An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File (file Location).../Database.mdf Failed. A Database With The Same Name Exists, Or Specified File Cannot Be Opened, Or It Is Located On UNC Share.
Sep 2, 2007
Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.
I know allot of folks are having this problem and I tried lots of things but nothing works. I understand the problem is coping the SQL Express on another server is the problem - I just not sure what to do?
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.42
This is the last statement on the Stack Trace:
SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file e:wwwdata81d0493fwwwApp_DataTestDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.] System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +735091
I checked my server forum and they said I had to name a database: Example: Database=(unique name);
But this didn't work either.
I just tried a simple web project that has only one database and one table in SQL Express with one sqldatasource and one datagrid. It works fine on my pc but when I use the copy function in Visio Studio 2005 Pro - I can't run the site on the remote server: www.myjewelrydirect.com
I tried coping the database manually. I tried disconnecting the database before I copy it. Below is my connection statement:

Hi I have a problem when I want to open a page with the database record. This page is created in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. I have been playing with a Standard Version of VS 2005 and SSE 2005 and I just cannot get these two to interact together well. I am sure it is a noob problem but I have seen this error addressed on this forum and I am just not getting it. Here is exactly what I am doing.
I want to create a database within SSE using the Management Studio. Then, I want to connect to it with VS2005. Both SSE and VS2005 are local. I just cant seem to get this to work.
I always seem to get this error "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataSecond.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
One thing... I create the website with Location: HTTP. I don't even know anymore why I do this.. I think because I like to be able to pull up a browser and get to my app. Other than that I am doing nothing special. However, I get the above error when I hit F5 to run the app inside VS2005.
Is there someplace where a complete noob can find a thorough and simple covering of this? Again, I have read through some of the previous posts on this and I don't understand too many of them and it seems as if there are at least 13 causes of which I don't know which one I have. Help!
I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.
Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)
I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).
I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.
The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.
The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.
I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.
So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:
Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...
Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.
So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.
EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:
I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.
I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.
Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.
EDIT - MORE INFO
The error details

I build a WebApp which i use the default DataBase that come with the App_Data folder. I have Users and roles into that folder with all my tables regarding my new App. Why i cant make it work under IIS on my webserver ? When i open it with Visual Studio everything works but outside of it nothing. An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file c:inetpubwwwrootSurveyApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf; I look arround and cant find a thing on how to fix my issue. I try deleting the Folder under my User Account for SQL Express and nothing happend.
I've read through all the posts in this fourm that are related to the problem I'm getting with this error message on my main form, but none of the fixes seen to solve the problem. So I hope someone can get me pointed in the right direction.
I'm running visual studio 2005 professional, and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and this is a desktop application. I added the db file to the solution with the Add New Data Source wizard, I can create the datasets and preview the data correctly.
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdbInventory.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
When I run the program the exception is throw in the Settings.Designer.vb code, Public ReadOnly Property for the connection string. The InnerException is this...

I've just created my first projects using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005 Express. This is the basic;
One windows service is created that updates a database. The windows service running under "Local system" account One windows application where a user can see data (and change) from the database A common business and dataaccess layer/project is used by both applications Connection string to the database: "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|DataDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=60;User Instance=True"
Both application is located in the same directory. When the computer starts the windows service starts and works perfectly. But when a user starts the windows applications the following error is reported "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file..A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share".
It look likes that only one of my application can connect to the database at a time!
Is it possible to use separate applications to connect to the same database file?
I have seen some solutions of which I tried on this form for the error I am receiving, but I still cannot get the issue resolved.
Here is my case:
I developed an app using SQL Express as the local data source. I published it to my server using the Once Click install feature. When I look in my project viewer, under settings, My db connection strings are listed as follows: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|TAP_Master.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
From another computer, I navigate to the publish site, install and run the application with no problems. I have on another computer, the same app with an updated version number that I wish to publish, however the difference is is that this published version does not include the database as I do not want the end user to overwrite any existing data that they may have from the previous version.
I publish the updated version, install it but when the app runs, I receive the message, "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file".
I try to run a webform with gridview which is using the sqldatasource to get the customer table from local database, AdventureWorks_Data.mdf, it throws the following error: Error: An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorks_Data.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I try to display normal gridview in a webform but it throws this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataCommerce.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. Line 45: Dim myAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter(myCommand)Line 46: myAdapter.Fill(myDataSet)Line 47: Line 48: gv_CashStatementList.DataSource = myDataSet Web.Config <add name="CommerceConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataCommerce.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
The last time I saved my Visual C# project, everything was functionning perfectly. Now, when I open my project, I have this warning on every one of my inherited forms. When I run the project, everything works fine. I've looked around for similar problems, but never found the solution that truly fits for me. Any suggestions?

