Script To Change Cluster Index To Non Cluster

May 20, 2003

Hi all,

We have many tables which have cluster index on column with datatype 'Char(200)'.
Does anyone have script to change cluster index to noncluster for all user tables which have clustered index on a column with 'char(200)' datatype.

Thanks,

How To Make Sure No Other Table Writes Happen Between 2 SQL Statements ?

Nov 25, 2007

Ok, here is my situation.....
When someone navigates to a user's profile page on my site, I present them with a slideshow of the user's photos using the AJAX slideshow extender.  I obtain the querystring value in the URL (to determine which user's page I'm on) and feed that into a webservice via a context value where an array of photos is created for the slideshow.  Now, in order to create the array's size, I do a COUNT of all of that specific user's photos.  Then, I run another SQL statement to obtain the path of those photos in the file system.  However, during the time of that first SQL query's execution (the COUNT statement) to the time of the second SQL query (getting the paths of the photos), the owner of that profile may upload or delete a photo from his profile.  I understand this would be a very rare occurrence since SQL statements 1 and 2 will be executed within milliseconds of each other, but it is still possible I suppose.  When this happens, when I try to populate the array, either the array will be too small or too large.  I'm using SqlDataReader for this as it seems to be less memory and resource intensive than datasets, but I could be wrong since I'm a relative beginner and newbie.   This is what I have in my vb file for the webservice.....Public Function GetSlides(ByVal contextKey As String) As AjaxControlToolkit.Slide()     Dim dbConnection As New SqlConnection("string for the data source, etc.")     Try          dbConnection.Open()          Dim memberId = CInt(contextKey)          Dim photoCountLookupCmd As New SqlCommand _               ("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Photo WHERE memberId = " & memberId, dbConnection)          Dim thisReader As SqlDataReader = photoCountLookupCmd.ExecuteReader()          Dim photoCount As Integer          While (thisReader.Read())               photoCount = thisReader.GetInt32(0)          End While          thisReader.Close()          Dim MySlides(photoCount - 1) As AjaxControlToolkit.Slide          Dim photoLookupCmd As New SqlCommand _               ("SELECT fullPath FROM Photo WHERE memberId = " & memberId, dbConnection)          thisReader = photoLookupCmd.ExecuteReader()
          Dim i As Integer          For i = 0 To 2               thisReader.Read()               Dim photoUrl As String = thisReader.GetString(0)               MySlides(i) = New AjaxControlToolkit.Slide(photoUrl, "", "")          Next i          thisReader.Close()          Return MySlides     Catch ex As SqlException     Finally          dbConnection.Close()
     End Try
End FunctionI'm trying to use the most efficient method to interact with the database since I don't have unlimited hardware and there may be moderate traffic on the site.  Is SqlDataReader the way to go or do I use something else?  If I do use SqlDataReader, can someone show me how I can run those 2 SQL statements in best practice?  Would I have to somehow lock writing to that table when I start the first SQL statement, then release the lock after I execute the second SQL statement?  What's the best practice in this kind of scenario.
Thanks in advance.

User-defined Stored Procedures InsertCustomerin Northwind Database That Is Cached In Database Explorer:No New Values Inserted?

Jan 14, 2008

Hi all,

I put "Northwind" Database in the Database Explorer of my VB 2005 Express and I have created the following stored procedure in the Database Exploror:

--User-defined stored procedure 'InsertCustomer'--

ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.InsertCustomer

(

@CustomerID nchar(5),

@CompanyName nvarchar(40),

@ContactName nvarchar(30),

@ContactTitle nvarchar(30),

@Address nvarchar(60),

@City nvarchar(15),

@Region nvarchar(15),

@PostalCode nvarchar(10),

@Country nvarchar(15),

@Phone nvarchar(24),

@Fax nvarchar(24)

)

AS

INSERT INTO Customers

(

CustomerID,

CompanyName,

ContactName,

ContactTitle,

Address,

City,

Region,

PostalCode,

Country,

Phone,

Fax

)

