Just a silly wonder I had a few days ago:
I have a table named 'CustomerOrders' and I ponder between the posibilities of PrimaryKey(s) i can set :
1. CustomerId + OrderID - a two columns key providing exactly what i need (representing the actual relation).
2. CustOrderId - one column key with identity insert (so i could directly delete/update the record).
Which one should I choose and why? Would i gain anything by choosing one over the other?

Sep 5, 2015I am really puzzled by an apparent difference between table index key column order and its statistics order. I was under understanding that index statistics mirror index definition. However, in my db 2470 index ordinal definitions match statistics definition but 66 do not. I also can reproduce such discrepancy in 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014.
As per definition,

I am creating triggers on th efly from stored procedure.I have table 1in db1 and table2 in db2 and i want to capture inserts ,updates and deletes in table 1 to table 2 for which triggers are getting created from SP in SQL 2000.
If i create instead of triggers then its working fine but the row will not be inserted in the main table and i need rows to be inserted in the main table.The tables is having ntext columns.Any work around for this?

I built several procs which make use of table-valued-parameters, and they work pretty nicely, until I need them to accept additional columns. Then I have to drop all the procs that use them, alter the types, and rebuild all the procedures, which is a huge pain in the rear.
Is there any good way (built in, or custom) to alter the def of a table type that's used as a parameter to multiple stored procedures?

UNION For Columns Of CLOB Data Type Does Not Work
May 10, 2007I have two tables Encounter & Encounter_History. They have same columns. One column is of type CLOB. My requirement is to retrieve all the distinct records from both the tables with order by a date column. But problem is, UNION does not work in case of CLOB data type.
I know it will work if I use UNION ALL, but it returns duplicate records.
Please give me suggestion, how to solve this problem.
For example: The following query does not work since column1 is a CLOB data type

Oct 30, 2014I have a table (we will cal DateTable) with several (20) columns, each being a date type. Another table's (Project) PK is referenced in the DateTable.
I am trying to write a query that will pull all dates for a specific project from the DateTable if they meet certain criteria(i.e. if the date is <= 7 days from now.
I started with a normal select statement selecting each column with a join to the project and then a where clause using
(DateTable.ColumnName BETWEEN GETDATE() AND DATEADD(day, 7, GETDATE()) OR (DateTable.ColumnName BETWEEN GETDATE() AND DATEADD(day, 7, GETDATE())) ...
The rest of the columns(all with OR between them).
The problem with this is that because I am using OR once one of the dates meets the criteria it selects all the dates that are associated with the project. I ONLY want the dates that meet the criteria and don't care about the rest.
Obviously because I have all the columns in the select statement... So I need something like
Select ALL Columns

XML Source Produces DT_UI8 Key Columns - Which SQL Server Data Type To Store?
Aug 12, 2007I'm using the XML Source to process a hierarchical set of XML. As such, the XML Source creates keys to maintain the hierarchy. This is very convenient, and keeps me from having to invent my own keys.
The problem is that the datatype of these keys defaults to DT_UI8. Which SQL Server 2005 datatype should I use to store these values in my staging tables? BIGINT corresponds to DT_I8, which can't accept DT_UI8 values.
Identity Columns Fails To Increment After 2147483585 - Numeric Data Type
Nov 20, 2007I had a strange problem today with one of the identity fields in a frequently used table. It appears that the Identity column for a table had stopped incrementing after it reached 2147483585. Since I had inherited this table, I am not sure if the identity column type has been modified from int to numeric, but the current type is Numeric (9) which is 19 precision and 0 scale value.
When resetting the seed to 1, it started working. I tried creating a temp table with numeric value and it increments well beyond billions with no problems.
Has anyone encountered this? Any best practices around defining Identity data type (ie. use int or bigint and avoide Numeric)?

I am working on a column chart type (stacked column sub-type) report.
Our customer requires us that the space(padding) between the columns should be a constant(including the space between the Y-axis and the first column). I know how to set the width of the columns, but I really don't know how to set the width of the space between them. The columns just varies the space between them automatically according to the number of the columns (the number of the columns is not certain).

RS2k Issue: PDF Exporting Report With Hidden Columns, Stretches Visible Columns And Misplaces Columns On Spanned Page

I am running into an issue with RS2k PDF export.
Case: Exporting Report to PDF/Printing/TIFF
Report: Contains 1 table with 19 Columns. 1 column is static, the other 18 are visible at the users descretion. Report when printed/exported to pdf spans 2 pages naturally, 16 on the first page, 3 on the second, and the column widths have been adjusted to provide a perfect page span .
User A elects to hide two of the columns, and show the rest. The report complies and the viewable version is perfect, the excel export is perfect.. the PDF export on the first page causes every fith column, starting with the last column that was hidden to be expanded to take up additional width. On the spanned page, it renders the first column on that page correctly, then there is a white space gap equal to the width of the hidden columns and then the rest of the cells show with the last column expanded to take up the same width that the original 2 columns were going to take up, plus its width.
We have tried several different settings to see if it helps this issue or makes it worse. So far cangrow/canshrink/keep together have made no impact. It is not possible to increase the page size due to limited page size selection availablility for the client. There are far too many combinations of what the user can elect to show or hide to put together different tables to show and hide on the same report to remove this effect.
Any help or suggestion on this issue would be appreciated

Float Type Steals My Decimal Points And Money Type Kills My Query

A while since I have posted a question, and this one is probably real easy.
I am trying to store numeric values from a php form in MSSQL 2000 database. However, the columns are set to float and if the value is 1.00, when entered into the table it is saved as 1
If I change the column type to money, the query fails, with an error message of conversion of datatype varchar to datatype money statement terminated.
anybody know what I need to do? do I need to do something in my query to specify that this is NOT varchar data?

Dec 14, 2007I like to define my procedure parameter type to match a referenced table colum type,
similar to PL/SQL "table.column%type" notation.
That way, when the table column is changes, I would not have to change my stored proc.
Any suggestion?

The table in SQL has column Availability Decimal (8,8)
Code in c# using sqlbulkcopy trying to insert values like 0.0000, 0.9999, 29.999 into the field Availability
we tried the datatype float , but it is converting values to scientific expressions(eg: 8E-05) and the values displayed in reports are scientifc expressions which is not expected
we need to store values as is

Dec 7, 2011Implement time interval type in the form of a user defined type in SS2k8r2? Specifically an interval type described in the book Temporal Data and the Relational Model by C. J. Date at all. As an example, an interval is below:
1/4/2006:1/10/2006
which would mean the time period from 1/4 to 1/10.
