Attempt To Return Record Set In INSERT...EXEC Statement From ODBC Source(non MSSQL)

Jan 17, 2007

Greeting.

I use OdbcConnection inside clr procedure, for getting data. If I use simple EXEC dbo.clr_proc - all is OK. If I use INSERT...EXEC I recive error message: Distributed transaction enlistment failed.

I set MSDTC security options for No Authentification and Allow inbound and Allow outbound, but it's no use.

Have this problem solution? May be, I must use another method to get my data?

P.S. Linked Servers and OPENQUERY is not applicable. Sybase not describe columns in stored proc result set and one stored proc may return different result set by params.

P.S.S. Sorry for bad english.

Transact SQL :: INSERT Array Of Integer Into Table - Wrong Return Value Of Statement In ODBC

Sep 30, 2015

I would like to INSERT an array of integer into a table in MSSQL Server, then count the number of rows in the table with c++ using ODBC. Here you find my code to do this task:

#include <windows.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include<tchar.h>
#include <sql.h>
#include <sqlext.h>
#include<sqltypes.h>

[Code] ....

In my code, I would like to Insert the array and then count the number of rows:

SQLTCHAR Statement[] = _T("INSERT INTO information1(Wert1,Wert2) VALUES(?,?) select count(*) as a from information1 ") ;

Problem : My expectation is, that first 9 rows are inserted into table then comes 9 as result to user (if the table is empty) but this code returns me 1 if first the table is empty. If the table is not empty, it returns 1+number of existing rows in the table. If I take a look inside the table, the 9 rows are successfully inserted in it. Only the number of rows in the table is wrong.

Hint : If I monitor the database using SQL Profiler. It looks like this:

Why this statement doesn't work correctly?

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec ('string Command') Statement.

Sep 19, 2000

How do I use a @variable to hold on value return from an exec ('string command') statement.

Example for:

declare @OldID int
declare @cmd varchar(255)
declare @db varchar(25)
declare @OldOwner varchar(25)

set @db = 'DBNAME'
set @OldOwner = 'USERNAME'

select @cmd = 'select uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

Thanks.

Return Records Through A Linked Server That Uses ODBC Data Source

Hi,I used sp_addlinkedserver to link to a remote server through ODBC.When I execute select count(*) from LinkSrv.SI.DBO.SIHeader in SQL QueryAnalyzer. It returns 13705 records. If I specify somecolumns, select ODCOMP, ODPONO, ODVDCD from LinkSrv.SI.DBO.SIHeader.It returns more records, 1213 records.I guess there is something limit the return storage, but I can notfind it.Any suggestion will be appreciated. How To Return Null Values For Non-exist Record On A Left Join Statement

Oct 16, 2004

I have table Products and Orders that has the following columns:

table Products: ProductID, ProductName
table Orders: OrderID, ProductID, OrderDate, Quantity, Price

The Orders table contains orders placed on all the dates. I want to obtain a list of orders for a particular date, if there is no order for a product on the requested date, I want to return null values for the Quantity and Price fields.

I tried the following select statement:

select Products.ProductName, Orders.Quantity, Orders.Price from Products left join Orders on Products.ProductID = Orders.ProductID where Orders.OrderDate = '10/16/2004'

Where, there are a total of three products (A,B,C) in table Products. Product-C has no order on 10/16/2004, but I want it to return :

ProductName / Quantity / Price
Product-A 5 1.89
Product-B 6 2.43
Product-C null null

Obviously, my sql statement won't work becaue the where clause will filter out Product-C.

Could anyone help me figure out how to modify my sql code to get the resultset I want?

Thanks in advance.

