Copy Permissions Of A Database Role

Jul 23, 2005

Brief description of the problem:
My production server has about 50 databases and various permissions are
granted to public role on all these databases. Because of this any new
user added to any database gets unnecessary access to objects by virtue
of being a member of public by default. I would like to fix this flaw
in the way the server is setup as below:
1. Setup a new database role called NewRole on all 50 databases and
copy permissions to NewRole from public.
2. Add all existing users to the new Role.
3. Remove all permissions from public.

Any suggestions on scripting this task are welcome.

Database Role Permissions

Oct 12, 2007

Hello.

I've moved a database from 2000 to 2005 and in 2005 I cannot see the permissions for this Database Role that I created. In 2000 you just right-clicked, selected properies and clicked on permissions. Am I going mad here or is this not an option in 2005. If not, how do I see the permissions that have been given to the role?

The 2005 database I refer to is on standard edition SP2

Thank You

Duplicating Permissions Of A Database Role

Jan 20, 2004

thanks for reading.

i would like to create a new database role that has exactly the same permissions as an existing database role. the combinations of permissions are complicated enough to make this a time consuming task worthy of a script of some sort. any suggestions?

i'm running SQL Server 2000 and can't find anything about copying roles unless it's through DTS from one DB to another. not sure if this is applicable to basically duplicating and renaming a role in one database.

in case you're wondering why anyone would want to do this you may not be surprised to know that it's a government thing. some policy about differentiating between 2 roles -- even though they currently have exactly the same permissions, the similarities might change in the future.

thanks in advance for your input.

Copy Database Wizard Permissions

Feb 14, 2008

I have two servers (server 2003) both running SQL Server Enterprise Edition Version 8. One SQL server is Primary, the other is Secondary. The system was doing a daily export from primary and import to secondary, but that quit working a while back. I'm trying to copy the databases from the Primary to the Secondary and than set up replication. I'm already stuck at copying the databases over using the copy database wizard. The servers are not on a domain, and the SQL server service is running as user ./sql. When using the copy database wizard i must use windows authication for it to select the Primary as the sourse, as inputing the SQL Server authication user (sql) and password says it cannot connect. When i select one of the databases to copy and run the wizard it gives me an error code -2147467259, in which google did not help me. It runs through the process of creating a temporary share, puts it in single user mode, detaches the DB, but fails to copy the file. I believe it is some sort of permissions issue on the drive, and gave user sql full access, and after that didnt work i gave "everyone" full access temporary to see if that worked but didnt. Do these servers need to be on a domain for this to work? I also read MSoft knowledgebase http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274463 Id rather not have set these up for a domain. Thanks!

Can't Make Database Role A Member Of Another Database Role In 2005.

Jan 9, 2006

In sql server 2000, I created some custom database roles called ProjectLeader and Developer.  I would make these roles a member in the fixed database roles so that I would only have to add the user to the ProjectLeader or Developer role once and they would presto-magico have the security I wanted them to have with no unecessary mouse clicking.  I'm not sure how to repeat this process in 2005?  Management Studio doesn't seem to allow you to add a role as a member in another role.  Is there a work around or solution for this?

Exporting User/Role Permissions

Jan 26, 2007

I am not a DBA so please be gentle...

I am trying to export all of the user and role permissions out of several databases for auditing purposes. I see the Users and Roles listed under the Security tree view when I log into the database, but I do not see an option to export or query the permissions. In addition, we do not have any tables that reference user permissions in our databases. So, how would one go about exporting or querying this information?

I've seen similar topics where they recommend querying sys tables to gather the info, but I don't see those tables either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All my thanks!

 - Isaac

Edit: I should add in that I am connecting to 7 and 2k DBs using 2k5 SMS. Not sure if that makes a difference...

Reseting Select Permissions For Public Role

Sep 13, 2004

Every night, there are some stored procedures that run to recreate tables so that the information in the table is updated. After the tables are droped and recreated I have to go in and check the select box under the permissions for the public role. If i don't do this users will not be able to select from theres tables.

What can I do so that users are able to select from these tables after they are created?

Would you be able to specify the select permissions for the public role in the script that creates the table or run a script that gives all those tables select permissions for the public role?

All help is appreciated.

Apply Permissions To User, Role Or Group?

Jul 11, 2006

Hi guys,

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Not done too much DB admin. Usually I do development work and the admins to the admin.

The database is behind an API of stored procedures to manipulate the data, and views to select the data.

The database needs to be accessed remotely by multiple clients.

How best to keep the database secure?

Create a new user and login on the database which is made known to all client applications. Then grant execute permission on the stored procs and grant select on the views?

There is probably a better way than one login for all? Should I be looking at roles and groups etc? If so, how best to set that up?

A few pointers would be gratefully received!

DTS Designer Task: Copy Server Objects. What User Permissions Required?

Nov 6, 2006

I'm making a copy of some tanles between 2 servers.

Server 1 requires a sql login

Server 2 is using Windows Auth.

I have a user on server 1 named "odbc" able to log in.

however my copy task fails, when I drill the error, it's lists the first user in server 1 alphabetically as the failed login???? but in my dts I am specifying the "odbc" user and password.

I think I have a permissions problem on server 1. So my Question, what minimum permissions does user "odbc" need to copy a table?

On server 1 I can copy from northwind to server 2 just fine..but any other db on server 1 causes the weird failure with the wrong username.

Any Ideas? I am not a DBA obviously :)

Thanks,

Carl

The Remote Copy Of Database X Has Not Been Rolled Forward To A Point In Time That Is Encompassed In The Local Copy

May 11, 2006

Hi,

I set up DB mirror between a primary (SQL1) and a mirror (SQL2); no witness. I have a problem when I issue command:

alter database DBmirrorTest
Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL2.mycom.com:5022';
go

The error message is:

The remote copy of database "DBmirrorTest" has not been rolled forward to a point in time that is encompassed in the local copy of the database log.

I have the steps below prior to the command. (Note that both servers' service accounts use the same domain account. The domain account I login to do db mirror setup is a member of the local admin group.)

1. backup database DBmirrorTest on SQL1

2. backup database log

3. copy db and log backup files to SQL2

4. restore db with norecovery

5. restore log with norecovery

6. create endpoints on both SQL1 and SQL2

CREATE ENDPOINT [Mirroring]

STATE=STARTED

AS TCP (LISTENER_PORT = 5022, LISTENER_IP = ALL)

FOR DATA_MIRRORING (ROLE = PARTNER)

7. enable mirror on mirror server SQL2

:connect SQL2

alter database DBmirrorTest

Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL1.mycom.com:5022';

go

8. Enable mirror on primary server SQL1

:connect SQL1

alter database DBmirrorTest

Set Partner = N'TCP://SQL2.mycom.com:5022';

go

This is where I got the error.

The remote copy of database "DBmirrorTest" has not been rolled forward to a point in time that is encompassed in the local copy

Thanks for any help,

KT

SQL Server 2008 :: SSIS Copy File From SharePoint Library Using File System Task Permissions?

Jun 19, 2015

Historically I've always written a VB script to copy a file from a sharepoint library. I don't like this method because I have to input a username & password in the script and maintain a config file.

Yesterday I was playing around with using a file system task. The sharepoint file has a UNC path so why not? I created a simple test package with a single file system task that copies the sharepoint file (addressed via UNC) to another network location. Package runs fine locally.

I try running on our utility server but am getting a "The file name [SHAREPOINT UNC PATH] specified in the connection was not valid" error. Package is running with a proxy on the server and the proxy account has the same permissions to the sharepoint site (so far as I can tell) as me.
