If I set the value of Hide Instance= Yes, does "Force Enctyption", need to be set YES as well?

Or Force Enctyption has to be enabled in order to hide instance?

What is the recommend settings?

SQL Server 2000 Enable Remote Connections

Oct 4, 2007

Hi guys
Apologies if this is the wrong place to be posting this but I have posted on a few forums and have not had any usable answers to this question, so I am hoping you guys will be able to help me.
I have 2 servers that are on the same domain. My ASP.NET application is running off the first which has .NET 2.0 installed, and I have an SQL Server 2000 db on the other. Whenever I try to connect I get the following error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
The connection works when I run the project in VS Development Server on my work computer, but as soon as I upload to the server I get this error.
I have scoured Google but all of the sites I come across are for SQL Server 2005 and are just not suitable for solving the issue on 2000.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot continue my current project until this issue is resolved.

How To Enable Clients To Access The Same DB Via SQL Express

Nov 12, 2006

Hi to all!

My problem comes from this situation: I have two PC connected via a network calble; on the first I have SQL Server 2005 Express, an MDF data file in a shared directory under the "Document and Settings" path, and my program written in VB .NET 2005. On the second PC I have only my program, and I would like to have it connect to and work on the MDF on the first PC.

The program on the first PC works well and uses a connection string like the following:

Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=<path><name>.mdf;;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
I am able to access to SQL Express from the second PC (I have enabled the Client to use the right TCP ports, told the firewall to let them work and enabled the Guest user on the first PC to use SQL Express), but from Visual Studio Server Explorer I cannot reach my data file: any attempt fails telling me that I cannot open it because is in a shared location... I can only open the DBs located in the "Data Directory" of SQL Express...

In other words, what should I do to have two or more clients work on the same DB under SQL Express? Is it mandatory that the DB .MDF file resides in the "C:ProgramsMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" directory so that it can be permanently attached to SQL Express?

Thanks for your help!!!

DB Engine :: Cannot Connect To Remote Named Instance Of Server

May 8, 2013

We have 3x instances of SQL Server 2012 installed on a single remote server - there's the default MSSQLSERVER instance, then INSTANCE01 and INSTANCE02. I can remotely connect to the default MSSQLSERVER instance through SSMS, but I cannot connect to either of the additional named instances (INSTANCE01 or INSTANCE02).

For example, if I try to connect to "sql.domain.com", I can successfully access the default instance on the remote server. If I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01", I get an error stating

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server".

However - if I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01, 49301" (where 49301 is the TCP Port for the TCP/IP Protocol for this SQL Server instance), I am able to successfully connect.

This leads me to think that there's a communication issue with the SQL Server Browser service running on the remote SQL Server and my workstation.

The following items have been verified:

SQL Server Browser is running on the remote SQL ServerWindows Firewall has been disabled on the SQL ServerTCP Ports 1433, 1434, 1954, and 49301 have been opened up on the remote destination's firewallUDP Port 1434 has been opened up on the remote destination's firewall.

Newbie Query - Replicate To Hot Standby And How To Enable The Hot Standby For Access

Nov 14, 2007

I've been reading a million and one posts on replication

My scenario is that i have a live SQL 2000 server. In a DR invokation, i'e i've lost my live sever, i want to be able to access the same data at the DR (SQL 2000) site and have it accessable to the users. DR server has a different name to the live box.

Replicate

Master
CRMDatabase

Data changes all the time but can have hourly replication of transaction logs for this example. I've currently researched a sp called update logons but this has to be fed each account name to enable them on the new server. There must be a way to activate all CRMDatabase logons with the new server?

Could someone be kind enough to lead me through a step by step guide on the best solution.

Thanks a lot

We are not managing internet connectivity in that place, so I don't know for sure, but can this error be caused by connection timeout that comes when script tries to write ?