VALUES

(

@CustomerID,

@CompanyName,

@ContactName,

@ContactTitle,

@Address,

@City,

@Region,

@PostalCode,

@Country,

@Phone,

@Fax

)
=================================================
In my VB 2005 Express, I created a project "KimmelCallNWspWithAdoNet" that had the following code:
--Form_Kimmel.vb--
Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form_Kimmel

Public Sub InsertCustomer()

Dim connectionString As String = "Integrated Security-SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;" + _

"Initial Catalog=northwind;Data Source=NAB-WK-EN12345"

Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

connection.Open()

Try

Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("InsertCustomer", connection)

command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

command.Parameters.Add("@CustomerID", "PAULK")

command.Parameters.Add("@CompanyName", "Pauly's Bar")

command.Parameters.Add("@ContactName", "Paul Kimmel")

command.Parameters.Add("@ContactTitle", "The Fat Man")

command.Parameters.Add("@Address", "31025 La Jolla")

command.Parameters.Add("@City", "Inglewoog")

command.Parameters.Add("@Region", "CA")

command.Parameters.Add("@Counrty", "USA")

command.Parameters.Add("@PostalCode", "90425")

command.Parameters.Add("@Phone", "(415) 555-1234")

command.Parameters.Add("@Fax", "(415 555-1235")

Console.WriteLine("Row inserted: " + _

command.ExecuteNonQuery().ToString)

Catch ex As Exception

Console.WriteLine(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

connection.Close()

End Try

End Sub

End Class
==============================================

I executed the Form_Kimmel.vb and I got no errors. But I did not get the new values insterted in the table "Custermers" of Northwind database. Please help and tell me what I did wrong and how to correct this problem.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Index On User Defined Type Fields

Apr 4, 2008

Is there a syntax to create indexes on user-defined type's fields and methods? Can I index UDT-fields?

I tried but only get syntax error.

Code Snippet

-- put an index on the picture luminance

CREATE INDEX myIdx ON myTbl(picMetaData.Brightness) -- !! error

GO

Error message:

Code Snippet

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

Incorrect syntax near '.'.

According to books online (BOL), section User-defined types requirements says
In the SQL Server 2005 RTM version, CLR UDTs with user-defined serialization were allowed to have their fields indexed as part of non-persisted computed columns or views. In such situations, non-deterministic UDT serialization/deserialization could lead to index corruption, and therefore has been removed from SQL Server 2005 SP1. In SQL Server 2005 SP1, UDT fields must use native serialization or be persisted in order to be indexed. Any existing indexes on UDT fields should continue to function as before.

What are BOL trying to say about index on UDT fields?

Thanks for any hints!

To Cluster Index Or Not

Mar 30, 2001

I have inherited a db with no clustered indexes, but composite indexes on each table. The DB has about 500 tables(1-5 gig when fully loaded), but on a given session a user might only insert 1 or 2 records in 6-7 of the tables, with about 20-30 current users 8-5PM. THe DB is kinda of a mix between low-end OLTP and DSS. For space and performance I was going to drop the existing indexes and replace them with clustered indexes. Any opinions or gotchas appreciated

Primary Key With Cluster Index

Oct 9, 2007

Hi All,

One of my client having 1 million(nearly) records in a table.
I defined the table as below
1) Created table with one col(we can name it as "ID") having IDENTITY
2) Using "alter table", I created CLUSTERED PRIMARY KEY Constraint on Same field (ID)
3) The Primary key having 2 ref with another 2 tables

Now the issue is when we create or define a primary key (With Clustered Option) automatically cluster Index will be created on defined table

As such table having huge data whenever any updation or insertion against that particular table taking huge amount of time, because the cluster Index trying re-paging whole data. Because of re-paging each and every time "Transaction Log also growing in huge" (database is in full recovery mode and client wants in same mode only)
Data partitioning not posible because whole data related and current live data

I tried following options with vain

1) To Clear transaction log I suggested to take regular log backup's
2) I tried to drop cluster index and tried to implement non clustered index
Drop and re-create index is take taking huge amount of time
Even in this process I have to Re_Index remaining Index's also

Pls give me any other solution or suggestion in this regard

with Thanks & Regards
Bhaskara

Transact SQL :: Verify Inserted Values From One Table (in CSV File) With Another Table (in Database)

Aug 4, 2015

I am looking for a Sql query to verify the inserted values from one table(in CSV file) with another table(in sql database)

For example: I have below Values column that is present in once CSV file, after my data migration the values get stored in Results table under Message column.