RETURN Of IF NOT EXISTS INSERT Statement

I'm using MSSQL and PHP.
I've got the following sql statement:

$msquery = IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT SerienNr FROM tbl_Auftrag a WHERE a.SerienNr='PC8') INSERT INTO tbl_Auftrag (BMS_AuftragsNr, SerienNr, AuftraggNr, Zieltermin, Kd_Name) VALUES ('455476567','PC8','1','2006-3-2','Fritz')

The Statement itself works fine, but i've got a problem getting a return value whether the insert has succeed, or not. :confused:
mssql_query() always returns true if there occured no error in the statement. But i need to know if the insert procedded or not.
I tried:

$result = mssql_query($msquery);
$succeed = mssql_rows_affected ($result);

And:

$result = mssql_query($msquery);
$succeed = mssql_num_rows($result);

to get the rows, affected by the statement, but both return:

supplied argument is not a valid MS SQL-Link resource

Anyone an idea?

Insert Statement Which Uses A Return Value From An SP As An Insert Value

Jul 20, 2005

I'm quite stuck with this:I have an import table called ReferenceMatchingImport which containsdata that has been sucked from a data submission. The contents ofthis table have to be imported into another table ExternalReferencewhich has various foreign keys.This is simple but one of these keys says that the value inExternalReference.CompanyRef must be in the CompanyReference table.Of course if this is an initial import then it will not be so as partof my script I must insert a new row into CompanyReference andpopulate ExternalReference.CompanyRef with the identity column of thistable.I thought a good idea would be to use an SP which inserts a new rowand returns @@Identity as the value to insert. However this doesn'twork as far as I can tell. Is there a approved way to perform thissort of opperation? My code is below.Thanks.ALTER PROCEDURE SP00ReferenceMatchingImportAS/*Just some integrity checking going on here*/INSERT ExternalReference(ExternalSourceRef,AssetGroupRef,CompanyUnitRef,EntityTypeCode,CompanyRef, --this is the unknown ref which is returned by the spExternalReferenceTypeCode,ExternalReferenceCompanyReferenceMapTypeCode,StartDate,EndDate,LastUpdateBy,LastUpdateDate)SELECT rmi.ExternalDataSourcePropertyRef,rmi.AssetGroup,rmi.CompanyUnit,rmi.EntityType,SP01InsertIPDReference rmi.EntityType, --here I'm trying to run thesp so that I can use the return value as the insert value1,1,GETDATE(),GETDATE(),'RefMatch',GETDATE()FROM ReferenceMatchingImport rmiWHERE rmi.ExternalDataSourcePropertyRef NOT IN (SELECT ExternalSourceRefFROM ExternalReference)

MS OLE DB For ODBC With Oracle ODBC Source Headaches

Dec 25, 2005

Hi all,I am having trouble getting linked Oracle 9 server in MS SQL Server2005 Express to work properly. My machine is running Windows XP.The Microsoft and Oracle OLE DB Providers have problems dealing withOracle's Numeric Data Type, so I decided to use Microsoft's OLE DB forODBC Provider and an Oracle ODBC source. When using the Microsoft ODBCfor Oracle Driver in my ODBC source I have inconsistent behavior.Sometimes my queries are processed properly, then other times I get thefollowing errorOLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL"for linked server "ODBCBEAST".I have no idea why sometimes I can connect to the linked server with noproblems andwhy other times it performs like this. I'm not changing anything aboutthe system I can think of. When I use an Oracle client (PL/SQL) I haveabsolutely no problems connecting. TNSPING returns that the connectionis good.This is unacceptable so I decided to try my luck with the Oracle 10gODBC driver. However when I use this and perform an openquery selectagainst the linked server I get back only 11 rows, when I know that thedatabase has over 100 rows (in fact when using the Microsoft ODBCdriver and it works that's what I get). I figured maybe the buffersetting needed to be raised in the ODBC configuration so I took it from64000 to 600000 (a magnitude of 10) but I still get back only 11 rows.I'm at my wit's end.Any suggestions on resolving one or the other problem would be muchappreciated.Thanks much

