Clustering, Virtual Sql Servers And Client Network Aliases

Oct 31, 2006

I have a question regarding the nature of virtual sql servers, specificially what protocol is used to communicate to the server when a request is made by a client.

For example, if a scheduled job is run on the virtual sql server, what determines the protocol used (e.g. TCP/IP, named pipes etc.) by SQL Server agent? Is it the client network alias set up on the virtual server?

I am asking because currently the client aliases on some of our virtual sql servers are using named pipes and I think this is causing a problem with our backups.

Thanks,
Adrian.

Sql Client Networking Alias Dissapears

May 21, 2004

I have a network of all win2000 machines. The server is win2000 and is a domain controller running sql 2000. I've been having intermittent problems with our software staying connected to sql and found that installing the sql client networking package fixes it. The problem I'm having is that users with admin rights work just fine, but users with just user rights aren't. I set up client neworking by moving named pipes above tcp and setting the alias to the sql server but the user machines doesn't remember the alias.
Here's a list of what I've tried:

log in as admin and enter alias

create .reg file of proper registry settings and import but got a key is in use error, cannot import registry

created shortcut to cmd and set shortcut to run as diff user, log in as admin, run .reg file, imports fine, alias still missing in user computer.

Any ideas what might make the alias not stick? The users cannot install software and there might be some other security setting or restriction keeping it from sticking but I have yet to find it.

The Script Threw An Exception : Keyword Not Supported: 'network Port'.

May 29, 2008

Hi All,

I need to refresh my cube daily and once this processed is done, i will update in ETL table with lastcubeprocessedtime in my timestamp column. Actually i am using IBM db2 provider since my ETL table resides in IBM DB2 source.

In my first task i am using script task where i will check whether my timestamp column value is NULL or not.

I am getting error like "The script threw an exception : keyword not supported: 'network port'." when this script task executes.

Moreover i am getting another error like "The execution succeeded, but the number of error raised(1) reached the maximum allowed(1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number of specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix this errors." For this error i have changed MaximumErrorCount value from 1 to 100 in dataflow task.

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem for these two errors?

Thanks in advance

Can Profiler Display Port Number?

Where - in SQL Server Profiler - can I see the port number that someone has used to connect to a database?

e.g. given the connect string "tcp:MACHINE1INSTANCE7,3045" - where in Profiler does it tell me that the connection is using port 3045? I looked at "audit login" and "existing connection" but I don't see a port number...

Any other SQL/Windows tools that I can use to monitor connections to databases on specific ports?

Finding Port Number In SQL Server 2005

I know the ..Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGErrorLog on the server contains the information. But that needs I to RDP to the server or open the file remotely. Is there any other way to find out the port from my SSMS connection?

I remember in SQL Server 2000 you could find the information by choosing Properties of a connection in EM and click on the Network Configuration button. (I know it works when you are ON THE SERVER! But when I tried from my desktop, pressing the button didn't do anything)

MS SQL 2000 TCPIP Port Number And SQL Replication

Jul 20, 2005

Hi allI'm struggling to find an answer to this one! We've configured our SQL boxes to run under a different port number,e.g. from 1433 to 4533. This works fine under our Citrix enviornmnetwhere the dsn is configured to use the new port. The problem comes interms of SQL Server management. For example, when you try andconfigure SQL Replication, it is not possible to add the subscriberunless the SQL Servce runs under port 1433, the default port. Thesame goes when you try to add the server as a registered server withinthe Enterprise Manager MMC.Does anyone know how you can configure SQL Server to run under adifferent port number, without naffecting SQL REPLICATION, etc? Many thnaksNikJoin Bytes!

SQL 2005 Unattended Install TCP Port Number

Oct 19, 2007

Hi All,

I am having an issue with SQL 2005 unattended install, I cannot see where in the template.ini file you can specify the TCP port number for SQL 2005 to listen to I want to change it to a specific port number, I know you can do this in an unattended install on SQL 2000.

Also in an unattended install of SQL 2000 and 2005 is there any way you can specify the database and transaction logs location for new databases to be installed on another drive then the system databases. I know you can change this later in SQL server properties but I wanted this to be done during the install or is there a T-SQL script which can do this after?

Any help on this will be great.

Cheers

Programatically Create A DSN For SQL-Server With Non-standard Port-number

Apr 16, 2007

Hi all,

I have to create a DSN for SQL-Server. Therefor I use the function "SQLConfigDataSource" from "ODBCCP32.DLL". But the problem is that the SQL-Server does not use the Standard-Portnumber 1433. I've tried to make the DSN with "SERVERNAME xxxx" where xxxx is the Portnumber, sometimes it works, but often it does not. When it does not work, then the Checkbox in the ODBC-Configuration-Tool is checked, so the connection is searching for the standard-port. How can I tell the system that it shall NOT use dynamic configuration?

Thanks for help,

Franz

Network Servers?

Aug 4, 2006

I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express along with SQL Server 2005 Express in my Win2K Pro m/c. The installation went off smoothly.

My server name is "ADSQLEXPRESS" where "AD" is my m/c name. When I open Management Studio Express for the first time, the "Connect to Server" dialog opens up wherein the "Server name" under the "General" tab shows "ADSQLEXPRESS". When I click the dropdown list & click the "Browse for more" option to browse for more servers, the dialog titled "Browse for Servers" opens up. This dialog shows 2 tabs - "Local Servers" & "Network Servers". Under the "Local Servers" tab, "Database Engine" is listed. When I expand it, the server name "ADSQLEXPRESS" is listed.

Under the "Network Servers" tab again "Database Engine" is listed but when I expand it, I always find 2 more than 2 network servers listed where one of them is my ISP (Internet connection provider) but where from are the other servers getting listed? I just don't have any connection with those servers. This is the first time I am seeing those server names.

Moreover the problem is after installing SQL Server 2005, my m/c is getting affected with Trojans now & then. Fortunately my anti-virus (AVG 7.0) takes care of it but I did like to just get rid of those extra network servers since I am pretty sure that one of these network servers (not the one which is my ISP) is the source of Trojans in my m/c since the Trojan attack began only after I installed SQL Server 2005 in my m/c.

Can someone please guide me how do I delete the offending network servers from the list?

Another strange thing is that the names of the network servers (except for the one which is my ISP) listed when "Database Engine" is expanded under the "Network Servers" tab in the "Browse for Servers" dialog go on changing everyday but the Trojans are always named in this format: eraseme_XXXXX.exe.

where X is any integer which goes on changing. For e.g., they will be named as erase_63728.exe or eraseme_23709.exe or eraseme_35412.exe etc..

Somebody please help me out of this predicament.

Thanks,

Arpan

Client Network Utility...

Nov 9, 2000

I'm getting errors in EM when trying to connect to one of my registered servers. When the Client Network utility is using TCP/IP as the default protocol I get:

A connection could not be established to xxxxx - General network error. Check your network
documentation. ConnectionOpen (connect())...

But if I switch to use Named Pipes I connect just fine.

This worked just fine up until last week.. We're going through Tokenring to Ethernet conversions.. Is this a bigger network issue?

Thanks..
