I have a problem with Cortana not opening after pressing the mic button on the taskbar and "Hey Cortana" does not work also. This is a clean install of windows 10 on a Lenovo laptop, I had no problems with Cortana before.
View 9 RepliesIs there a way to stop the middle mouse button (i.e. click of the scroll wheel) from opening Cortana/search?
Things I've tried:
1. Searched Google. No useful results. The closest I found was that Windows 10 may be confusing the click of the middle mouse button as the 3-finger tap on the touchpad - which opens Cortana/search by the default. But I don't have a touch pad. I have the Toshiba PX30T (Toshiba Qosmio PX30t 23 inch Touchscreen All-in-One PC - Black/Silver (Intel Core i3 3120M 2.5GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVDSM DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8 64-Bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories).
2. Tried re-configuring the middle mouse button in (a) Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Mouse & touchpad, (b) Control Panel > Mouse, and (c) my desktop's manufacturer's System Settings utility application (upgraded just now from their website). Interestingly, none of those three configuration tools had any control setting for the middle mouse button.
It is obvious that Windows 10 doesn't "fully" support the wireless mouse that comes with my PC.
Is there a way to "unbind" the middle mouse button from opening Cortana/search? For example, via the Registry Editor - maybe?
Soon after downloading Windows 10, problems started emerging. Nothing happens when I click on the the icons for home, cortana, connecting to the internet, or power. It is impossible to establish an internet connection, the troubleshooter "couldn't identify the problem". The audio service is also malfunctioning.
I tried to run a recovery, but was unable to do so, as "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working". I ran sfc/scannow several times, and the result is that it "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".
I have my Windows 10 for around 3 days now, the thing is, in the second day after my computer froze when i was playing counter strike, everything in the task bar but my shortcuts stopped working, they dont open anymore, but when i click it, the cursor blue loading circle shows up but nothing happens.

View 1 RepliesSo, last week I upgraded my Toshiba L850-161 from Windows 7 to 10. Since the upgrade my laptop now starts up as soon as the lid is lifted, without me pressing the power button to start the computer. I am shutting the computer down via the start menu.
I thought this problem may be caused by the fast Start-Up in Windows 10, but my friend also uses this feature on his laptop but he still needs to press the power button to start-up.
I then did some research and found the Panel Open - Power On software included by Toshiba. I checked to see if this was activated but it was disabled by default.
I'm a bit stuck here. According to my settings my laptop shouldn't start when the panel is opened, but it does, and I don't want it to. I'd rather start my laptop the old-fashioned way - with the power button.
When I press the physical eject button on my laptops DVD drive Windows 10 completely locks up. Tray doesn't open either. Frozen cursor, ctrl alt del does nothing. I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button down. Going to My PC, right clicking the drive and selecting eject does work though. ASUS K65DE running Windows 10 Enterprise, clean install several months ago. Almost never use the optical drive so only just noticed this recently. Other than this Windows runs normally and the drive is usable. Device manager shows nothing out of the ordinary. Worked fine in Windows 8.1. Stock Windows supplied drivers used on all hardware.

1. I can click the 'Change' button in Privacy, Location, but nothing happens. ('Location is off' is displayed)
2. 'Location' is greyed out in the Action Centre
3. The Network Location Service is running
(I've tried stopping, starting it, restarting the PC).
then I discovered
4. Cortana does not appear in Toolbars (rt click taskbar)
5. The response to clicking Cortana in the start menu is to go to Store, Downloads and updates.
(Cortana was working a while back- I thin I turned it off at some point)
I have changed some things in Privacy, and tried to undo those. Everything else seems fine. I'm guessing I've turned sthg off or changed an option somewhere.
At some point my "All apps" button has stopped working. Clicking on it causes the apps list to flash very very briefly then dumps me back to home screen. Everything else seems to work OK.
Where the links in that list of apps is stored? I'm thinking one of the links is broken causing the whole list to shut down, and if I remove links from the list one by one I can find it. That's the only thing I can think to try.
Unfortunately no restore points exist and Repair tools like Startup Repair Etc.
The left-click on my Start icon has stopped working and several reboots have not resolved the situation. My Windows key doesn't work either. I cannot launch Edge either. I'm running Windows 10 Home on a new Dell laptop.
What the heck is going on and how do I fix it? I've got apps that don't appear on my desktop which I am completely unable to use now.
For what it's worth, I can right-click the Start button since my latest reboot but I can't left-click it. (On the previous reboot, I couldn't right- or left-click it.)
I need this machine working ASAP because I use it for my job and my shift just started!
A friend of mine recently upgraded to Windows 10 with the free upgrade, and his Cortana randomly opens up to the point that he can't type properly.
He's tried disabling Cortana, stopping WSearch service, ending SearchUI.exe, etc.
Nothing is working...
I just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.
Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again.
No "start" button" and something is always running in the background and I am afraid it is taking all of my information even though I said no. I do not want Cortana and it keeps trying to make me go there. How do I stop this? Do we HAVE to have 10?? Is 7 going to be like XP and not be supported? As I xannot gegt to "all programs", cannot delete anything.
View 1 RepliesMy windows 10 button, cortana, and google chrome won't work. The image for Microsoft edge and the windows store on the taskbar are black now and also won't open. I tried using the scan in powershell and it said that it couldn't find any problems. Also I believe my Nvidia drivers need updates but they also won't open it says it had to close. I already used malwarebytes to check for malware. I'm not sure what to do its been working for the whole time I have had windows ten which has been a decent amount of time but it just yesterday started this.
View 5 RepliesI have tried everything under the sun to fix this. The search/Cortana button on the taskbar is unresponsive. Whenever I try to adjust setting under Cortana & Search I get this error:

The app didn't start
I'm currently running Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo ThinkPad.
I have the Get Windows 10 icon showing. When I click it, it takes me to the Upgrade Now button. So far so good.
When I click the Upgrade Now button, I get the starting to download screen with the circle dots. After a few seconds, it then takes me to the Windows 7 'Windows Update' page in the control panel, where it says that 'windows is up to date'. And that's it.
How to get Windows 10 to upgrade? I've done other laptops without issue.
I have had this issue for a while, any way to restore these. The Cortana Live Tile and Cortana entry in the All Apps section are both missing so I cannot re-add the Live Tile back.

View 4 RepliesThis actually started back in build 9926. The left third of my screen shattered, so I moved the taskbar over to the right edge, and as soon as I did Cortana just stopped working. Her symbol changed to the generic search magnifying glass, she won't open when prompted, and neither will her settings in the settings app.

View 1 RepliesMicrosoft states that Cortana is available in the UK. My region and language (including input) are set to UK, which is where I currently am, and yet I am unable to enable Cortana. In the 'Cortana and search settings', I get the message "Cortana isn't supported in the region and language you've selected". I have configured my microphone for speech input.

(honestly i didn't care in the past, so i don't it's a normal beahaviour) -loggin in as administrator i can use the search and find settings like "system restore" or "personalize" -loggin in as limited user, no matter if local account or microsoft account, i can't search for settings and i get the message "incomplete" on top of the window... but all documents, images, start menu entries, etc. are showed perfectly. i googled around, but i couldn't find what happens to me. solutions are for completely broken search service. even create a new account or recreate the index didn't work.. is it normal for limited users?!? bug?!? i don't want reinstall again
View 5 RepliesStart Menu doesn't work upon clicking. Task Manager works when system first boots but then goes into "Not Responding" mode, doesn't work either. Cortana/Search doesnt work. Currently cant click icons on desktop either. Right click doesn't seem to be working either
Third party apps like games seem to be working fine oddly enough.
Tried a system restore, system restore failed. Tried reinstalling windows apps via powershell, command ran for a really long time, before I got the "Server Execution failed" message. Have tried creating a new user, new user creation via "Manage User Accounts" tends to hang again. Have tried running below from cmd, returned with no errors.

Have run a malware check, returned negative.
Have run the windows troubleshooter, got a message "Fix or work around emerging issue 67758"
Getting this message right now:: ms-settings personalization-background => This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.
I haven't performed a clean install of Windows yet on my system, as I am trying to determine if there's any way to fix this problem without formatting my disk.
Have loaded Windows 10 to both desktop and laptop. Desktop works fine, but laptop comes up with something like 'not in correct area to accept Cortana'. As both machines are in the same building I don't understand!!
View 2 RepliesI believe that is what is causing the 'critical error'. I uninstalled the software and upon reboot my start button and cortana were working perfectly again. Now I'm sure you all know how to uninstall software on your PCs but it may not work in normal mode with the critical error as it didn't with me. Therefore I uninstalled in safe mode. Incase you arent familiar with how to access safe mode on windows 10, heres how: You press ctrl+alt+delete, and in the bottom right hand corner you click the power button. Before you click 'restart', hold down the shift key until the next screen is displayed (blue). Then click troubleshoot, advanced options, start-up settings, restart. Once it restarts, press the F4 key, and when it restarts you will be in safe mode. Now just do the normal thing to uninstall avast and then reboot following the installation and it should be fixed!