Please Help With Remote SQL Access

Jul 22, 2005

Hi
I have a web application and SQL database on separate SQL 2000 server. I have no admin rights to these servers.The ISP gave me a VPN connection and password to manager my database.If i run the application from my home computer WITH the VPN connected the application works fine.However if i disconnect the VPN or try to run the application from the remote server i get this error:SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI have researched this problem extensively and CANNOT find a solution. The application and SQL 2000 database server are on different computers. The SQL user id and password are different from the VPN connection's.My web config looks like this:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
<appSettings>
<add key="mappedname" value="username"/>
<add key="mappedkey" value="password"/>
</appSettings>
<system.web>
<globalization fileEncoding="utf-8" requestEncoding="utf-8" responseEncoding="utf-8" />
</system.web>
</configuration>
And the application connection string is as follows:Dim usersql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedname")
Dim passsql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedkey")
connectionString = "data source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;initial catalog=databasename;"
connectionString &= ";user id=" & usersql
connectionString &= ";password=" & passsql
I am obviously missing something. Not sure what or how to pass the permissions on properly.Can some kind soul please help me with this problemThank YouJeff

Connection Problem From Access Front End Application To SQL Desktop Engine Backend

Jul 23, 2005

Hi there,I sincerely hope that someone out there can help. I have twoinstances of the SQL 2000 Desktop Engine running. One is on my localmachine for development and the other is on another machine on ournetwork which is the production environment. I have built an Access2003 front end application which connects to this database. Thisworks fine locally, as you would expect. I successfully installed thedatabase on the production machine and am able to connect to it viaAccess 2003 (using the Data Link Properties window) and from thirdparty database manager software (similar to Enterprise Manager). I amnot able to to connect to the database via my application.I am using the "sa" account with a strong password. This is myconnection string:strConnection = "Provider=sqloledb;DataSource=server02;UserId=sa;Password=strong;Initial Catalog=Test"The error I'm getting is:"Connection cannot be used to perform this operation. It is eitherclosed or invalid in this context."The connection string is the only thing that changes in my code when Iswitch from my local to my production database. Is there some reasonthat I can't use the "sa" account in this fashion that I'm not awareof? I'd rather not use integrated security for simplicity's sake asthis is a small, internal application. Also, I would have thoughtthat if that was the issue, I couldn't use "sa" at all, even locally.I'm going to post to the Access group as well but thought someone heremight have some advice to offer as well.Thanks,Barb

Unable To Remote Access

Nov 22, 2006

Hi all,
I encounter a problem of unable to access Remote Server after i placed my web application into the web server.
 An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)
So I googled and tried lot of different ways of connecting.By piped name, IP, trying instance which that server don't even have one :X.I also tried typing in cmd > telnet localhost 1433It appeared that the telnet fail, i tried it on other machine, it works. So is it cause by denied of access through that port?I checked at the sql client network, it show 1433, i check the server too, it show 1433.I also checked if there's any firewall, it appear there is no firewall at all.The sql server i trying to connect is SQL 2000, it run by Windows Server 2003
Any advise or more information you needed to help me solve this problem?Thanks

Remote SQL Server Access

May 11, 2004

I'm using SQL Server to store session state. The Sql Server is on the local network but not on the web server. I use impersonation and use account credentials for the ASPNET worker process:

<identity impersonate="true" userName="domainuser" password="pass"/>

I'm able to access all resources and execute all pages without any problem.

When an object is added to session state I recieve the following error:

"Cannot open database requested in login 'ASPState'. Login fails. Login failed for user 'domainusername. "

Here is my web.config entry for using sql server (with modified connection string of course):

<sessionState mode="SQLServer" cookieless="false" timeout="30" stateConnectionString="Data Source=xxx.xxx.x.xx,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ASPState;Integrated Security=SSPI" />

I've checked and given the user i'm impersonating the ability to do everything. I've granted access on all necessary files, added them to the DB and made the user a db_owner of the ASPState table. I can log in to a machine as the user, then access sql server using the windows authentication. I granted 'act as part of the operating system', 'access this computer from a network', 'log on as a service', 'log on as a batch job' on both the remote computer hosting sql server and the web server.

The strange thing is i installed the asp session state tables on my development machine, using the same configuration file to run everything, and was able to add an object to session state without any problem. But when i specify the remote server, i'm denied.

Anybody have an idea?
