How Do I Copy / Insert A Primary Key Value Of One Table Into Another Table?
Dec 10, 2007
Hi
i have set up two very simple tables, I want a user to be able to create a basic account ( data stored in User_Profile table with Id set as the Primery Key as Identity) I
want the user to be able to be able to return to their account at a later date
and then post multiple reviews of different bands they have seen at a later date.
I kept the tables in my example very simple so I could get my head
around the concept, but generally, I want to connect the Id (PK) value in
User_Profile table to the User_Id filed in the User_Review table,
so every review that user writes, will be connected directly to their Id.
Any help you could give would be fantastic a i have no idea where to start!!!
User_Profile
Id int, ( as primary Identity Key)
Name
City
Country
I have a second table called User Reviews
User_Revews
Revew_Id int , ( as primary Identity Key)
User_Id int, ( I want this to contain the Id value in
the User profile Table)
I would like to insert into a table with a primary key that has a uniqueidentifier. I would like it to go up by one each time I execute this insert statement. It would be used as my ReportId My VB code is this. Protected Sub btncreate_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btncreate.Click 'set connection string Dim errstr As String = "" Dim conn = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True") 'set parameters for SP Dim cmdcommand = New SqlCommand("sprocInsertNewReport", conn) cmdcommand.commandtype = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmdcommand.parameters.add("@UserName", Session("UserName")) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Week", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Date", vbDate) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@StartTime", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@EndTime", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@HeatTicket", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Description", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@TakenAs", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Dinner", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Hours", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Rate", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@PayPeriod", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@LastSave", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Submitted", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@Approved", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@PagerDays", vbNull) cmdcommand.parameters.add("@ReportEnd", vbNull) Try 'open connection here conn.Open() 'Execute stored proc cmdcommand.ExecuteNonQuery() Catch ex As Exception errstr = "" 'An exception occured during processing. 'Print message to log file. errstr = "Exception: " & ex.Message Finally 'close the connection immediately conn.Close() End Try If errstr = "" Then Server.Transfer("TimeSheetEntry.aspx") End If My SP looks like this ALTER PROCEDURE sprocInsertNewReport
Hi, I'm not user to inserting data into databases, usually I just read the data. So I think my problem might be pretty common.I have a table of longitudes, latitudes, city names, and country names. I set the primary key to be the columns longitude and latitude. I have a method that generates the user's location and the mentioned data. So I want to only insert the new data into the database if it is new and unique. currently if the same user goes to my site, it inserts the data fine the first time and then throws and error the second time because it is inserting duplicate primary key information. Do I need to query the database to see if the data record already exists? or is there a way to insert the record only if it is "new"?? Thanks for the help!!
I'm trying to do multiple insert statements. The table looks likethis:CREATE TABLE $table (CNTY_CNTRY_CD char(3),ST char(2),CNTY_CNTRY_DESCR varchar(50),CNTY_CNTRY_IND char(1),HOME_CNTRY_IND char(1),CONSTRAINT cnty_key PRIMARY KEY (CNTY_CNTRY_CD, ST))I'm using 2 fields for the primary key constraintMy insert statement looks like this:INSERT INTO $table(CNTY_CNTRY_CD,ST,CNTY_CNTRY_DESCR)VALUES(?,?,?)I've been through the list of values and none have both the sameCNTY_CNTRY_CD and ST and yet, this is the error message I'm getting:DBD::ODBC::st execute failed: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQLServer]Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'cnty_key'. Cannot insert duplicatekey in object 'event_CNTY_CNTRY_CD'. (SQL-23000)[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The statement has beenterminated.. (SQL-01000)(DBD: st_execute/SQLExecute err=-1)Why is it looking for unique in just the one column instead ofreferencing both? What do I need to do to get this to work? Help!
Hello, I have a Stored Procedure which insterts into Orders table. Orders table is the parent table, with primary key OrdersID. I also have a child table, Client, with foreign key OrdersID. I want it to insert the data into the orders table, and at the same time insert the OrdersID into the FK of the child table. Any info would be appreciated. I have no idea how to do it. My SP is as follows:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.jobInsert @ClientFileNumber varchar(50),@Identity int OUT
ASINSERT Orders(ClientFileNumber, DateTimeReceived) VALUES(@ClientFileNumber, GetDate()) SET @Identity = SCOPE_IDENTITY()
I am converting an old Access/Forms application to a .Net/SQL intranet site. The data was imported and most CRUD features are working. But, I have some data issues to contend with.For this example I have two tables, Cases and Parties. The Parties table includes a Column ReportID, which happens to reference the primary key of some unique Case. Lets say Bob, Sally, and Mary are all associated with ReportID = 2.Looking at the Case table, I see indexes (ReportID) 1,3,4,5, such that Bob, Sally, and Mary are orphaned with out a case to reference.
