Performance :: Windows Search And Indexing Broken

Jan 5, 2016

After upgrading to TH2 I had an issue with windows search. The service wouldn't start at all.

I managed to run the Windows Search service.

I had to delete the Key RebuildIndex and change value of key SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 1.

Now that the search service works I have another problem. The indexing is not working:

In Advanced options the Index Location is blank and the button Select New is grayed out.

When I run the troubleshooter I get : Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories -- Not fixed

The owner of folders C:Program DataMicrosoftSearch and C:Program DataMicrosoftSearchData is SYSTEM.

Administrator and my user name are added with Full Control.

What could be the problem?

Windows Search And / Or Indexing Broken

Sep 2, 2015

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have encountered an interesting problem. I realized it initially when I would press start and begin to type a program's name in order to run it, as I was doing with Windows 7, but it would not find any results and would prompt me to Google the program. I found it strange but didn't think much of it.

Once I started looking into the issue, I noticed when I go to Indexing Options it says "Indexing is not running." When trying to rebuild indexing, it gives the message about how it will take a while, and then does nothing. So I decided to look into Windows Search.

Windows Search is not and will not run. First: If I go to services.msc and try to start the Windows Search service, it tells me that "The Windows Search service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

So I tried through an elevated cmd prompt: "net start wsearch" gives me error 15:

"C:WINDOWSsystem32>net start wsearch
The Windows Search service is starting..
The Windows Search service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 15 has occurred.
The system cannot find the drive specified."

Finally, and perhaps the strangest thing, one post told me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search SetupCompletedSuccessfully and change the value to 0. However, the only thing in the registry under Windows Search is a Preferences folder. There are no keys there. So to me it looks as though Windows Search does not currently exist on my computer.

So of course I run sfc /scannow. Unfortunately, it tells me:

C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

How To Revert Back To Windows 7 With A Broken Start Menu

Aug 19, 2015

want to switch back to Windows 7. However, my Start menu doesn't work. This proves to be very problematic, because the Settings menu within the Start menu seems to be the only path to reverting back to Windows 7. I've tried a few times to get my start menu back in order to restore Windows 7, but nothing I've tried has worked. Here's what I've tried:

(1) Entering a special command in Windows PowerShell [URL]..... Didn't work.

(2) Creating a new account with administrator privileges. Start menu works, but I can't use it to revert to Windows 7. I'm prompted to delete all other accounts created after the upgrade before reverting back to Windows 7.

(3) Accessing the Settings menu from within the Control Panel. Settings menu doesn't seem to be accessible from the Control Panel.

Is there a way to go back to Windows 7 without using the Start menu? I would rather not have to go find my original product key for Windows 7 and reinstall it, but if that's the only way, so be it.

Apps :: Windows Store And Apps Broken / Missing

Mar 5, 2016

So, a few weeks ago, I started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Steam and every time I would exit the game my volume icon and my start button became unclickable. I searched the web for a solution and found a PowerShell solution. It worked, but it only fixed the problem until I decided to play again.

A few days ago, I went to open up my camera app and a screen would open up for 1 second and close. It also happened when I tried to open up the Windows Store.

"@{Microsoft.WindowsStore_2016.27.2.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe?ms-resource://Microsoft.WindowsStore/Resources/StoreTitle}"

I've tried everything except system restores. I never set up restore points and that's my fault. I really don't want to spend hours downloading all my games and programs again. I also don't want to spend money on a external hard drive to make backups of everything. If I have to, I will. Hopefully there is a quicker and easier fix. I don't understand why there just isn't a uninstall and reinstall option for the Windows Store.

Well, here is a screen shot I made of my issue. I've read through a few other posts about Store errors, I think mine is different than most of the other ones on here.

Performance :: Search Can't Find Anything (even Calculator)

Sep 20, 2015

I upgraded my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit install to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (build 10240 from "winver") last month. The Start Menu search, ever since I upgraded, has always been really slow at finding things, but now it's died. I have a pretty decent, but old laptop: i7-2670QM quad-core, 8GB DDR3, GT 555M, Plextor M3S 256GB SSD. The SSD is a tad full (15GB free), but it worked fine on Windows 7.

