Installation :: Inaccessible Boot Device Resetting

Aug 10, 2015

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 a little over a week ago, and was experiencing a few issues, so I decided to do a reset, choosing the option to keep files yet remove apps and settings. The reset reached 100% and the PC restarted, but I got an "invalid boot device" error saying that the system must restart. After restarting, all that appears is a black screen, with no options available. I've tried numerous keys but nothing happens. The computer just sits on a blank screen.

I have a Gateway SX2110-UB25 that is merely two years old, that came with Windows 8 but upgraded to 8.1 prior to upgrading to 10.

Inaccessible Boot Device After Resetting Laptop Asus N550jk Cn015h

Sep 16, 2015

I have a laptop Asus n550jk cn015h with the original windows 8.1 license. I passed to windows 10 few weeks ago and I tried to completely reset it to fix some problems I had. I used the windows 10 reset function and there wasn't anything plugged. It took a couple of hours then it just turn off.when I tried to turn it on it appeared the blue screen page with inaccessible boot device but the laptop is not restarting as I learnt from people having the same problem,it just says that it's gonna restart but it turns off. Every time I try to restart the laptop it always appears the blue screen page and it turns off after a few seconds.

Error - Inaccessible Boot Device

Aug 20, 2015

the other day I realized I had a keylogger on my PC. I decided to use the windows 10 feature to wipe my HDD, deleting all the programs and installing win10 fresh again. After being finished with the restore, I booted my pc and was greeted to a message that said: something went wrong blah blah, with "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" being the subtitle. I've tried rebooting my computer numerous times but no results. I've tried changing boot orders and shit in BIOS settings, to boot from USB but that didn't work either..

BSOD :: Inaccessible Boot Device And Error Code 0xc0000001

Nov 28, 2015

I had a pretty much faultless Win 10 setup with all the latest patches installed then this morning I connected an external USB hard drive which I had used several times before but this time Windows said it needed to install a new driver. I let the driver install and then Windows stated it needed a restart to complete the installation.

When restarting I received the "Inaccessible_Boot_Device error message - Windows will restart for you" message. On restarting again I got: "Your PC couldn't start properly. Error code 0xc0000001." Windows tried to automatically repair itself displaying the Diagnosing message first and then Attempting Repair message, and finally reporting it could not fix the problem. I'm not sure if the new driver being installed created the problem or whether it was just a coincidence and something else has caused the fault.

I was able to boot to Recovery using a USB stick created with Microsoft's MediaCreationTool. Safe boot and all the other startup options didn't do anything apart from resulting in yet another failed boot. Getting to the command line, I was able to view the file that Windows creates when it tries to repair itself: c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttail.txt. That file shows that all tests were completed successfully until:

"Root cause found. A patch is preventing the system from starting
Repair action system files integrity check and repair
Result failed error code 0x490"

I tried: sfc /scannow and got:

"Verification 100% complete, Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"

I then tried sfc /verifyonly and got:

"Windows resource protection found integrity violations. Details are included in the cbs.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."

As the message suggested, no cbs.log files were created.

I have tried:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

which all complete successfully but doesn't work.

Also tried chkdsk which didn't find any errors and:

bootsect /nt60 ALL

which again seems to complete successfully but doesn't work.

Laptop Start Up With Error Inaccessible Boot Device After Reset

Aug 16, 2015

I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. After experiencing some problems I thought the laptop might run faster if I simply reset it. I picked the option to remove all personal files since everything is backed up anyway. After resetting my PC boots up, goes to a blue screen where it says it can't start up with the error "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" then restarts and does this process again.

My laptop has pretty good specs so it should have been running faster than it was and I am now stuck as to what to do.

Drivers/Hardware :: Hard Drive Inaccessible After Upgrade (Apps Stored On Drive Run)

Jan 14, 2016

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.

System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.

Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.

(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.

Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.

Inaccessible Boot Device

Aug 18, 2015

Ok recently my pc has been crashing like crazy and I got tired of it so I decided to reset my pc (I have windows 10) but after I did so it would try to restart and it kept saying it ran into a problem (INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE) and it would reset again and it would keep doing that in an endless loop.