1. Is it possible to bypass the auto-increment for the primary key of Cases and manually inject the missing Case (ReportID) with a specific primary key of 2? See my image to fill in some of the details.It is too early to tell but perhaps 10% of the Parties are orphan without an associated ReportID in the Case table. This fact is one of the reasons it was decided to rebuild the application, which was also never able to produce any reports.
2. What is an easy way to find all the orphan Parties?
I suppose I could export the Cases table to excel, add the missing Rows, and then overwrite the defective Cases table data with the corrected data. I would rather learn to fix the data issues using the responses from this request.
In a special request run, I need to update locker and lock tables in a sql server 2012 database, I have the following 2 table definitiions:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Locker]( [lockerID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [schoolID] [int] NOT NULL, [number] [varchar](10) NOT NULL, [lockID] [int] NULL CONSTRAINT [PK_Locker] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED
[code]....
The locker table is the main table and the lock table is the secondary table. I need to add 500 new locker numbers that the user has given to me to place in the locker table and is uniquely defined by LockerID. I also need to add 500 new rows to the corresponding lock table that is uniquely defined in the lock table and identified by the lockid.
Since lockid is a key value in the lock table and is uniquely defined in the locker table, I would like to know how to update the lock table with the 500 new rows. I would then like to take value of lockid (from lock table for the 500 new rows that were created) and uniquely place those 500 lockids uniquely into the 500 rows that were created for the lock table.
I have sql that looks like the following so far:
declare @SchoolID int = 999 insert into test.dbo.Locker ( [schoolID], [number]) select distinct LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber FROM [InputTable] A JOIN test.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type and A.schoolnumber = @SchoolNumber JOIN test.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber not in (select number from test.dbo.Locker where schoolID = @SchoolID) order by LKR.schoolID, A.lockerNumber
I am not certain how to complete the rest of the task of placing lockerid uniquely into lock and locker tables?

Hi, I was wondering if you can help. In my vb.net form I am running a query to insert data from one database table to another. However what I need to do is to be able is to add the id of a record I have just created to this insert into sql command. I have managed to use @@ identity to get the id of my first sql insert statement but I am wondering how I can use it in the second insert into and select statement. At the moment my sql statement just copies exactly what is in the select statement. I can't figure out how to add the @@identity value to my second sql statement. My second sql statement is a follows: sql2 = "INSERT INTO ProjectDeliveData(ProjId,ProjDeliveId,RoleId,MeasurementId,ProjDeliveValue, ProjDeliveComments,ProjDeliveYear,FinDataTypeId, FinFileId, ProjDeliveMonthFrom, ResourceId,ProjDeliveDateAdded)" & " select ProjId,ProjDeliveId,RoleId,MeasurementId,ProjDeliveValue, ProjDeliveComments,ProjDeliveYear,FinDataTypeId, FinFileId, ProjDeliveMonthFrom, ResourceId,ProjDeliveDateAdded from ProjectDeliveData where FinFileId=" & strActualFileId I hope you can help Cheers Mark :)
The following dbo.Tables of Northwind.mdf in my .SQLEXPRESS (SQL Server Management Studio Express) are missing: dbo.Categories dbo.CustomerCustomerDemo dbo.CustomerDemographics dbo.Customers dbo.Employees dbo.EmployeeTerritories dbo.Order Details dbo.Orders dbo.Products dbo.Regions dbo.Shippers dbo.Suppliers dbo.Territories.
But, I have these dbo.Tables in a different Database "xyzDatabase". How can I copy each of these dbo.Tables to the another blank dbo.Table of Northwind Database?
I right clicked on the dbo.Categories and I saw the following thing: dbo.Categories New Table... Modify Open Table Script Table as |> CREATYE To |> DROP To |> SELECT To |> INSERT To |> New Query Editor Window File.... Clipboard UPDATE To |> DELETE to |> From the above observation,I think it is possible to copy the dbo.Table from the one Database to the Northwind Database that needs to be repaired. Please help and advise me how to do this task or tell me where I can find the Microsoft document that gives the details of this X-copy thing.
Thanks in advance, Scott Chang
P. S. I am using VB 2005 Express to create a project to learn "Calling Stored Procedures with ADO.NET" (see Paul Kimmel's article in http://www.developer.com/db/article.php/3438221) that needs the dbo.Tables of Northwind Database and my Northwind Database has been screwed up for quite a while and needs a big repair.