yes,I have an error, like 'The database file may be corrupted. Run the repair utility to check the database file. [ Database name = SDMMC Storage Cardwinpos_2005WINPOS2005.sdf ]' .I develope a program for Pocket Pcs and this program's database sometimes corrupt.what can i do?please help me
I had to to relocate the database log file and I issued an Alter database command but by mistake I put a space in the file name as below. The space is at the beginning file name. Now I am unable get the database loaded to SQL Server. The database has 2 replications configured, so deleting and re-attaching the database means the replication needs to be re-configured. Is there an alternative way to issue a command to update the database FILENAME ? Not sure if this can be edited in master database (sys files).
ALTER DATABASE [User_DB] MODIFY FILE (NAME = User_DB_log, FILENAME = 'I:SQLLogs User_DB_log.ldf') GO
If I detach a database on a server, then attach the database with asingle file only using the data file...will I lose any transactionsthat were in the original log file? There is a debate going on here atwork where some people think that during the detach, transactions inthe log file are saved to the data file. Thanks!
I have Sql Server in one pc and I want to attach one databse that is in another computer that doesnt have SQL Server. Sql Server doesnt permit UNC path when attaching database files. Is there anyway to workarounf this. Is Trace Flag 1807 of any use?
Dear All... I want my database file to be attached to remote server database when i published my site Notes : Remote Server Database:SqlServer2000 .net Version:1.1
Hey everyone I've got this question that has me stuck for the last few days but its an important part of my website.....What I am trying to do is basicly have a user be able to upload a file, have that uploaded file plus some other info automaticly display on other parts of my site, and have a different user eventually be able to download that file....I have thought about allowing the file upload as a BLOB but still cannot find a proper way to execute this using VB, plus I have heard that this way of doing it is not reccommeneded cause databases were not designed to store large files like this, lots of articles recommened having the file upload to a Folder on your server then get the binary data for the file that can be placed in a database to refrence that particular file.....Well this also proves to be a lot harder then said here is what I got so far (written in C#) protected void UploadBtn_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (FileUpLoad1.HasFile) {
FileUpLoad1.SaveAs(@"C:Documents and SettingsAdamMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsWebsiteFiles" + FileUpLoad1.FileName); Label1.Text = "File Uploaded: " + FileUpLoad1.FileName; } else { Label1.Text = "No File Uploaded."; } } and here is the asp part of the code that goes with it<asp:FileUpLoad id="FileUpLoad1" runat="server" />
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text=""></asp:Label> Now from what I know is I need to get the binary of the file which I have read you can do with the Page.Request.Files statement but again not sure how I would impliment this. Does anyone have any suggestions on which way I should take when dealing with this should I try and just use the BLOB method or use the binary refrence method? and if so how would I impliment this, heck even some good tutorials on the subject would be great... Thanks.....Adam

I am developing a C# mobile 5.0SDK app that utilizes SQL2005 Compact Edition device files on Vista using as far as I know the latest SPs and versions.
Last night, I could open tables from the Server Explorer .sdf file, see the contents, edit the schema, etc. Now today, I assume all of a sudden,I am able to open schema but cannot open the table to see the contents. I get:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition captioned error dialog box that says "Access to the database file is not allowed. [ File name = ],[,,]
Using Sql Server 2005 Management Studio Express, I can open the table, do queries etc. I have tried rebooting, deleting, opening old projects, deleting dataset, disconnecting mobile device, but I still get the same error. I have tried stopping the SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS) service on the server but get:
Cannot open MSSLQ$SQLEXPRESS service on computer 'p5w64'. Access is denied.
I have no idea what to do next to start moving forward again, other than try the XP environment which I will do next.

Here what I've come up with thus far and I but it doesn't work. Can someone please help? Let me know if there is a better wway to do this... Idealy I'd like to write straight to the sql database and skip the datset all together...
I want to load data that i receive everydays from my customers in .xls file format (excel) or cvs file format, to the database that i have created on this purpose. but when trying to do that whith SSIS; i got an error message .... that i can't import redudant data in my database column.
I've just applied CU7 to a set of SQL2005 SP2 servers with no problems, except on one server. I've now fixed the problem, but couldn't find description of it elsewhere so post it here in case it helps anyone else with the same problem.
Here's the problem I had. The server is Windows 2003 with two instances of SQL 2005 SP2 (9.00.3186) 1) Ran the patch (SQLServer2005-KB949095-x86-ENU.exe) 2) C: drive ran out of space whilst patch was running against instance A 3) Cleared down space on C: drive 4) Patch had hung, after 45 minutes of no activity I killed it 5) Re-ran patch, it reported instance A as upgraded already and just upgraded instance B 6) After reboot instance A failed to start. Instance B started with no problem.
The service was failing to start with the following recorded in the log: Server Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3239.00 (Intel X86) [€¦] spid5s The resource database build version is 9.00.3186. This is an informational message only. No user action is required. spid5s Error: 5173, Severity: 16, State: 1. spid5s One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. spid5s Error: 5173, Severity: 16, State: 1. spid5s One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. spid5s Log file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATAmssqlsystemresource.ldf' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database or the log may have been rebuilt previously. spid5s The log cannot be rebuilt when the primary file is read-only. spid5s Error: 945, Severity: 14, State: 2. spid5s Database 'mssqlsystemresource' cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server errorlog for details.
I think that the patch must have got part-way through instance A, enough to mark it as being patched, but not far enough to patch the mssqlsystemresource system database (note the version numbers in the log above - 9.00.3239 vs 9.00.3186). The hotfix log records an error opening the registry, but the detailed log was overwritten by the subsequent (successful) run of the hotfix so there€™s no more detail available.
To fix this I copied in the mssqlsystemresource mdf and ldf files from instance B (which wasn€™t patched the first time round, and was subsequently patched successfully). From what I understand mssqlsystemresource is read-only and holds copies of system sprocs etc, so a copy will suffice. Plus I am assuming the SQL Server is clever enough to complain if it€™s not happy with the instance of the file.
Note that the problem recorded elsewhere for this error, where mssqlsystemresource or other system DBs have been moved from their original installation folders, was not the cause here. Not sure if this is the 'correct' fix, but it got Instance A up and running. Obviously YMMV
