We see the following message in our error log.
WARNING: Clearing procedure cache to free contiguous memory.
It is accomonpanied by fairly intensive CPU activity.
We get this roughly once per working day.
Anyone have any idea why, and what we can do to stop this?
May I know how to clear the cache area in the analyser as I need to know the time taken for execution of an sql statement(query) before and after creation of indexes.
Hi, We have an application which fetches data from a table which has approximately 1 million records.
1. Nearly 25 users will be using this application concurrently. 2. frequent updations will be done to the records in the geographyrolecurriculum table. 3. This table has 1 clustered index and 4 nonclustered index bounded to it.
Problem Statement: 1. Application runs smoothly for 15 - 20 days and after that all the screens throws timeout errors. When i clear the sys.syscacheobjects its working fine again and screens get loaded quickly. Please tell me how clearing the syscacheobjects makes the execution fast? and is this the correct way to solve the timeout issue or is there any other alternative?
2. Will the stored procs timeout if the tempdb is full ?
On an SQL2000 Enterprise Edition with SP3 and 3.2 GB memory, I have restore around 700 databases from backup .bak files with no errors. Now, while in the process to restore (proc to restore with move statement) another 150 databases, following errors are encountered: ------------------------- There is insufficient system memory to run this query.

Query Memory Manager: Grants=0 Waiting=0 Maximum=150384 Available=150384 "Buffer Distribution: stolen=6699 Free=280 Procedures=4821 Inram=0 Dirty=1221 Kept=0 I/O=0, Latched=1169, Other=194482" ------------------------- Is ther memory leaking and/or hardware related? the sql used only 1.8 gb mem and the whole system is using 2.4 gb mem. After reboot, same error appears in the middle of restoring 150 databases.
I am using SSRS 2008 and the reports we have use parameters of type Date/Time. Â The reports work well when the parameter values are entered correctly.
When entering an invalid date format for one of the Date/Time parameters the following error is displayed "The value provided for the report '<parameter name>' is not valid for its type. (rsReportParameterTypeMismatch). Â This seems to be working correctly as well. Â However, when the correct date format is then entered for the report parameter for which the report threw an error, the error persists and the report doesn't run again. Â Setting the parameter to "NULL" doesn't work either.
The only way to get the report to run again is to refresh the entire report. Â Of course, if at that point one has entered a bunch of other parameter values, those values all disappear.

I am using a lookup and full cache, occasionally i get this warning:[Lookup [150]] Warning: The component "Lookup" (150) encountered duplicate reference key values when caching reference data. This error occurs in Full Cache mode only. Either remove the duplicate key values, or change the cache mode to PARTIAL or NO_CACHE. Now I know it is only a warning but it is highlighting a real issue.Is there a way of capturing that this has happened?

We get this message in the log file and then all hell breaks loose until it resets memory. The SQL Service continues working but nobody can connect for about 5 minutes and then is seems to reset itself. This has happened three times over the past two weeks. Only one time it did create the SQLDUMP files but all three occurences have practically the same entries.
We are running SQL Server 2005 x64 SP2 under Windows 2003 x64 SP1. We have 4GB RAM and SQL is configured to use 2GB of it. We have a large number of databases (about 400) on this one instance that experiences this problem. The server itself is not under a tremendous load. All of the databases were recently upgraded from SQL 2000 SP4 32 bit instance. The first occurence happened just days after the migration.

Is there a way to drop clean buffers at the database level instead of the server/instance level like the undocumented €œDBCC FLUSHPROCINDB (@dbid)€?? Is there a workaround for €œdbo€? to be able to flush procedure and data cache without being elevated to €œsysadmin€? server role?
PS: I am aware of the sp_recompile option that can be used to invalidate cached execution plans. Thx.
I'm executing a stored procedure, before execution the memory used for sqlservr.exe in the task manager reflects about 50mb. but after the stored procedure is executed, the memory used by sqlservr.exe boosts up to 200mb and remains at 200mb even after execution. this causes my pc to slow down. how dow i reset the memory used by sqlservr.exe after executing the stored procedure? any help will be very much appreciated. thank you.
Apparently this error was fixed in CU12 for SQL 2008, but it seems to have raised it's head again in SQL 2012.[SSIS.Pipeline] Warning: Warning: Could not open global shared memory to communicate with performance DLL; data flow performance counters are not available. I've got a client who is seeing it. but I've not seen a fix in CU1 or CU2 for 2012.
I'm busy rewriting DTS packages as SSIS packages. As and when I finish a package I run it in debug mode via Microsoft Visual Studio and then examine the Exection Results to see the messages generated.
Now it may or may not matter how I run the package but the following warning has been generated :-