So I figured all the crashing before was because of motherboard. Gigabyte ATX Socket AM3+ AMD 970 Chipset. So I recently bought a new motherboard.A MSI 970 Gaming mother board. But its still keeps showing the screen that keeps saying it ran into a problem (INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE) in a endless loop. Does this mean I need a brand new clean hard drive that doesn’t have windows installed on it so it can act like a brand new computer or what?

Inaccessible Boot Device On 64bit With RAID 0

Sep 22, 2015

My current hard drive is failing and, since I have two brand new identical hard drives lying around, I decided to do a RAID 0 set-up. I went into the BIOS and set SATA 1-4 as RAID and 5-6 as IDE. I left the Raid ROM as Legacy. I then went into the RAID set-up and turned both hdds into a RAID 0. I then inserted my usb stick with Windows 10 and started the installation process. The installer saw the raid without any issues, installed windows, and then rebooted. Unfortunately, it was at this time the error in the title appeared. No matter what I did, it would not stop producing the error. Even attempting to boot to my previous hdd (which was not included in the raid set), would produce the same error. The only way to stop it was to turn off the raid and completely remove all of the raid set partitions. This allowed me to boot into my old drive at least.

Installation :: Inaccessible Boot Device - Black Screen

Sep 10, 2015

CPU/GPU: AMD A10-7850K
MOBO: MSI A78M-E35
SSD: SanDisk Plus 120GB
RAM: EVGA 8GB 2133MHz
PSU: EVGA 80+ 430W
Monitor: Acer G237HL bi

I installed Windows 7 Home Basic and did all Windows updates; this went fine. Reserved Windows 10 and downloaded/installed it when it was ready; this went fine. Once in Windows 10, tried to "reset this pc" by choosing "remove everything" and "just remove my files"; this went fine until doing a restart after reaching 100%. This issue being the "inaccessible_boot_device" error that many others have gotten which causes the PC to enter a restart loop.

Well, during this loop I made the (apparent) mistake of turning off my PC. Now, I can't even boot my PC at all. I get a black screen. I can't use the Windows 7 disc, can't use my MOBO disc, can't even boot into bios... nothing. All I see when I turn on my PC is literally a black screen with nothing on it.

What can be done to fix this? I've read that putting Windows 10 on a USB by using the Microsoft media creation tool and booting from that to clean install works, but if I can't even boot from the Windows 7 disc, how can I boot from a USB? And I can't even enter BIOS to force a USB boot.

My PC will now boot into the "inaccessible_boot_device" error blue screen and does the restart loop. Not sure what I should do now. I'm afraid to power off my PC again.

Not sure why, but I was finally able to boot into BIOS. My only guess would be that, maybe when I tried(but failed) to remove my MOBO battery, just from me wiggling it caused it to reset? Idk.

Anyway, once in BIOS, I changed boot priority to DVD and was able to access reinstalling Windows 7. I am right now reinstalling Windows 7, on Disk 0 Partition 2(if that matters. wouldn't even allow me to install on partition 1 or 3).

So, from the looks of things, everything is back to normal? I should be able to finish reinstalling Windows 7, do the updates and redownload/reinstall Windows 10 without issue? Though, this time I will NOT attempt to "reset this pc".

I'm back into Windows 10. So, I'm still not sure why I was finally able to boot into BIOS, but once I was able to, I changed DVD boot drive to top priority and was able to reinstall Windows 7 from the disc. I then did all Windows Updates. I then downloaded the Windows 10 ISO and mounted/installed it with Virtual Clone Drive. I am now back inside Windows 10, hoping nothing else goes wrong.

BSOD :: Inaccessible Boot Device After Reboot From Update

Oct 16, 2015

I can not provide a crash log or a screen shot because I can not get past the Repair/Diagnose loop.

