How To Integrate An Independant MDF File Into Sql Server Express?
Sep 30, 2007
Hi,
i have a MDF sql server express database used by an asp.net application (located in local dir App_Data on the same computer as the Sql server).
I would like to integrate it into Sql Server express. I mean: NOT only attach it, but transform it as it was created direclty into Sql server and not in Visual Web Developper tool.
In Studio Management, i rightclicked on Databases and i took 'Attach'. Now i
can see and manage that database from Studio Management, but it still refers
to the local path of the MDF file. I see that by doing this query: select * from master...sysdatabases
Hello, I would like to know if anyone here has any information on how to change the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express which ships with Visual Studio 2005 to the new SQL 2005 Express SERVICE PACK 1?
I see a file under disc:vswcuSSESQLEXPR.exe I am wondering if changing that file with the new one from Microsoft Download Center will do it...
There's another file under that folder named sqlexpr32.exe I am wondering what it's for?
We have Lots of databases wich typically have three Trasactional Publications and two subscribers. Some DB's use a shared distribution Agent for all three Pubs whilst some DB's use Independent Agents. The reason for this set up seems to be purely by chance.
BOL says "Sharing the same Distribution Agent reduces the resource demands and increases performance at the Distributor". Whilst some resources on the net say "IF you use independant Agents, you can get performance improvements while replicating your data". This seems to be conflicting information.
I know I should go with BOL but having seperate distribution streams does make more sense (although I now have three jobs per subsciber instead of one using this method). Also more importantly, if one publications fails with dodgy data then this does not affect the other Publications. What do other people think?
I need to integrate some tables from SQL server 2008 to SYBASE SQL(FLUKE METCAL). SQL Front-end Dynamics AX and Metcal backend is SYBASE SQL. I prefer SSIS to achieve this task.
How to integrate SQL Server Business Intelligence Tool into ASP.Net web Application. Anybody can send the answer for above one it is great help for me, just I want to open this tool through >net application and I can able to create some reports from there.
Hi, I was sent a .bak file which I need to open and place in sql server express. I googled this but did not come up with any clear instructions. Can some please give me a good link that explains this. Thanks
Hi all, I have the "Northwind" database in my Sql Server Management Studio Express.
In my C:ProSSEAppsSamplesForChapter02Chapter02 folder, I have the following 2 files: (1) ListColumnValues (MS-DOS Batch File) sqlcmd -S .sqlexpress -v DBName = "Northwind" CName = "CompanyName" TName = "Shippers" -i c:prosseappschapter02ListListColumnVales.sql -o c:prosseappschapter02ColumnValuesOut.rpt (2) ListColumnValues (Microsoft SQL Server Query File) USE $(Northwind) GO SELECT $(CompanyName) FROM $(Shippers) GO When I ran the following SQLcmd: C:ProSSEAppsSamplesForChapter02Chapter02>ListColumnValues.bat I got the following "ColumnValuesOut.rpt" with error messages:
'Northwind' scripting variable not defined. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Server L1P2P3SQLEXPRESS, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near '$'. 'CompanyName' scripting variable not defined. 'Shippers' scripting variable not defined. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Server L1P2P3SQLEXPRESS, Line 1 Incorrect syntax near 'CompanyName'.
I copied these T-SQL statements from a book and I do not know how to correct them. Please help and tell me how to correct these errors.
Hi,My webhost (1and1) is running SQL Server 2000 and their web tool supports the import of .bak files. However, when I try to import my .bak files created in SQL Server Management Studio Express I get the following error:"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally."I have Googled this error and learnt that 2005 .bak files are not compatible with 2000 .bak files. I'm just wondering if there are any work arounds to this or alternative tools that I can create 2000 compatible .bak files from from 2000/2005 .mdf files.Thanks in advance.
Hi, i'm still rather new to sql server and sql server express. My problem is that I have 50 fixed width files(actually was LIS file type, converted to txt using notepad). Each text file has about 50 columns of data. What would be the best way to get this into sql server db?
Is this even possible? I tried to move an existing Sql Server Express .mdf file to SQL Server 2000 by copying the .mdf file to the server's folder and then tried to attach it. I get:
Error 602: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 9, object ID 1, index ID1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes.
I realize that I'm moving back a version in SQL, however the structure of the database is very simple. Does anyone know?
Even if I can just script the thing to SQL 2000 would be helpful, however the .mdf is a file within my ASP.Net site, and does not show up in my Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express under the appropriate SERVERNAMESQLEXPRESS either, so I can't figure out how to script it out?
Hello Everyone, I am trying to restore a bak file which came with code for a tutorial. I think it is safe to restore, but sql server 2005 express has the following problem when I try to restore it. I'm a newbie to databases so if you could provide a step-by-step answer that would be best. Thanks in advance. Robert
Hi All, I have a .sql file with all my queries written in it. Now I want to know, Is it possible to run this sql file in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition like we can do in Oracle? If it is possible then tell me how to do it?Thanx in advance for any kind of help.Regards,Paramhans Dubey.

Hi All,I have an asp.net 2.0 app that needs to bulk load data from an xml file into a Sql Server (Express) table. Is there an easy way to do this?Thanks,Claude.
We have a file based asp.net app built using Visual Web Developer and Sql Server Express 2005. We have finished development and testing and are now moving to the deployment stage. As a first step, we would like to be able to view it on a test machine using IIS (instead of VWDs built in web server). We have created a virtual directory in IIS and can view our app correctly at http:localhost/ForIIS_test.
However, when we get to a page that tries to access our Sql Sever Express database, we get the following error: An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsClaudeMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSitesForIIS_testApp_Data estDatastore.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. Does anyone know how to overcome this problem? Any help appreciated. Claude.
