Back Up And Restore Using Transaction Log And Incremental Backup

Feb 1, 2001

hi, I would like to know the correct reaction for a crash in both senarios.
First senario,
I made a full back up at 6 am , then scheduled sql server to make transaction log back up every 2 hours (8,10,12,2 pm,4,6,8) . If I have a crash at 12:30. How would I resotre the data in the first senario....Can I restore the full back up done at 6 am then restore the last transaction log backup ( which is 12 Noon ) . I am not sure If I need to resotre the whole tran from 6 am till the time it was crashed.

Second senario,

I made a full back up at 6 am, then scheduled sql server to make Incremental backup every 2 hours (8,10,12,2 pm,4,6,8) . If I have a crash at 3:00 pm. How would I resotre the data in the second senario. ....Do I restore the full backup at 6 am then restore each incremental backup backwords ( 2,12,10,8)

AS you can see, I am not sure how to deal with this issue, I do appreciate your feedback.

Best regards

Ahmed

Is It Possible To Restore From A Database Backup Without A Transaction Log Backup?

Oct 14, 2007

I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).

Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.

Thanks!

SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 Server x64.

Restore Of Transaction Log Backup

Apr 18, 2008

Hi All,
I am facing one problem.
My Testing Server is down. I have taken full backup 1 hr backup. After that i have taken additional 5 TL backups. All the backups were moved to different server.
Now DB Server is corrupted. Now i have to rebuild the Database Server from the available Backup and TLog Backup.
But i have reliased that all the Transaction Log backup are having no naming convention in File name.

I am wondering after restoring full backup, which tlog backup i should use for next restore.

Thanks in advance.

Backup/Restore In Transaction Rep

Feb 29, 2008

Actually instead of creating initial snapshot ,I thought of doing Transaction Replication in 2005 with backup/Restore. Everthing worked fine for DML changes which is being replicated to subscriber.
But my question is:

1)In 2005, DDL changes also replicate by default, Why i am not getting that feature while doing tran rep with backup/Restore?

Any replication Experts?

Backup And Restore(full + Transaction Log)

Mar 10, 2008

I have this database "DB1" which is in FULL recovery mode.

I run full daily backup -Monday to Saturday
DB1_Mon.bak
DB1_Tue.bak
DB1_Wed.bak
DB1_Thur.bak
DB1_Fri.bak
DB1_Sat.bak

Come Sunday - for the first time I have run transaction log backup.
DB1_Sun.trn

And now, I need to restore DB1 - but the only full backup that I have is the Monday - "DB1_Mon.bak"

Is my database complete if I restore only "DB1_Mon.bak" plus the "DB1_Sun.trn"?

Does An Incremental Backup Include Deletions?

Jun 25, 2002

Does an Differential Backup contain all the changes since the last full backup, including Inserts, Updates, and Deletions. Our DB has "Truncate on Checkpoint" = True, so Log backups are non-sensical. I want to apply the Differentials to an archive, offline DB.

Implementing Incremental Database Backup

Apr 11, 2007

Hi,

I am working on one application, which retrieves data from multiple tables in the database and all the fields retrieved, are exported as an excel sheet. All the export functionality is done through DTS. And the data is retrieved using an SP.

I am supposed to use an "incremental backup" approach here. Means, for the 1st scheduling of the package, all the database dump will be there in excel file. But, after that only fields that are updated/inserted are to be filled in the excel file. Each time, when the dump of the database is taken, the excel file is stored in an archive folder with Date and tiemstamp(e.g. TEST_11_04_2007_15_00_00.xls)

e.g. For the first dump, I get 100 records from the database. Before next execution of the package, 10 rows get inserted and 1 row gets updated. So, on the second time execution of the package, I should populate the excel sheet with those 11 rows only, and not 110 records.

I am not authorised to change the database schema.
So, is there any approach to try out this?

Full And Incremental Backup Question

Jun 14, 2007

1) We are doing Weekly Full & DAILY night incremental backup of TL using Veritas Backup Manager to Tape.

One day I took Incremental Backup of TL file manually using studio and deleted the backup file.

