Can't Connect To Database When Specifying A Windows Account
Jul 15, 2015
We have a SQL database on a non standard instance. If I open SQL server manager and connect to that database using integrated Windows Authentication I can basically do whatever I want with that database. However, if I try to connect to that database remotely (or even from the sql server) using a test connection UDL it only works if I use Windows integrated security. If I specify my account details specifically (or any other account which has access) it doesn't want to connect.
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.
This is my installation Information

I have SQLExpress and SQL2005 both installed on my W2K3 server. I can access my databases with SQL2005 without problems.
As far as my memory serves me, I have not made any manual changes to the SQLExpress setup - nor will I as my users will have no knowledge as to how to - it must be an out-of-the-box solution.
I am using VS2005 to create a Windows Form project. I used VS2005 IDE to create a database as MyBookings.mdf . I have, in the IDE successfully created a table. This is all using SQLExpress.
I now wish to access the database and have the following as my connection string:
The following error message is generated when I try to access the db from within my program:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
The SQL log enties for my past several tries are:
007-03-20 09:57:50.92 Logon Cannot attach the file 'MyBookings.mdf' as database 'MyBookings'. [CLIENT: <local machine>] 2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 spid51 Error: 5105, Severity: 16, State: 2. 2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 spid51 A file activation error occurred. The physical file name '.MyBookings.mdf' may be incorrect. Diagnose and correct additional errors, and retry the operation. 2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 Logon Error: 1832, Severity: 20, State: 1. 2007-03-20 09:58:13.92 Logon Cannot attach the file '.MyBookings.mdf' as database 'MyBookings'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]
I have spent 2 days researching this and have come up with no solution.
i am currently trying to connect to sql server with one of the windows user accounts. I am trying to connect to it via a browser using a dns-less connection. I have put in all the correct user name and password details and it comes back with Login failed for user xxxxxxx.
If i create a user in sql server and put those login details in, it works fine.
Can i use windows users with a dns-less connection???
I have a scheduled job to perform exports of SQL databases to a file share. The file share is setup so everyone can write to it but only the AD account 'SQL.Bkup' can delete. I have setup SQL Server Agent to use this ID when performing backups but the backups fail each time when trying to delete old backup versions.
I have logged into this id (SQL.Bkup) and can delete files on that share without a problem.
Is there some thing I need to setup differently to get the backup process tol run with the correct authority?
I am no DBA, but this is my task.I have an SQL Server 2000 Database that has an "SQL Account" that hasexecute permission on all Stored procedures. it is what was used bythe company. This one account is used by "all workstations".I want to fix this and use Windows Accounts, and get rid of that SQLAccount. How do I go about adding that Windows Account permission toall the Stored Procedures? What I want to do is to just add several windows account then go aboutremoving the permission where necessary on an account by accountbasis.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have got a strange problem on runing SSIS package, please help me.
The package contains a Script Task which function is downloading files from a SFTP server with using psftp command line application. It will run successfully with using dtutil.exe and as a job with using a ssis execute proxy(domian account as credential), but fail runing the package as a job with using a ssis execute proxy(local windows account as credential, although has Administrator permission).
It seems a permission problem, but I try a lot and can't solve it.
I have some script which creates/grant priveleges to windows/nt users to DB but i frequently get the message below:
Windows NT user or group '<user or group>' not found. Check the name again.
I understand that this is because the said user/group is indeed not present in the environment I'm running the script (ie. testing and production environment).
But is it possible to have some sort of checking whether the user/group exists in the environment so that I could determine whether or not to call some lines of code?
Not sure if this is possible so i had to ask. c",)
Doing webforms in ASP.NET and i have a connection string in the webconfig that connects to a locally created SQL Server user account.
This is fine however when i try to connect to a domain account created by the IT administrator for me, it wont work.
The User name and password he supplied are correct as i logged into my PC (Win 2000) using it to test it. However when i try to connect to this remote network domain account by changing my connection string it fails... anyone any ideas, or am i missing a subtlety of ASP.NET and SQL connectionstrings?
Heres the connection string that works... ConnectionString = value="Server=MY-SERVER;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=MYDATABASE2;User ID=MrLocalUser;Password=password;"
Heres the connection string that fails... ConnectionString = value="Server=MY-SERVER;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=MYDATABASE2;User ID=DOMAINMrDomainUser;Password=password;"
When I try to access my PasswordRecovery.aspx page I get an error. I've also added the Event Warning and the Failure Audit. I've tried deleting the ASPNET user account and recreating it using aspnet_regiis.exe. I still get the same error message. Should I add the ASPNET account to the Administrators group? Currently it is with the Users group. Login failed for user 'PC325862970629ASPNET'.

I would like to know is it possible to installing sql 2005 express edition on windows xp with limited account. I tried to install it. After installing, the service can not start. Is there any thing that I misconfigured?
I noticed when I restore a master database to a server other then the one which created the backup of master, SQL Server contains the following three local security groups that were defined on the source server. The problem is these groups are "local" and do not apply to the server where master was restored.
If you then backup the master database on an instance named MARKETING_PROD and restore it to MARKETING_TEST, the security folder on MARKETING _TEST will now contain the following three entries.
These entries would be invalid because no such server exists and therefor no such local groups exists. There appears to be no Microsoft documentation explaining how to handle these groups when restoring master from one server to another. My assumption is that whenever restoring master to another server you must drop these three groups and add the correct corresponding groups along with the appropriate permissions. I don't understand why SQL Server would not rebuild this information for you during a restore.