I'm new to SQL Server 2005 SSIS. I'm trying to do something very simple, but I cannot figure it out, PLEASE HELP!
I have a flat file, which I read and then insert the data in a database table, that works fine. The problem is that I don't want to insert duplicate records. For example; if I run the package again, it will appent to the table. What I need to do is that if the package runs again, check if the record already exist, based one two columns, date and hour, and do not insert the record.
I use the following 3 sets of sql code in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to import the csv data/files to 3 dbo.Tables via CREATE TABLE & BUKL INSERT operations:
-- ImportCSVprojects.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE Projects
(
ProjectID int,
ProjectName nvarchar(25),
LabName nvarchar(25)
);
BULK INSERT dbo.Projects
FROM 'c:myfileProjects.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO ======================================= -- ImportCSVsamples.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE Samples
(
SampleID int,
SampleName nvarchar(25),
Matrix nvarchar(25),
SampleType nvarchar(25),
ChemGroup nvarchar(25),
ProjectID int
);
BULK INSERT dbo.Samples
FROM 'c:myfileSamples.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO ========================================= -- ImportCSVtestResult.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE TestResults
(
AnalyteID int,
AnalyteName nvarchar(25),
Result decimal(9,3),
UnitForConc nvarchar(25),
SampleID int
);
BULK INSERT dbo.TestResults
FROM 'c:myfileLabTests.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO
======================================== The 3 csv files were successfully imported into the ChemDatabase of my SSMSE.
2 questions to ask: (1) How can I designate the Primary and Foreign Keys to these 3 dbo Tables? Should I do this "designate" thing after the 3 dbo Tables are done or during the "Importing" period? (2) How can I set up the relationships among these 3 dbo Tables?
I have created a table Table with name as Varchar and id as int. Now i have started inserting the rows like, insert into Table values ('arun',20).Yes i have inserted a row in the table. Now i have got the values " arun's ", 50. insert into Table values('arun's',20) My sqlserver is giving me an error instead of inserting the row. How will you solve this problem?
I'm inserting from TempAccrual to VacationAccrual . It works nicely, however if I run this script again it will insert the same values again in VacationAccrual. How do I block that? IF there is a small change in one of the column in TempAccrual then allow insert. Here is my query
INSERT INTO vacationaccrual (empno, accrued_vacation, accrued_sick_effective_date, accrued_sick, import_date)
For reasons that are not relevant (though I explain them below *), Iwant, for all my users whatever privelige level, an SP which createsand inserts into a temporary table and then another SP which reads anddrops the same temporary table.My users are not able to create dbo tables (eg dbo.tblTest), but arepermitted to create tables under their own user (eg MyUser.tblTest). Ihave found that I can achieve my aim by using code like this . . .SET @SQL = 'CREATE TABLE ' + @MyUserName + '.' + 'tblTest(tstIDDATETIME)'EXEC (@SQL)SET @SQL = 'INSERT INTO ' + @MyUserName + '.' + 'tblTest(tstID) VALUES(GETDATE())'EXEC (@SQL)This becomes exceptionally cumbersome for the complex INSERT & SELECTcode. I'm looking for a simpler way.Simplified down, I am looking for something like this . . .CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.TestInsert ASCREATE TABLE tblTest(tstID DATETIME)INSERT INTO tblTest(tstID) VALUES(GETDATE())GOCREATE PROCEDURE dbo.TestSelect ASSELECT * FROM tblTestDROP TABLE tblTestIn the above example, if the SPs are owned by dbo (as above), CREATETABLE & DROP TABLE use MyUser.tblTest while INSERT & SELECT usedbo.tblTest.If the SPs are owned by the user (eg MyUser.TestInsert), it workscorrectly (MyUser.tblTest is used throughout) but I would have to havea pair of SPs for each user.* I have MS Access ADP front end linked to a SQL Server database. Forreports with complex datasets, it times out. Therefore it suit mypurposes to create a temporary table first and then to open the reportbased on that temporary table.
I need to add a child table that will tell us who the participants counselor is, what I did was I did a Make Table query based off the primary key of the Parent table and made that the link (foreign key) for the People_tbl and the Counselor_tbl, so if the counselor changes then the user adds the record to the counselor tbl and then puts in the Effective date. The problem is that when I run a report it doesn't show the present counselor always shows the old counselor?