I need to very whether values(1X,1Y) are inserted in Message record "successfully inserted value 1X"

Values (CSV)
1X
1Y

Results Table(SQL)
CreatedDate                   Message
2015-08-04 08:45:29.203  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:44:29.103  TEst pass
2015-08-04 08:43:29.103  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:42:29.203  test point
2015-08-04 08:35:29.203  successfully inserted value 1Y
2015-08-04 08:30:29.203  Test Pass
2015-08-04 08:28:29.203  successfully inserted value 1Y

If all values are inserted:

Output:
All values from values table are inserted successfully
Total count of values inserted: 2
If only few values are inserted, example only 1X from Values table is inserted in Message

Example:
Results Table CreatedDate     Message
2015-08-04 08:45:29.203  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:44:29.103  TEst pass
2015-08-04 08:43:29.103  successfully inserted value 1X
2015-08-04 08:42:29.203  test point

Output:
All values from values are not inserted successfully in result table.
Total count of values inserted: 1
Missing Values not inserted in results table are: 1Y

Is Having A Trigger That Inserts A Row In Table 'A', When A Row In Same Table Is Inserted By ADo.Net Code?

Oct 13, 2006

I want to insert a row for a Global user  in Table 'A' whenever ADO.Net code inserts a Local user row into same table. I recommended using a trigger to implement this functionality, but the DBA was against it, saying that stored proecedures should be used, since triggers are unreliable and slow down the system by placing unecessary locks on the table. Is this true OR the DBA is saying something wrong? My thinking is that Microsoft will never include triggers if they are unreliable and the DBA is just wanting to offload the extra DBA task of triggers to the programmer so that a stored procedure is getting called, so he has less headache on his hands.Thanks

Advantages Of Using Nonclustered Index After Using Clustered Index On One Table

Jul 3, 2006

Hi everyone,
When we create a clustered index firstly, and then is it advantageous to create another index which is nonclustered ??
In my opinion, yes it is. Because, since we use clustered index first, our rows are sorted and so while using nonclustered index on this data file, finding adress of the record on this sorted data is really easier than finding adress of the record on unsorted data, is not it ??

User Defined Function: Convert String Value Of Table To Table Object

Does anyone know where to find or how to write a quick user defined fucntionthat will return a table object when passed the string name of the tableobject. The reason why I want dynamicallly set the table name in a storedprocudue WITHOUT using concatination and exec a SQL String.HenceIf @small_int_parameter_previous = 1 then@vchar_tablename = "sales_previous"else@vchar_tablename = "sales"Endselect * from udf_TableLookup(@vchar_tablename )So if I pass 1, that means I want all records from "sales_previous"otherwise give me all records from "sales" (Sales_Previous would last yearssales data for example).udf_TableLookup would I guess lookup in sysobjects for the table name andreturn the table object? I don't know how to do this.I want to do this to avoid having 2 stored procedures..one for current andone for previous year.Please respond to group so others may benfiit from you knowledge.ThanksErik

Inserted Table ?

Nov 3, 2005

Trying to get my head around this table:

I thought it contained all data used in an insert; meaning if i enter a row in a table the inserted table should then contain all data entered?

Ive created multiple tables linked via primary key Learner_ID this key is unique to any/all students and can never be duplicated hence i thought i would use it to link the tables.

I have tables Fab / Main / Elec / Learner_info / WS_WR.