Hi Guys, how many connections does sql 2005 express allow to .mdf file. I stumpled on info on a microsoft site (actually a forum post on msdn) that sql server express allows only a single connection to an .mdf file. Iam intrested in this because i developed reporting services reports in BIS and iam having problems. If i run a report from report manager, i have to wait for close to 20 minutes before i can be able to run my asp.net application agian. Else if i insert data or retrieve data from my asp.net application, then i have to wait again for 20 minutes or more before i can be able to run my reports else i will get an error that a connection can not be made to the database or that the database is being used by another process. So in all cases, i have to wait for 20--30 minutes before a connection can be made to the .mdf file. i.e after running a report or after inserting or retrieving data from the database through my asp.net application. Iam using sql sever 2005 express with advanced services and visual web developer on windows server 2003. Any ideas or help.
All -- Please help. Is it possible to connect to MDF file without having SQL Server 2005 Express installed on the machine? That is-- can one connect directly to an MDF in the same way and Access MDB file can be used? If no, then is there any way around this? If yes, then are there any limitations? Please advise. Thank you. -- Mark Kamoski
HiI had to recover my computer but before I did that I grabbed a new version of my mdf file but I don't know how to actually import it into SQL Server Management Studio Express evertime I try to open the file up it just crashes. I rather not have to redue that whole database again. I am a noob so step by step instructions are needed. Thanks
I am new to SQL Server, and migrating part of an Access application toSSE. I am trying to insert a comma delimited file into SSE 2005. I amable to run a BULK INSERT statement on a simple file, specifying thefield (,) and row () terminators. I can also do the same with aformat file.Here is the problem. My csv file has 185 columns, with a mixture ofdatatypes. Sometimes, a text field will contain the field delimiter aspart of the string. In this case (and only in this case) there will bedouble quotes around the string to indicate that the comma is part ofthe field, and not a delimiter.Is there any way to indicate that there is a text delimiter that isonly present some of the time?If not, any suggestions on getting the data into SSE?Many thanks for your input.Cheryl
I attached a SQL database called Cars, using the following code:
Code Block
IF NOT EXISTS( SELECT * FROM sys.databases WHERE name = N'Cars' ) CREATE DATABASE Cars ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataServer FilesCars.mdf') FOR ATTACH GO
I then copied the .mdf and .ldf to another folder, using Windows Explorer.
I then attached the database using the new folder name in my code.:
Code Block
IF NOT EXISTS( SELECT * FROM sys.databases WHERE name = N'Cars' ) CREATE DATABASE Cars ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataNew FolderCars.mdf') FOR ATTACH GO
Now when I go to update my table, I see that I am hitting the .mdf in the new folder.
And, when I do my table updates, I see that I am hitting the .ldf in the old folder.
Two questions: 1. What did I do wrong, that updates are hitting the new .mdf, but the old .ldf? 2. How do I control what .ldf SQL Express uses?
I see references to 'SQL Server Agent' in the help pages, but do not see 'SQL Server Agent' within the application.
I see the reference to the old folder path, within the 'Database Properties Files page', but no possibity to edit the value.
Hello, I have correctly installed sql express 2005 onto my company server. I can connect to the sql express 2005 fine within sql management studio express. I can also connect to it the within visual studio 2005 server explorer. I have my database (MDF) on our server. I am trying to run my application within my client computer. I have changed the connection string property to connect to the server:
My program will only work if there is a local copy of MDF database located within my application directory. If I remove the local copy, it errors "No process is on the other end of the pipe" Is it possible to have my application without the local copy of the MDF? I thought the idea is to have the MDF on the server. Then my app would not have the MDF copy!?
Now i am using Sql Server 2005 Express Editon SP2 to store data . Now the log file of this database is too big that use alot of disk space around 500MB . Now i want to clear this log file .do any one know how to clear this log file in the sql server 2005 express edition SP2 .
I hope you all friends will help me to solve this problem .Thanks
as I'm relatively new to Sql Server Express, I have a few questions regarding best practices for data handling.
In my ASP.net Application I thought it might be of high value to create the database as mdf file in my vs2005 project, so I could easily copy the database with the project.
Now inside VS2005 I have the problem of not being able to create any SQL Statements other than queries. For example simple create table statements and such seem not to be possible if I don't want to use the designer.
So I attached the mdf file to my Sql Server Express in Sql Management Studio Express. But here I seem not be able to detach the file again when I made some changes. Only option is to delete the whole thing.
So my questions are:
1. Is it somehow possible to send simple sql statements to a sql server express database from Visual Studio 2005? 2. How can I detach an mdf database file from Sql Server Express once I have attached it with Sql Management Studio Express? 3. Should I use a different approach to my problem?
I am using the following C# code to establish a SQL connect to a SQL database file:
// connection string // attach a SQL database file to a local SQL server express instance string _connectionString = @"Server=.SQLExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf; Trusted_Connection=Yes; User Instance=True";
// using System.Data.SqlClient; SqlConnection _sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(_connectionString); // open the connection _sqlConnection.Open();
// do something
// close the connection _sqlConnection.Close();
So far, the connection works fine.
However, next, I want to copy the database file to another folder. So the following codes: // source database file name string sourceDatabaseFileName = @"C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf"; // target database file name string targetDatabaseFileName = @"D:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf"; // copy database file System.IO.File.Copy(sourceDatabaseFileName, targetDatabaseFileName, true);
Then the program came with runtime exception: "IOException was unhandled: The process cannot access the file 'C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf' because it is being used by another process."
Is it because the database file was sill attached to the local SQL Server express instance? What can I do to bypass this problem? Detach the database file? or dispose the local SQL Server express instance?
