DB Design :: How To Format Bit Data Type For Gender Field
Jun 23, 2013
I'm designing a database that stores personal details of students and teachers for a school. I, wish to know if a there is away of formatting the bit data type to male/female. Cause i am only able to achieve 0 and 1 in this data type. So is there any way to change it, or is there any other data type suitable to provide only two options Also the database should be protected in a way that students may not be able to view or change. Only teachers/admin have the right to access/modify the data.
Hello guys, I am a hobbyist programmer and now that I have started asp.net, I was wondering about the correct way to enter data into a table. For example, i have a table called players with a field called status. What should I code the status as? "Active" or "Retired" or 1 and 0? I thought using 1 and 0 would be better as far as database size, but it is pretty difficult to understand how to modify the gridview. I come from PHP and everything is a lot more accesible there as far as modification of output. Thanks in advance!
Ilve install sql server 2012 in my pc and i want to change datetime default format. How can i do this and please i dont want to take the result from select convert() or select cast or something like this. I ve want to take the format i want writing query select datecolumn from table.
Now the format i have is: 2015-11-16 09:04:00.000
And i want this format: 16.11.2015 09:04:00
Is any way to convert automaticaly by select only column? or can i change at all once? or must write function to when i select the column can change automatic ? or another thing, i ve see in column properties something like formula. In computed column specification in formula i wrote this:
And I take the format i want automaticaly but i get the current date for all rows and i cant edit or insert that column anymore. So, how to change the format of date time but no from select query.
Why does SQL add 4 zeros at the end of a money data type? I have to format my strings once they are retrieved because of this. I am not sure if I did something wrong, but shouldn't it only have 2 trailing zero's?
hi all , does SQL server able to input the date that is originally from 2/6/2004 11:07:46 AM to DD-MM-YY 06-02-04 and store in the DB. For example , this is the SQL insert query
INSERT INTO ADMIN ( ID , NAME , DATE ) VALUES ( 'A001' , 'karen' ,'2/6/2004 11:07:46 AM')
the date will automatically converted to 06-02-04 and store in DB .
Does it need to use SQL Rule or user-defined data type.
Hi,This is driving me nuts, I have a table that stores notes regarding anoperation in an IMAGE data type field in MS SQL Server 2000.I can read and write no problem using Access using the StrConv function andI can Update the field correctly in T-SQL using:DECLARE @ptrval varbinary(16)SELECT @ptrval = TEXTPTR(BITS_data)FROM mytable_BINARY WHERE ID = 'RB215'WRITETEXT OPERATION_BINARY.BITS @ptrval 'My notes for this operation'However, I just can not seem to be able to convert back to text theinformation once it is stored using T-SQL.My selects keep returning bin data. How to do this! Thanks for your help.SD
I have to display the data in the below said formats..Current sample Data in the table and the data type is numeric(23,10)
50.00 0.50 0.00 0.00
To be displayed in the below format
1.25 0.75 0 0 1
I have to map this column in teh report and should dipslay like above.I think if 0.00 is available then it should display as 0..If 1.0 is available then it should display 1.Any value that has postive number after the decimal should display all the values example : 2.25,3.75,5.06, So in general the solution to display values like 1.75,1,0 we should not dispaly 0 as 0.00 and 1 as 1.00 and 2 as 2.00 and so on...Any Solutions in terms of SQL query or SSRS expression.
Hi, I want to store a time duration such as 1:30 (mm:ss), 1:00, or 1:23 in a SQL 2005 database. What is the best data field type for this data? DateTime or TimeStamp? Thanks
I am using SQL Server 2005 Express. I am creating a table, which will have a comments field. Whats an appropriate data type that should be used for a "comments" field? So far, I have unlimited text and characters can be entered, but that a limitation can be placed.
I'm using XmlDataSource to build reports based on WebService output (as plain XML text). (SSRS2005)
I have several fields which contain Float/Decimal/Integer value, but RS reads them as text and I have to use CDbl() to convert text to numeric value. In MSDN I found some info about "Type" attribute(?) for XmlElement. My xml is: ...<Field1 Type="Float">34567.89</Field1>...
But RS still reads data from this field as text.
Is there any way to specify field's (xmlelement's) data type instead of using CDbl() function everywhere?
Hi I am currently working on an application that uses a stored procedure to retrieve data from a database and then display it in a web page. My problem is that some of the data in the database will be images, I am currently putting in test data to test my code/procedures my problem is how do I put in test data for images, when I am finished I am going to add an admin section that will allow me to add images that way but how do I go about adding them to the database until then? I have set the field to the image data type but have no idea how to relate this to an image on my server? Thanks, Adam
Hi there! I'm using a Switch statement in my SQL as follows:
Code:
SELECT symbol, Switch(timestamp Is Null,Null, timestamp <= 005959, 0, timestamp<=235959,23) AS period INTO averageprice FROM stocktrades;
Now here's my problem. The Data Type stored in the 'period' field of this new table I've created, dubbed averageprice, is a Text field and I want it to be a Number field. I've tried my best to figure this out and I'm still looking so any helpful hints or solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
In my database there is a text field type that is used to enter streetaddress. This address could be a few lines long, each line with acarriage return at the end.Is there a way to search for these carriage returns and break out whatis in each line seperately? Thanks.Mike
AnupG writes "hi, the most common feature that any RDBMS provides should be that if we want to store the data in the MSSQL tables then the data should be presented in masked/formatted like for eg.the password text in field should be like "*****". I am using SQL 2000 but i unofrtunately i couldn't find any such feature in defining the data type in SQL server 2000 ...?"