Will I able to restore completed if something happens on next day ? Is automated backup takes care of Incremental backup from last night instead of manual interim backup ?

What is the recommendation ? If automated backup is enabled, we should not do manual backup ?

2) In Full Recovery Modek , If I do full backup , Does it backup Transactional Log also or only Datafiles ?

Thanks

Transact SQL :: Backup / Restore Tools Which Can Restore Multiple Environments

Jun 25, 2015

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments.  Here is high level requirements.

1.  We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database.  When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2.  I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.

I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup.  I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible.  We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

Back Up And Restore Problem

Aug 11, 2006

Hi All,

I have a problem that I haven't been able to solve it. At the end I am confused I need some clarifications.

Background:
I am using full back up recovery plan. I am getting daily full back up and every 15 minutes log_back up. I created these back ups by using Database Maintenance option. However I have been trying to restore the log_back up, but I couldn't achieve it.

Question1- When I take log back up do I have to activate "Remove inactive entries from transaction log" or not??

Info: When the log back up was done it deletes the latest 4th one. I have done this without no reason. Should I keep like that or should I allow the files being deleted right away after transaction logs backed up?

Question2- I cannot restore the log files I don't know why? I have followed every description that I read. After I restored full back up with NOREOCVERY the database hangs out says "loading" but it doesn't do anything and when I try to restore it doesn't accept the latest log back up file and it urges me to put newer file than I have but ıt is only latest log back up that I have Why does this happen?

I am so confused. Please help me

Thanks

HELP!!! Can Not Restore Database From Only Back Up I Have

Jul 10, 2006

I had to transfer my database from one server to another. Both are running SQL 2000. I backed the database up and moved it to the new server however when I try to do a restore I get the following message:

The media set for database "xxx' has 2 family members but only 1 are provided. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

I did some searching and found a couple of posts that mentioned something about the back up including 2 files.

My problem is that the machine I backed this up from crashed when it was shut down and would not reboot so all of the data and the original database do not exist. Is there any hope of restoring this database. It is pretty critical.

Thanks,

Melissa :-)

Transaction Not Rolling Back

Mar 19, 2007

I have a stored procedure that calls another stored procedure with thefirst stored procedure opening a transaction:BEGINSET XACT_ABORT ONBEGIN TRANSACTIONdoes various updates/insertscalls 2nd stored procedure to proccess updates/inserts common to manyother stored proceduresdoes more various updates/insertscommitENDThe problem I'm having is that within the 2nd stored procedure is thatif it encounters an error, it does not roll back the entiretransaction and I finish up with missing records in the database. Amusing this in the 2nd stored procedure:if(@TypeId1 = @TypeId2 and @Line1 <'' and @Line2 <'')beginRAISERROR('error message', 16, 1)RETURNendWhat could the problem be? From what I've read, it seems as thoughyou can't have an open transaction within one sp that calls another spand it maintains the same transactoin? Is this corrrect?I tired the following too, and I still couldn't get it to work. Anyideas anyone?************ sp 1 ***********Declare @AddressError char(3)SET XACT_ABORT ONBEGIN TRANSACTIONexec Sp2@AddressError OUTPUT,@variable1,@variable2,etc. etc************** sp 2 *****************@AddressError char(3) OUTPUT,if(@TypeId1 = @TypeId2 and @Line1 <'' and @Line2 <'')beginRAISERROR('error message', 16, 1)RETURNendSET XACT_ABORT ONBEGIN TRANSACTIONprocess updates/insertsSet @AddressError = 'no'Commit******** back to sp 1************If @AddressError <'no'BEGINrollback transactionENDcontinue doing updates/insertscommit

Rolling Back Transaction

Jun 16, 2007

Hi,

I have a case where I read from SQL Server DB and write to a flat file.

I have one Data Flow Task inside which I have a OLEDB source component that feeds rows to a script component that writes to a flat file. I have set the txn attributes for the container to "Required" and "Read committed" . But I find that rows are written to flat file even when I throw an exception from my script component. Question is how do I prevent rows from being written to the flat file if error/exception happens. I want the whole process to be in a single transaction.

Thanks
