Using 'Alter Login' To Change Password In SQL Server 2005

We have an application using SQLOLEDB connection to a SQL Server 2005 database. Per domain policy, the users are required to change their password every 60 days.
The accounts are established to 'Enforce password policy'.
When we try to execute the 'ALTER LOGIN' command to change the password, locks are being established and will not free the account without bouncing the instance.
After issuing the command, any interaction with the server using this UserID results in a "lock request time out" error 1222.
I have tried issuing this command using both the application and through SQLServer Mgmt Studio Express and the results are the same.
SQL Server 2005 Express keeps putting in a different password than the one I chose. I would check the properties on the login I want to change. Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Is this a bug? I ever tried this syntax to no avail:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<mypassword>' CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF
I have seen alot of comments posted about an Issue in SQL2005 that no one at microsoft could really answer. If a user would try to alter his own login, it would fail stating a permissions error.
This is what I did to get it to work .
USE my_dataBase GO
Alter Login [my_login] WITH PASSWORD = 'newpassword' OLD_PASSWORD = 'oldpassword'
In previous examples, people were trying to do an alter login without first narrowing it to the database. If you do not include the USE statement it will fail.
Another thing to note is that they can only change certain things....they cannot turn off check_policy or check_expiration.
I am using SQL Server 2005 at home. My problem is I forgot my password to log in to my server. I only remember user name is 'sa'. I haven't used it for two to three months. So I forgot password. Previously, When I used sql server 2000, my login is as windows login. so no problem. But this time, I set seperate log in and I got this problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks George
SQL Server 2005 Express will not allow me to change the password for my login user. I tried deleting the user and re-creating the user. Another password is being put in although the password I put in was accepted. I even test to see what would happen if I left the password blank. It got accepted. But when I look at the password for my login user again, a different and much longer password was put in. I even tried this T-SQL statement:
CREATE LOGIN <loginname> WITH PASSWORD='<passwordname>', CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF, CHECK_POLICY = OFF

I currently have a login page in asp.net 2.0 linked to a SQL 2005 database table that holds the usernames and passwords. At present, I am on an "honor system" where I do have access to the passwords of the other users but would like to change it so that I cannot know what the users' passwords are. Thank goodness that there is no personal information within the pages and the logins were created to keep a log of who logs in and what not. However, I would like to soon hold more personlized information, hence the need to encrypt each user's password even from myself. I have read up on Symmetric Encryption for SQL 2005 but I would like to know if there is anything else available, any good proven methods that someone else has already tried. Also, while testing out Symmetric Encryption, I noticed that I have to supply the encryption password for the decryption. However, if I know what the password for the encryption/decription is, does it not defeat the purpose of having the encryption at all, in terms of the "Admin" having access to sensitive information? Hi, I'm using the SQL Server Everywhere CTP on the desktop and haven't used SQL Server Mobile in the past.
I'm having some difficulty determining whether it's possible to change a SQL Server Everywhere database's password. Obviously authentication on a file-based SQL Server Everywhere database differs from that of server-based SQL Server database. Is it possible to change a SQL Server Everywhere database's password?
That said, I feel like I've made a decent search of the to change a SQL Server Everywhere books online. If it's not possible to change the password in place (i.e., without copying all data to a new file with a different password), please count this as a vote to add that functionality. Making a database password "permanent" lessens its effectiveness. Thanks,
A former Network Manager setup the Sql Server Services NT Domain account. I need the password to set it up on our MS Exchange server, should I change the password or create a new domain account. How can I find out if there is no other applications using the service account in our domain, since the new Network manager doesn't know the password. What happens if I change the password.
Is there a way to set up automated email notification beginning 14 days prior to when a SQL Server Login password (that has "Enforce password expiration" enabled) will expire?
I used to have an Access database which had tables for users, roles, actions etc.
This was used by a C++ client app (using ADO) which logged in, got the user ID and password (by raising a login dialog ) and then checked these against a user table and then assigned the roles and possible actions.
Now we have SWL Server Express 2005 - NT Authorisation - how do I get/pass the user ID to the C++ Application so it can get the associated roles? Seems silly to have 2 logins.
Better still can I do away with the App's User table or make its password column invisible to all users bar Admin and the C++ App?

We have a situation where SSRS reports are using Testuser account to run the SSRS reports for every user who has access to these reports.Now developers need the password for this login Testuser to proceed with their ssrs reports development, but its sort of mess that no one has password ever saved.So in case is there a way it can be retrieved or what should be an alternative if password cannot be retrieved for that login, as i believe changing the password will break the reports using the current password?
We need to use SQL Server Authentication for some reason and would like to enforce Password Policy with 90-day expiration period. I found "Change password" dialogue appears when I first logged in with the new user, but don't know
(1)what happens when the user failed to change the password before it's expired or (2)how a user can change his password in advance of the expiration date with no particular server-level permission.
Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors. First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.
My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

We are having some commercial applications that are running on sql servers at different sites, all with sql security. The software vendor wants to copy data into staging tables on our BI server. But our BI server only support Integrated security.
But how can i say, in the definition of a linked server (at the remote machines) to swicth security system ?
If it is possible i could enter a fixed domain-account in that users fields, but i suppose that this field was intended for SqlServer security.
I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.
Since last so many days i am seeing that someone is trying to login to sql server through login name sa.but that login is failed.and this is occuring constantly.
Earlier i had same login failed message for another ip address.i have blocked that ip address through access-list in firewall.but now i am seeing the same message for another ip address.
(1).how can i permenently remove this message from Event log.
(2).What is the impact of this on sql server performance.is sql server performance degraded by this kind of contineous attack?

In my SQL SERVER 2005, sa login is enabled, despite Windows Authentication mode being set. When I'm trying to change it to disabled, I get the error "cannot alter 'sa' login. it doesn't exist or you don't have the permission" How can I change the status?
The sa (system administrator) login seems to be disabled for my SQL Server 2005. I don't have the permissions to change it from the "loging properties-tab".
And as mentioned in an earlier thread, my windows authentication doesn't work for 2005...
So, is there a way to enable the login for the sa user when your windows authentication is screwed up? SQLCMD??
I am trying to create a stored procedure to Call ALTER LOGIN based on the the username passed in. However, the Alter login statement chokes on any parameter. Is there a way I can alter sql logins from a web form ? I try the following and it bombs
ALTER LOGIN @LoginName WITH PASSWORD = @Password But this works ALTER LOGIN 'TestUser' WITH PASSWORD = '123test' I guess the alter login statement does not work with Parameters. Any thoughts ?
I need to be able to change a table column name from within my C# code. The system in this part of the application is intended to be highly configurable and column names on the table being operated upon can change. The code adds square brackets to the column name (because the user might set up a column name with one or more spaces) but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right because I'm getting an error. The code that builds the SQL command is:SqlCommand = new SqlCommand("ALTER TABLE wto_facilities CHANGE [" + oldAccomType + "][" + accomType.Text + "] varchar(20)", conn); On the first test run, the code produces the following: ALTER TABLE wto_facilities CHANGE [Hotel] [Hotels] varchar(20)However, it's giving me the following error: Incorrect syntax near 'Hotels'It looks fine to me, but it's obviously not.
I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.
Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)
I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.
CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON
All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.