My Windows 10 pro has been running just fine until yesterday when I did an update. After the update and reboot, I get stuck in a loop stating the system cant start because of "Inaccessible boot device". It goes thru a process of restarting itself and self diagnostics and repair, but it keeps looping without fixing itself. I do get to select options such as boot up in safe mode but it wont, it goes back in that loop. I can boot into the Bios, I have an SSD that has always been set to ACHI mode, and it is. I just cant get out of this loop?

The only fortunate thing is that I have backup image files, so I do a quick secure erase of the SSD and reload the image fresh. All goes well until I do the Windows update, then reboot into this problem. I disabled Updates for the moment and spent a lot of hours on Google and YouTube, nothing I found so far has worked, so I figured I would try a fresh start here.

Installation :: Moving To RAID 0 - Inaccessible Boot Device

Oct 8, 2015

I am converting an existing Windows 10 Pro laptop to RAID 0 - and I keep getting to the final boot where it says INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. What am I doing wrong? The laptop has two 1 TB Samsung 850 SSDs that are identical. Laptop is a HP Zbook 17.

Here are my steps:

1. Made a good System Image of C: drive on separate external SSD drive connected by USB. D: drive didn't have anything on it to be saved.
2. Used Win 10 Pro DVD to delete all partitions/format drives.
3. Went into BIOS and changed from AHCI to RAID, and also to turn on ability to do Control-I to get to Intel RST ROM.
4. Rebooted, did Control-I, created a RAID 0 of the two disks.
5. Rebooted, installed Windows 10 fresh. Verified it would reboot on its own.
6. Rebooted, went into Repair on Windows 10 DVD. Selected external SSD image to do image restore from.
7. Rebooted - verified on Control-I that the RAID 0 array is listed as "bootable"
8. Rebooted - get INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

The place it dies - I see the little Windows 10 blue window, and the spinning circle at the bottom - then I get the blue screen with the message.

Drivers/Hardware :: External Hard Drive Is Inaccessible

Oct 24, 2015

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I use to store (majority) videos and documents. A few days ago it started giving me this error for every folder and file, and eventually just from trying to access the hard drive itself from This PC:

And this is what shows up in Device Manager:

In Disk Management, this is what shows up at first (first image) and then when I refresh Disk Management through Action > Refresh (second image):

As for specifications wise, I clean installed to Windows 10 Pro N x64 (a day after this error came up when I plugged in the hard drive, actually... Not sure what I was thinking at the time) with what I think are updated drivers for my hardware from the manufacturer's websites. Previously, it was a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro x64 after upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro x64.

Not sure if this is worth mentioning, but, all my folders and files show up when the computer actually can read the hard drive, I just can't open any of them. I've never had to deal with hardware problems before. I really don't want to lose the files in that hard drive, as I'm not able to make a backup even if it was working (with it being my biggest external to date).

This is what the hard drive shows on Speccy at a glance:

(Is the serial number and firmware version supposed to be the same on all hard drives? )

Installation :: Cannot Boot PC After Resetting

Aug 5, 2015

I upgraded my Windows 7 Home Basic to Windows 10 yesterday. It was successfully activated. I loved the UI and animation. But I could not sign into my Microsoft account, hence could not use Cortana or sign into store. I got "Something went wrong" error all the time. Multiple reboots did not solve the issue.I decided to reset my PC completely and proceeded without keeping anything though it warned me "This might take several hours". My PC got stuck at 99% for like 4-6 hours. I kept it at that stage the whole night.

When I woke up this morning and saw, my PC had a blue screen error saying "We will restart your PC INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". This error is existing after multiple reboots also.

The two options I can think off:

1. Rebuild my Windows 7 all over again and upgrade to Windows 10 (I am afraid it may not solve the problem).
2. Do a clean install of Windows 10.

I don't want to do the first. Is there anyway I can claim the same license that I already have for Windows 7 in second scenario? I don't mind losing the existing Windows 7 license if I get one for Windows 10.

I tried using the Windows 10 "Reset this PC" feature hoping that it would install on my SSD, but it installed on my old hard drive. Is there a way I could do the reset again and have it install on my SSD or do I have to move my Windows over a different way?