Return A Value Using EXEC

Jan 12, 2004

OK, I'm fairly new to SQL Server, but I know SQL and databases pretty well. I'm just starting to use the dynamic SQL feature of SQL Server (with EXEC), and am wondering how to return a scalar value from a dynamic SQL expression. I realize I can't use EXEC in a user-defined function, but I want to create a stored procedure with one OUTPUT variable so I can simulate a function. The following code does not work, because EXEC does not return a value:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.ExecFunction ( @ScalarSELECTString varchar(250), @@ReturnVal sql_variant )

set @@ReturnVal = ( exec @ScalarSELECTString )

go

So, I was wondering if someone might be able to suggest a way to re-write the above code to achieve the same effect. Thanks in advance.

SQL 2000 Bulk Insert Attempt On FTP In Progress

Dec 7, 2006

Hi All,I think this is a thorny problem, and I'm hoping you can help. I've notfound this exact issue described anywhere yet.I have a stored procedure that calls BULK INSERT on a set of text files.These files are FTP'd from a legacy system (a mainframe running MVS).Sometimes, the process steps on iteslf, whereby the bulk insert is attemptedon a file whose FTP is still in progress; it's not fully written to disk onthe SQL box (it's a 100MB file that takes a long time to cross the networkto the share on the Windows box), and so the insert generates a fatal errorand the procedure stops.I wrote a proc that calls the sp_OA* procs to use theScripting.FileSystemObject to test for the file's readiness. It returns anerror for me if the file does not exist. It also returns an error if I tryto run the BULK INSERT against a file which is being copied via Windows tothe SQL box. This is working just fine under those conditions; thesp_OAMethod to call OpenTextFile bombs appropriately if the file write isstill in progress.That's great, but it doesn't do the same thing during an FTP in progress.It doesn't generate the same error (that is OpenTextFile has no problemopening a partially written FTP'd file). I can also open the file inNotepad, even though it's not fully written to disk ... something I did notexpect, but there we are. What is it about FTP that's different from aWindows file system copy operation that makes the file look available forreading?If BULK INSERT is capable of detecting that it cannot do its thing on a filewhose FTP is in progress, then what can I write or call to emulate thatdetection? I tried writing a COM object in VB.NET and calling that from mySQL stored proc instead of the Scripting Engine's FSO methods. My codesimlpy tries to run a FileOpen using an Exclusive read lock; however, thisdoesn't seem to work, and I'm shooting in the dark now.Can anyone tell me what kind of file i/o request BULK INSERT makes, suchthat it is capable of abending during a run against an incompletely writtenfile using FTP?Thanks!Tim

How To Return The Result Of An EXEC From A Function

Sep 21, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to find a way to return the result of an EXEC(*sqlstring*) from a function. I can return the tsql but not the result of an execute.

This is my function:

RETURNS varchar(max)
AS

-- Declare the return variable here

BEGIN
SET @RTN = 'SELECT PickItem I +
CASE D.IsStartDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(StartDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsStartDateEstimated, 0) as varchar)
END +
CASE D.IsEndDateEstimated
WHEN 0 THEN CAST(EndDate as varchar)
ELSE CAST(dbo.ReturnEstimatedDate(D.IsEndDateEstimated, 1) as varchar)
END

FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_PICK P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
LEFT JOIN TBL_PickDates D ON D.PickID = P.PickID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND P.CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @RTN=
'SELECT I.PickItem
FROM TBL_LU_PICK L
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick_Items I ON I.PickTypeID = L.PickTypeID
INNER JOIN TBL_Pick P ON P.PickItemID = I.PickItemID
WHERE L.PickTypeID = ' + CAST(@TypeID as varchar) + '
AND CaseID = ' + CAST(@CaseID as varchar)
END

RETURN @RTN

END

Each time I try " RETURN EXEC(@RTN) " or something similar I get an error.

I have tried executing the tsql and assigning the result to a varchar and returning that varchar but i get an error.

Anyone with any ideas?