Nothing is found: the search is perpetually stuck on those 5 loading dots, even when I search for "control panel", "windows update", or "calculator". This is after waiting 30 seconds:

I've tried:

Rebooting - no change
Rebuilding the search index - no change ("278,754 items indexed. Indexing complete.")
Adding "Program Files" & "Program Files (x86)" to the search index - no change
Turned online results off - no change
Turned Cortana off - no change
Ran the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) - no errors found
Ran a virus scan (Avira Free), a malware scan (Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Free), and I use an exploit blocker (Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free). All detected 0 viruses/malware/exploits.

What is the issue here? I would've thought finding the dang Calculator app should've worked! The File Explorer search is working fine. Just the Start Menu search is dead.

Indexing Doesn't See Files?

Mar 5, 2016

I've got a lot of PDF's in my User directory, which according to the Indexing service has been indexed (and it says it's done and has indexed thousands of files). PDF's are set to search file properties only. When I search for any of the PDF's by name though I don't find them. I've tried rebuilding the index and no luck. According to the Indexing settings (default) it is indexing the users folder.

Indexing Options Keeps Reverting To Default

Aug 21, 2015

I have been trying to set my Windows 10 Home 64-bit computer to index only the Start Menu but not anything else (such as IE Favourites, Documents). I know exactly where all my documents are; the only time I use search is something like, I press the Win key, and type in cmd, or ccleaner, etc. So I really only need Windows to index the start menu.

However, every time after reboot, if I go into Indexing Options they will just revert back to default. Is there a way I can make the changes stick?

i still want to be able to search files when searching from antoher places, just not when searching from the start menu, so disabling the index is not an option for me.

Indexing Options Vanished (after 10586 In Place Repair Install)

Dec 27, 2015

I don't use Windows search normally, but today had reason to look for Indexing Options in the CP. No sign. Yes, things are being indexed. Yes, the service is running.

So could I invoke Indexing Options some other way?

control.exe srchadmin.dll

- nothing.

Now when I looked for srchadmin.dll, I only found this in Windows.old. Really?

control.exe <path to windows.old...>srchadmin.dll opened indexing options.

is this dll missing a consequence of having done an in place upgrade install?

Windows Search Only Searching Web And Store

Sep 2, 2015

I have 2 machines running windows 10, and it seems like a lot of struggle of late. My latest problem as of this eve on my downstairs machine, is that Windows Search seems to be confined to just the store and web. Meaning, if I click on search and type in firewall, it will lead me to a couple options in the store and the rest of the options are up on the web. Same if I punch in notepad. It won't search locally for some reason.

Search Applications When Pressing Windows Key

Jul 18, 2015

In Windows 7/8/8.1 I would press the Start/Windows button and start typing the name of a program (ie: Firefox, Word, etc) and it would pop up, learn, and as I did the same thing in the future.....I would just press Windows key, type wor, and Word would pop up and I press enter. Don't need to take my hands off the keyboard.

Windows 10 does not do that. I type Word and get Wordpad. I type Firefox and get 'Download Firefox - Free web browser', Secure (for SecureCRT) give me 'SecureCRT (file folder)', even though these apps are installed. Is there a way to put the apps in the search?

Windows Search - Files Not Shown

Sep 16, 2015

I have some HDDs connected through SATA in my PC and in one of them, I stored my files. Included that path in Indexing service, Windows can't show me the file I search.

Instead, if I search a file or a folder stored in my DropBox folder for example, (under C:usersEmanueleDropbox) the windows search show it immediately.

Some example.

If i want to search a file or folder stored in D:, windows search not show any file....
If i search a folder in indexed in C: all works fine.

I tried to rebuild index too many times.

Windows Search Not Opening Folders

Nov 12, 2015

Up until a few days ago when I clicked the windows key and typed C:projects (or any folder) and clicked enter that location would open. This is no longer working. I can still open applications but I can't open any folder locations. Is there a settings somewhere for this?

After more testing, when I hit the windows key and type C:projects and hit the enter key....Nothing happens. However if I do the same procedure but instead click on C:projects with my mouse the folder opens. So it seems only the enter key won't open the folder.