If I pull a value from a MSSQL field with is defined as money, how can I get it to display in a textbox with commas and NO decimals? 87000.0000 = 87,000 I can currently remove the decimals like below but is there a way to add the commas as well? decRevenue = drMyData("Revenue") txtRevenue.Text = decRevenue.ToString("f0") It current shows "87000".
I am new at ASP.net and I am having problems inserting data using C# in ASP.netI have created a table named "Profile" in the MS sql server database named "MyDataBase". There is a field named "ID" that has data type 'uniqueidentifier'.I am confused how to INSERT data into this data field. I have used MS Access and MYSQL in which there is an option of auto increment so we don't a unique identifier for each record. Please tell me what can I do to If I want to have a uniqueidentifier for each new record I INSERT in the "Profile" table of MS sql server database. While trying to insert, I get following errorsCannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID'and I don't know how I can insert something in this field that is of value type unique identifier. Please help me I will be very thankfull of you.
how can i insert a carriage return when i update the field?
say i want to put the following inside a field: firstline secondline
how can i update/insert a column to have a return carriage inside it? UPDATE table SET column = 'firstline secondline'
the reason i want this is because when using a program (Solomon, by microsoft, purchasing software) to grab a field out of the database and when it displays that field in the programs textbox, i want it to be displayed on two separate lines
i tried doing UPDATE table SET column = 'firstline' + char(13) 'secondline'
but when in the solomon program, it displays an ascii character between firstline and secondline like: firstline||secondline
I got this error for a calculated field that calls a public function of a custom assembly based on the report parameter values. The return type is an array of double.
Does SSRS 2005 supports the type double for a field? Can the data source of a field in a dataset be an array? Is there a way to pass the array to a field by reference and display the values at runtime?
I would appreciate any help since I could not find anything helpful on the internet and Microsoft document!
I am attempting to create a stored procedure that will launch at report runtime to summarize data in a table into a table that will reflect period data using an array type field. I know how to execute one line but I am not sure how to run the script so that it not only summarizes the data below but also creates and drops the table.
I am trying to setup an indicator value for an SSRS report to show green and red values on a report, based on the NRESULT value. The problem I am facing is that I have several different CASE statements that have the same logic, and they are processing just fine. NRESULT is a decimal field, so no conversion should be necessary. I do not know why I am getting the "Arithmetic overflow error converting varchar to data type numeric." error message.
Below is the CASE statement where the error is occurring. It is in the part of the ELSE CASE. The first CASE works just fine when the ELSE CASE is commented out. If I also change the ELSE CASE statement to say "else case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) = '-' then '0'", then it processes fine, too, so it has to be something I am missing something in the check on negative values. I do need the two checks, one for positive and one for negative values, to take place.
case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) <> '-' then --This portion, for checking positive values, of the CASE statement works fine. CASE WHEN LEFT(ROUND(NRESULT,2),4) between 0.00 and 0.49 THEN '2' --Green ELSE CASE WHEN LEFT(ROUND(NRESULT,2),4) > 0.49 THEN '0' --Red ELSE '3' --White END END else case when LEFT(NRESULT,1) = '-' then --This portion, for checking negative values, of the CASE statement is producing the conversion error message.
[code]....
I checked the NRESULT field, and there are not any NULL values in there, either.
I am trying to drag data from Informix to Sql Server. When I kick off the package using an OLE DB Source and a SQL Server Destination, I get DT_DBDATE to DT_DBTIMESTAMP errors on two fields from Informix which are date data ....no timestamp part
I tried a couple of things:
Created a view of the Informix table where I cast the date fields as datetime year to fraction(5), which failed.
Altered the view to convert the date fields to char(10) with the hopes that SQL Server would implicitly cast them as datetime but it failed.
Does anyone know of a way to identify the gender of a person's name in a table? I have found an application that does it but I have to export it and use another program to analyze the data and then importing it back into SQL. We have a table that has a list of customers names that we use to market and we need this tool to analzye the customers by gender.
Hi all,I have a table called PTRANS with few columns (see create script below).I have created a view on top that this table VwTransaction (See below)I can now run this query without a problem:select * from dbo.VwTransactionwhereAssetNumber = '101001' andTransactionDate <= '7/1/2003'But when I create an index on the PTRANS table using the command below:CREATE INDEX IDX_PTRANS_CHL# ON PTRANS(CHL#)The same query that ran fine before, fails with the error:Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted inan out-of-range datetime value.I can run the same query by commeting out the AssetNumber clause and itworks fine. I can also run the query commenting out the TransactionDatecolumn and it works fine. But when I have both the conditions in theWHERE clause, it gives me this error. Dropping the index solves theproblem. Can anyone tell me why an index would cause a query to fail? Thanks a lot in advance,AmirCREATE TABLE [PTRANS] ([CHL#] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[CHCENT] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHYYMM] [numeric](4, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHDAY] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHTC] [char] (2) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOCREATE VIEW dbo.vwTransactionsASSELECT CONVERT(datetime, dbo.udf_AddDashes(REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHCENT)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHCENT) + REPLICATE('0', 4 -LEN(CHYYMM))+ CONVERT(varchar, CHYYMM) + REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHDAY)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHDAY)), 20) AS TransactionDate,CHL# AS AssetNumber,CHTC AS TransactionCodeFROM dbo.PTRANSWHERE (CHCENT <> 0) AND (CHTC <> 'RA')*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!
I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:
