Oct 12, 2015I have a new laptop, so unless this is some weird feature that's specific to the laptop, then I assume it's a Windows 10 settings issue because I've never encountered anything like this before. I downloaded several JPGs and PDFs from various emails and began to change the arbitrary "234809238ksdfjskdfjsdlkf" type filenames to specific things indicating what they are, and I got done and realized all the stuff I typed was gone and the JPGs had changed to "filename(1)", "filename(2)", "filename(3)" and the same with the PDFs.. and "filename" was the name I'd assigned to the first file of each file type. The subsequent names I'd chosen were entirely different and the files were all unrelated to one another.

Sep 21, 2015Basically my story is, my previous laptop had a motherboard failure and I had some things on the hard drive that I wanted to recover. So I purchased a new laptop, put a ssd in it, installed windows 10, then I had a hard drive caddy lying about so I took out the optical drive of the laptop and installed the hard drive from my previous laptop with the assumption that I just take ownership of the drive and drag my stuff across to the (C: ) .
But after installing the hard drive successfully, it's now showing as the (E: ) it doesn't have all the files on it from my previous setup, instead it has the exact same files as the (C: ) . It's like whatever happened windows deleted the files and replaced them with the exact same files as the (C: ) ?I have a wordpress website on that drive that I really need to recover but absolutely no sign of any files from my previous windows 10 setup.
Why Does Abbreviate File Names
Oct 15, 2015I've used Linux for about five years and just switched to Windows 10, and it seems that file names are being abbreviated by the new system. This was obvious when I copied some document files to the new system, and not recognizing my files is rather disorienting. I know that DOS had a limit on the number of characters in a file name, but I can't believe that's still the case. Is there a way to show the full names, or did Windows do a permanent rename?

Oct 23, 2015I had user names set up for myself, my daughter and my husband but all have disappeared except the Microsoft account I used when setting up Microsoft 10. I can't find any of the pictures or documents from those files either.
I have already gone to the control panel and checked users and they are not there. All of my photos were under my daughters user name.
Desktop Shortcut Icon Names
Jul 30, 2015I have factually just installed windows 10, given it the time it required and let it load.
First, my mouse was missing and the desktop icon names were white with clear centre of the words.
So I restarted my factual laptop. I regained my mouse however the desktop icon shortcut names under the icons themselves still remain see-through without the usual black colour.

Nov 15, 2015I have a back up of files & folders that I come from my previous Windows 7 system (same machine - I upgraded to W10) that I am not ableto restore and I really need them. My system is the following:
HP Pavilion DV7-6b32US laptop/notebook
64 bit
16GB RAM
2 internal HD (1 is the original 500GB and the other is a 1TBdrive divided into two equal partitions in the NTFS format
The back up was done using Windows 7 built in feature/utility and I am trying to restore the folders with their files to my Win 10 but I keep getting the error "short names are not enabled on this volume" with the code 0x80070131. I have done my research which pointed me to answers pointing to this: "to manually enable 8.3naming after formatting you can use fsutil.exe from the command line: fsutil 8dot3name set d: 0 (d: is the drive partition on my 1TB NTFS driveI use for my data where I am trying to restore the files to. The only thing I haven't done is the formatting for two reasons, 1 - it is already formatted and 2 - I have a TON of data already on the drive that I cannot lose.

If I put a usb stick in with or without data then go to file explorer it shows a double entry for the usb stick. If it contains data it shows up the same in both entries. Duplicate Icon In Taskbar?
Aug 3, 2015One of my pinned items on the taskbar (MusicBee) refuses to act properly. It always shows two instances of the icon when the program is open.
I tried unpinning the items, opening the program from it's folder and then right-click > Pin to taskbar but that creates a duplicate icon as well.
I also checked C:UsersMYNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar for duplicate shortcuts but there is only one.
Why To Get Duplicate Notifications For Twitter
Aug 15, 2015Experiencing duplicated notifications with certain apps, such as Twitter? I'll get the original popup above the taskbar clock, followed a few seconds later by the same notification. And both are listed in the Action Centre. But in the new Twitter app itself, only the original appears.
I've tried disabling then re-enabling notifications, also uninstalling then reinstalling the app, but the issue remains. Can't find it being reported anywhere.
Cannot Duplicate Displays After Upgrade
Sep 3, 2015I have a Dell XPS 15 L502X + IN2020M_Digital monitor connected via laptop’s HDMI port. Graphics is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M. I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and I can no longer Duplicate the displays.However, PC Screen Only, Extend, and Second Screen Only will work.In Device Manager I have uninstalled both the IN2020M and the Generic PnP Monitor and restarted. They were added back but no change.I basically confirmed that the monitor is not the problem because I also can't Duplicate the displays when a projector is connected via HDMI.

Apparently it stops hackers from gaining control of your machine. However, this caused a problem as I have an 256gb SSD system disk and, I think, the duplication has used up too much space, causing problems with programmes like Dropbox.If I delete the 2nd User account will I reclaim some space? If a programme is mounted on both accounts does it take up twice as much space? And, finally, is the security issue still relevant with Win 10?All my data is stored on other hard drives, so that's not a problem.Only the programmes are duplicated.

Feb 10, 2016I have some issues with the metro apps in Win 10. They don't open, and have unusual names. This actually started a couple days ago when my taskbar and start menu wouldn't open. While browsing the web, I saw exact same issue get told to enter a powershell command and he replied saying it fixed it. The command in particular was:

Long story short, It did anything but fix it, and gave it messed up names. I can click and click, but nothing shows up, even for a split second. I've tried to open an app from the .exe inside System32.
File Names In Left Panel Of File Explorer
Aug 8, 2015I just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?

Next, my user name is displayed twice and I click the top one and enter my PIN number and I'm logged in. I would like to delete the second user name display.

May 9, 2015Have been working with Build 10074 for several days. Just realized yesterday that my main user folder has duplicate sub-folders (2 Documents, 2 Music, 2 Videos, 2 Downloads, 2 Pictures). They are the same size, have the same properties). Whichever one I delete, makes the other one unusable, where there is an error message like it doesn't exist. Is this a Registry problem? Now I am dual-booting on this particular installation with Windows 7.
When I boot into Win7 and access that User folder, it only shows SINGLE entries, no duplicate. What can I do? I have thought of creating a new user, moving my files into those new sub-folders, then deleting the original user. However, the main user with the duplication is a Microsoft account as opposed to a local account. So that complicates everything.