I have a virtual server (VMware ESX) with 64GB RAM running a single instance of SQL 2012 SP1. The max memory config is set to 59392 (58GB).
The Page Life Expectancy for this server has been averaging well under 10 mins for the last few days, according to our monitoring.
I have been checking the amount of data in the buffer cache periodically during the day with the below query, which seems to show that there is never more than about 10GB of data at any one time, frequently dropping below 5GB:

I am aware that other things will require some of that memory (plan cache etc.) but with Max Mem of 58GB, I would expect there to be a much higher amount of actual cached data at any one time. I did the same checks on another VM with the same amount of RAM/Max Mem setting, and there was 50GB of data in the cache, with PLE measured in hours.
I would like to know what happens when a very large reference data set for a lookup transform with full caching enabled is getting loaded during package execution and the computer memory runs out or is very low. Does SSIS a) give an out of memory error of some sort b) resort to a no caching or partial caching mode c) maintain the full caching mode but will switch to using the paging file(virtual memory).
I think it will resort to using the page file in which case the benefits of in memory lookups are lost and performance would suffer. If I cannot upgrade the memory or shrink the reference set somehow, i should switch that lookup task to use partial caching or no caching with an indexed lookup table. Would this make sense?
I know this might be a dumb one, but what the heck. My new 7.0 server's procedure cache stays at 100%. After researching this looks like what I want. Nay response appreciated.
Ours is a MSSQL Server Client server application with very minimal usage of Store procedures. The proc cache is configured at 5%.I execute "dbcc proccache" to keep track of the proc cache. I have seen that the "proc cache size" reduces to a very small a amount when there is peak usage. It starts at 42,000 and comes down to 400, though it is always greater than "proc cache used". I am worried if this causes crashes. Please advise why this happens and solutions if any. Thanks in advance, Ramakrishna seelam.
I have installed a SQL Server diagnose tool for evaluation. It prompts and warns me that "Procedure Cache hit rate is for example 15%. Its help indicates:
The Procedure Cache Hit Rate alarm is raised when the ratio between the number of times SQL Server looks for a plan in the procedure cache and the number of times it does not find a required plan in the procedure cache falls below a threshold.
A low procedure cache hit rate indicates that SQL Server is finding fewer of the query execution plans it needs already in memory and therefore has to perform more compiles. These extra compilations will degrade SQL Server performance by causing extra CPU load.
Is any way we can tell sql server to keep specific (long runing) query in procedure Cache. I already tried to do this by creating job (run every 1 hr from 8 am to 6 pm) but is not enough
Is there a way to increase the size of the procedure cache. Or is it only a auto configuring option. I have 2gb of memory, and when I check the size of the procedure cache it is just 10mb. I would like to increase this to around 50mb. Not sure if there is an setting to do this. Had a look on BOL could not find anything.
I'm putting together some monitor scripts, have buffer cache ratio etc etc but struggling to get an accurate script for the current procedure cache hit ratio...
I have a 32 bit SQL 2005 EE clustered installation with 10GB of physical memory and AWE enabled. Our monitoring tool, Spotlight, is reporting the Procedure Cache to be 384MB and a Hit Rate of 75% on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes the Procedure Cache increases to 495MB and a Hit Rate of 82%.
(1) With 2005 can the Procedure Cache be increased?
(2) What is the max size of Procedure Cache?
(3) How do I increase the Hit Rate to a higher percentage?
I do not encounter the issue on any other SQL Server installation, however this is our only cluster.

Using SQL Server 2000. When does SQL flush or clear the procedurecache? I am dynamically creating and dropping stored procedures (SP).Does SQL clear the cache for the SP that has been dropped? My server (SQL 2005 SP2) typically runs with a procedure cache usage of about 92% or higher... lately it seems like at some point in time during the day it just drops to anywhere between 50% and 65%... with this comes horrible server performance and many snowball effects. If I clear the procedure cache it will go up only about 10% for a minute or two. The only way I can get it to recover completely seems to be restarting the SQL service. Then it will be fine till the next incident. The database is a read only (not set to read only but no updates other than replication). and the same SPs are run over and over and over throughout the day. also did notice that the compiles of the SPs goes up drastically at this point also. not sure if this is part of the cause or part of the effect.
CPU is normal. response from anything (even sp_who) is slow.
i do not understand the way procedure cache works completely so I thought I would ask for some direction.
Any ideas where to look or where to start??? Any thing I can do to catch this when it happens would be great.