Code: SELECT Student_ind.StudentFirstName, Student_ind.StudentLastName, Student_ind.[Student ID], People_tbl.[Family ID], People_tbl.FirstName, People_tbl.LastName, People_tbl.[Parent ID] FROM People_tbl RIGHT OUTER JOIN Student_ind ON People_tbl.[Family ID] = Student_ind.[Family ID] WHERE (People_tbl.LastName = @Enter_LastName) AND (People_tbl.FirstName = @Enter_FirstName)
Previously same records exists in table having primary key and table having foreign key . we have faced 7 records were lost from primary key table but same record exists in foreign key table.
my stored procedure have one table variable (@t_Replenishment_Rpt).I want to create an Index on this table variable.please advise any of them in this loop... below is my table variable and I need to create 3 indexes on this...
Hi I have a table with a user column and other columns. User column id the primary key.
I want to create a copy of the record where the user="user1" and insert that copy in the same table in a new created record. But I want the new record to have a value of "user2" in the user column instead of "user1" since it's a primary key
PeopleID in People Table is the primarykey and foreign Key in PeopleCosts Table. PeopleID is an autonumber
The major fields in People Table are PeopleID | MajorVersion | SubVersion. I want to create a new copy of data for existing subversion (say from sub version 1 to 2) in the same table. when the new data is copied my PeopleID is getting incremented and how to copy the related data in the other table (PeopleCosts Table) with the new set of PeopleIDs..
I have a Users table that I use for membership. I am using username varchar(30) as the primary key for this table since username will always be unique.
The question I have is regarding how SQL Server actually stores data:
I see that when I add users, they are always stored alphabetically sorted on username.
I was expecting that all users will appear on the users table in the order they were added.
Example: I have 3 users (john, jonah, wilson). Now I added 4 user with username='bob'
If I execute select * from users, it returns me (bob, john, jonah, wilson). Look bob has become the first row of the table.
My question: Is Sql server moving 3 older rows to make room for 'bob' and it is also rebuilding part of the index due this new username 'bob'?
If this is the case, then it will have big impact if I have 100K users and I add one user that becomes firstrow. In that case 99,999 rows will have to move.
Bottom line, insert, delete will be very expensive.
I know sql server keeps data physically sorted on PK. But I am concerned here since rows are losing the order in which they were inserted.
Hi allI have two tables in SqlServer with Exactly Same Structure,I want to Copy all Records fromone of them to another one.I came across to "Insert....select..." statement But i have two problem 1) I don't know any thing about Columns name!!! i just know they have same structure and as far as i know , "Insert...select..." need the Column list to operate correctly, am i right? 2) these two table have One Prinary Key column with IDENTITY feature. Any Help Greatly appriciated.Regards.
Hi, All, I have agentID in product table. Now I add agentID column in transaction table. Now I want to copy all agentID from product table to transaction table based on the order_id in both table. Can you show me an example? Thanks Betty
table2 is intially populated (basically this will serve as historical table for view); temptable and table2 will are similar except that table2 has two extra columns which are insertdt and updatedt
process: 1. get data from an existing view and insert in temptable 2. truncate/delete contents of table1 3. insert data in table1 by comparing temptable vs table2 (values that exists in temptable but not in table2 will be inserted) 4. insert data in table2 which are not yet present (comparing ID in t2 and temptable) 5. UPDATE table2 whose field/column VALUE is not equal with temptable. (meaning UNMATCHED VALUE)
* for #5 if a value from table2 (historical table) has changed compared to temptable (new result of view) this must be updated as well as the updateddt field value.
I need to copy existing row data from one table into a new row in a different table, both in the same database. Can this be done in a stored procedure where the selected row is passed in as parameter value? Thank you,
Hello everyone, I have a local MSSQL server (I guess it's called MSDE), with some tables that I would like to use as a template for a set of new tables. I would simply like a Stored Procedure that takes these 3 tables, makes a copy of their structure (not data, since they will be empty), and name them by using a parameter given to the SP. I have made something that I thought would work, but after testing it a bit more, it seems to forget default values for the fields, which is of course not good enough :). I hope that someone can tell me how to duplicate these 3 tables, including every detail for the fields!
Hi.Like the title says - how do i do this?I was given the following example:INSERT INTO TABLE2 SELECT * FROM TABLE1 WHERE COL1 = 'A'The above statement threw the following error:An explicit value for the identity column in table 'TABLE2' can onlybe specified when a column list is used and IDENTITY_INSERT is ON.Then, after filling in all the column names in my above selectstatement I kept getting an error to the effect that the number ofsource and destination columns don't match. This is because one column"confirm_hash" does not exist in the destination table, just thesource table.could somebody show me how to get this to work?thanks!PS - MS SQL SERVER EXPRESS 2005