We may need to change the account presently used to run the Windows Service "SQL Server Integration Services".What are the implications of making such a change?
I`m trying to connect to the Analysis Services (AS 2000 Enterprise Edition SP4 on Windows Server 2003 EE, respository is in Access DB) throught Analysis Manager over HTTPS(HTTP) connection. I dont want to use domain account.
I need to specify USER_ID and PASSWORD to the Analysis Manager, but in registration of new server is only IP address or HTTP adress (for http://server) - but it doesn´t work - it says Unauthorized. But I`ve tried to use Anonymous account and it doesn`t work (client wan`t able to make connection)... I would like to use Basic Authentification.... Thise account is member of OLAP_Administrators... but the problem is where should I put USER_ID and PASSWORD???
It works perfect in Excel 2003.... MSOLAP.asp work fine in IE...
During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.
Hi, I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error. Here is the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Here is the Environment: App Server: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Inside Company's Firewall/ Network Database Server: Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition SQL Server 2000 SP4 Remote Connections to the Server is checked Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433) The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address. I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server). I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP? What do I tell the network admin to change? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Oran
every 1 hour my server's computer is restarting ! when the windows finish restarting i open the Event viewer and see that what coused it is the error :
"Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database." Event 107 source : "Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER)"
When attempting SQL Replication I am getting an error that the user I setup for connecting to the Distribution database was unable to connect. I have setup a domain administrator user on our Domain (Active Directory) with the name of SDP. In order to test the SDP login I attempted to connect as DOMAINSDP, and it failed. If I login to Windows (2000) as SDP I can connect to the Server using Windows Authentication without any problem.
Why can I not connect using SQL Server Authentication as DOMAINSDP when I am logged into Windows as kblum? Is there some sort of setting that I need to establish to allow this?
I've scoured Google searching for an answer that seems like it should beeasy but apparently isn't...when I open SSMS to connect to a SQL 2005database and choose Windows authentication, it greys out the User Namebox...problem is, the server I need to connect to is in another domain...howon earth are you supposed to specify a different Windows user name toconnect with other than the one currently logged into the machine?-Ben--Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com
If we have a "pool" SQL login, a one that uses SQL Server authentication, and this login is used by different domain account to access SQL Server, is there a way to audit which domain account used that "pool" login to do something on a object in SQL Server? I have to keep this way of accessing SQL Server, so how to create a login for every domain account accesses SQL Server
Just spoke w/ our network admin and he mentioned that we use SPI, so being brand new to ASP, i did some googling and found this string:
the username and password is the account i have for the database, which is windows authentication, so i made sure the domain was in there. i am unsure of what i am doing wrong.
WE have an appl testing the SQL security feature, at some point in time they drop the BUILTINAdministrators group from the login, changed the security mode to "Windows NT only", but no users have system admin server role, after the SQL server was restarted, no one can connect to the server. No one has authority to change the security mode back to "mixed" (all standard logons will not work) Any comment ?
The way I can think of to fix the problem: detach all user databases run rebuildm.exe reattach all user databases recreate the required logins
I'm trying to connect to a database using my virtual machine, where I´m logged in as another user than the one that's granted acccess to the database. Can I enter the windows username and password used to connect to my SQL 2005 database, in Windows Authentication Mode?
I have to search the keyword from windows application using dtSearch. when user enter the list of keywords in UI, i have to connect to dtSearch tool and based on the output return, the matched keyword should be added to database table.
Now, i have problem in connecting this tool from my application.
Currently I cannot connect to a database, I got the system.exception €śPlatformNotSupportedExcoption€?. This database is Polish (COLLATE Polish_CI_AS), when I collate this database to latin general it works fine. I connect by using the system.data.sqlclient.sqlconnection, as far as I can see I cannot set the locale identifier here€¦ What can I do??? Thanks for your help! regards, Jan
I am not able to connect to SQL Database server using windows authentication when I am connected through VPN connection. However I am able to connect to same server using SQL server authentication and also able to do RDP to DB server machine.
I found a resolution in one of the forum suggesting to change UserRasCredentials to 0 value in *.pdk file.Since VPN connection which I am using generates instant proxy this resolution doesn't work.
Also application which I am using does windows authentication connection it is required for me to impersonate windows authetication when connected using VPN.
I'm working on a project where I have to create a password protected form for teachers to submit reports about students. Originally I was going to use asp.net to create the form, but unfortunately the server I'm working with will not be granted asp functionality in the allotted timeframe.
To solve this issue I have another idea. So I will ask a few questions to help with research before I begin coding.
Is it possible to create a windows application that can connect to an access database hosted online? The windows app will need to be be able to update, insert, and select information from the database.
There is only going to be about 30-40 people using this windows application once or twice a week.
Thus I envision taking a password protected access database and dropping it onto a server. The windows application will have the online location of the database embeded into the code. (connection string) From there on out coding for the windows application should be the exact same as if the database was hosted locally on the computer, correct?
Also, 1. What is a good way to check and make sure the computer is connected to the internet before my application tries to access the database?
2. Are there any drastic security issues with this process that I should think about. The database will only be password proected, and the windows application will take a username/password from the user and check it against a table before they are able to submit info to the database.
I just need to be pointed in the right direction for this project. Thanks.
Can someone point me at an article that tells how to allow the ASP.net worker process to connect, via windows authentication, to a remote sql server instance ?