For Fab / Main / Elec the only data i need form Learner_info is the Learner_ID field, i simply used:

INSERT INTO FAB(Leaner_ID)
SELECT Learner_ID
FROM Inserted

as a trigger to insert the ID into these tables. Everything works perfectly fine. So i assumed that i would be able to use something very similar to insert say:

Learner_ID, FNAME, LNAME, ONAME and C_NUM from the learner_info table into the WR_WS table. Apparently i was wrong I can insert the learner_ID perfectly but if i then try to add another insert trigger eg: insert fname i get an sql error:

Cannot insert the value NULL into the column 'LEARNER_ID', table 'swdt_im.WS_WR'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.

Now from reading the error it suggests to me that because the second trigger is running my learner_id value has become a NULL. Obviously a primary key wont accept this value so the statement fails.

What im struggling to understand, im sure i will solve the problem eventually but i would apreciate help, and this is most important to me rather than a solution is this:

If i enter data into a row on a table does that data go into the inserted table in the same row? or does the data go into inserted as a single entry row, meaning when i tab along from learner_ID into FNAME does Learner_ID become row 1 (in inserted) and FNAME the current row? or do they go into the appropriate columns?

I was under the assumption that i could enter:

LEARNER_ID / FNAME / LNAME / ONAME / C_NUM

into one table and have a trigger insert those values into multiple other tables. Dont suppose someone can help me out im alright querying a SQL db but ive never had to develop anything other than a single table one myself before

Thanks in advance

How To Find An Inserted Value In A Table

Apr 19, 2006

Hello,
I have 2 tables, and use objectdatasource and stored procedures, with sql server.
Let say in the first table I have IDCustomer as a datakey, and other records, and in the second I have the same IDCustomer and CustomerName.  I have an INSERT stored procedure that will create a new record in the first table (so generate a new IDCustomer value), and I would like to insert immediately this new value in the second table.
How can I know the value of this new IDCustomer ?  What is the best  way to handle that ? Once the insert in the first table is done should read it the table and extract (with an executescalar) the value and then insert it in the second table ? This solution should work but I am not sure this is the best one.
Thanks for your help.

Inserted Table When Inserting

Mar 10, 2004

Hi,

Now thanks to you good folks on here, I have recently found out that when inserting data into table, there is a system table which can be queried with triggers - specifically called "Inserted".

What I am wondering is what are the limitations of what I can do with the data in this table?
I know I can query it from within the trigger, but can I update data specifically in this table before it is inserted?
(ie IF field1 FROM inserted = 'blah' UPDATE inserted SET field2 = 'something')

If so is there anything that I need to look out for? Concerns? Etc?

Thanks in advance for your help

Cheers

Special Table Inserted

Aug 2, 2007

Hi,

I am building my after update trigger. The code snippet looks like this:

DECLARE Curs_PrimKey CURSOR FORSELECT * FROM Temp_PrimKeyOPEN Curs_PrimKeyFETCH NEXT FROM Curs_PrimKey INTO @P_KeyWHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0BEGIN EXEC('INSERT INTO Temp_Value SELECT '+ @P_Key + ' FROM inserted') SELECT @P_Key_Value = (SELECT PValue FROM Temp_Value) EXEC('DELETE FROM Temp_Value') SELECT @P_Key_Insert = @P_Key_Insert + @P_Key + ' = ' + @P_Key_Value + ', ' FETCH NEXT FROM Curs_PrimKey INTO @P_KeyENDCLOSE Curs_PrimKeyDEALLOCATE Curs_PrimKey

You must know that in the trigger after update there is a special table called inserted. From the code above you can see that I am trying to loop all primary key which is included in Temp_PrimKey. Based on the key I want to select the value from table inserted. If I update a row in the table it gives error:

"No row was updated.

The data in row 13 was not committed.Error Source: .Net SQLClient Data Provider.Error Message: Invalid object name 'inserted'."

I am guessing that if we EXEC the query it is not execute inside the trigger environment, hence it doesn't find the table 'inserted'. Can anybody tell me how to work around this? Thanks.
