instance. I'm attempting to install a new named instance of SQL Server 2005.

You can ignore this and it will complete the installation, but subsequently trying to patch with SP2 will fail on the same sections - Hotfix.exe crashes whilst attempting to patch Database Services, Integration Services and Client Components (3 separate crashes).
I've removed SQL Server 2005 elements and tried to re-install, but it's not improved the situation.
I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:
OWC11
SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files
SQL Server Database Services
Reporting Services
Visual Studio Integrated Development
SQL Server Books Online
SQLXML4
Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.
The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.
I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.
I am using snapshot replication to copy data from one database to another. I truncate the destination table first. The publisher and the subscriber are different databases on the same server. The data turns into 1 unrecognizable row.
Here is what the source table looks like: displayTypeID, displayType 1, Title List Formats 2, Title Details 3, Title List Export 4, Pricing Notes 5, clone Mask 001 6, clone Mask 002 7, clone Mask 004 8, clone Mask 008 9, hide From Admin 10, not Common Attr 11, Insert Title 12, title Types
The resulting data looks like this: DisplayType, displayTypeId , 1660953600 I see no errors in replication and nothing in the source table looks like bad data that could cause such a malady. I see the problem on two different servers now and identified the source of the problem, the column order is reversed in the source and destination tables. The data types do not even match so I would at the very least expect an error from bcp.
I am trying to install SQl Server 2005 SP2 but it was throwing an unexpected error when trying to install "setup support files".

I'm trying to install Microsoft SQL Server (en_SQL2005_DEV_Servers_Sept2005). But when I do so I get:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup ------------------------------
There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.

I keep getting this error message at the same point everytime I try to install SQL 2005. I have tried everything I can find on the website and nothing works! Any ideas???
I would like to know, if it is at all possible for Setup files of SQL Server 2005 to be distributed. We have clients who currently use our software which makes use SQL Server 2000. We are looking ahead at distributing our new version with SQL Server 2005 and would like create an Installation package that will upgrade the database engine to the Workgroup or Enterprise editions of SQL Server 2005. Are there any suggestions around this topic, we are looking at ways in making this task of upgrading the engine as streamlined and automated for our Client. Please include advise with regards to licensing.
I'm currently working on a project which uses a SQL Express 2005 database. I want to be able to setup SQL Express from my C# program so that it can perform backups to a specified path location at the requested interval itself. This would free up my program from having to manage the backups. Just wanted to know if this is possible?
Also, when the current database becomes corrupt will SQL Express perform the restore for the user automatically, instead of them having to manually request a restore? I realize that it might not be able to handle the restores in the same way as backups, but I figured I'd at least ask.
I have sent a mssql backup file in .bak format to my host admin and asked them restore it. but they told me there are 3 files with 3 different dates in that backup what does it mean? should I ask them to restore all of them or just the last one? Thanks very much in addvance (context: MS SQL 2005 express)
I am trying to backup the sql database files from a local computer to a server location through vb.net 2005. Is there a simple way to do this? Every time I try to detach the database, I cannot because the database is in use. Is there something I am missing with this?
I am trying to configure a maintenance plan in SQL 2005 to do a full backup every day and to do log file backups every hour.
What I want to do is to keep 3 days worth of full backups and 24 hours of log backups and remove all the backups older that this from the server so that I do not use all of my disk space. I will then backup these files to tape so that I have a good backup history.
In SQL 2000 there was a simple option to remove backup files older than a given time frame. Is there an option to do this in 2005? If not can you suggest a way that I can do this.

I am trying to install SQL2k5 on several developers workstations when I receive this error. I have successfully installed on a server and on my workstation...
I'm new in this forum and id'like to post a strange error i can't solve by myself.
On a Win2003Server setted as a Stand Alone Server (without Active Directory) i installed my SQL SEERVER 2005 Workgroup edition with Management Studio and ODBC: Everything fine. a software house installed a IRP based on SQL Server: everything fine too.
They asked me to buil Dctive Directory on server. I should uninstall SQL Server, build up the AD domain and then reinstall SQL Server and from SQL Management Studio reconnect all the db.
Ok with uninstall operations, ok with AD setup but when i tryed to setup Sql Server 2005 it starts fine the DB engine but during management component setup i receive this error:

I am trying to install the client tools on an XP machine.
I already had to run the .NET 2.0 repair to get past an earlier problem. 3 components fail, the first one being VS.
Here are the highlights of the summary.txt file. What can I do to resolve this? TIA!

I removed the SQL 2005 Express then started installing the Client Components in 2005 developer version. I tried to install into C drive or another drive but got the same error.
Hello, I am trying to install SQL 2005 April CTP on a laptop running XP SP2. (Using the MSDN DVD Pack - VSTS etc). The pre-requisites get installed but then i get this error message below. The link it points to just says that there is no info available on that topic. Can someone help?
There are 3 log files attached to a SQL Database . I would like to remove one of them as it was created by Previous DBA for temp use (Don'r ask me why?) If I run DBCC ShrinkFile with EMPTYFILE , would it let me drop that file or is there any command to do it? OR is it not possible at all
Trying to install SQL Server 2005 Standard on a pc with Windows xp pro spII with Visual Studio 2005 pro installed.I receive an error after 2/3 of the setup time. This is the error: Linkid: 20476Product name Microsoft SQL ServerProduct version 9.00.1399.06Message source Setup.rllMessage id 50000EvtType packageengineinstallpackageaction
Hi I am trying to learn VB 2005 and I am reaching a step in my studies which requires downloading Sql Server 2005. However every time I attempt to download, I receive this error message.
"SQL Server Setup cannot install files to the compressed or encrypted folder: c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server. To continue, make sure that your installation directories are not compressed or encrypted, or specify a different directory, and then run SQL Server Setup again."
I have tried saving it to another folder, this did not help. Somewhere in my search for answers, I came across something that said I needed a strong Sa authentication or password. I did not have a place to store a password in the setup program and when I went to administration password all my fields were blank, so it should not have needed any password. I also tried the link that this error message directed me to and they said they had no further information on this error.
I have exhausted all the leads, a beginner could possibly come across, except you. Please Help!
"SQL Server is unable to run. Either the owning node or all nodes that currently part of the virtual server are not available. Review any SCC failures and validate that all nodes are online."
Can someone tell me what's the cause of this error? How can this be corrected?
